Shuffle your favorite playlist and post the first five songs that come up. Then copy/paste this ask to your favorite mutuals.
Stars - “Trap Door” (it’s been in my head for days and i am still in love)
Eisbrecher- “Tanz mit mir” (still listening to all the Eisbrecher, all the time)
Snook - “Mister Cool” (back in around 2010 on livejournal’s fanmix community i found an album introducing swedish songs to the internet and this one was on it. still fun to listen to)
the_miracle_aligner - “The Boulevard of Broken Dreams (Classical Latin)” (i love this and i am going to learn all the lyrics)
Blackmoore’s Night - “Ghost of a Rose” (i first heard this in a Spike/Drusilla fanvid - linked - and still think of it every time i listen to the song. the username matches but i swear i saw the fanvid in like 2004 or so and not…twelve tears ago.)
Honorary Mention: George Benson - “On Broadway” (All that Jazz 1979 soundtrack)

First ten lines writing meme - Rules: share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics and tag ten people. If you have written less than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway.
Tagged by@pepperf <3
If you see this and you write fic, them *bam* you have been tagged.
1. It Never Rains in California - Part 3 of You Owe Me, Supernatural [upcoming]
“It’s not working.” Sam scuffs the ground with his shoe, careful to avoid messing up the sigil drawn on the asphalt, or the devil’s trap around it.
“It has to work,” Dean says, relighting a candle and repositioning it carefully. “It’s a summoning spell. Why isn’t anyone being, you know, summoned?”
2. Method Acting - Part 2 of You Owe Me, Supernatural
He feels the warding give way like skin under a knife, quick and slick until it all spills out messy, and sighs. He’s in no fit state for company, and whatever’s broken through should know it’s not welcome. Still, Crowley merely lies there on the bed with his hand in the air, fingertips barely pressing against each other, and waits.
3. A Lover I Don’t Have to Love - Part 1 of You Owe Me, Supernatural
“You bloody what?”
Castiel shifts uncomfortably. “I’m asking—”
“No, don’t,” Crowley says, holding his hand up. “I heard you the first time.”
Castiel watches him for a moment, then prods him with, “Well? Will you—”
“Chrissakes, don’t say it. Someone’ll hear you.”
4. Time In Between - Part 6 of The Time Novels, Supernatural
Life is made up of a Before and an After. Or at least that's how it is in stories. In reality, things are not that simple. There's not just one Before, one After, one single defining moment when the stone is thrown into the water and after that it's nothing but ripples. Instead, there are many moments, little bends in the road, sharp twists and even sharper turns. Although numerous, these moments of change are not, of course, all equal in size.
5. A Crown for Autumn - The Hobbit
Thorin crushed the dry leaves under his boots as he walked amongst the trees. He had left Thranduil behind, sitting under an evergreen. Moping.
6. Alive - Mad Max: Fury Road
Nux tried to swallow, sand gritty on his tongue, and instead tried to spit. Both actions were futile. Maybe he could open his eyes? Light stabbed right into his skull and he winced. Well, at least he knew he could indeed open his eyes.
7. The Opposite of Love - The Avengers
Thor stood in front of his brother’s cell as Loki resolutely ignored him. “Brother, please...” It was the sixth time in as many days that Thor came down here, to the dungeons, and stood before his brother.
8. In the Mountains There Is a Promise - The Avengers
When Loki raised his hands in surrender on Midgard a second time, it was in earnest. For all his cunning and magic, it was as it had always been in Asgard, with might winning out. He wondered how well Thor had fared against the Hulk, up there in the sky, gutting the ship from the inside.
9. Time Has Come - Part 4 of The Time Novels, a Supernatural NaNoWriMo
“Relax, we’re going to be fine.”
Chip grit his teeth and swallowed hard, his stomach churning. “We are not,” he managed to grind out, “going to be fine.” Beside him, Steve huffed. “We’re on the edge of a fucking precipice. That is far beyond fine.”
A hand gripped Chip’s shoulder and gave it a reassuring squeeze. “It’s a highway, man.”
“Yeah, over a fucking precipice.” Chip squeezed the door handle harder and focused on the feel of the breeze on his face from the open window, the hand on his shoulder.
10. Time is Running Out - Part 3 of The Time Novels, a Supernatural NaNoWriMo
Chip turned over onto his side and nestled his face into a warm shoulder.  His own shoulder was cold — he never seemed to be able to keep the sheets up over him when he slept — but the rest of him was warm.  Steve was always the one to keep them covered during the night, one hand gripping the edge of whatever it was they were using — sheets, blankets, comforters, and on one memorable trip, sleeping bags — and keeping it over the both of them whenever they shifted.  Not that Steve was a light sleeper — neither of them was, and their combined arsenal of alarm clocks testified to that — but he seemed to have this constant awareness of place, even while he was sleeping.

For the writer meme: 1, 3, 10, and 23! And *hugs*
1. What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?) - oh lawdy. depends on the reader's fandom of choice, but i'd probably steer them towards the short one shots? prooobably not the sexually explicit ones, because that feels...weird to recommend. though i am still stupidly proud of A Lover I Don't Have to Love for supernatural so i might offer that one for supernatural anyway. (apparently it's converted a few to the fic's pairing, which \o/ ) i think maybe Synonyms for mad max: fury road, maybe Half-Open Doors for the hobbit. still very pleased with Love is Just a Blood Sport for teen wolf. so yeah, just the short character-driven This Was a Moment stories.
3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics? - bless you pepper, you already asked me this. answered here.
10. How do you decide what to write? - the muses get me in a chokehold. i was going to make that struck-out joke answer but yeah, basically. i get an image or a moment and just pull on that thread.
23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to? - double bless <3 answered here.

For the fic writer questions: 3, 7, and 23!
3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics? - well, aside from the obvious Just How Touch-Starved Is the Author, Anyway? i have repeated the image of blooming flowers (specifically the sped-up videos) quite a few times. anxiety and torture come up often. thruples are apparently a given. bed-sharing too. some fish-out-of-water. and of course the basics, like pining, angst, hurt/comfort... i also tend to do Limited Third Person narration a lot, and describe details like a little camera swooping around, but never getting a wide-shot. (basic descriptions, whomst?)
7. Any worldbuilding you’re particularly proud of? - super proud of the worldbuilding @seschat and i did for a modern AU of the hobbit. the actual main stories are in a wall of text in various documents, but the bones of it - and some stories - are in this livejournal community.
23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to? - *looks through the list like i'm at the grocery store* *sees Body Sharing and instantly needs cas and crowley to bicker in a single meatsuit* Huddling for Warmth looks nice. Presumed Dead, soon, my lovely. idk, i can never think of what tropes there are out there, and i've written pretty varied stuff, and my brain just went etch-a-sketch on me right now so i remember Nothing, so... something i've never written, but would? i guess...fluff? fluff would be nice.

Show me, he says, like the angel isn’t delivering himself up for the slaughter. Crowley runs his tongue over his teeth and swallows hard, ridding himself of a lingering taste he hasn’t had yet. Bloody idiots, the two of them. But they made a deal, he’s getting a favour, and aside from the pure existential terror of it all, he’s having a grand time.

For the 'Weird questions for writers' ask, bc I liked that one: 3, 11, 22, 32, 40. (I know you're away at the moment, so I'm not expecting you to get to this one soon!)
3. What is your writing ritual and why is it cursed? - tucked away in bed with the laptop at night while everyone is asleep. cursed because i, too, would like to be asleep. i also tend to reread a good few pages of Previously On... to get the brain back into proper gear, which eats away at my writing time.
(back when i had a working ipad but not a working [read: non-flammable] laptop, i'd write in the notes app with no line breaks ever. this was double-cursed but resulted in great workflow.)
11. Do you believe in the old advice to “kill your darlings?” Are you a ruthless darling assassin? What happens to the darlings you murder? Do you have a darling graveyard? Do you grieve? - not really. wanton murder of characters for the sake of killing them and not because the plot Requires it seems a bit much. but if the story needs it? kill them dead and make it count.
i'm not quite that ruthless, or i wasn't last time i thought about Required Character Death, back when i was writing a Time novel* and considered killing one darling. i couldn't do it. i wanted a properly happy ending, damnit. (but then again, i did write into being a character as Already Dead and then fleshed him out with flashbacks into a Real Proper Character and i felt so bad about him always being dead. sorry, kid.)
...hang on, i just googled the thing and:
You kill your darlings when you decide to get rid of an unnecessary storyline, character, or sentences in a piece of creative writing—elements you may have worked hard to create but that must be removed for the sake of your overall story.
oooh.
in that case... sometimes i do surgical removal, sometimes i do rewriting and absorption. mainly for sentences, paragraphs, imagery... once a whole scene that never really vibed (i have it saved in a document, a.k.a. scene purgatory). i also have a lot of dialogue and even whole scenes written out in notes or fully-fleshed-out form that i try to include into the main text but if it doesn't fit, it doesn't fit. they might get a showing as a "deleted scene" at the end of the story, or if i can rewrite them, keeping some elements or turns of phrase, then great.
i don't do it for storylines or characters, because i weigh that as i write, generally. (or, as i'm doing now, i write an AU of the Established Story once it's done and go hogwild. everyone dies now and it's all horrible, woohoo!)
22. How organized are you with your writing? Describe to me your organization method, if it exists. What tools do you use? Notebooks? Binders? Apps? The Cloud? - when it's short-form, i just write it out in one sitting. for long-form, like with the AU of the Time novels, i have:
word documents of scenes, snippets, and ideas written years ago, in vague chronological order. i would love to have these printed out so i can move them around and get a good grasp of what's going on but, alas.
word document of current work (now divided into 50-pages-each documents because it was starting to get too big) with scene breaks. chapter breaks and titles to be added upon posting.
word document with current snippets and ideas in bullet points, some colour-coded to group same events together
notebook with scenes, snippets, and ideas, which are transcribed into the main text or the notes document when they're being incorporated into the story
old receipts with snippets and ideas kept by the bed, scribbled in the dark, to be transcribed into the notebook
my brain, with swiss-cheese memory of good bits i need to write down because it all goes away forever
very many tabs open during Actual Writing, mostly involving the thesaurus and dictionary, and so many google searches where i try to find out what Obscure Thing is called (car engines and gun parts, my beloathed) as well as some maps.
32. What is a line from a poem/novel/fanfic etc that you return to from time and time again? How did you find it? What does it mean to you? - if we're talking fanfic, there's only one line that has been seared into my brain since...2002, i think:
At his first thrust, Obi-Wan opened to him as if welcoming him home.
^ Darth Maul vs. His Imagination by Darth Grey over on The Sith Academy
i found it while reading the entire Sith Academy archive during my "zomg Darth Maul ngh yiss" era. Context is Lovers Reunited After Separation (with bonus Repressed Emotions) and, i don't know why, that second half hit me in the feels and just never let go. something about love and finding home in other people and physical expression and *gestures vaguely* it still comes to mind a lot.
if we're talking poem, then living rent-free in my brain since...mid 2000s (?) is the line:
If it cries to you that it hurts, / if you can, / ease its pain.
^ "Instructions" by Neil Gaiman
which i probably came across in his blog. it just, as the kids say, vibes with me. (or rather, it's how i try to live. that if line is important, though.)
if we're talking novel then...i got nothing. (aside from dearly wishing to erase the extremely visceral sensation that reading a passage of Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns produced. it's where a character is forced to chew rocks until her molars break. because it's been years and i can still feel it.)
40. Please share a poem with me, I need it.
"The Purple Cow" (1895) by Gelett Burgess:
I never saw a Purple Cow, / I never hope to see one, / But I can tell you, anyhow, / I'd rather see than be one!
*series of novels i wrote for NaNoWriMos.

Music asks! 1, 5, 13, 23, and 28. <3
1: A song you like with a color in the title - i could swear in a past iteration of this meme, years back, i answered cat stevens' rubylove, so i will offer another song:
"silver" by moist off their debut album Silver (1994)
youtube
5: A song that needs to be played LOUD - been really into eisbrecher lately and while "FAKK" (Liebe mach Monster, 2021) doesn't need to be played at full-blast, the chorus absolutely needs to be sung out with your whole chest:
youtube
13: One of your favorite 80’s songs: rick astley's never gonna give you up okay i didn't grow up with this song and only discovered it via the no dogs in space podcast's episodes on the replacements but i have been in love with "androgynous" (Let it Be, 1984) ever since i heard it:
youtube
but if we're talking about songs i love from the eighties that i actually listened to in the eighties...then i'd say "gimme hope, jo'anna" by eddy grant (File Under Rock, 1988).
23: A song that you think everybody should listen to - in a previous version of this meme i answered queen's "bohemian rhapsody" (A Night at the Opera, 1975) and i stand by that because have you seen the Green Day crowd of the hyde park concert in 2017? but if i had to give a second song then...y'know, fuck it: "no shelter" by rage against the machine (Godzilla: The Album, 1998 - i told y'all this album was a banger)
youtube
28: A song by an artist with a voice that you love - matt berninger of the national, my beloved, and "laugh track" ft. phoebe bridgers (First Two Pages of Frankenstein, 2023)

For the fic writer meme (see this is much nicer, lol): 5, 18, and 32. :)
5. Share one of your strengths. - *visibly sweating* limited third person pov, maybe? when they're having ~emotions~ or describing things in "camera focuses over here then here" ways? i? don't know?
18. Do you use any tools, like worksheets or outlines? - bullet points at the bottom of my wip document or scraps of receipts for those same bullet points. mainly they're lines of dialogue or description i want to be sure i don't forget to include.
32. How do you feel about smut? - pretty good? i write it, though i do focus more, again, on the ~emotions~ (yearning, my beloved) than the full-frontal descriptions. think i'm getting the hang of it? i am again full of question marks?

Horrible questions meme (whyyyy???): 7, 24, 30, 52
07: What did you last eat? - uh, lunch. beef stew and taters and salad. but not enough because anxiety just do me like that.
24: What is/are/were your best subject(s)? - biology and english lit.
30: What’s irritating you right now? - too drained in every way to be irritated. but my neighbor played techno so loud this morning i could hear it all the way across the house so uh, that was fun.
52: Do you believe everything happens for a reason? - we talking Reason reason and not "oh look cause and effects, oh physics my beloved"? because in that case i sure as fuck hope not, jesus christ that'd be a horrible thought, knowing i deserve everything that's happened. "it happened" is much better than "you had it coming".

Favourite movie trilogy of all time: i had to go googling lists of trilogies because i didn’t want to say lord of the rings because like, i like them, but not Be Still, My Heart levels of like. said lists reminded me of the joy that was the mexico trilogy, which i enjoyed immensely, and tiny child me was always happy to watch the back to the future trilogy which was always on tv. but i am going to say my Beloved trilogy is, of course, three flavours cornetto trilogy. because yes. (i remember watching shaun of the dead in cinemas and the absolute joy that was experiencing, for the first time, what it’s like for the whole audience to laugh at the jokes. it was such a lovely community bonding experience.)
Main character of the last book you read / a book you’re currently reading: well i’m currently reading a poetry collection (some things i still can’t tell you: poems by misha collins. send help.) and the last book i read was a non-fiction true crime (the man from the train by bill james and rachel mccarthy james. i suffered.) and i literally haven’t cracked my reading-in-progress portrait of a lady by henry james (please also send help) since Before the Plague so...the “spirited young American woman, Isabel Archer”, i guess.
though i am absolutely, positively, totally, going to start reading el tiempo entre costuras, so that’d be Sira Quiroga, who “forges a new identity [and] becomes the most sought-after couture designer for the socialite wives of German Nazi officers". spanish civil war and spies, oh my! (the novel was a huge hit here, as was the tv series.)
Favourite colour combination: *stares blankly* uh. turquoise and white? the bisexy flag? those are nice.
Most common (food?) craving: i am in desperate need of a big bowl of cold watermelon and melon. but, uh, crunchy salty things are up there. also sour gummies. idk, mostly my cravings are “i require sustenance”. if it’s for anything specific it’s because i haven’t had it in ages and probably won’t for ages either so it’s more of a wistful memory.
Favourite word: all that’s coming to mind right now is amalgamate...
Word count of the last writing piece you worked on: 55,925 oops.
Current obsession(s): the above oops. too wrung out for anything else. (don’t tell my embroidery and sewing projects, they wouldn’t understand. or my language-learning efforts, they definitely don’t understand.)
No-pressure tagging: @icarus-suraki, @seschat, @beenworkingonacocktail

Weirdly specific asks: 5, 11, 24, 26
5) favorite form of potato? - fries, blessed cylinders of crunch and soft interior.
specifically craving these suckers right now:
Tumblr media
when i lived in the netherlands i'd always get them with remoulade sauce, though the curry one was a close second.
11) anything from your childhood you’ve held on to? - loads of things, despite - or perhaps because of - moving so much. i guess it's easier to let go of things when you have everything else from your childhood. (y'know, the places, the people. all i have are tokens and shitty memory.) so i have old toys (even Happy Meal ones, like Oliver and Company and The Little Mermaid), stuffed animals (one on my bed to this day), diaries, drawings, letters... mom's kept some shoes and baby things too.
24) which do you find yourself using, american or british english? - canadian english :> which is to say mostly british spelling with american vocabulary sprinkled with canadian vocabulary. (i do not say flat. or boot. or lift. or escalator. i do say tuque. and dép, because quebec. and it's aluminium.)
look, baby-me learned british english and spelling. the accent died quickly but the spelling tried to shift to american but then the canadian education fricked me up and now i'm a mess. extra u? don't mind if i do. was it -re or -er? whatever.
26) how’s your spice tolerance? - good, i think? not thai-spicy, but indian-restaurant spicy. eats-spicy-mexican-sweets spicy. says-"is that all?"-to-prepackaged-korean-food-labeled spicy. puts-chilis-and-hot-sauce-on-food spicy. and how can we forget, was-disappointed-by-hot-takkis spicy.

For the writing meme! As you asked me so many (and they really are such good questions): 4, 10, 18, 20, 28, 33, 37!
4. Do you have any OCs? Do you have a story for them? - I do. Some are born out of necessity, because roles need to be filled and sometimes the canon's roster is sparse.
But I also have My Darlings, which are characters that have more meat on their bones. (And a lot of those bones are mine.) My Supernatural novels (yay NaNoWriMo) are OC-centric (Chip, my beloved), and have a supporting cast of OCs (Saunders and Agatha, my also beloved). My (unpublished, unfinished) other long-form (and emotionally self-indulgent) fics also have an OC front and center. (Not that the poor bastards have much choice in the matter.)
Being a "fangirl" raised in the Mary Sue era, I of course live in fear of the Mary Sue accusation, but you know what? Fuck it. You have to put some of yourself into your work, right?
10. Top three favourite fic tropes. - Okay, so, I haven't read fanfic in...so long. (The bookworm in me died. I'm waiting on a new worm. But.) Also, I...don't really know what the tropes are. I mean, I don't have the list internalized, and Fanfic Tropes on TVTropes.org isn't helping much.
I remember thoroughly enjoying Crossover fanfics, both writing and reading, because of how fun it was to try and fit the pieces together. Original Flavour was also a fave, for the challenge and the wonder of seeing it well-executed. And Crack fic is, of course, a guilty pleasure. It's so delightful!
But I guess if we're talking about, like, plot-specific, then... Look, all I'm coming up with are the usual tropes of "there was only one bed" or "fake dating" or "coffeeshop au" and frankly I...don't really care for them. (Especially the AUs. Specifically when they're "these characters, but in a coffeeshop. In highschool. If they were cops. If they were rivalling bakers. Like...just write original fic then. But AUs where it's "but they failed" or "but that one lived" or "but they found out" then yes, yes, give me the extrapolation! I love that shit.)
Okay, so fanlore.org also has a list so, here's me picking three: canon divergence au, crossover, hurt/comfort. Honourable mentions: crack, first time, and enemyslash (yiss).
18. First, second, or third person? - I once read a first person fic and liked it, but I'm still shocked about it, so. I can't really get into second person, and even less if they do "y/n" because even after all this time, my first instinct is to read that as a computer prompt for "yes/no". So I prefer to read and write in third person. I do, however, seem to like to write in third-person subjective or limited (which is like writing in first person but the grammar's different, basically).
For example, my NaNoWriMo's are in this, but - because I got tired, and needed the word count - I'll slip in passages in italics from some other character's viewpoint. I have a superlong "this is how I have been coping these past plague years" fic that I haven't published - or finished - which is strictly one third person subjective, and, wow, it's... Sometimes it's claustrophobic. But also an interesting challenge, like, the reader know what the other character means, but our viewpoint doesn't, or I get to play with what they've noticed or not, or how they interpret things... Dunno, it's fun. Challenging, but fun.
20. Do you work on a single project or many at the same time? How does that work for you? - Yeah, no, I'm a one-project kind of person. If it's not a one-shot, in which case I might be able to hit pause on one thing while I work on another, then I am shackled to one project and one project only. If not, well...just ask all those unfinished projects, crying in their corners. Also, I've not particularly rife with inspiration or the energy behind it, so it's not like I've got many options going on at the same time. I just...keep on trucking with whatever I've got going.
I don't know, man. I guess the answer is it doesn't work for me but I keep trying to just keep going.
28. Any writing advice that works for you and you feel like sharing? - My favourite is the "fuck whoever said you can't use the word said" advice. Just use it. Said. It's a fine word. Neutral. Invisible.
My other favourite is "No, you will not remember. Write it down."
33. Give your writing a compliment. - *writes and deletes answers for five minutes* Dialogue good. Exposition good. Words pretty.
37. Do you research before writing or while you write? Is it fun or boring for you? - As I write, mainly because I never know what minor detail my brain will refuse to remember and instist is necessary for some throwaway line or metaphor. It can be frustrating or derailing, but most of the time it's an interesting, fun little break. And there's the plus side of finding out new things I can use. Yay knowledge!
