Here, have this interview with Käärijä in which he explains the origins of "the sailor" and other dance moves from Cha Cha Cha, recalls the first song he made, appreciates his mom, promises to play a gig in Poland some day, and basically says "maybe the real Eurovision victory was the friends we made along the way"

Radio Muzyka Frukty
Continue reading Untitled

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — An American basketball player with a professional Polish women’s club was beaten and left with a head injury midweek with the attacker later detained, according to officials and reports in Polish media on Sunday.
Mikayla Cowling, who plays for VBW Arka Gdynia, was attacked late Wednesday in a music club in Gdansk, a city in northern Poland, according to the RMF FM broadcaster, which also quoted the club saying the “brutal beating” left her with a fractured eye socket, among other injuries.
Gdansk is a neighboring city to Gdynia on the Baltic coast.
“I am outraged that such a shameful situation has occurred. Violence and aggression are unacceptable and must be opposed,” Gdynia Mayor Wojciech Szczurek said Sunday on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “Fortunately, the police quickly caught the attacker. We wish the player good health!”
The attack happened after a EuroCup women’s match where the Gdynia team defeated rivals from Switzerland, BCF Elfic Fribourg, 77-47. Cowling, who played her college basketball at Cal, scored 7 points.
The president of the Gdynia club, Boguslaw Witkowski, said in an interview with the Polish state news agency PAP that the player was attacked near the women’s restroom by a security guard.
Cowling, 27, was hit several times on the head, and when she fell, she was also kicked. The most serious injury was to her face and the athlete has a fractured orbital bone, he said. He added that she is at home under observation and will have additional tests next week.
PAP also quoted a police spokesperson who said the attacker, a 48-year-old man, was arrested on Friday.

After this photo was taken, Mikayla went out to a nightclub to celebrate a victory with her teammates. And then she was targeted and brutally beaten by a male security guard.
Poland is a destination for international professional women's basketball players looking for work. Women have been going overseas to play in Poland for decades without major problems until now.
However, in recent years, Polish society shifted far to the right. And that's relevant when a young black woman is brutally beaten by a Polish security guard.
There are many other countries talented international athletes can play in. Mikayla has also played for teams in France, Greece, Turkey, and New Zealand. These women don't need Poland. If Poland is not a safe place for foreigners and minorities, they simply won't go there anymore. And Polish professional sports teams won't be able to compete in European leagues without international talent.
Mikayla has the support of her team and teammates. But the wider women's basketball world just lost a great deal of trust in Poland.

An entire network of spies working for Russia has been dismantled in Poland, its defence minister has confirmed.
Mariusz Blaszczak praised security services, saying the threat was real, and promised more details later.
On Wednesday radio reports said a group of six citizens of countries east of Poland had been arrested.
RMF FM said the cell planned sabotage and installed dozens of secret cameras close to critical infrastructure sites near Ukraine's border.
Some cameras were near the small regional Rzeszow-Jasionka airport, which has been converted into an international logistics hub supplying military and humanitarian supplies to Ukraine, the radio report said.
Military and cargo aircraft from the US and across Europe regularly fly in and out of the airport - where American troops can be seen beside their Humvees - to deliver supplies to waiting trucks that make the 100km (62 mile) journey to the Ukrainian border.
The site is considered so sensitive Washington has deployed one of its valuable Patriot air defence systems to protect the airfield.
Last month, US president Joe Biden landed at the airport on his way to Kyiv.
The decades-long spy conflict between Russia and the West has intensified since the Ukraine war.
Poland is one of Ukraine's strongest allies and its security forces have arrested several people on suspicion of spying for Russia since the invasion last February.
Last month, prosecutors charged a Russian citizen, who is a long-term resident in Poland, with spying for Russia between 2015 and 2022.

New hot take just dropped by the Polish Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection  concerning the unfolding eco catastrophy in the Oder River:
----
“Environmental Inspectorate spokesman: Maybe the leak happened in Germany?
Since the Germans found a leak, it is not excluded that this is where the accident occurred, said Maciej Karczynski, a spokesman for the Chief Inspectorate of Environmental Protection. The spokesman, Maciej Karczynski, said in an interview with RMF FM that Poland is waiting for "credible information" coming from Germany about the detection of very high levels of mercury in the Oder River water.
This is because, according to test results in the possession of the GIOŚ, "there is no mercury in the Oder River."
Karczynski asked, however, why "no one has assumed" that the leak of the harmful substance took place on German territory, "only Poland is immediately pointed out."
The spokesman reasoned that since Germany had found "some kind of leak" it was not out of the question that the accident had occurred there.
To the comment that the water in the Oder River would have to flow upstream, the spokesman did not respond.
----
These people are absolutely unbelievable.

Russian Federation : FT: The EC will soon introduce a duty on grain from Russia of ?95 per ton It is also planned to impose 50 percent duties on oilseeds and their processed products, the newspaper writes. Russia considers the restrictions imposed by Western countries illegal. The European Commission is going to introduce duties on grain imports from Russia and Belarus in the amount of ?95 per ton in the coming days, the Financial Times writes, citing sources. According to the publication's interlocutors, this will lead to an increase in prices by at least 50% and will sharply reduce demand. It is also planned to impose 50 percent duties on oilseeds and their processed products. Brussels yielded to pressure from Poland and the Baltic countries, which demanded to limit grain imports from Russia and Belarus, FT notes. The EU feared that such a move could undermine global food markets and harm developing countries. In 2023, the European Union imported a record 4 million tons of grains, oilseeds and processed products from Russia, which is 1% of total EU consumption, the newspaper writes. According to Eurostat, last year more than 1.5 million tons of grain were imported into the EU, compared to 970 thousand tons of grain in 2022. Farmers in Poland previously blocked the border with Ukraine, demanding, among other things, restrictions on the import of cheaper agricultural products from Ukraine and, increasingly, from Russia, the newspaper recalls. The protests have become an irritant in relations between Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. In March, Tusk recalled that Latvia had banned the import of some agricultural products from Russia and Belarus, and warned that Warsaw could follow suit. At the same time, he noted that he would prefer if it were a general decision of the EU to limit the import of agricultural products from these two countries. The head of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen, responded by saying that she was ?assessing the possibility of introducing restrictions on the import of agricultural products from Russia.? Last week, the Polish radio station RMF FM reported that the EC would propose introducing quotas on grain imports from Russia and Belarus. There is no talk of a complete embargo, since, according to European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson, a ban on food imports from Russia to the EU ?could do more harm than good? due to rising prices and negative consequences for countries in the Global South. The restrictions will apply only to Russian and Belarusian imports to the European Union and will not affect transit through its territory.
