I don't know how exactly to describe my relationship to Ready Player One (and Two). It's Bad. It's stupid. It's vapid. It's extraordinarily easy to read and 0 thought was put into any of it except "wouldn't this be cool, man I love video games." I don't like it, but it has rooted in my head and will NOT let go. If you detach your brain the Willy Wonka-esque treasure hunt story is kind of fun but it gets derailed so abruptly every time a worldbuilding detail crops up like are you fucking KIDDING me, what do you mean everyone is totally cool with this. No go back to the nuclear war thing I'm still not over that even though I know you are

Ready Player One occupies a fascinating space in my brain. It's bad, but in a specific way that makes me suspect I have more in common with the author than I do with most of his critics.

I feel like Ready Player One's idea of everyone studying the 80's and being nostalgic about a time they did not live through is wasted on that book. For one it indulges wholeheartedly in it through most of the book and only throw a wink and a nudge towards the idea that it might be a bit weird near the end. So like it's not even really supported by the text. But. There's a nugget there. But I believe that it can be made better by bringing in one additional point. Nostalgic for USA's 80s.
I believe a book or movie about a teenager who has never stepped foot in America but has been conditioned by American media which is readily available to be nostalgic about an 80s they never experienced could be quite poignant. Especially if you pick any of the countries that were affected particularly badly by america in the 80s for some sweet dissonance. I'll workshop this a bit
