David Mattingly, 'The Apocalypse', ''Questar'', Vol. 2, #3, June 1980 According to the magazine I lifted this illustration from, it was a rejected cover for a Rick James album. There's no real information as to which album but Mattingly states that he liked his work and decided to finish the piece for his own satisfaction. To me it could easily be some VHS box cover art for a post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie from the 80s. Source

Rick J Mattingly: Fishing in the Northwoods of Wisconsin
The Northwoods of Wisconsin are the Place to be for Nature Lovers
For some people, holidays mean travelling luxuriously to popular tourist destinations and spending time relaxing in comfortable hotel rooms. Their vacation days are filled with site seeing, eating in high-end restaurants and spending time in the lap of luxury till it is time for the vacation to end. However, for some others like nature lover Richard J Mattingly, big cities and touristy crowds is not the definition of an ideal holiday.
Rick J Mattingly is a great outdoorsman who is always on the lookout for an adventure admits the lap of nature, far from the madding crowd. Admittedly, there is something about spending time in nature that makes you feel soothing and peaceful. This is why activities like fishing, hiking, boating and camping are largely preferred in place of visiting tourist sites by many people. Spending your vacations like this saves you from keeping the time and following the touring party all day.
Anyone who appreciates the decadent beauty of nature will love to go fishing in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. This place has been one of the absolute favorites of travellers and adventure-seekers for several decades now. For those who want to get away from the fast paced life of the cities and experience some simple and relaxing fun, this place will make them feel right at home. Vilas, Langlade, and Oneida are some of the popular Northwoods counties.
The Northwoods of Wisconsin are one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area and have all the amenities that city-dwellers require. That being said, it is not tough to find spots of quiet solitude where you can be one with nature and spend some quality time alone or with your loved ones. If you are a lover of woodland beauty and beautiful groves, backwater lakes, and walk paths winding through greenery make you happy, this is the place for you.
Apart from fishing and boating on the river, which are the most popular activities here, there is other stuff you can do as well. Illinois resident Rick Mattingly recommends taking walks along the forest trails, exploring the surroundings are finding your own favorite spot of scenic beauty. You will also find some authentic communities residing in this area, making it an amazingly interesting vacation destination. The people are friendly and the naturally beautiful surroundings will leave you mesmerized.

So I was thinking about when Keith suggested Charlie not wear pants and then I remembered the video of the Ya-Yas cover photo session and someone there suggesting Charlie go naked beneath his coat (or cloak or whatever that thing was). So was this another burden Charlie had to bear? People suggesting he be naked when performing various tasks? The poor man.

Richard J. Mattingly Takes To The Fairway
The famed definition of golf being a good walk spoiled is definitely not one with which Richard Mattingly would agree. An avowed sportsman, Rick Mattingly lists fishing, basketball, trail biking, American Pro-Football (the Green Bay Packers are his team of choice), and bowling as being high on his list of recreational pastimes. However, golf has provided him with some of his most memorable moments and he has been fortunate to play at some of the very best golf courses in the state of Illinois.
For Richard Mattingly, The General at Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa is one of the finest courses he has been privileged to carry his bag around. Rated as being one of the top 100 golf courses in the United States, The General - named after former Galena resident Ulysses S. Grant - is an attention-grabber as soon as you set eyes on it. Indeed, according to Rick Mattingly, from the very first tee you are left in no doubt that you are in for an exhilarating round of golf. The fairway glides downwards to a tricky 'gooseneck' approach to the green, which itself is situated in a dell surrounded by difficulties on three sides.
Like most of the greens at The General, the real problems lie off the green and demand pinpoint accuracy on your approach shots. However, as Rick Mattingly details, the greens themselves are amost all large. Moreover, given the undulating scenery, nearly of all them are without 'breaks,' meaning most first-time players tend to over-cook their putts.
But as Richard Mattingly remarks, it is the tee shots that linger most in his mind. Almost all the pins are clearly visible from the tee - as are the hazards. For Rick Mattingly, the most exciting of these is almost certainly the 357-yard 14th hole, which has an extraordinary 100-foot drop from tee to fairway allowing the intrepid to play it like a par 3. As he says, even The General's greens are memorable, even though they are not perhaps the most demanding in America.
He examples the 372-yard 8th hole, which is set into an ampitheatre of limestone and is, he says, totally unlike anything else he has ever played. As Rick Mattingly states, golf architects have a difficult task when designing resort courses. They have to take into consideration that most golfers on these courses will only play perhaps once a year, so they should not be too deceptive off the tee. The General has been superbly designed to negate the need for multiple rounds. At the same time, the architect does not want to lessen the enjoyment for members. With this in mind, the architects have done a fantastic job designing a course so beautiful that any golfer - regardless how many times he has played - will want to return again and again.

Anderson near return as White Sox host Marlins
Back at Guaranteed Rate Field after struggling through a 2-8 road trip out of the All-Star break, the Chicago White Sox could use some comfort.
It appears to be coming -- in doses, anyway.
While shortstop Tim Anderson remains on the injured list with a high right ankle sprain he sustained on June 25, the White Sox expect to put Anderson through an extensive workout before Monday night's interleague game against the Miami Marlins, which begins a season-long, 10-game homestand.
"He's doing very, very well," Chicago manager Rick Renteria said on Sunday. "We're going to put him heavily through the wringer on Monday at home, with everything -- running the bases, hitting, obviously all the fielding that he's doing -- (being) seen. We'll evaluate it, and hopefully we're in a position where he'll be out on (rehab assignment)."
Anderson ran the bases before each game of Chicago's weekend series at Tampa Bay after recently beginning fielding and hitting drills. The White Sox would welcome his return, to be sure. Anderson was hitting .317 with 11 home runs, 37 RBIs and 15 stolen bases before the injury.
"He really takes a lot of joy in competing and having that edge for us on the field," Renteria said. "It's like anybody who loves to play the game."
Miami was swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in a three-game weekend series to start a six-game road trip. Although the Dodgers routed the Marlins 9-0 in Sunday's series finale, Miami touted its resilience in the middle game. Trailing 6-0 on Saturday, the Marlins tied it before late bullpen struggles ultimately put things out of reach.
"That's the kind of team we are," Marlins third baseman Brian Anderson said. "We're not gonna take any innings off. We're gonna keep fighting until the end."
Right-hander Ivan Nova (4-9, 5.86 ERA) is set to start for the White Sox, making his first appearance at Guaranteed Rate Field since defeating the Chicago Cubs on July 7 for his first home victory of the season. Nova is 0-2 with an 8.44 ERA in two starts covering 10 2/3 innings since, but Chicago can take solace in his sterling career numbers against the Marlins.
Nova enters Monday's game with 4-0 record and 0.98 ERA in four starts against Miami, scattering three runs and 13 hits in 27 2/3 innings. It will be his first appearance against the Marlins this season.
Righty Trevor Richards (3-11, 4.24 ERA) will get the call for Miami as he seeks his first victory since June 2, having lost six of his last seven starts. Richards, who was born in Aviston, Ill., a small community in southwestern Illinois about 35 miles east of St. Louis, hasn't faced the White Sox in his career.
Marlins shortstop Miguel Rojas is day-to-day after sustaining a right shoulder strain and leaving in the fifth inning of Saturday's loss to the Dodgers.
He was out of the lineup Sunday in what Miami manager Don Mattingly called a precautionary move.
"He's all right today," Mattingly said Sunday. "We're just giving him a day to let this thing settle down. I think he'll be fine. We'll see how it goes."

Florida incident involves a frying pan wielded as a weapon
Tumblr media
This is a strange one.
Well, as reported by First Coast News:
Multiple University of Florida football players face possible university discipline after an on-campus confrontation involving airsoft guns and lying to police.
The confrontation occurred at the university’s Keys Residential Complex on the evening of May 28. It involved several UF football players and a Gainesville-area gambler named Devante’ Zachery - aka “Tay Bang” - and his friends, according to a UF police report obtained by First Coast News.
Per FCN, the players involved are tight ends C’yontai Lewis and Kemore Gamble, running back Kadarius Toney, defensive tackle Kyree Campbell, receivers Tyrie Cleveland, and Rick Wells, and quarterback Emory Jones.
No arrests or charges came from it, but this still sounds like a pretty ridiculous incident overall.
Seriously tho, can somebody tell me why the hell Mr. Tay Bang bet on the Gators last season ‍♂️ ‍♂️ ‍♂️ ‍♂️ https://t.co/1JDnlzzZ62

This was an unusual confrontation. Someone brought a damn frying pan.
Never forget your cookware.
The police report describes a frying pan that was found on the scene, said by witnesses to have been used by one of the players during the confrontation.

Side note: In 2008, former Washington State linebacker Andy Mattingly had the same idea:
First, they knocked. Then, Mattingly kicked in the door. The midfielder grabbed a steak knife, the goalie a butter knife. Mattingly picked up a frying pan off the stove.
The midfielder jumped out a window. This left the goalie -- Cesar Lira, 5 feet 10, armed with a butter knife -- to contend with Mattingly, a 6-4 linebacker swinging heavy kitchenware.
Weirdest of all, someone bet on the 4-7 Gators.
“Tay Bang” would call them “garbage” and would complain about losing money after he bet on football games,” the report states.

Above all, it’s never a good idea to paint your damn BB guns to make them resemble real guns.
“The one rifle made to look like an AR15, which Toney was carrying, had the orange tip mostly painted black making it look even more like a real rifle,” states the report obtained by First Coast News.
I don’t need to explain why this is some dumb shit. The players having these guns also violated UF’s student code of conduct, which prohibits the use or possession of any firearms — BB guns included.
Per the police report, the players involved have been recommended to the Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution department for “lying to university police.”
There’s been no official statement from the school or Florida head coach Dan Mullen at this time. The Gators are scheduled to begin fall camp on Aug. 2.

Smokeless Tobacco Is Gone From the Ballpark, if Not the Clubhouse
As many as one-third of major league players used smokeless tobacco, long a staple of baseball culture. New local bans on smokeless tobacco impact 14 major league baseball stadiums. Municipalities are, so far, lax on enforcement. If you were a Major League Baseball executive, would you also be lax or would you discipline baseball players using smokeless tobacco in locker rooms, hidden from fans? Why? What are the ethics underlying your decision?
The major league clubhouse is a sanctuary, a player’s retreat from the gawking eyes of the thousands of fans in attendance and the millions more on social media who examine his every step daily.
Over the last year, though, some players have become particularly careful even when they are in that 25-man hideaway.
Before a recent game at Citi Field, one player stood at his locker, peeked from left to right and then slipped a can of smokeless tobacco into his back pocket. There was a reason for his surreptitiousness. Since last April, a city law has banned such products for use at both the Mets’ home ballpark and at Yankee Stadium.
And yet the player may not have had to act that secretively. Although similar laws against use of smokeless tobacco now extend to 12 major league stadiums outside New York, there is no evidence that municipalities are trying to closely monitor tobacco use inside clubhouses or that they are attempting to fine players for violating any of the recent legislation.
However, Major League Baseball, which supports the bans, is doing monitoring of its own and said it has acted when it has perceived that a player has violated the local laws. First-time violators receive a written warning along with a referral to the doctor now being used as a consultant to help players to stop using smokeless tobacco. A second violation brings a fine consistent with those listed in the local ordinances.
Major League Baseball said fines had been issued but would not say how many. The fines called for in the local ordinances — sometimes just in the hundreds of dollars — are small by baseball standards.
Still, baseball officials and the local authorities seem to be hoping that perhaps more than any fines, the publicity generated by the new laws will paint a starker picture of smokeless tobacco and serve as a stronger deterrent to its use — and not only among major leaguers.
“The bigger goal is about ending the influence on young people,” said Rick Coca, a spokesman for José Huizar, the Los Angeles city councilman who introduced the smokeless tobacco legislation there. “And that’s going to occur over time, not overnight,” he added.
A study released in 2014 by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society estimated that as many as one-third of major league players used smokeless tobacco, long a staple of baseball culture. These days, observation of various clubhouses suggests that the figure might be a little high. Before recent games at Citi Field and Yankee Stadium, one team had at least four players with smokeless tobacco containers in the clubhouse; other teams had no visible usage.
Players are no doubt aware of the health risks of smokeless tobacco, particularly after the Hall of Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn died in 2014, at age 54, of salivary gland cancer. Gwynn began using smokeless tobacco in 1977, and he attributed his cancer to frequent consumption.
Nevertheless, a number of players said they viewed the new laws as an invasion of personal rights.
Mets outfielder Curtis Granderson does not use smokeless tobacco and says he tries to embrace a healthy lifestyle. But as a veteran leader on the team, which has had several smokeless tobacco users in recent years, he is critical of the ban in New York.
“There still isn’t 100 percent clarity in terms of who’s going to be enforcing it,” said Granderson, who also sits on the board of the players’ union. “Is it the Citi Field law enforcement? Is it going to be the police? Is it going to be the New York State Police? Is it going to be Major League Baseball? If someone in the dugout — like we have security there for our protection — if they see a player that’s using smokeless tobacco, are they going to slap them with a ticket at that time?”
One player who uses smokeless tobacco thought the law created an unnecessary burden for players who should be focused on baseball rather than the risk of becoming scofflaws.
“I do definitely look around,” said the player, who requested anonymity because he had played at Citi Field. “Like, are there any cameras on me?”
A spokeswoman for the New York mayor, Bill de Blasio, said city enforcement of the smokeless-tobacco ban was complaint-based; anyone can file a complaint by calling 311. The law falls under the Smoke-Free Air Act, which also bans smoking and electronic cigarette use in bars, restaurants, workplaces and other locations.
“Enforcement has consistently focused on owners/operators, rather than smokers,” the spokeswoman wrote in an email. “We haven’t received any complaints or fined any players.”
In New York, Citi Field and Yankee Stadium are required to post signs informing patrons and players of the ban on smokeless tobacco. At Yankee Stadium, smokeless tobacco is prohibited throughout the ballpark. At Citi Field, there is a twist: Smokeless tobacco is allowed in three designated locations that are inside the ticket turnstiles but outside the stadium walls.
Enforcement and penalties for the use of smokeless tobacco vary by city. In Boston, the city police handle citations and violations, although Lt. Detective Michael P. McCarthy said that none had been issued.
McCarthy added that an officer had to witness an infraction. Even then, he told The Boston Globe last year, it would probably result in an officer’s issuing only a warning.
In San Francisco, the law is enforced by the police department and public health officials, according to Jess Montejano, a legislative aide for Mark Farrell, the board supervisor who introduced that city’s smokeless tobacco legislation in 2015. Montejano said he believed that no player had been fined at AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants.
“The law is really supposed to act as a deterrent to chewing, which it seems it has,” Montejano wrote in an email.
Similarly, no fines have been handed out in Washington, where the local health department is responsible for enforcement, or in Los Angeles, where the police administer the law, according to officials from both cities.
When the first laws were enacted in recent years, there was some belief that managers would be asked to warn players who continued to use smokeless tobacco.
That may not be the case, however. Miami Marlins Manager Don Mattingly, who used smokeless tobacco sporadically throughout his playing and managerial career, has not made enforcement a pressing issue.
“I haven’t even paid attention, honestly,” Mattingly said. “That’s a political issue, really, in my mind. I don’t like politics that much.”
When Yankees Manager Joe Girardi was asked whether his players were abiding by the ban, he said: “I don’t sit around and check on them. But they’re reminded, just like with all the other rules that we have.”
Under the sport’s collective bargaining agreement, rookies called up to the major leagues this season are not allowed to use smokeless tobacco in any ballpark, regardless of whether there is a local ban. And use of smokeless tobacco in the minor leagues, where few players are covered by the union, has been banned since 1993.
Major League Baseball also offers cessation programs for players who want to stop using smokeless tobacco. Dr. Michael B. Steinberg, director of Rutgers University’s tobacco-dependence program, is a consultant and the doctor to whom first-time violators are referred.
Alternatives to the stimulant effect offered by smokeless tobacco have emerged, too — most prominently, the coffee-grind pouches that are being marketed to players.

My favorite drum book This isn't one of the books that you blast through than put it up on the shelf to collect dust. There is a lifetime of work on this book that will keep the most seasoned drummers challenged. I'm personally on my third copy since I started working out of it in High School (im 42 now) I'm always finding ways to use Chesters ideas to help me work on problem areas. The best part is, if you take your time and work one of these systems from beginning to end you will actually feel yourself become a better player. It may take an hour it may take a couple of day. But you will notice improvement in the aspect of your playing that the particular system is designed to challenge. And in today's instant gratification society that can very beneficial for a young player to keep him or her interested. Go to Amazon
My favorite drum book I was in band all through school, as well as marching band. I was looking for a similar, yet practical approach to learning things on the drum set instead of snare. This is it. Go to Amazon
This book is a direct pathway to being a better all-around player This book is a direct pathway to being a better all-around player. It improves time, coordination, and concentration. If every drummer could spend just 20 minutes per day of concerted effort with this book, the standard would be set even higher. Simply put, using this book yields tangible improvement felt overnight. I'm assuming Gary Chester was the first to really employ and capitalize on this system of development - if not, he sure packaged it nicely into a timeless book right here. I highly recommend putting in the extra effort and vocalizing the various parts as he suggests... and also playing the systems with the left-hand leading (if you're right-handed). Ari Hoenig applied this same method to triplet-based music in his "Systems" book. Also highly recommended. Working through this book will get serious results. Go to Amazon
A great, great book If you read this you're probably familiar with the concept. It obviously helps your independence, probably the best book on the marked for that, but it also helps you to monitor your playing in "realtime" - which to me is the greater reward. I suggest this book along with Benny Greb's "Art and Science of the Groove", Stick Control: For the Snare Drummer by George Lawrence Stone and Jojo Mayer's video on stick control. Go to Amazon
Classic Teaching from an Icon I have only started to work with this book. I knew very little about Gary Chester, but I bought this book based on reputation alone. Go to Amazon
Take Your Drumming to a New Level I'd call myself an intermediate player now and it's because of books like this one with its creative exercises. I've just started, 'm doing about 3 exercises per day and I've already seen improvement in my coordination. The exercises are challenging enough but do-able. Go to Amazon
A Real Eye-Opener... This book changed my approach to drumming in unexpected and positive ways. If you put the time into approaching the systems outlined here, you will surely advance from a drummer to a musician. Gaining independence between a drummers hands and feet opens windows of musical expression that would otherwise not be available. If you are serious about drums from a musical and artistic point of view, I can't recommend this book enough to help get you there. Plus, the addition of a CD interview with Gary Chester and Danny Gottlieb (original drummer with Pat Metheny)is quite insightful. Go to Amazon
PERFECT drum book for amateur to advanced Previous reviews are correct, this book is hard. But it's meant to be a challenge to everyone whether their just learning to read music (which I am) so someone who needs more stick patterns and whatnot to try out. The author is a genius writing this book with all the real-world experience that he's acquired over his many years of playing many different types of music. This book will slowly but surely give you most of the tools you'll need to be well on your way to impressive drumming, if you have the patience for it. It'll make you work for it, but as any musician knows, working for it is the only real way to get anywhere with an instrument. Very highly recommended book!!! Go to Amazon
Upped My Game Requires at least two high-hats, focuses on site reading skills Great exercises for all levels Five Stars Five Stars Five Stars Five Stars Five Stars Five Stars Beware! Audio Download is an Interview Only - No Drumming Audio AT ALL

Rick J Mattingly- Glowing Testament to a Fine Management Career
When looking at one's professional career, you can look back upon the achievements you have made, as well as how well you have built positive relationships with colleges and managers. Their positive praise can also be another indication of how well you've managed to carry out your roles and responsibilities. Rick Mattingly is one such man who has enjoyed a fruitful career in inventory management strategies and tactics, and used his leadership skills and analytical nous to help improve the internal structures of all the companies he has worked with.
Rick J Mattingly perhaps did some of his finest work when working for the American Hotel register Co. as a logistics and forecast manager. Here he was able to reach a number of impressive achievements which bolstered his already impressive portfolio of management expertise. In his position here, he maintained a budget inventory level while keeping fill rates within company goals. He worked with the warehouse to improve the flow of priority shipments from receipt to shelf, and managed to coordinate the kitting of many new exciting projects. He also teamed up with a colleague to sell over $750k of product to another major textiles company in the industry.
He continues today to work with the warehouse department to create efficiencies and streamlining processes to improve the flow of product through the building. He also educates top level management in regards to the time and effort required to reach company goals and objectives. And for his hard work and dedication, Richard Mattingly has received glowing reviews from his managers.
As they quote, ''Rick's skill at translating customer queries, customer service queries and salesmen queries into deliverable orders from our vendors highlights his excellent communication abilities. The final proof of this is I cannot recall a single time any of these large special orders has resulted in a return of product due to errors.''
Rick Mattingly has achieved well across the board, and his colleagues often testify to his immense teamwork skills and supporting workers and colleagues to help work towards achieving company goals. He has been a vital cog in the machine that has helped the company raise its inventory management strategies, and innovate new ways to save on storage and in doing so increase revenue to make the company more profitable in the long run. Rick J Mattingly's career looks set to continue in a similar positive vein in the future.
