If we’re truly trying to please Allah, remember to ask yourself, “What would please Allah MOST right now?” It may be that the answer is to devote a chunk of that time to the Book of Allah.

Lowering your gaze brings light to the heart, just as letting the gaze wander brings darkness to it. Allah mentioned the verse of light immediately after the command to lower the gaze, as He (ﷻ) Says: “Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts…” [al-Noor 24:30] Then right after that He (ﷻ) Says: “Allaah is the Light of the Heavens and the Earth. The parable of His Light is as (if there were) a niche and within it a lamp” [al-Noor 24:35] The likeness of His (ﷻ) Light in the heart of His believing slave who obeys His Commands and heeds what He Prohibited. If the heart is enlightened, Blessings will come to it from all sides, but if it is darkened, calamity and evil will come to it from all places. Whatever exists of innovation, misguidance, following whims and desires, avoiding true guidance and turning away from the means of happiness and focusing on the means that lead to doom, that will be recognizable by means of the LIGHT that is in the heart. If that light is lost then one will be left like a blind man stumbling in the darkness. Oh Allah (ﷻ) Illuminate us with Your light. Protect it from withering and if put out, Grant us the Wisdom to acknowledge it and strive to run to You for Help. Forgive us our shortcomings, ya Allah. Keep us from bad company and help us busy ourselves with those whose hearts are synchronized to You and Your Remembrance. Oh Allah (ﷻ) Bless those who are good company to others. Those who advise and educate and remind one another. Join us with them and leave us not to ourselves. Giving sadaqah and working to help the Ummah can feel really motivating/rewarding, but remember that there are some acts that no amount of these can make up for if the goal is getting closest to Allah. Remember that some prophets had no followers and minimal worldly results, but they were still amongst the best of mankind. Think why that is. When Allah praises His prophets, it’s usually because of these intangible qualities; that they were patient (Saabir), repeatedly repenting (Awwab), truthful (Siddiq), forbearing (Haleem), willing to submit, dutiful to parents, remembering of the akhirah, and more. This dunya is a comprehensive test - not a one dimensional one.
