"HEAVY SENTENCES FOR STRONG ARM MEN," Cobalt Daily Nugget. October 22, 1912. Page 6. --- NORTH BAY, Oct. 21 - Two ex-convicts named John Hergin and H. Blanchard, were sentenced to five years in Kingston Penitentiary by Magistrate Brodie, at Sudbury, for highway robbery, the victim being an elderly Swede who was decoyed to a lonely place in the C.P.R. yards at Sudbury where he was beaten and robbed of eighty-one dollars. Both had just finished prison terms within the week. [Both men had been released from local jails. Bergin was 30, a fireman (i.e. shoveled coal into a boiler), and an Irish immigrant with many tattoos - a heart cross anchor motif, a dove, a horsehead on his left forearm, a crucifix on his right, and a shamrock, closed hands, heart, and on his outside right arm. He had a U.S. flag on his hand. He was convict #F-487 at Kingston Penitentiary and mostly worked at the stone pile and excavation at the prison until promoted to the engineers. He was reported once, in May 1914, and given three days off his good time. He was released in early 1917. Blanchard was 38, from Quebec, a 'labourer,' and likewise had tattoos - clasped hands on his forearm. He was convict #F-488 at the penitentiary, and worked in the quarry. He was never reported, and released in late 1916.]

Edward scolded the twins severely, but told Gordon it served him right. Gordon was furious.
I don't think we, as a fandom, have grappled enough with the fact that these are the first two sentences of "Edward's Exploit" (RWS).

"Conductor handing engineer copy of train orders before a Chicago and North Western freight pulls out for Clinton, Iowa. Since the track between those points is under automatic train control, the engineer hands the conductor the key to the automatic train control lock of the engine. The conductor will keep the key in the caboose until the train arrives at its destination." Photographed January 1943 in Chicago by Jack Delano for the Office of War Information.

there’s so many writing choices in this film that i could gripe about but i can’t deny the way the end scenes have me chewing dry wall. we’ve just spent the entire film seeing alex paint himself as the victim in all of this, a hapless bystander swept into the insanity of nigel’s world and having to pay the price for it. there’s little hints here and there that maybe there’s more to the story - e.g. nigel’s comment about alex and susan (to which alex offers immediate refutation) - but there’s never any real and clear indication. until the end. until we get that 9 month time skip and we see sally pulling up to the cemetery. until we learn that susan’s grave has been dug up and the skull stolen. and then the train scene my god, the reality sets in that alex has been playing them this entire time, that he’s become the very thing nigel always wanted him to be. the ending to this film is both the end of alex’s story and the beginning of jack’s.
#i'm hitting a slump lately and motivation is low so have the incoherent ramblings of a mildly sleep deprived lunatic#but i always have the end of this movie on my mind#especially because i'm obsessed with it all from the pov of forbes sr. of all things?? imagine being alex's dad#your son is suspected of the murder of both susan and nigel#and then you find out he's basically been tormented by the very kid he tried to WARN you about right from the start#but you didn't take it seriously and chalked it up to his usually dramatic antics and need to act out for attention#but then it turns out that kid was not only responsible for the murder of his own parents and 2 other students#but may very well have almost killed alex that night at the railway yard#so you take him home and you try to get things back to the closest approximation of normality that you possibly can#but you've never been particularly close to your son. you struggled to form a connection with him before#and you're certainly not any better at it now after everything that's happened#so you give him space and you tell yourself that it will be alright#and then 1 day. 9 months after. you wake to find your son is gone. packed up and left#not only that. but you find out the police suspect he was lying this entire time and the grave dug up by him#what do you do? do you look for him? do you believe the police - believe your own child capable of any of the things they describe???#anyway i just have a lot of thoughts about alex's dad post-film . clearly#like minds#alex forbes#i love that john colbie gets a name but alex's dad is 'headmaster'

“Can’t Locate Trio Thought As Nazis,” Toronto Star. April 22, 1941. Page 1. --- Check All Trains and Yards After Prisoners’ Escape ---- Police and railroad investigators could find no trace of the reported two or three men who were seen to jump into an open box-car of a C.N.R. Mimico-bound freight train at the Bathurst St. yards yesterday.
Railway police checked all suspicious characters in their yards and on trains since the escape of 28 Germans from a northern internment camp. The men were seen later to get off the train at the east-end limits of the Mimico yards and while Mimico and New Toronto police in cars searched the area no suspicious persons were located.

Part 1: A night in the life of a train driver As some of you may know, I've been working as a train driver for several months now. It’s a job I enjoy immensely - I get to coast a 5-million euro machine through gorgeous countryside and even get paid to do it. I've been taking pictures along the way; not just of the views but the trains too because - like a proud parent - I think they’re stinkin’ cute. I’ve been wanting to share a couple of pics, just to give a little peek into my job :) So to start with, here’s some of my favourite “after hours” photos. Because while I prefer driving during the day, nothing can beat the atmosphere of a railway yard at night with sounds of clanking wheels and lights that shine like stars.
Click on the photos for their titles and short descriptions! And let me know if you enjoy seeing things like this, and if the format works. At first I wanted to add the photo descriptions to the text but I fear the posts would become too long.

Shunting yard (digging through the archive)
Digging through the archive, here's a shunting yard, marshalling yard, or classification yard, on the southern outskirts of the city. Although it wasn't that late, dusk was already slowly setting in. January 2020, pre-pandemic era.
I like how the telephoto lens compressed the perspective, and made all those widely spaced poles look like they're right next to one another. A lot of horizontal and vertical lines, an ordered clutter.
Taken with Panasonic GX7 digital mirrorless camera, and adapter Sigma 135–‍400mm F4.5–‍5.6 APO DG ultra-telephoto lens, via off-brand FourThirds-microFourThirds adapter.
