Third Place Part 2/2
“Everything will be fine. We’ll be fine.”
Rei and Rai
This is such an interesting ship to me. (also think it’s funny saying that the Chen siblings have the same taste in men: Rei) I have several thoughts and feeling about these two. Mostly angst. Some unrequited. But that’s a post for another day.

Rei and Rai’s Childhood
Tumblr media
Thinking about it, even though we see the White Tigers returning from Rei’s perspective (the seemingly-unreasonable accusation of betrayal, of letting down your friends & home community, when a normal kid like Rei would obviously cave under the pressure), Rai/Lee’s perspective is pretty depressing too. It’s one I really empathize with! In all honesty, it’s easy to see how they both likely felt trapped in a position of pressure from adults + elders that no kid should be put through. They both reacted in opposite ways, however — with Rei running away and Rai backing down to pick up the work of a replacement role in Rei’s place.
Both come from the same enclosed place that hadn’t previously let its members wander out to better understand the outside world. Understandably, long-established communities like those can be both close-knit and insular. And if you’re a member, taking upon something new could be seen as a sign of betrayal. Which was essentially Rei’s “betrayal.”
Both Rei and Rai had heavy pressures put on them — more than a normal kid should’ve — due to circumstances they couldn’t control. Rei simply happened to be the “golden child” of the situation. IE, the one elevated and treated better, in the expectations that he gives back just as much if not more. While Rai was scraped aside knowing he’d forever be viewed as secondary to someone he was raised alongside with. So in Rai’s eyes, it adds twofold as a hurt when you realize Rai’s grandfather assigned Rei the white tiger blade, only for Rei to dip out with that exact blade (which again, isn’t completely unreasonable in many forms but we’re discussing how it was taken by Rai). So in Rai’s view, that was seen as a massive ‘Why are you doing this??!?!!’ because it was something he desired all along — for his family’s approval, the white tiger blade, and the community’s recognition of his hard work.
We pretty much know what happens next: Rei making up with Mao, defeating Lee/Rai in battle (proving the validity of his viewpoint in the shonen way of things), and Rai eventually giving an admission of defeat. Things are technically supposed to be okay right? But in many ways, I was thinking in my watch-through that that must’ve been massively painful in Rai’s standpoint.
Imagine being raised with someone who’s essentially a sibling, and told by your entire family that they’re the favorite, the one who’ll succeed, the one whose efforts without even trying are much better than anything you’ll ever do. Essentially, the better version of you.
It would hurt right?
I guess this is why I thought it was an unfortunate thing that Rai/Lee had to be in the position he was put. Rei was essentially always destined to be better — at beyblading, at earning his grandfather’s respect, at leading the village they had come from. But the person in 2nd place, the bearer of the burden afterwards, would of course feel terrible.
Of course, I did root for Rei in their 1st season battle because I didn’t think it was entirely fair of his former teammates to be so hard on him. Especially when they + their community hadn’t previously made attempts to reach out to the outside world as he had and began to pass down the same pressures their elders did onto Rei — blaming him for shirking a burdensome responsibility as they resented being left behind the brunt (in that position, it’s honestly hard to blame any of the kids for a failing of their elders & society). So for both the plot advancing so the Bladebreakers could beat the tournament AND for Rei to show the White Tigers that the things he went to seek out in the outside world were both valid & worthy, Rai had to lose. But again, it was still painful to watch.
Just to add —
One of the unfortunate things about G-Rev has got to be how most of the White Tigers got scraped aside. Especially competent bladers like both Rai and Mao. And in Rai’s case, Rei essentially swoops back in and takes the leader position like nothing has happened & the treatment of Rai himself wasn’t great. I think Rei as a character is pretty cool, but not necessarily the situation (which to be fair he couldn’t entirely help, but the G-Revolution situation with the White Tigers team was quite bad; I felt it was also sad for Max’s team who didn’t treat Max well a great chunk of the time too ;~;).
Again though, it’s likely a lot of characters had to be massively sidelined for the story (new antagonists, rising stakes, main Bladebreakers having to be the winning characters for plot progression). And there’s only so much you can elaborate on secondary characters for a plot-oriented shonen to carry on. But if you liked these characters and wanted to see them in a better position, it sure is a bit sad.

Ep 19 of G-Revs is kind of the funniest and one of my faves upon rewatch.
But the added Max and Rick conflict is quite nice and it handles multiple characters through the episode. For example, Rei’s always willing to diffuse conflict, while Max’s is on the inverse, and he’s ready to start conflict with Rick to have him get along, and it’s two different interactions specifically with Rick.
Rai winning was also a nice touch. I wasn’t really paying attention but I guess it’s a call back to the previous episode when he was like a bit insecure about his blading abilities.
Mao’s also here out for blood. Just EVERYONE FIGHT EACH OTHER. Make her beyblade already.
Also the bonus at the end, we roast Max for his weird mayo thing going on. Ick. Bully him harder.
