E nel buio all'improvviso appena voltato sulla sinistra comparve un palazzo con delle luci . Era il palazzo del mistero dove nessuno poteva dire cosa aveva visto e cosa c'era dentro , pena la scomparsa se il mistero fosse stato rivelato. Man mano ci si avvicinava sentivamo una gelida aria che ci sfiorava lo spirito e fin dentro alle ossa , il gelido soffio dell'incognito e del non sapere cosa ci aspettava una volta entrati dentro . Arrivati alla porta il mio pugno stava per bussare ma nemmeno il tempo di appoggiare le nocche al portone che si aprii lentamente fino a mostrare un esile uomo che ci disse " entrate siate i benvenuti nella dimora del barone Von Kausen " ci guardammo come dirci ok entriamo Gustav fece cenno di sì e i nostri passi varcarono la soglia della casa , i nostri volti restarono abbagliati da un sfarzoso ingresso con quadri e statue eleganti e nobili che inneggiavano la potenza del padrone di casa con il suo carisma e potere . I nostri sguardi non facevano che notare ogni piccolo particolare ogni piccolo dettaglio, grifoni alati statue raffiguranti potenti signori di guerra con spade , armature che brillavano e nel centro del salone un mantello sfarzoso con il nome del proprietario sul collo "VON KAUSEN" . UN NOME TERRIBILE a vederlo scritto a filo d'oro sul mantello . L'esile uomo prese i nostri mantelli umidi per la nebbia e i nostri cappelli e li porto nella sala accanto e ci fece accomodare in un comodo divano barocco con tessuti ricamati finemente. Si sentirono dei passi leggeri e dallo scalone centrale comparve una sagoma che scendeva le scale lentamente . Al momento che varco' la soglia della luce del lampadario si notò un signore magro ma ben vestito capelli bianchi e un bastone intarsiato con un cammeo azzurro sulla sommità che sembrava di enorme valore. Noi ci all'alzammo in piedi e lo onoriamo con un inchino e lui rispose con stesso gesto . Ci fece segno di sedere e si presentò " Io sono il Barone Von Kausen con chi ho il piacere di interloquire ?" Il primo a presentarsi Gustav "piacere Barone mi chiamo Gustav Edmondo Dupon messaggero del Granduca Aznar Ferdinand di Fermon . Portiamo un messaggio dalle terre perdute da parte del Granduca . Loro sono i miei compagni Dorian Fremen e Robert Victor Lazar . Appena pronuncio il mio nome il suo sguardo si portò sulla mia persona, io intimorito dal quello sguardo dissi " mi conoscete Barone? " . Il Barone mi rispose " si conosco il vostro nome , conoscevo vostro padre ! " "Mio padre? " " Si Marcel Victor Lazar prode guerriero che ha battuto i grifoni e se vuole saperlo l'armatura che è dietro di lei era la sua " . Mi voltai e noto l'armatura argento brillante e osservo due iniziali sul petto e sul copricapo , MVL . Il Barone comincia un racconto molto dettagliato di una guerra ormai perduta per i grifoni che sterminavano i guerrieri e i soldati quando ad un certo punto comparve una luce che attirò l'attenzione del grifoni , era una armatura di luce con il guerriero Marcel Victor Lazar che accecando la vista dei possenti grifoni lui approfittava con la enorme spada anch'essa brillante e abbagliante penetrandola nel loro ventre uccidendolo uno per uno. E facendo vincere ormai una battaglia che sembrava ormai perduta. Le sue gesta ritrovano molti libri sacri che risentono storia e valore , deve essere fiero di essere figlio di un padre valoroso come lui .

AS TEARS GO BY -  Une adaptation pour ne pas dire une copie de Mean streets de Scorsese, film de 1986, dernièrement rejoué en salles obscures. Wong Kar-Waï ne s’en est pas caché pas, le récit de As tears go by transpose le milieu mafieux de Little Italy à celui des triades de Kowloon. Les deux personnages centraux de Charlie/Harvey Keiteil et Johnny Boy/Robert De Niro sont repris presque à l’identique par Andy Lau et Jacky Cheung.

Il s’agit de petits mafieux de bas quartier, de la petite contrebande de rue, que l’on pourra classer dans le genre «drame urbain». A noter que non seulement des personnages de Mean streets ont été recopiés, mais également des séquences entières comme la célèbre scène de baston de la salle de billard, scène mythique qui influencera tous le style de Wong-Kar-Waï, bien au-delà de de ce premier opus sur le thème de la descente aux enfers. 

Personne n'aurait jamais entendu parler de ce film si Wong Kar-Wai n'avait pas eu la carrière qu'on lui connait. Absolument impossible de prendre la moindre scène au sérieux tant le jeu des acteurs est surfait et les choix musicaux inadaptés. Un premier film sous très grande influence, donc, pour se faire un nom et une réputation. C’est apparemment pas idiot!

NOTE 10/20 - Un film basique et largement dépassé, donc démodé.

Weeping in my tent, I lament the battles joined, not knowing (God be my witness!) which king is to blame for them. . This is a twofold realm, where either half seeks to be master; neither wishes to be a supplicant subjected to the other. England and Scotland are two Pharisaic kingdoms. This one is at the top and so is the other, lest one or the other fall. Hence spring gaping flanks, spattered with rose-red gore, embattled ranks, mown down with bitter anguish; hence wasted strength, overwhelmed by Mars, hosts engulfed while hammering out mutual conflict; hence pallid faces, one drowned, another buried; hence manifold mourning, a noise that mounts to the stars; hence wars that arise and waste the resources of the land. I cannot recount the particulars of a massacre that transcends all reckoning.

I wasn’t going to talk Bannockburn details until Saturday but I really thought these lines worth sharing. They’re attributed to Robert Baston, the Carmelite friar brought with the English army and subsequently charged by the Scots with commemorating the Battle of Bannockburn in verse in return for his release. Within this poem the full scale of the battle and the significance of the deaths of so many in  Edward II’s army is pretty obvious but no less saddening (and he really lays into the idea of both sides being ultimately hypocritical which is pretty interesting). The fifteenth century Walter Bower later quoted much of this poem in his Scotichronicon, though at least one other manuscript survives containing the poem with some extra material not found in Bower’s version. This translation was done by Ronald E. Latham and was published in D.E.R. Watt’s version of the Scotichronicon. Here’s the Latin: Bella parata fleo, lamentans sub canopeo, sub quo rege reo nescio, teste Deo.

ROBERT WADLOW: THE GENTLE GIANT (il gigante gentile)

Chissà cosa passò per la mente di Robert Wadlow, quel 27 giugno 1940 in cui fu misurato per l’ultima volta, facendo registrare l’altezza di 2,72 metri e diventando così a tutti gli effetti l’uomo più alto mai registrato nella storia. In febbraio aveva compiuto 22 anni, un’età in cui normalmente non si cresce più da tempo, mentre lui invece continuava a crescere, e il ritmo non sembrava rallentare rispetto agli anni precedenti. Nonostante i giornali pubblicassero la notizia in prima pagina e tutti gli States lo festeggiassero come una gloria nazionale, difficilmente Robert poteva sentirsi felice. La sua altezza non era un dono degli dei, ma l’effetto di una malattia, una iperplasia (crescita abnorme, spesso dovuta a un tumore benigno) dell’ipofisi, la ghiandola endocrina che regola i tempi e la velocità della crescita. 

Robert Wadlow sin dalla più tenera età era stato molto più alto dei suoi coetanei, e già a 6 anni aveva superato i 170 cm. La soglia dei 2 metri era stata passata tra il decimo e l’undicesimo anno. Parallelamente, cresceva anche la sua massa fisica: a 22 anni pesava oltre 200 kg, anche se non appariva certo grasso.

Eppure, quel ragazzo avrebbe desiderato soltanto una vita normale. Primo di cinque figli, nato il 22 febbraio 1918 e sempre vissuto ad Alton, nell’Illinois, era stato un bravo studente, anche se era stato sempre necessario costruirgli dei banchi su misura. Si era ottimamente diplomato alla High School nel 1936 e, subito dopo, si era iscritto allo Shurtleff College, l’università della sua città, in cui aveva sede una rinomata scuola di Legge, con l’intenzione di diventare avvocato. Nel giardino della stessa università, oggi, è ricordato con una statua a grandezza naturale.

Era stato anche uno scout, e aveva provato a fare tutto ciò che normalmente facevano a quel tempo i ragazzi della sua età, almeno finché gli era stato possibile. Nel tempo, le sue enormi dimensioni gli avevano dato sempre più problemi, soprattutto le gambe che erano diventate lunghissime e rischiavano di non reggere il peso del busto. A differenza di altri giganti, non aveva ceduto alla tentazione della sedia a rotelle, e aveva preferito aiutarsi a camminare con un bastone o con dei tutori ortopedici.

Una meraviglia come lui non poteva passare inosservata agli occhi dei pubblicitari del tempo, che infatti lo avevano ingaggiato come testimonial di diverse campagne, prima tra le quali quella della ditta di calzature che gli faceva le scarpe su misura. Con la pubblicità, guadagnava benissimo e ogni tanto doveva spostarsi per partecipare a degli eventi. Il 4 luglio 1940, festa dell’indipendenza, ne aveva uno alla Riserva Nazionale Manistee, nel Michigan, fondata da pochi anni e già ben conosciuta dagli escursionisti di tutto il Paese.

Affinché restasse in piedi tutto il tempo necessario a esibirsi senza stancarsi troppo, gli furono montati dei nuovi tutori metallici sulle gambe. Uno di questi, sfregando sulla cute, gli provocò una profonda escoriazione alla caviglia. Robert non se ne accorse perché, in seguito alla crescita e al conseguente stiramento dei nervi, la sua sensibilità a livello delle estremità era alquanto ridotta. Il problema fu sottovalutato dagli specialisti, la ferita si infettò e fu necessario il ricovero in ospedale, sempre a Manistee. Le terapie antibiotiche, a quel tempo, erano ancora in fase sperimentale; Robert fu trattato con un intervento chirurgico e delle successive trasfusioni di sangue. Ma qualcos’altro andò storto e, anziché guarire, sviluppò una reazione autoimmune, forse dovuta al fatto che il sangue non era del tutto compatibile con il suo gruppo. Dopo 11 giorni di agonia, il 15 luglio 1940, morì durante il sonno.

Fu trasportato ad Alton in una bara lunga quasi 3,5 metri e pesante oltre 450 kg, che si avvicendarono a portare 20 uomini durante una cerimonia pubblica cui parteciparono 40.000 persone. Fu l’ultimo addio a un ragazzo che avrebbe voluto soltanto essere normale e, prima ancora che essere una celebrità, era riuscito a farsi amare da chiunque lo avesse conosciuto: molto socievole e amichevole con tutti, protettivo con i bambini e chiunque gli apparisse debole, sempre pronto a scherzare o a mettersi in posa per una foto ricordo. Lo chiamavano “The Gentle Giant” (Il gigante gentile), un soprannome che accompagna la sua icona ancor oggi.

GLI ASSEDI DI TROINA

Il primo assedio fu verso il 1063. Il Gran Conte Ruggero I proveniente da Rometta e sulla via dei monti che collegava Messina a Palermo, aveva liberato facilmente Troina dagli arabi ed era stato accolto dalla locale popolazione bizantina con grande onore.  Ruggero era da poco sposato e quindi lasciò la sua prima moglie a Troina con una dozzina di cavalieri e si diresse verso Nicosia per assediarla e depredare i dintorni. I bizantini fecero due conti. Per prima cosa gli arabi avevano riconosciuto loro ampia indipendenza cosa che Ruggero forse non avrebbe fatto. Secondariamente i Normanni erano a favore del papa di Roma mentre loro erano di religione ortodossa, quindi i liberatori erano al pari degli arabi: miscredenti. La moglie di Ruggero con pochi cavaliere pareva essere una facile preda e con poca fatica potevano avere un grande risultato. Assalirono quindi il castello dove i Normanni risiedevano con l’obbiettivo di catturare facilmente Giuditta D’Evreux, sposa di Ruggero. Fecero male i conti. I normanni erano pochi ma erano macchine da guerra. L’assalto al castello finì in una stage di paesani con i dodici cavalieri normanni barricati nel castello a difendere strenuamente la loro signora. Venuta la notte i paesani si rifugiarono nella parte alta del paese sicuri della vendetta di Ruggero. Quest’ultimo arrivo con i suoi uomini e diede l’assalto alle posizioni bizantine. Nel frattempo però erano arrivati  cinquemila arabi a dare manforte ai bizantini. Ruggero dovette a sua volta ritirarsi nel castello per difendersi dagli arabi e dai paesani. Fu un momento tragico per i normanni chiusi nel paese dove non potevano usare la cavalleria che era la loro arma più importante. Ruggero però aveva affrontato momenti peggiori, quindi attese l’alba ed attaccò risolutamente il campo arabo riportando una grande vittoria. Amari, grande storico siciliano ( e forse non molto imparziale) sottolineò che gli arabi, per combattere il freddo avevano abusato di vino e quindi non erano nelle condizioni migliori per difendersi. Fatto stà che sconfitti gli arabi, Ruggero si rivolse contro i bizantini passandone a fil di spada la maggior parte. Questo episodio fu molto importante per Ruggero che non era solo un soldato preparato e coraggioso, ma aveva anche quella che un giornalista di oggi chiamerebbe “una visione politica”: capì che conquistare la Sicilia voleva dire dover comandare due popoli che non avrebbero esitato a combatterlo. Per questo motivo incominciò a favorire l’arrivo non solo di nobili normanni e inglesi, ma anche di contadini dal nord europa. Questo fenomeno di ripopolamento con un popolo fedele raggiunse l’apice  una volta sposata Adelaisa del Vasto signora del Monferrato che fu seguita da una grande schiera di sudditi lombardi, piemontesi e provenzali che andarono ad occupare città chiave come Sperlinga, Piazza Armerina e Sanfratello, diventando il nucleo Gallico della cultura siciliana.

Il secondo assedio avvenne durante la seconda guerra mondiale. I tedeschi e gli italiani si erano fortificati a Troina in un prologo di quello che poi sarebbe stata la battaglia di Montecassino. Un  fotografo, un giovane Robert Capa,  seguiva tra le file americane, il loro avanzare nella conquista delle case di Troina. Gli alleati, vista la difficoltà a conquistare il borgo, decidono quindi di fare quello che avrebbero fatto a Montecassino ed incominciano a bombardare dalla terra e dal cielo il piccolo paese. Fu una strage di donne, bambini, vecchi e soldati. Robert Capa fotografò l’orrore dell’assedio e la distruzione che la guerra portò. Una sua fotografia diventa un famosa come quella del miliziano spagnolo ucciso durante il suo reportage della guerra di Spagna. E’ la foto di un soldato americano che ascolta un vecchio siciliano senza scarpe, che con il suo bastone gli indica una direzione lontana.

Ora Troina è uno dei borghi più belli d’Italia. Finite sono le lotte ed i morti sui monti Nebrodi dove i boschi e la quiete sono ormai dominati dalla lontana e imponente, unica signora della Sicilia: l’Etna

The first siege was around 1063. The Grand Conte Ruggero I coming from Rometta and on the way in the mountains that connected Messina to Palermo, had easily freed Troina from the Arabs and had been welcomed by the local Byzantine population. Ruggero was recently married and therefore left his first wife in Troina with a dozen knights and went to Nicosia to besiege the town and plunder the surroundings. The Byzantines thinked about the situation. First, the Arabs had recognized them a broad independence, and Ruggero perhaps would not have done. Secondly the Normans were in favor of the pope of Rome while they were for the Orthodox religion, therefore the liberators were on a par with the Arabs: unbelievers. Ruggero's wife with a few knights seemed to be an easy prey and with little effort they could have a great result. They then attacked the castle where the Normans resided with the aim of easily capturing Giuditta D’Evreux, the bride of Roger. The made a big mistacke. The Normans were few but they were war machines. The assault on the castle ended in a stage of villagers with the twelve Norman knights barricaded in the castle to strenuously defend their lady. When the night came, the villagers took refuge in the upper part of the town, sure of Roger's revenge. The latter arrived with his men and stormed the Byzantine positions. In the meantime, however, five thousand Arabs had come to support the Byzantines. Roger in turn had to retire to the castle to defend himself from the Arabs and the villagers. It was a tragic moment for the Normans closed in the country where they could not use cavalry which was their most important weapon. Ruggero, however, had faced worse moments, so he waited for the dawn and resolutely attacked the Arab camp reporting a great victory. Mr. Amari, a great Sicilian historian (and perhaps not very impartial) stressed that the Arabs, to fight the cold, had abused wine and therefore were not in the best conditions to defend themselves. As soon as the Arabs were defeated, Roger turned against the Byzantines, passing most of them by the sword. This episode was very important for Ruggero who was not only a prepared and courageous soldier, but he also had what a journalist today would call "a political vision": he understood that conquering Sicily meant having to command two peoples who would not hesitate to fight him . For this reason he began to favor the arrival not only of Norman and English nobles, but also of peasants from northern Europe. This phenomenon of repopulation with a faithful people reached its peak once Adelaisa del Vasto was married with Ruggero and she was followed by a large group of Lombard, Piedmontese and Provencal people who went to occupy key cities such as Sperlinga, Piazza Armerina and Sanfratello, becoming the Gallic nucleus of Sicilian culture.

The second siege occurred during the Second World War. The Germans and Italians had fortified themselves in Troina in a prologue of what would later be the battle of Montecassino. A photographer, a young Robert Capa, followed their progress in the conquest of the houses of Troina in the American ranks. The allies, given the difficulty in conquering the village, therefore decided to do what they would have done in Montecassino and began to bomb the small town from the earth and the sky. It was a massacre of women, children, old people and soldiers. Robert Capa photographed the horror of the siege and the destruction that the war brought. One of his photographs becomes as famous as that of the Spanish militiaman killed during the Capa’s report of the Spanish war. It is a photo of an American soldier who listens to an old Sicilian without shoes, who with his cane indicates a distant direction.

Now Troina is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The struggles and deaths on the Nebrodi mountains are over where the woods and the quiet are now dominated by the distant and imposing, only lady of Sicily: Etna
