A few double stars in the northern skies // Dark Rangers

Rasalgethi (α Herculis) is a true multiple star system, a triple star system. The name comes from the Arabic phrase ra'is al-jāthī meaning "head of the kneeler," the "kneeler" being Hercules.

Polaris (α Ursae Minoris) is another true triple star system. The name comes from Neo-Latin stella polaris meaning, unsurprisingly, "polar star."

Mizar (ζ Ursae Majoris) is a quadruple star system, with each pair being seen as a "single" star. The name comes from the Arabic word mi'zar meaning "apron, wrapper, or covering."

Almach (γ Andromedae) is a quadruple star system. The name comes from the Arabic word al-'anāq meaning "the caracal," also known as a desert lynx.

Albireo (β Cygni) is probably a visual binary, meaning the two stars just happen to be close to each other on the sky. The name has an uncertain origin, tracing back to Ptolemy.

Castor (α Geminorum) is a sextuple star system, made up of three pairs of stars. The name has its origin in the Greek myth of the twins Castor and Pollux.

Hercules constellation taken April 21 2021

Sandwiched between Arcturus and Vega, Hercules, the fifth largest constellation, is usually depicted as victoriously vanquishing the dragon Draco, whose trapezoidal head is in the upper left corner here. The streak of an old Soviet satellite (Cosmos 1943) is to the right nearly intersecting the double Princeps, or Delta Boötis, and delineating a border with Corona Borealis. There is a light dodge and vignette on all of Hercules that is centered on the trapezoidal keystone. He is upside down and his head, Rasalgethi, is near the bottom left. The head of Ophiuchus, Rasalhague, is brighter and slightly below and to the left.

Session One - A World in Black

The world is a scary, difficult, hard-to-fathom sort of place. The common people take comfort in the certain inevitability of things. Generally, you could go to bed and know that when you woke up in the morning there would be light. You could almost always bet that Winter would give way to Spring and the cycle would continue on. If you were the sort to take comfort in it, You knew you would also die one day. Imagine the common people’s surprise when one day they awoke to find there was no Sun. Imagine going to bed, again, and finding the next day the same… And then the day after that a repeat of the former two… Needless to say, the common people gave into fear. Who knew what would await them without the certainty of the Sun?

This is the world that a band of adventurers (henceforth known as The Aquatic Life with Bones and Mara ((Or ALBM)) ) have stepped forth into to solve the riddle of the Lightless Sun. Mara, the sheltered Bride of Sol Victorious; Pao-fu, the beached viperfish; and Maraine, the desperately competent. Their reasons are varied and their solutions uncertain. Wit and desperation are their guides, both in uneven measures. The fate of the world rests on their shoulders, but they had no idea where to start.

It was with this in mind that they found themselves in the lakeside town of Grynworth on their own accords. In The Tavern; named in fact the Tavern on the account that this is the sort of small town that there was no such thing as “Competitive Marketing”; the common people and ALBM took heart in the certainties of pub fare. Laughter, music, lighthearted banter and, of course, light. Blazing light. An Actual, Factual Fire.

With a swift and sharp crack and the arrival of Tar-covered goblins The Tavern and the town went up in flames. Chaos ensued. The certainty of death was made entirely too certain for the common people as ALBM escaped into the street. Quickly did they learn of the perils of this lightless world and its myriad forms of insanity all at once. It was as if Fate (hereby named Keith) itself was attempting to garner their attention to the cancer it was fending off, only to send literally everything that could possibly be wrong at them all at once. Needless to say, Keith did not help. First on their Concern List was this strange Tar. This is what they learned: The Tar was flammable, painful, and parasitic in a way. They watched a horse trot into a lake to drown itself, and multiple goblins hurled themselves at the heroes in a pained frenzy to end their own lives. To truly put a soured cherry on top, an enraged,Tar-riddled bugbear smashed through a house and did battle with the heroes - only to be reduced to ash and bone. Whenever the Tar would touch one of the heroes, it sloughed off of them ineffectively.

Secondly was the arrival of a very jolly Tiefling with an eye for religious symbolism. The jolly tiefling watched them do battle, amused, and when Pao’fu addressed him he seemed surprised and delighted by this turn of events! So much so he chose that time to stab Pao’fu in the back as she went after “Her Horse” (Why yes, that would be the same horse that trotted into the lake to drown itself) . It was fortunate for Pao’fu, and doubly unfortunate for the stranger that Mara noticed the sign of Sol Victorious on him. She honestly just meant to give him a stern talking to ...and instead lashed a wicked bout of witchbolt that wounded and caused the Tiefling to retreat into the woods.

Maraine was not nearly so infuriated as his awkward cohorts and managed to stabilize Pao’fu so she wasn’t leaking merblood on everything. They had a multitude of paths to follow, but in the end it was Mara’s determination to follow the Tiefling that dragged the unfortunates on the path through the Forest and back towards her home of Olsberg.

They never caught up with the tiefling, but they did find a curious wanted poster for an elven woman - the Third Concern if you’re still keeping track.

Their uncomfortable silence down the road was punctuated by the screams, moans, and rattles of the endless night. They didn’t talk to each other. It was doubtful they even really looked at each other really until they arrived at the Abbey of Sol Victorious. And there they found even more hellish mayhem. Sacrilegious seven-pointed stars were painted upon the Abbey as it was reduced effectively to charred stones. Inside they found a played out rendition of The School of Athens with a litany of torture devices, blood, and dead people. A lot of dead people. Understandably as this was Mara’s only home she took it...poorly and fainted before the image of the Victory Bettine, Glory Be Her Name and Where Are Her Eyes, pierced inside an iron maiden.

Maraine, now quite clearly the even-tempered one in the group, managed to direct them to what remained of the abandoned Olsberg to find letters and notes from the previous civilians talking about an invading army from Rasalgethi (The Fourth Concern). They had fled to the capital of Algenubi for safe harbor, as indeed most of the countryside had.

The Fifth and, for the time being, final Concern came in the form of a walking, talking, cheery skeleton names Charles. Last time most folks checked, skeletons really didn’t do that. He had a bunch of lovingly hand-made cards and told the heroes that if they found any living (and he stressed the point of living) Necromancers, they could kidnap and give them to the Lady of Bones (yes they are aware it is not an imaginative name) for the price of a thousand gold per Necromancer.

Keith (or Fate) was truly a cruel mistress to give our heroes such divergent and colorful paths to follow. Who knew where the true solution lay? They had a hard choice to make.

Another headcanon post: 

Unukalhai is a top.  No idea about his sexuality though!  He's never explored it.  Just suddenly one day, he was like, yes, I do think Ishura should hold my hand.  Maybe more. 

 Azmidi is a lesbian, is that surprising? No.  She's also a switch. 

 Rasalgethi is... a difficult case, but they're definitely a bottom.  They're probably pan though. 

Toliman is bi and a switch and surprisingly, not the least bit promiscuous.

Suhail doesn't give a fuck but is gay.  Tbh if anyone gets him into bed they're gonna have to deal with him being a pillow princess and passing out every 10 seconds. 

 Ankaa just isn't relevant here tbh, she doesn't know?  It's going to be trial and error for the rest of her life.

I was once asked who the least shippable of my characters are.   I'd say they're all pretty fuckin horrible prospects.

The only reason Unukalhai isn't unbearably over the top with Ishura is because that's his teacher and he's not that kind of stupid.  But that's a thing in and of itself, he's pretty smitten with Ishura bc he doesn't do attachments well in the sense that he's completely fucking oblivious to any emotion that isn't related to either being satisfied with himself or working hard until he is.  Friend is a synonym for someone who isn't trying to kill him. 

 Azmidi can't be trusted tbh she'll just use you and leave.  Why would you want that?  No one wants that.  Buy her food for a while, some other gifts, bail her out of cells when she gets in fights, but if you get too comfortable with her, she'll just skip out. 

 Rasalgethi is like... the sort who will not do friends.  They're very sweet but no one is allowed close, at all.  They're convinced it'll only lead to people getting hurt.  In the sense that isn't strictly sleepwalking after ego with a knife.  They will go to extraordinary lengths to not let anyone in. 

 Toliman isn't so bad, but you'll have to share his time with literally every person without an income.  And you'll be friendzoned hardcore.  It's a lot of work to catch his attention.  Probably not worth it.  He smells bad. 

 Suhail just doesn't take people seriously?  He hurts a lot of feelings because he's too stupid and drowsy to think about his words before they come out.  He's kind of an asshole.  Not on purpose but he's dumb, gay, and oblivious.  He plays really well though, so if you like music and getting put down...

 Ankaa literally has no personality.  Are you into that?
