On this day, 1 November 1963, a rent strike by mostly Black tenants living in slum conditions in Harlem, New York, began. By mid-December the protest had grown to include Puerto Rican residents, and had spread to 58 buildings housing 850 families in the area between Park and 8th Avenue (now Frederick Douglass Boulevard) and 115th and 118th Streets. The city responded in the short-term by reducing rents of many families to $1 per month (down from over $100), as demanded by the protesters, and stepping up building inspections. As in many historical rent strikes, much of the day-to-day organising work growing and maintaining the strike was undertaken by women residents. By January 1964, around 2,000 tenants were withholding rent. But over time, more and more focus by organisers went into court cases, which often dragged on for long periods of time, and ended up ruling in landlords' favour, sapping the energy of the rent strike. The rent strike began to falter, and largely ended by the autumn of 1964. However the action did result in concrete achievements. Many of the buildings where tenants withheld rent were improved somewhat, mitigating some of the worst conditions like water leaks, rat infestations and lack of heat. And New York City was forced to introduce a significant rat eradication programme, employ more housing inspectors, pass new laws legalising rent strikes and improve enforcement against slumlords. my favourite punk records of my late teens / early 20s (released roughly 2010 to 2015)
no particular order, some much better than others
Dawn of Humans - 2010 s/t EP (intense, frightening, deeply weird, and somehow oddly uplifting hardcore) The Love Triangle - Clever Clever (cheery yet cynical 77-79-sounding punk - brilliant lyrics and melodies) Ceremony - Rohnert Park (art school surf-hardcore - their trend-hopping means people are less likely to admit how brilliant this record is) Good Throb - Fuck Off (took a while to fully appreciate; sounds like Gang of Four but funnier and also 300 times angrier) Hank Wood and the Hammerheads - Go Home (60s garage rock played at a hardcore pace with lyrics about fighting and wanting to die) Creem - Discography LP (the thinking man's stompy tough guy hardcore) RAD - Loud and Fast (the most fun record on this list; thrashcore gone silly-style; so funny, so fast, so loud, so rad) Criaturas - Espiritu de Libertad ('burning spirits' hardcore aka d-beat with insane guitar leads) Ajax - 2014 s/t EP (the ultimate d-beat meets stompy hybrid; with smart lyrics to boot) Triage - Power Beat EP (raw metallic d-beat with great songwriting and riffs. this and Ajax are my go-to EPs if I need a quick shot of rage and riffs) Sonic Avenues - Mistakes (poppy garage punk, but with real ambition and experimentation, and deep emotion) Radioactivity - Silent Kill (driving, laser-focused, mechanically precise garage punk, from veterans of the style) Kriegshog - s/t LP (nightmarishly noisy Japanese d-beat; a genuinely scary record; 'Burn' is possibly the best hardcore punk song ever written.) Sheer Mag - first three EPs (the power! the passion! yes, they sound very like Thin Lizzy and the like, but is that such a crime? I'm a stickler for this shit, but this band are punk) Uranium Club - first two releases (sneering garage rock-y post-punk, with absolutely twisted and often jawdroppingly brilliant lyrics) Suburbanite - Suburbanite EP (seriously feral, blindingly fast and disturbingly vitriolic and violent hardcore - right near the top of the pile) Rats Blood - Punks is Mutants (more d-beat with high quality songwriting - the title track is an anthem, and 'Heroin' and 'No More Fukushima' are chilling) Primetime - s/t EP (joyfully amateurish and snarky punk-pop about lady sex (!) among other things) This Routine is Hell - Howl (interdisciplinary hardcore with a passionate beatnik heart) G.L.O.S.S. - both releases (This band had lesser songs, but damn, they really knew how to do an opening track...) Dead Hero - demo (many oi! bands now appreciate the genius of Blitz's 'New Age', perhaps none more so than this Colombian crew)

"Twat," mumbled a welcome voice just loud enough for everybody around to hear.
I turned to see who had said this: the burnout-looking boy across the aisle, slouched and drumming his desk with his fingers. When he saw me looking at him, he raised a surprisingly lively eyebrow, as if to say: can you believe these fucking idiots?
"Did someone have something to say back there?" said Mrs. Spear.
"Like Thoreau gave a toss about roads," said the burnout bov. His accent took me by surprise: foreign, I couldn't place it.
"Thoreau was the first environmentalist," said Mrs. Spear.
"He was also the first vegetarian," said a girl in back.
"Figures," said someone else. "Mr. Crunchy-chewy."
"You're all totally missing my point," the Dragon Ball Z boy said excitedly. "Somebody has to build roads and not just sit in the woods looking at ants and mosquitoes all day. It's called civilization."
My neighbor let out a sharp, contemptuous bark of a laugh. He was pale and thin, not very clean, with lank dark hair falling in his eyes and the unwholesome wanness of a runaway, callused hands and black-circled nails chewed to the nub--not like the shiny-haired, ski-tanned skate rats from my school on the Upper West Side, punks whose dads were CEOs and Park Avenue surgeons, but a kid who might conceivably be sitting on a sidewalk somewhere with a stray dog on a rope.
"Well, to address some of these questions? I'd like for everybody to turn back to page fifteen," Mrs. Spear said. "Where Thoreau is talking about his experiment in living."
"Experiment how?" said Dragon Ball Z. "Why is living in the woods like he does any different from a caveman?"
The dark-haired boy scowled and sank deeper in his seat. He reminded me of the homeless-looking kids who stood around passing cigarettes back and forth on St. Mark's Place, comparing scars, begging for change — same torn-up clothes and scrawny white arms; same black leather bracelets tangled at the wrists. Their multi-layered complexity was a sign I couldn't read, though the general import was clear enough: different tribe, forget about it, I'm way too cool for you, don't even try to talk to me.
Such was my mistaken first impression of the only friend I made when I was in Vegas, and — as it turned out — one of the great friends of my life. His name was Boris. Somehow we found ourselves standing together in the crowd that was waiting for the bus after school that day.
"Hah. Harry Potter," he said, as he looked me over.
"Fuck you," I said listlessly. It was not the first time, in Vegas, I'd heard the Harry Potter comment. My New York clothes — khakis, white oxford shirts, the tortoiseshell glasses which I unfortunately needed to see — made me look like a freak at a school where most people dressed in tank tops and flip flops.
"Where's your broomstick?"
"Left it at Hogwarts," I said. "What about you? Where's your board?"
"Eh?" he said, leaning in to me and cupping his hand behind his ear with an old-mannish, deaf-looking gesture. He was half a head taller than me; along with jungle boots and bizarre old fatigues with the knees busted out, he was wearing a ratted-up black T-shirt with a snowboarding logo.
i actuslly dunno wht this is…

You can apply camping sites at three main camps. 'Twee Rivieren' is Dutch for 'Two Rivers' and, as common history implies, the camp ground is situated at the confluence among the Nossob and Auob waters. THE GLASS CASTLE a memoir Jeannette Walls
I WAS SITTING IN a taxi, wondering if I had overdressed for the evening, when I looked out the window and saw Mom rooting through a Dumpster. It was just after dark. A blustery March wind whipped the steam coming out of the manholes, and people hurried along the sidewalks with their collars turned up. I was stuck in traffic two blocks from the party where I was heading. Mom stood fifteen feet away. She had tied rags around her shoulders to keep out the spring chill and was picking through the trash while her dog, a black-and-white terrier mix, played at her feet. Mom's gestures were all familiar—the way she tilted her head and thrust out her lower lip when studying items of potential value that she'd hoisted out of the Dumpster, the way her eyes widened with childish glee when she found something she liked. Her long hair was streaked with gray, tangled and matted, and her eyes had sunk deep into their sockets, but still she reminded me of the mom she'd been when I was a kid, swan-diving off cliffs and painting in the desert and reading Shakespeare aloud. Her cheekbones were still high and strong, but the skin was parched and ruddy from all those winters and summers exposed to the elements. To the people walking by, she probably looked like any of the thousands of homeless people in New York City. It had been months since I laid eyes on Mom, and when she looked up, I was overcome with panic that she'd see me and call out my name, and that someone on the way to the same party would spot us together and Mom would introduce herself and my secret would be out. I slid down in the seat and asked the driver to turn around and take me home to Park Avenue. The taxi pulled up in front of my building, the doorman held the door for me, and the elevator man took me up to my floor. My husband was working late, as he did most nights, and the apartment was silent except for the click of my heels on the polished wood floor. I was still rattled from seeing Mom, the unexpectedness of coming across her, the PAGE 4 sight of her rooting happily through the Dumpster. I put some Vivaldi on, hoping the music would settle me down

Who freed Flaco? One year later, celebrity owl's escape from Central Park Zoo remains a mystery
Jake Offenhartz for the AP:
Under cover of darkness a year ago Friday, someone breached a waist-high fence and slipped into the Central Park Zoo. Once inside, they cut a hole through a steel mesh cage, freeing a majestic Eurasian eagle-owl named Flaco who had arrived at the zoo as a fledgling 13 years earlier.
Immediately, Flaco fled the park, blinking his big orange eyes at pedestrians and police on Fifth Avenue before flying off into the night.
In the year since his dramatic escape, Flaco has become one of the city's most beloved characters. By day he lounges in Manhattan's courtyards and parks or perches on fire escapes. He spends his nights hooting atop water towers and preying on the city's abundant rats.
To the surprise of many experts, Flaco is thriving in the urban wilds. An apex predator with a nearly 6-foot (2-meter) wingspan, he has called on abilities some feared he hadn't developed during a lifetime in captivity, gamely exploring new neighborhoods and turning up unexpectedly at the windows of New Yorkers.
Free hi—oh, he's already free, keep up the good work

The Timeless Charm of Tuxedos in NYC
New York City, often referred to as the fashion capital of the world, has long been a hub for groundbreaking style, elegance, and innovation. Amidst the ever-evolving fashion landscape of the city, one classic item has firmly held its ground: the tuxedo. Dapper, sophisticated, and timeless, the tuxedo has its roots intertwined with NYC's storied past. Here, we delve into the allure of the tuxedo in the Big Apple and its enduring appeal.
The Origins
The tuxedo's origins trace back to Tuxedo Park, a socially elite enclave about an hour outside of Manhattan. The tale goes that, in 1886, tobacco magnate Pierre Lorillard IV and his son Griswold Lorillard decided to shake things up at the Tuxedo Park Autumn Ball. Instead of the traditional tailcoat, they and a few friends donned shorter jackets without tails - what we now recognize as the tuxedo jacket. The daring move set tongues wagging, but as with all things avant-garde in New York, it soon became the trend.
The NYC Influence
NYC, with its bustling nightlife, Broadway shows, opera galas, and high-profile events, provided the perfect backdrop for the tuxedo to flourish. From the roaring '20s, where tuxedos New York became synonymous with the Jazz Age and speakeasies, to the suave Rat Pack era, the tuxedo was the uniform of choice for the well-dressed man about town.
A Symbol of Rebellion
Interestingly, while the tuxedo started as an act of sartorial rebellion, it quickly became the gold standard for formalwear. Yet, its spirit of revolution never truly disappeared. NYC saw tuxedos paired with sunglasses in the '60s, sans tie in the '80s, and even with sneakers in the early 2000s. Today, celebrities often don tuxedos with unique personal touches at NYC's red-carpet events, proving its versatility and adaptability.
Modern Day Tuxedo in NYC
Today's NYC is a melting pot of cultures, styles, and personalities. Modern designers have taken the tuxedo and given it a contemporary twist, playing with fabrics, cuts, and embellishments. But at its heart, the tuxedo remains a symbol of elegance.
Boutiques in SoHo, tailor shops in Midtown, and high-end stores on Fifth Avenue all offer their interpretations of the classic tuxedo. Whether it's a traditional black-tie affair or a contemporary chic event, NYC's love affair with the tuxedo remains strong.
Conclusion
In a city known for skyscrapers, yellow taxis, and fashion-forward thinkers, the tuxedo stands tall and proud. It is a testament to NYC's ability to honor tradition while always looking towards the future. The next time you find yourself walking the streets of Manhattan, take a moment to appreciate the symphony of styles around you. And remember, amidst the ever-changing trends, the timeless tuxedo remains a constant, just like the indomitable spirit of NYC.

The bus moved at a glacial pace towards Park Avenue and East 93rd Street. Yvonne had thought about taking the subway earlier that morning, but having to walk around a station that smelled of urine and had rats scurrying everywhere didn’t appeal to her. So, she was stuck here and trying to get to school before the bell for homeroom rang.
Apart from the stalled traffic, it really wasn’t so bad. She was listening to some piano covers of European electronic music that she had downloaded online. The music was good, obscure, and somewhat airy. It wasn’t anywhere near the Top Forty stuff that all of her friends were listening or to the avant garde jazz that Dad liked to blast after one of his arguments with Mom – all angles and atonal nonsense that didn’t sound like music at all.
She felt someone take the seat next to her and turned to see a young woman who was roughly her age. “I like your jacket,” Yvonne said taking her earbuds out. “Is it real leather?”

Investing in Indian Government Securities
Tumblr media
Investing in Indian Government Securities: A Safe Haven for Investors
Indian Government Securities (G-Secs) are debt instruments issued by the Government of India to borrow money from the public and institutional investors to finance various projects and meet fiscal requirements. As one of the safest investment options in India, G-Secs offer a low-risk avenue for investors to park their funds while earning a steady income. With the backing of the government, these securities provide stability, liquidity, and attractive returns, making them an essential component of an investor's portfolio. In this article, we will explore the key features of Indian Government Securities, their types, benefits, and how investors can participate in this secure investment opportunity. Types of Indian Government Securities - Treasury Bills (T-Bills): T-Bills are short-term government securities with maturities of 91 days, 182 days, and 364 days. They are issued at a discount to their face value and redeemed at par upon maturity. The difference between the issue price and the face value represents the interest earned by the investor. - Government Dated Securities (G-Secs): G-Secs are medium to long-term debt instruments with maturities ranging from 5 years to 40 years. They pay a fixed interest, known as the coupon, at regular intervals. Investors can buy G-Secs at face value through primary auctions or from the secondary market. - State Development Loans (SDLs): SDLs are issued by individual states in India to meet their funding requirements. Like G-Secs, SDLs also come with fixed coupon payments and various tenures. Investing in Indian Government Securities - Primary Market: Investors can participate in the primary market by bidding for G-Secs and T-Bills in auctions conducted by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on behalf of the Government of India. The RBI announces the auction schedule and invites bids from various entities, including banks, financial institutions, and retail investors. - Stock Exchanges: Indian Government Securities are also traded on stock exchanges such as NSE (National Stock Exchange) and BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange). Investors can buy and sell G-Secs in the secondary market through brokers and depository participants. Benefits of Investing in Indian Government Securities - Safety and Sovereign Guarantee: Indian Government Securities carry the highest level of safety as they are backed by the Government of India, which ensures timely payment of interest and principal. - Low Credit Risk: Unlike corporate bonds, G-Secs are not subject to default risk, making them ideal for risk-averse investors seeking capital preservation. - Fixed Income Stream: Investors in G-Secs receive a fixed interest income at regular intervals, providing a stable income stream. - Liquidity: Government Securities are highly liquid, as they can be bought and sold in the secondary market with ease. This liquidity allows investors to exit their investments whenever needed. - Diversification: Including Government Securities in an investment portfolio enhances diversification and reduces overall portfolio risk, especially during periods of market volatility. - Tax Benefits: Certain categories of Government Securities, such as tax-free bonds, offer tax benefits to investors, making them tax-efficient investment options. - Risk Management: Institutional investors, banks, and mutual funds often invest in Government Securities to manage their asset-liability mismatches and meet regulatory requirements. - Suitable for Different Investment Horizons: With various tenures available, Government Securities cater to investors with different investment horizons and risk profiles. Risks and Considerations While investing in Indian Government Securities is considered safe, investors should be aware of certain risks and factors: - Interest Rate Risk: Government Securities are sensitive to changes in interest rates. When interest rates rise, the value of existing securities may fall in the secondary market. - Reinvestment Risk: In a falling interest rate environment, reinvesting coupon payments or proceeds from maturing securities may yield lower returns. - Inflation Risk: Inflation erodes the purchasing power of fixed income returns. Investors in Government Securities should consider the impact of inflation on their real returns. - Liquidity Risk: While Government Securities are generally liquid, certain securities with longer tenures and lower trading volumes may experience reduced liquidity. - Market Fluctuations: Government Securities are also influenced by market sentiments and economic conditions, which can impact their prices. - Taxation: While Government Securities offer tax benefits in some cases, the tax treatment may vary based on the type and tenure of the security and the investor's tax status. Conclusion Investing in Indian Government Securities offers a safe and stable option for investors to preserve capital and earn fixed income. Stop Requested
The overcast skies, pulling at my memories
Someone stands in front of me
Shoes cleaner than mine
So clean they pull at my mind
I catch a glimpse of a feeling
And then nothing
The commute is different than usual
Going through suburbs with names like country club avenue
I wonder how few people on this bus can afford a country club
I wonder how much damage the golf course is doing to my lungs in a way
The trees are working harder than I am to breathe
There’s too many people to care for
The trees isolated from their community
Slaves to our increasing demands and decreasing gratitude
It gives me some solace to know that the fungi will get what they need eventually
Though the people I love right now are suffering
A few weeks ago I swam in a lake
A Great Lake as it’s told
What kind of Great Lake is as devoid of life as that one was
Where are the gulls threatening your food, the fish pulling at your leg hairs, the algae scaring little kids out of swimming in the depths
Are they hiding? Is it my sunscreen? Is it my car? Is it me?
Another gas station in this suburb
Another parking lot bigger than my apartment building
The rain isn’t coming down but it might as well be
So many houses on so much land, I blame houses with garages and the people buying cars for them
But I know it’s you rat and always has been
I hope you know I don’t think good thoughts about you and care
I hope you change because you’re killing us
The forest fires run rampant but not enough people are saying that maybe we shouldn’t have taken the land in the first place and maybe there’s something we can do about it and if we listened now or soon or ever it might not be too late to prevent suffering
Another gas station
Prices are up again
Do you think people will take the bus or just complain
I don’t blame the people I blame the choices available
I’m thinking of frogs again, I couldn’t tell you why
I don’t see them in my life much
But they’ve become very meaningful to me
I want to bring them the joy they bring me
Highway meets highway
It’s funny that half an hour into the city and half an hour out of the city get me such a different thing
I know that sounds silly
But I feel much farther from my home right now
I’m remembering or forcing myself to again
The drive from suburb to rural is further than suburb to city
I live so close from a suburb and yet I’m nowhere near it
The green space here surprises me, I breathe in but the bus has filtered the air too drastically
I don’t smell anything I recognize
It’s my stop
Golf something
