About last night.. I had a wonderful time at Sugar Monk, the new speakeasy in Harlem. It's elegant, sexy, and the owners are such a delight. The cocktails were amazing!! Daily MCO Drink #379, MCO Day #381: LE TOUR EIFFEL, made with 2.5 parts Remy Martin VSOP cognac, 1/2 part Cointreau triple sec, 1/2 part gentian liqueur, 1 dash absinthe, stirred over ice and strained. Adapted from a 2007 recipe by Gary ‘gaz’ Regan, who came up with it after wondering how a Sazerac would be like if it had been invented in France instead of New Orleans. The Remy and Cointreau go well together, obviously, but the surprise is the gentian liqueur, which stands out at first, but graciously gives way for the cognac to shine on the palate before showing up to dominate the finish once more. Meanwhile, the absinthe just continuously pops up in the background like trying to say, “Notice me, Senpai!”. This bad boy snapped with a load of Bere #barley shortly after #RemyCointreau purchased the #distillery. The crew worried the company would opt for a new, modern, more efficient #mash tun instead of the expensive and time consuming repair of this #antique. It was a moment of truth. The three-century-old rum brand, Mount Gay Rum from Barbados celebrated its 314th anniversary recently. The rum born in 1703 in the Caribbean island Barbados was originally called “Kill-Devil” by the Barbadians who first distilled it. The abundance of molasses combined with the culinary ingenuity of early settlers and, of course, their legendary thirst for alcohol lead to this unique discovery in the production of spirits.
Prarrthona Pal Chowdhury, the newly appointed Country Manager – Indian Subcontinent at Rémy Cointreau held a tasting and celebratory event recently in Mumbai for a small group of rum aficionados. Commenting on the Indian market she said, “alcohol is no longer about drinking but rather about decadence and Remy Cointreau as a company appeals to this luxurious self-indulgence of people”.
This is also the first activity which has kick-started Remy Cointreau’s second innings in the Indian market after the French company decided to shut the India office in 2015 following a five-year long operation through a wholly-owned subsidiary. Although the sales and distribution channel was active through its partner Sula Vineyards for the last two years. However, with the appointment of Prarrthona Pal Chowdhury, the company now aims to revive its market plan for not just India but also a number of other south-Asian markets.
Besides Mount Gay Rum, Remy Cointreau will also be designing a new marketing plan and strategy for its other brands such as Remy Martin, Cointreau, St-Remy VSOP and XO Brandy and the most iconic cognac brand Loius XIII. It is worth noting that in 2013 Remy Cointreau India had announced a joint venture with Nashik Vintners, owner of Sula Vineyard, for launching India-specific brands. Ironically the first spirit brand which came out from this JV was launched later in 2015 and became Sula Vineyards first premium spirit brand called JANUS, a 100 % grape brandy.
It will be interesting to see if Remy Cointreau will revisit the plan to introduce more such India-specific brands in the near future.

Where has Mount Gay Rum been all my life? I'm the one who was tardy to the rum party since Mount Gay was established in 1703. Their master blender, Trudiann Branker, came though NYC to lead us through a tasting of some of the rums that have the same great taste with her special touch. The rum makes fabulous cocktails and the XO is perfection when served neat. Loved every minute of it. And I have to add that Branker is the first female master distiller in Barbados. Daily MCO Drink #351, MCO Day #353: BIR PLETOK, made with 30ml Crystal Head Vodka, 20ml Cointreau, 15ml lime juice, 10ml simple syrup, shaken over ice and strained i to pilsner glass then topped with Tiger Crystal lager beer. Invented by legendary Indonesian bartender Hamami Mamiek, this is a drink many consider the ‘national cocktail’ of Indonesia. As far as beer cocktails go, this is definitely one I coukd drink more of. It’s certainly a refreshingly unique drink. While beer and lime juice not uncommon, the added touch of Cointreau gives it a slightly fruitier and pleasant flavour, which should appeal to even those who don’t drink beer. Happy National Cognac Day! As you know Cognac is my favorite spirit. I want to give a shout to Hennessy and Remy Martin for their words on the current events. Going to sip some of this XO or make an Old Fashioned with some VSOP. Wish I had some Remy in the house as well. It tends to be a running joke that black people love Hennessy, Most people think it's because of rap music, but it goes deeper than that. Hennessy has had a long standing relationship with the African American community. Here are some highlights: -They hired one of the first African-American vice presidents in the United States - After Jesse Owens won in the Olympics he felt humiliated by how he was treated; Hennessy helped create an award in his name which honors an athlete every year -They hired Josephine Baker as an ambassador -In 1909 they were the NAACP’s first corporate sponsor -They took a chance and became the first spirit to advertise in an African-American publication, that magazine was Ebony/Jet And these is so much more. Hennessy saw that we had a love of their spirit so they made an effort to be a part of the community. So yes..we are loyal AF to them!
