Lucy On Stage ~ Act 3

Lucille Ball’s dream was to appear on Broadway. That dream become a reality in 1960, but ended prematurely. if Lucy couldn’t be on Broadway, Broadway would come to Hollywood – on Lucy’s new TV show “Here’s Lucy.”

“A MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA”

“Lucy and Carol Burnett” (1969) ~ Lucy convinces Carol Burnett to star in a benefit to raise money to build a gymanasium at Kim and Craig’s high school. The show is divided into three parts:

PART I - WE GOT NO GYM (Introduction)

“Yes! We Have No Gymnasium” (aka “Yes! We Have No Bananas”) was written by Frank Silver and Irving Cohn from the 1922 Broadway revue Make It Snappy.

Carol does a brief time step to the melody of “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” a song written by Irving Berlin for the musical Annie Get Your Gun.

PART II - WE GOT THE MONEY (a visual lesson in geography)

NEW YORK, NY ~ “The Lullaby of Broadway” was written by Harry Warren and Al Dubin. It was introduced musical film Gold Diggers of 1935 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The song is now part of the Broadway musical 42nd Street.

ST. LOUIS, MO ~ “You Came a Long Way From St. Louis” by John Benson Brooks and Bob Russell. 

SHEBOYGAN, WI - “Mention My Name in Sheboygan” was written by Bob Hilliard, Dick Sanford and Sammy Mysels in 1947. The second verse mentions NEW ORLEANS and the third TEXAS. 

PART III - WE GOT OUR GYM (a celebration of physical education)

A marching band plays “Buckle Down, Winsocki” from the 1943 film Best Foot Forward in which Lucille Ball played herself. 

Craig sings “You Gotta be a Football Hero (To Get Along with the Beautiful Girls)” by Al Sherman, Buddy Fields and Al Lewis in 1933.

Kim sings “All American Girl” written by Al Lewis in 1932.  

A display of gymnastics in which Harry (Gale Gordon) does a cartwheel. 

The finale is “Fit as a Fiddle” written by Arthur Freed, Al Hoffman, and Al Goodhart in 1932. In 1952 it achieved fame after being featured in the classic film Singin’ in the Rain.

“THE GENERATION GAP THROUGH THE AGES”

“Lucy and the Generation Gap” (1969) ~ Kim and Craig are in charge of producing the school play. At a loss for ideas, they recruit Lucy and Harry to be in a musical about the generation gap. The show is divided into three parts:

The Roman Era

Lucy and Harry play parents Calpurnia and Caesar. Kim is their daughter Kimea and Craig is their son Craigius. They sing “Kids Are Bugged About Parents” to the tune of “I’m Just Wild About Harry,” a song written in 1921 by Eubie Blake for the Broadway show Shuffle Along.

In The Gay Nineties 

Harry plays Ambrose, the father. Lucy and the kids don’t get different names in this segment. The foursome sing “We’ll Just Cut the Old House in Two” which is sung to the tune of “Bicycle Built for Two” aka “Daisy Bell” written in 1892 by Harry Dacre.

In The Space Age

Kim wants to go to Jupiter with Spencer. When Lucy refuses because it is an overnight trip, Lucie reasons that Helen’s mother lets her go. Harry points out that Helen’s mother is a robot – and always “well-oiled.” They sing “Kids” a song written by Lee Adams and Charles Strouse for the 1960 Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie, filmed in 1963. 

“IT’S ALWAYS DO-WACKA-DO AT BULLWINKLE U!” 

“Lucy the Co-Ed” (1970) ~ Harry's old flame Gloria (Marilyn Maxwell) is in town to help produce a musical for their college alumni. They resurrect a show Harry wrote in 1928 and cast Lucy, Kim, and Craig in supporting roles.

The musical comedy is set at Bullwinkle University. The cast includes Lucy as Ginger the head cheerleader, Harry as Crazy Hips the football star, Kim (Lucie Arnaz) as Honey, Craig (Desi Arnaz Jr.) as Dead End, Gloria (Marilyn Maxwell) as the Nurse, and Robert Alda as the Dean. 

As the curtain goes up, the orchestra plays “You Gotta be a Football Hero (To Get Along with the Beautiful Girls)” written by Al Sherman, Buddy Fields and Al Lewis in 1933.

As Ginger (Lucy) enters, the boys sing “Ain't She Sweet” written in 1927 by Milton Ager and Jack Yellin.

When Crazy Hips (Harry) enters in his football uniform the girls sing “Baby Face” written in 1926 by Harry Akst and Benny Davis.  

The students all sing “Buckle Down Bullwinkle” to the tune of “Buckle Down Winsockie” a song written for the film Best Foot Forward (1943) in which Lucille Ball did a cameo as herself.

Ginger, Honey, Dead End, Crazy Hips, and the Dean (Robert Alda) sing “Collegiate” written in 1925 by Nat Bonx and Moe Jaffe.

The musical ends with “Varsity Drag,” a song written by Lew Brown and B.G. DeSylva for Good News, which was seen on Broadway in 1927 and on screen in 1947 when it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song.

“THE HOLLYWOOD UNEMPLOYMENT FOLLIES or HOW TO STARVE IN SHOW BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING”

“Lucy and Carol Burnett Salute Hollywood” (1971) ~ Harry has fired Lucy again, so she visits the unemployment office where she reunites with secretary turned actress Carol Krausmeyer (Carol Burnett) and meets other out of work show biz folk.  They decide to put on a show in order to make some dough!  

The ensemble sings “Hooray for Hollywood” a song by Johnny Mercer and Richard A. Whiting that was first sung in the 1937 movie Hollywood Hotel. 

After a backstage tour of Hollywood memorobilia, Lucy and Carol sing “Chicago (That Toddlin’ Town”) a song written by Fred Fisher and published in 1922.

After a quick costume change, they sing “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” which was composer Irving Berlin’s first hit in 1911.

Kim introduces (through song) Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson doing a tap routine which she joins in.

Four Canadian Mounties sing “Stout-hearted Men,” a song by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II written for the operetta New Moon in 1927, with film versions in 1930 and 1940. Richard Deacon (also dressed as a Mountie) and Carol Burnett sing “Indian Love Call” by Rudolf Friml, Herbert Stothart, Otto Harbach, and Oscar Hammerstein II written for the 1924 operetta Rose-Marie.

Dressed as Marlene Dietrich, Lucy sings “Falling in Love Again (Never Wanted To)” from the 1930 German film The Blue Angel. Harry plays a World War I German soldier.

The Highhatters introduce Carol as Miss Ruby Keeler and they sing “Shuffle Off To Buffalo” by Al Dubin and Hugh Warren, originally written for the 1933 film 42nd Street. 

As the finale, the entire ensemble is dressed in rain slickers and performs “Singin’ in the Rain” written by Arthur Freed and Nacio Herb Brown in 1931. It was most famously featured in the film Singin’ in the Rain in 1952. Jack Benny makes a cameo appearance selling umbrellas! 

“THE FAREWELL SHOW” 

“Lucy Goes Hawaiian: Part 2″ (1971) ~ Lucy and Harry have to put a ‘Farewell Show’ for the final night of their cruise. Viv, Kim and Craig are along to help her to produce a Hawaiian extravaganza.

Dressed as a canary, Vivian sings "Yellow Bird” (aka “Choucoune”) a 19th-century Haitian song composed by Michel Mauleart Monton with lyrics from a poem by Oswald Durand. It was rewritten with English lyrics in the 20th century as “Yellow Bird.”

Kim and Lucy sing “Ukulele Talk” by Ervin Drake, written in the 1920s. 

Craig does an impression of Don Ho (inset), singing “Tiny Bubbles” by Martin Denny and Leon Pober. It was released in 1966 by Ho and became his signature song.

Lucy and Viv sing the 1957 novelty song “Mama’s Mumu” by Gene Burdette. Harry makes a special appearances as 'Mama’.

The Captain (Robert Alda) sings “Just Keep Your Eyes on the Hands” while Kim dances a seductive hula. The song was written by Tony Todaro and Liko Johnston and was interpolated into the 1956 film The Revolt of Mamie Stover.

The Carters perform “A Hawaiian War Chant,” written by Johnny Noble, a composer who was a native Hawaiian.

“Lucy and Candid Camera” (1972) ~Thinking they are pulling off a Candid Camera stunt, Lucy, Harry and Kim rob the City Bank. The crime is done while performing a Broadway Musical song and dance medley especially written for this episode:

“Stealin' the Jack” aka “Ballin' the Jack” was written in 1913 by Jim Burris and Chris Smith.

“Hello, Dollar!” aka “Hello, Dolly!” is the title song of the 1964 musical of the same name written by Jerry Herman.

“Whatever Lucy Wants” aka “Whatever Lola Wants” is by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross from the 1954 musical Damn Yankees.

“We Got the Money” aka “We're in the Money or The Gold Diggers Song” was written by Al Dubin and Harry Warren for the film The Gold Diggers of 1933. It is now part of the stage musical 42nd Street.

“The Impossible Dream or The Quest” was written by Joe Darien and Mitch Leigh for the 1964 musical Man of La Mancha.

“Please Don't Talk About Us When We Go” aka “Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone” was written by Sidney Clare and Sam H. Stept in 1930.  

“Hey Look Me Over” written in 1960 by Cy Coleman for the Broadway musical Wildcat and introduced by Lucille Ball. 

“NO ONE HAD AN INHIBITION ABOUT DISOBEYING PROHIBITION” 

“My Fair Buzzi” (1972) ~ Kim’s shy and awkward friend Annie Whipple (Ruth Buzzi) comes out of her shell in order to audition for a 1920s revue. The episode title and story of transformation were inspired by the 1956 Broadway musical and 1964 film My Fair Lady, which, in turn, was inspired by George Bernard Shaw’s 1912 play Pygmalion. Both plays are mentioned in the dialogue of the episode.

In a rehearsal hall sequence, Kim performs “El Cubanchero,” one of Desi Arnaz’s biggest hits. It was written in 1947 by Rafael Hernández. When the director tells her that they are only working on the “Speakeasy” sketch, she offers a tap routine while singing “Anchor’s Aweigh,” the march of the United States Navy composed in 1906 by Charles A. Zimmermann.

Kim and Annie are members of the Community Drama Club. Lucy plays Dallas Noonan, a reference to real-life Texas Guinan, one of the first female emcees and speak easy owners. Annie plays Penelope, Harry plays gangster Big Jake, and Kim plays dancer Buttercup. 

Buttercup and two flappers appear as ‘The Misstep Sisters’ and tap and sing to “Nagasaki,” a song written in 1928 by Harren Warren and Mort Dixon.

For the curtain call, the band plays “Tiger Rag,” a song that dates back to 1917.  

“THE GIRL FRIDAY FOLLIES”

“Lucy Gives Eddie Albert the Old Song and Dance” (1973) ~ When producing a charity show, Lucy asks Eddie Albert to star in it. At the same time, a woman meeting Lucy’s description has been stalking Albert. 

The show a show (which raises money to send underprivileged kids to camp) opens with Mary Jane and Vanda taking their final bows as the team of ‘Crime and Punishment’. Harry plays the Emcee. 

For the finale, Lucy and Eddie Albert perform “Makin’ Whoopee” written by Gus Kahn and Walter Donaldson. The song was first popularized by Eddie Cantor in the 1928 musical Whoopee!

We got a ticket parked in front of our house last week because we couldn't get into our driveway after the grader left a big snow bank at the end of it.  Amazing Spider-Man: Daily Bugle #2 - Mat Johnson (writer) Mack Chater (art pages 1-12) Francesco Mobili (art pages 13-20) Dono Sanchez-Almara, Protobunker & Peter Pantazis (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I can't read the rest of this 5-issue mini. The art really bothered me this issue. It was hard to tell what was going on the first few pages and then seeing Peter Parker in civvies looking almost exactly like the bad guy confused me further. There are interesting mysteries about Spidey's webbing and a Wilson Fisk involvement with an explosion, but this story probably won't matter in the grand scheme of things, so I don't think I'll miss anything if I bail out here.

 Punisher Soviet #4 - Garth Ennis (writer) Jacen Burrows (pencils) Guillermo Ortego (inks) Nolan Woodard (colours) Rob Steen (letters). Frank and Valery go after Konstantin by kidnapping his trophy wife. She's amenable to divorce by Punisher. Thank Garth for improving my mood.

 Basketful of Heads #5 - Joe Hill (writer) Leomacs (art) Riccardo La Bella (additional pencils) Dave Stewart (colours) Deron Bennett (letters). Everything leading up to this issue has been circumstantial. Now the villain tells the complete story. I'm rooting for June to survive this mess.

 Year of the Villain: Hell Arisen #3 - James Tynion IV (writer) Steve Epting & Javier Fernandez (art) Nick Filardi (colours) Travis Lanham (letters). Heh, it's the Joker who helps Lex beat the Batman Who Laughs. It looks like next issue's pulse pounding conclusion will be Lex and his super villains versus the Batman Who Laughs and his infected super heroes. It's been a while since the Main Man has been in a comic that I've read.

 Avengers #31 - Jason Aaron (writer) Gerardo Zaffino, Geraldo Borges, Szymon Kudranski, Oscar Bazaldua, Robert Gill & Mattia De Iulis (art) Rachelle Rosenberg & Mattia De Iulis (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). I haven't seen Tony Stark in a while so I assumed he was dead. Nope. He was zapped a million years into the past by the master manipulator Mephisto. The devil tries to get Tony's soul. This is a wonderful full issue of Iron Man and if Jason wrote an Iron Man book, I'd read it.

 Amethyst #1 - Amy Reeder (story & art) Gabriela Downie (letters). I remember reading the original Amethyst book when it hit the racks in 1983 with the Ernie Colon art. It was fun and weird with a plucky heroine. This new Wonder Comics book has the appeal of having art by Amy Reeder who wowed me with her work on Madame Xanadu and Rocket Girl. Here she is writing as well and the art and story is tight and concise. This is a nice substitute for the dearly departed Naomi book.

 Avengers of the Wastelands #2 - Ed Brisson (writer) Jonas Scharf (art) Neeraj Menon (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). It's the origin of Captain America of the Wastelands. His name is Grant. I think this is a great way to change tried and true Marvel characters to make them fresh and new. Having them fight an evil Doctor Doom is nice and simple. Four Avengers may become five but they have to contend with a super villain first.

 Suicide Squad #3 - Tom Taylor (writer) Bruno Redondo (art) Adriano Lucas (colours) Wes Abbott (letters). The new Squad's first mission under Lok's leadership does not go according to plan. Neither are these super villains what they seem. This is why I read Tom Taylor books. Forget about any new Crises and DCeased and pick up this most excellent comic book for some straight up action and skulduggery.

 Kill Lock #3 - Livio Ramondelli (story & art) Tom B. Long (letters). I get why the calligraphy font is used in the Wraith's word balloons but man, is it hard to read. This issue explains why The Kid is innocent and shouldn't be branded. The four droids find the one who can lead them to the Kill Lock's off switch but she betrays them. This universe of sentient robots is pretty cool.

 Jessica Jones: Blind Spot #4 - Kelly Thompson (writer) Mattia De Iulis (art) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Each issue has started off with Jessica held captive by the bad guy. The end of this issue reveals who that is and how she was killed and resurrected. I am looking forward to the conclusion to see how she defeats the villain.

 Batman Superman #7 - Joshua Williamson (writer) Nick Derington (art) Dave McCaig (colours) John J. Hill (letters). A new story starts here. Part 1 of "The Kandor Compromise" pits the World's Finest duo against Ra's Al Ghul and General Zod. One of the bad guys is working with the good guys. I got bored of the fight between Superman and Rogol Zaar so what happened to the city of Kandor was a surprise to me. I'm interested to see the final fate of the shrunken city.

 Giant-Size X-Men: Jean Grey and Emma Frost #1 - Jonathan Hickman (writer) Russell Dauterman (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). This mostly wordless $4.99 US one-shot will be a quick read but I read it twice just to soak in the beautiful art. The story starts with the discovery Storm's body and ends with a problem after Ororo is resurrected. This leads into a story where Jean, Emma, Logan and Scott will have to save Storm again.

 Leviathan Dawn #1- Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Alex Maleev (art) Josh Reed (letters). Leviathan succeeded in shutting down every spy agency and the leader has been revealed to be an ex-spy named Mark Shaw. The good guys are still trying to fight back but they're going to need help. Time for Kingsley Jacobs to start up Check Mate again. I like the players he's gathered. I'm looking forward to watching this game unfold.

 Finger Guns #1 - Justin Richards (writer) Val Halvorson (art) Rebecca Nalty (colours) Taylor Esposito (letters). And now for something completely different. This new urban fantasy introduces two teenagers with a weird power. Wes discovers that when he shoots people with his left hand he can make them angry. Sadie can calm people down when she uses her right finger gun. They meet by accident at the mall and try to get a handle on their newfound powers. It's a cool concept and I wonder where these kids are going to end up.

 Fantastic Four: Grimm Noir #1 - Gerry Duggan (writer) Ron Garney (art) Matt Milla (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). This one's all about Ben's bad dreams. I thought the bad guy was Nightmare but it's another one of those mystical villains that generally mess with Doctor Strange. I expected some sort of Mickey Spillane type story but there's no murder, just a pretty dame needing rescue. It's a nice character study of the ever lovin' blue-eyed Thing.

 Detective Comics #1020 - Peter J. Tomasi (writer) Brad Walker (pencils) Andrew Hennessy (inks) Brad Anderson (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Two-Face is back and he's more bipolar than ever. This is what I like to see, an old villain presented in a slightly new way. We still have the scarred coin dictating how Harvey acts but there's a new twist with a cult of fanatics and the Church of the Two Strikes. I love how the first page hints at the return of the Court of Owls too.

 Falcon & Winter Soldier #1 - Derek Landy (writer) Federico Vicentini (art) Matt Milla (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). This 5-issue team-up starts off with a heavily armed and armoured hit squad attacking Bucky Barnes in his home. The Winter Soldier emerges unscathed and hops his motorcycle to find out who sent the killers. Meanwhile Sam Wilson is searching for a missing vet. The two meet at a government agency office where all the staff are dead. Wanting to know who's doing all the killing has got me interested in reading the rest but when a preppy killer shows up and kicks both of the heroes asses I decided to put this mini on my "must read" list. The kid's name is the Natural. Picture a blonde Damian Wayne in a pair of Chuck Taylors.

 The Amazing Spider-Man #40 - Nick Spencer (writer) Iban Coello & Ze Carlos (art) Brian Reber & Peter Pantazis (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). The fight between Spider-Man and Chance had to do with a bet that Chance could get one of Spidey's web shooters. What bothered me was how easily that was done and Spider-Man's lack of urgency to get it back. There's a couple of foreshadowing scenes that will keep me reading however. One involves the Clairvoyant device and the other is who Norah Winters is working with.

 X-Men #7 - Jonathan Hickman (writer) Leinil Francis Yu (art) Sunny Gho (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). This issue is dedicated to a new Mutant Ritual called the Crucible. It's a lot shorter than calling it the Arena of Death and Rebirth. It shows how mutants who have lost their powers can get them back. But first we have to endure a deep philosophical discussion between Cyclops and Nightcrawler. It's a real snoozer if you're an action fan.

 Action Comics #1020 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) John Romita Jr. (pencils) Klaus Janson (inks) Brad Anderson (colours) Dave Sharpe (letters). I wish they would stop with the deceiving covers. It looks like Superman is trying to come between Lex Luthor and Leviathan but what actually happens inside is Superman fighting Lex and the Legion of Doom. If it weren't for Young Justice helping out I would have found this issue boring.

 X-Men/Fantastic Four #2 - Chip Zdarsky (writer) Terry Dodson (pencils) Rachel Dodson, Karl Story & Ransom Getty (inks) Laura Martin (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). There's a lot of heroes accusing heroes of shenanigans concerning the disappearance of Franklin and Valeria. They are actually guests of Doctor Doom. Victor wants to reverse what Reed did to his son and I want to know why. With the X-Men converging on Doom Island, good old Doc Doom is prepared for an attack.

 X-Force #8 - Benjamin Percy (writer) Bazaldua (art) Guru-eFX (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). Why did Oscar Bazaldua stop using his first name in the credits? Domino and Colossus attack the flesh factory making assassins using Neena's DNA. The organisation funding the flesh factory has a mysterious benefactor and I'm hanging around to find out who that is. I wish they would change either Sage or Jubilee's costume. I keep getting them confused.

With a week to go until the Primetime Emmy Awards, this year’s celebrations of achievements on television kicked off on Saturday, with the 71st Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

The ceremony, which took place at The Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, honored the artistic and technical accomplishments across a variety of television genres this year.

Many celebrities were in attendance including Kim Kardashian West, Rachel Bloom and Queer Eye‘s Karamo Brown, Bobby Berk, Jonathan Van Ness, Tan France and Antoni Porowski.

When the urgent notification popped up in his eye-mail, the very old man swatted it away. How was he still getting these damn things? He unsubscribed twenty times at least from this mailing list he never even signed up for. Tried to block them. What part of no means no didn’t these parasites understand? Last week he was so fed up with the spamming, he called the U.S. Department of Reparations toll-free number to strongly suggest they go straight to hell, but nobody answered.

He slapped at the air again, deleting the message mid-scroll. Then groaned, rolling over in bed. The nubs where his legs used to be itched. The sign of a storm coming. Then: Boom! Boom! Boom! On the door of his senior living pod. He pulled the cover over his head, but knew he couldn’t hide. “Police!” came the voice from the other side. “Open up, Mr. Ellison!”

Fifteen minutes later, the security guard dragged Ellison into a crowded microsurgery clinic.

“Get your hands off me!” Ellison hollered, fighting but failing to break free. “I’m exempt!”

The guard took Ellison to reception. “Got another 406 for ya.”

“Wunderbar!” said the receptionist. She aimed an ID scanner, clicked, and a blue light flashed. The data loaded onto her computer. “Waldo Ellison. Been playing a little hooky, have we?”

“No, no, seriously, I—I’m handicapped, look—” Ellison showed off his robotic prosthetics. “I’m supposed to get a pass.”

The guard bent down like talking to a toddler. “Can you say man-da-tory?”

“Please,” Ellison pleaded. “I’m not supposed to be here.”

“Rightio, you’re supposed to be over there.” The receptionist pointed to the long line of people waiting to go through pre-op body scanners. Then she pressed an intercom and muttered, “Need a fix on a 406,” as the guard escorted Ellison away.

“Hold up, I can’t do this. I don’t do hospital beds, I break out real bad—”

“If you try to break out of here, it won’t be good. Trust me.”

The guard patted Ellison’s shoulder and left him in the back of the line. The line was a snarl-up, going nowhere, like a scene from the DMV back in the day, before autonomous cars. A shame that cars learned to be autonomous before people. Look at them. More like drones in skin wrapping paper. With zero perspective beyond their eye-mail. Ellison whacked the notification away with a grunt.

Then: a voice behind him. “What’s the matter, legacy?”

[Legacy [leg-uh-see] noun, offensive: An old or obsolete person with machine parts]

Ellison dismissed the pop-up definition, turned around. “Whatchu call me?!”

Standing in line behind him was a boy, maybe fifteen, wearing an LED shirt that kept flashing Now You See Me then Now You Don’t.

“No trigger, no trigger,” he said with his hands up. “Just launching dialogue with you. Looking like we’ll be frozen here a minute.”

Ellison almost asked the boy where his parents were, but then remembered he didn’t give a shred of damn. He turned back around, hoping a non-response would shut him up.

But the boy asked: “Why you all sad-faced?”

Ellison turned around. “Lookie here, you—”

“Call me Disher.”

“I’m tired and it’s about to rain and I’m just tryna get out of here. And I got a hunch that if you zip those lips of yours, that’ll happen a helluva lot faster, you got me?”

Ellison turned back around.

“I think I got you,” Disher said.

Ellison turned around. “No, no, you clearly don’t, see, ‘cause that was a rhetorical question. That means you’re not supposed to answer.”

“I know what rhetorical means.”

“Then why are you still talking to me?”

Disher frowned. “Is that rhetorical?”

Ellison shook his head, turned back around.

“Why the downvotes, legs? I mean, judging by your body-mods, that last-gen suit and your buggy social skills, I’m getting a strong centenarian signal. I fig, what, a buck oh-five? Buck ten? Point being, this should be an achievement day for you.”

Ellison scoffed. “Achievement day.”

“No more color lines. Equality all around. That’s God particle!”

Ellison glared at Disher. Was he born remedial? Or was that LED shirt offing brain cells?

“It’s Trojan horse-shit,” Ellison said.

“Edit: Okay, maybe not God particle, but at least it’s a step in—”

“—Trojan horse-shit.”

“Whatchu infected with? Verify, I’m not as ancient as you. Still I’ve d-loaded enough history to know it was all glitched up back in your era. But now, thanks to this program, I can be somebody.”

Ellison palmed his face. “A monochrome somebody.”

“Legs, you can’t act like complexion don’t matter. You know how long it took me to find a job? How many opps declined me because my skin tone? How about all the undocs looking for sanctuary?” Disher motioned to the people in line. “Like or dislike, this new law levels the playing—”

“Spare me the sound bites, alright? It’s the same field, different game.” Then, without thinking, Ellison shouted: “You fools really think not seeing color will make racism disappear?!”

“Who’s a fool?” came a voice from the crowd.

Ellison felt all eyes on him. But he got an idea: If he could get enough of these drones riled up, the guard would have to step in, and Ellison could step right the hell out.

“Who’s a fool?” he asked. “Everybody in this line, that’s who.”

“Who this legacy think he trolling?” somebody asked, rhetorically.

“I speak the truth!” he said. “You’re all getting herded up like cattle. In the name of equality. Am I the only one seeing this?”

“Amigo, you’re going to be seeing a whole lot less if you keep at it,” somebody said.

Ellison kept at it. “Discrimination never dies. If not the color of your skin, it’ll be your accent.”

Pointing to various people around him. “Or your eyes. Or your nose. Your height. Or your weight.”

Ellison pointed to Disher. “That hair.” To himself. “These legs.” A man in a color-changing hijab.

“That Christmas ornament on your head.”

His partner pushed Ellison’s hand away. “You crossed the line.”

“See, exactly, that’s my point! There will always be a line.”

The security guard waved a finger at Ellison. A warning to stop.

Ellison didn’t stop. “Do any of you know what it feels like to get hit in the face by a high-pressure fire hose? I’m talking enough water pressure to tear bark off a tree or brick off a wall. Of course you don’t, but I do. See, I was out there, Kelly Ingram Park, singing ‘Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around’ while getting sprayed to the ground by pigs.”

The security guard didn’t budge.

“Bet you never even heard that song, huh? Listen, don’t be mad at me, I’m only speaking truth! I grew up in the segregated South. Marches, boycotts, sit-ins. Out there fighting for my rights. My life. But see, that’s what’s wrong with you kids today. You don’t know nothing about sacrifice!”

The security guard wasn’t intervening.

“And now look at you, staring all blank, scrolling through retinal feeds, for what? e-race fashion dos and don’ts? Do wear bright colors and you’ll be fab! Don’t wear gray or you’ll look drab! Ha! You’re standing in line for a mandatory surgery to be colorblind and that’s supposed to be quote-unquote great for America? I didn’t vote for this. Did you vote for this?”

Why wasn’t the security guard intervening?!

“But wasn’t this the end game?” Disher said. “A future where we don’t see color? That means all the protests paid off, right? Isn’t this the world Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed of?”

The question wasn’t exactly rhetorical. But Ellison didn’t answer fast enough, and the tension evaporated with murmurs of “That’s true.”/“Good point.”/“Preach!”

Ellison hollered: “I know where I stand!”

Somebody hollered back: “Yeah, in line just like the rest of us!”

The crack drew laughs. Moment gone, just like that. Everybody went back to their business. Scrolling through retinal feeds. The security guard raised his fist in the air like “power to the people.”

Ellison, rage boiling over, stepped out of line. Power walking. Straight for the guard.

[Starting tomorrow, racism in America will be history!]

Ellison punched the notification.

The guard held his ground, grabbed his nightstick.

Ellison closing in.

Tunnel vision.

[Starting tomorrow, racism in America will be history! Today marks the deadline…]

Ellison batted the air. He’d show them a deadline.

The guard stepped forward, winding up.

“Don’t take another step!” he said.

Ellison didn’t stop. But a default safety feature made his legs slow down.

The guard lit up, convinced of his godlike power.

Ellison pushed himself forward, but Disher’s hand grabbed his arm, holding him back.

“No ban, mods,” Disher told the guard. “I’ll take care of him.”

“Get off of me!” Ellison said.

But Disher used the energy to pivot and escort Ellison to the vacant restroom.

Inside: there was a window up in the wall, getting pummeled by pellets of rain. Disher locked the door and went to a urinal. Ellison leaned over the sink, adrenaline coming back to Earth.

“What were you thinking?” he said, staring at his reflection.

“You’re welcome,” Disher said. “And don’t start spamming me about colored-only restrooms.” Ellison splashed his face with water. “I don’t know nothing about colored-only restrooms.”

“Riiight.”

“That’s the truth. I never stepped foot in one in my life.”

“But you said—”

“I never marched. Never boycotted. The only sit-in I ever did was at home, alone on my couch, when I didn’t feel like being bothered with people. Which was all the damn time.”

Disher washed his hands, keeping his mouth shut.

“Back then I felt like, if I could work hard, make something of myself, anybody could. And everybody blaming racism was just using that as an excuse. I really thought that.”

“Where’s the error?” Disher said. “Race is a social construct. If you don’t believe in ghosts, they can’t attack you.”

“I used to say, ‘I don’t believe in race.’ But see, to say that, I was denying the struggle of the oppressed. Hell, my own struggle! I was in denial of myself.” Ellison turned to Disher. “Look, I know you think this Indivisible Nation Act is the end-all, be-all, but I’m here to tell you, it’s not even close. Racism is grafted into the skin of America. You can’t remove it without spilling a whole lot of blood.”

Disher seemed to consider this, staring up at the window.

“Look at me: I’m 125 years old. Lost my legs in a car crash. Before autonomous cars took over. Didn’t fight for any kind of rights. But here I am, a survivor, and I can’t live with the guilt of doing nothing. I have to resist. I want to make a difference and … I will not let our history get wiped away.”

“History lives on,” Disher said. “Right here.”

Disher pointed to his chest. Ellison figured he was talking about his heart, but all he could see was the shirt flashing Now You See Me then Now You Don’t.

The room was silent, except for the patter of heavy rain.

Disher looked at the window again. “Ready to ex outta here?”

“You and me?” Ellison felt a surge of pride, but he knew the weather would force his prosthetics into safe mode. Probably wouldn’t get two blocks. “I don’t know—”

Disher tapped Ellison’s arm. “That was a rhetorical question.”

Ellison chuckled. Took a deep breath. And positioned himself under the window.

Then: Boom! Boom! Boom! On the restroom door.

Ellison’s legs held steady under the weight as Disher stood on his shoulders.

Disher opened the window, looked down at Ellison. “You following?”

Ellison heard keys at the door. “You go on. I’ll see you on the other side.”

“No you won’t.”

“Go on! I’ll find you—you just go and keep going. And don’t look back, you got me?”

Disher gave him a sad smile. “I got you, legacy.”

The boy pulled himself up, crawled out of the window and into the storm.

When the security guard burst in, the very old man fell to his mechanical joints.

Moments later, Ellison came out of the restroom on a stretcher. Eyes heavy. The world fading as a sedative took hold. Body going numb, but he could still feel the weight on his shoulders, where the boy had been standing. An orderly pushed him through the pre-op area. Past the line of drones he gave no damns about. He sacrificed himself to make a difference and nobody could take that away.

“You can’t make me do this!” a woman hollered at reception. A kindred spirit.

As the orderly pushed him through a door and down a white hall, toward the operating rooms, Ellison heard the receptionist over the intercom: “Need a fix on a 406.”

And that was when he saw it. At first he thought it was side effects from the sedative or his old eyes playing tricks on him. But no! There, through the window of a waiting room, he saw a group of kids sitting completely still, their heads plugged into the walls. And one of them, a girl, maybe fifteen, unplugged herself and walked out toward the pre-op area, in the same LED shirt they all wore, flashing Now You See Me then Now You Don’t.

All The New Genre TV Shows This Fall

Remember when summer TV was a dreaded wasteland of reruns you had no desire to watch, even with commercial reminders that "if you haven't seen it, it's new to you"? Fall's arrival signaled not just the start of the best season or another school year, but meant all your favorite shows would return and finally there'd be something to watch again.

The TV landscape has certainly changed since then, now that you can watch most anything on demand (or pirated in a cloud somewhere) and both streaming sites and cable channels produce some often great original shows all year long. Even so, I still look forward to fall TV with giddy anticipation — and with this being such an awesome age for genre TV and film, it's hard not to get excited at what new shows might play on post-Labor Day screens.

When it comes to this season's newbies, it's all about the paranormal and the Marvel juggernaut smashing it's way further into TV. You have an X-Men family thriller-drama starring True Blood's own Vampire Bill, along with two highly anticipated adaptations: Inhumans on ABC, and Runaways on Hulu.

On the paranormal end, you've got funny ghosts and serious ghosts, along with angels, demons, and more. There's also a new Star Trek series for the first time in a decade, and it stars the awesome Sonequa Martin-Green (formerly of The Walking Dead), but... it's only available on CBS All Access, which is like Netflix for CBS stuff.*

While I have to admit I'm not as excited about these new shows as I am for the return of Stranger Things, Mr. Robot or all out freaking war on The Walking Dead, I'll still check quite a few of them out. Channel Zero: No End House | Premieres Sep 20 on SyFy

Inspired by Brian Russell’s Creepypasta tale, Channel Zero: No-End House tells the story of a young woman named Margot Sleator who visits the No-End House, a bizarre house of horrors that consists of a series of increasingly disturbing rooms. Star Trek: Discovery | Premieres Sep 20 on CBS All Access

Star Trek, one of the most iconic and influential global television franchises, returns 50 years after it first premiered with Star Trek: Discovery. The series will feature a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers. Marvel's Inhumans | Premieres Sep 29 on ABC

The highly anticipated television series Marvel's Inhumans will bring the fan-favorite comic book series and a new kind of family drama to the small screen this fall on ABC. The Inhumans, a race of superhumans with diverse and singularly unique powers, were first introduced in Marvel Comics by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1965. Since that time, they have grown in prominence and become some of the most popular and iconic characters in the Marvel Universe. Marvel's Inhumans will explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family. Ghosted | Premieres Oct 1 on Fox

A former LAPD missing persons detective and fired Stanford astrophysics professor are recruited by a secret government agency called the Bureau Underground to examine unexplained paranormal activity in L.A. Starring Craig Robinson, Adam Scott, Ally Walker.

The Gifted | Premieres Oct 2 on Fox

Set in the X-Men universe, the drama unfolds in the mutant-phobic future and follows a family (led by True Blood’s Stephen Moyer and Amy Acker) who is on the run after discovering that both of their teenage kids have mutant powers.

Kevin (Probably) Saves The World | Premieres Oct 3 on ABC

*And now, a small rant coming in 3... 2... 1... WTF CBS? Why does every media company and their mom feel the need to start a subscription streaming service of their own? As I have yet to claw my way into the 1%, I'm not able or willing to shell out $6 a month for CBS content WITH COMMERCIALS STILL INCLUDED, and I'm sure as hell not going to pay $10 a month just to get it commercial free. Not even for my beloved Sasha. And I really wanted to support her new show. 

But there are too many other things you can get for $10: a Netflix subscription, a movie theater ticket (well, almost), 2 venti frappuccinos, 3 In-N-Out cheeseburgers, or anywhere from 1-10 ebooks. CBS is not movie-filled Netflix, nor is it HBO. And with my cable subscription I also get AMC, FX, and USA — all of which have better shows! So, dear media company executives: please put your pipes down, or at least kindly stop filling them with hallucinogenic substances. These aren't books we're talking about here, nobody needs nor wants all of these limited streaming services! /rant

1. Admittedly, a decent amount are games based on movies, tv shows, or other existing properties. Some (Simpsons: Hit & Run, Cars, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes) are based on ones I truly enjoy. Others? That’s another post for another time. 

2. I’ll acknowledge the weirdness that I have home & handheld versions of the same game with Simpsons and Spongebob games, but I feel they do enough to stand apart from each other.
