The last remaining hours of Kureha Koizumi’s birthday was drawing near, and although Kureha wanted nothing more than to collapse on her bed, the ringing of the front doorbell was the intervention that wouldn’t allow Kureha to do so.

With a low groan, Kureha dragged herself to the door and peered through the peephole.

Well, whoever was just there was no longer around.

She opened the door fully and turned her head in all directions, only to find a palm-sized package plopped on the floor with an envelope taped to it.

Too tired to think it over, she picked them up and brought them inside.

As she dragged herself back to her room, she undid the ribbon from the package and peered inside the little box.

Inside was a knit… stuffed animal? In the shape of a black cat head and was no bigger than the size of her palm.

Kureha tore into the envelope, finding a letter addressed to her. But rather than being handwritten, it was entirely printed out.

“A Happiest of Birthdays and Holidays, My Dear.

Enjoy this little present that was handcrafted by every member of R.I.P Märchen. Miku Shirazuki dried out her own lavender petals for calming effects, Reiaki Suzubayashi designed the pouches herself. And I, Her Majesty, The Queen Card, sewed this together with my own two hands.

Use this hand warmer to help warm you up during these cold times. Please, do stop by our division sometime. There is quite a lot to offer over here. In the meantime, do be well, my subject.

“Cute…” Kureha mumbled as she gently squeezed the small cat plush in her hands, she could faintly smell the lavender inside it and a wave of clam washed over her, how nice of one of the Minato teams to gift her something this nice. Kazu hopped up on the bed and started to sniff the cat head plush, letting out a soft “Mrrow?” Kureha smiled and scratched behind his ears and picked him up to snuggle with him (and the plush) on her bed, falling asleep only minutes later.

The place was filled with guests— estimated to be close to around five hundred people, all dressed in their absolute finest and completely masking over the waiters carrying trays of hors d’œvres or beverages. Despite the mass of people, the venue was far from compact or cramped.

Round tables with gorgeous tablecloths that draped over, several artwork displayed on the light walls, and twinkling green lights decorated the columns and greenery. Classical music was playing, setting the mood for the day that would go on until the evening.

In the heart of the venue was a round table that seated the three stars of the night: Tomi Chōten, Karada Kessaku, and Luis Kōkyū. Nothing but the best for the three men who would soon be representing the city of Aoyama in the upcoming Division Rap Battle, celebrating their third year together as a team.

The three were chatting on their own while a waiter served them chutes of champagne. Paying the waiter no mind, they each picked up their chutes and clinked them together, the light chime a pleasant sound amidst the many chatters throughout the gala hall. Wasting no time, they each sipped from their glasses, paying little attention to the taste of the beverage.

Really and truly.

Nothing but the best.

"Ms. Queen Card, herself. *sighs* My wife doesn't particularly care for her much. And I can't say that I'm much of a fan of herself, myself. I won't deny that she draws quite a crowd wherever she goes, but some of her tricks... they're a bit on the dangerous side, and I'd rather avoid a lawsuit if I can help it. I'll admit, I think banning her from Gypsy's Palace may have been a little extreme, but better safe than sorry."

Reiaki Suzubayashi

"Reiaki? I've met her once or twice, though I don't know her fully well. I know she's usually the one who does the make-up for some of the artists that I DJ or produce for. She's even given me a touchup now and then, though it's unnecessary since I almost always wear a mask when I DJ. But she does do good work. I heard she was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Special Visual Effects. Here's hoping she wins."

Miku Shirazuki

"Miku. It's good to see her again. If you're wondering how I know her, I helped to produce some of the songs she was known for. I even DJ'd a couple of her live shows. I was as shocked as everyone when I heard that she was quitting the entertainment business. I wanted to know more, but I knew she had her reasons. I often see her around Minato, and I'm glad she's doing better. She doesn't show up to nightclubs often, not that I blame her. Even if she isn't an idol anymore, there are still a lot of fans out there. I hope she's taking care of herself."

R.I.P Märchen

"One of the two, well, three, counting us, teams of Minato. Though they haven't had battles, that doesn't take away from their fame and dangerousness. I'm hoping that we'll be fully prepared when we face them. Especially of Queen Card. Nothing against Reiaki and Miku, but if there's any threat on this team, she's it."

"I know this woman. Not personally, of course, but I've seen her do a couple of shows over at Eagle's Nest in Okinawa and a few bars and theatres across Japan. Appareance-wise, she reminds me of the blind fortune teller from Ōta, but personality-wise, I get the same feeling from her that I get from that spider woman that's on Sumire's team from Shinagawa. Like all she sees us as nothing more than pawns in whatever little plan she's got cooking in that dome she calls a head."

"Well, let me state now: I really don't know nor do I care whatever it is you've got rolling around in your head. So long as they don't involve me, my city or my family, you can do whatever you want."

"Reiaki-chan? Ha, yeah, I know her. She was something of an inspiration to some of the girls during my Bōsōzoku days. Is it weird to say that I see a lot of myself inside of her? We were both just two girls who wanted to do whatever the hell we wanted until reality woke us up. Still, I don't regret those days. I kinda miss them, to be honest. But anyway, yeah, Reiaki is a cool chick. I see her name often listed on some horror films I watch. I didn't know she was into the movie industry. Good on her."

"Some of the girls in my gang were big fans of Miku's songs. I've heard some of them, but... well, when you've heard one idol sing, you've heard them all. Nothing against her, of course. But 86 and whatever other bands Sumire's listening to at the time are more my speed. We both attend school together, but I don't think we have any classes together. She's going into astrology, studying the stars and what-not. Me, I just want to hurry up and be done with it."

"So, this is the other Minato team that's everyone been talking about, huh? Between them and that 'Oculus' group, it's going to be interesting to see who's going to end up running the division. I'd like to say I'm rooting for these guys (mainly cause of Reiaki), but that Oculus group has got "Bloody Mary" in the mix, so... yeah, I think I'm putting my money on them, even if they are being led by a deranged scientist."

"Other than that, I've nothing against this team. But I meant what I said about your plans, Ms. Stage Magician. Whatever schemes you're cooking, leave Ueno out of it, got it?"

"Ugh, I couldn't forget this wretched woman, even if I tried. That mask and arrogance of hers is paramount to her character. It's a shame she wasn't born with a modicum of wealth and dignity. She'd have been greatly welcomed into our upper class society. As stated, she had the look, the personality, pretty much everything one could find amongst the nobility. Even knowing that she views most people as mere pawns would have been overlooked. We all look at each other the same way, believe it or not."

"But, as stated, she lacks the necessary characteristics to be associated with the rich. And besides, she seems to have a intense disliking for us. More's the pity for her, I suppose."

Reiaki Suzubayashi

"Ugh, Reiaki-chan. Hard to believe the two of us have actually known one another since childhood. However, if you think that makes the two of us good friends, or even acquaintances, then I'm afraid you're sorely mistaken. She had a better relationship with my younger brother than me. No surprise since she only attended soirees or parties that her parents forced her to attend."

"When we both reached high school, she was no longer the little girl that she used to be. Now, she was another peasant or peon associating herself with the wrong crowd, getting involved in silly little fights, etc. She reminded me much of that pink-haired ruffian from Ueno. Ha, I suppose it's no surprise that they seem to be good acquaintances. Ugh, does no one care for appearances anymore?"

"Who is she again...? Miku Shirazuki? ...Ah, yes. Now I remember. She was, at one point in time, a popular idol that many teenage girls wanted to be, and teenage boys wanted to be with. Kunio may, or may not have, been a fan of her. He showed me a couple of her songs, but they weren't my cup of tea. I later learned an incident caused her to quit performing. My parents and I didn't care enough to find out what it was, so it meant little to us. Kunio was visibly upset, however." Tomi sighs.

"I sometimes envy my brother's ability to understand the peasantry. ...Sometimes."

R.I.P Märchen

"One of the earlier Minato teams to make an appearance, if I'm not mistaken. I believe they are the second team after that team with the ex-scientist to claim dominion over the entire city. I suspect the two teams will have to face each other sooner or later. And when they do, we (the JST) will be waiting for them. After all, only one team can claim to hold of Minato in their grasp. ...And rest assured, I will make sure that it is the JST."

"'Queen Card?' I've heard of her, I think. She was part of that Beauty Pageant along with Makina-chan from Akihabara, correct? ...I'll admit, I didn't watch all of that show (beauty pageants don't hold my interest). But... I think she was the main one that caught my eye in the contest. The reason... I feel that her primary goal wasn't too win the contest, but rather, to observe. I don't know why, but... I get a strange feeling from her..."

"'Strange feeling?' That's putting it lightly. This witch can hide behind her so-called "showmanship" all she wants. I know that she's up to something. I don't care what it is, but if she knows what's good for her, she'll keep any of her plans away from me and my family! If not, I'll show her a real magic trick: I'll make her disappear... forever!"

"This might come as a surprise, but I've never really been all that big on horror movies. Not because they scare me, but... they're so unbelievable. I mean, if you've seen the kind of stuff that happens in those movies, most of the people would be dead within the first few seconds. And I should know considering I'm not... you know, 'human'. But anyway, Yorii tells me that this woman used to star in horror films, but now makes a living doing make-up for either the scenes in the movie, or the stars. ...I wonder what she would think if she met an actual vampyr?"

"Like Reiaki-san, Yorii could tell you more about this woman too. He says that she used to be a 'pop idol', whatever that is. He says it was a singer, so... like him, I guess. But that raises the question: if she's not an 'idol' anymore, what is doing with her time? ...Oh well, it's none of my business."

R.I.P Märchen

"Their group name translates to 'fairy tales', if I'm not mistaken. I've never been a fan of those. My life seems to be something out of fairy tale, but unfortunately, it's not. This is real, and I'm a real living-breathing... creature that has to "feed" on other living creatures just to survive. So... forgive me for saying this, but fairy tales and such, they've no place in my world or the real one. You best wake up soon."

"Queen... Card?" Keiko takes another look at the photo of the masked woman. "...Oh yeah. I think I recognize her. She's not seen a lot here in Akihabara, but when she comes, she attracts a huge following. I know this may seem a bit hypocritical of me, but I personally don't see what's so special about magic, especially when it's not real. I mean, I draw magical boys and girls as a hobby, but that more's to do with 'fantasy'. Her 'magic' is just misdirection and smoke and mirrors. ...But I suppose she must be good at what she does to be so famous. If I go see her though, it's more out of curiosity than actual interest or fascination."

Reiaki Suzubayashi

"'Suzubayashi...?'" Keiko repeats the last name as if remember something. "...Ah! I remember her. I think Criss mentioned that she did some work on one of her favorite sci-fi movies. I forget the name, but I did recall seeing her name at the end credits of it, though. I'm surprised we haven't work together before. But then again, I do manga work, and only as a hobby. What she does is a full-time thing. Still, I guess it's no surprise that she's so popular on social media. I'll have to remember her if I decide to make a live-action version of 'Red of the Ambitious'."

Miku Shirazuki

"...Miku Shirazuki?! She's joining the D.R.B.?! ...Oh my God. I can't believe it. Did you all know that I was a huge fan of her back when I was in high school? I'd heard of her before then, but I didn't start actually listening to her until my Freshman year! I'd heard of some of the other students talking about her, and, at first, I didn't see what the hype about her was. But when I actually listened to her, well... needless to say, I was hooked! I think I downloaded and listened to all her songs in one night!" Keiko smiles, remembering the memory. However, she she frowns. "However, when I heard that she was leaving the music world, I was so upset. I wanted to know why, but I knew she had her reasons. But still, the day I heard she had quit performing... that was possibly the... second saddest day of my life. ...What was my first? ...I'd rather not talk about it..."

"Seeing as this time is stationed in Minato, where... that woman is also stationed, I'm guessing that this was the team that Otome-sama had initially sent to represent Minato. ...At least that was the case until that woman's team interfered, messing everything up. Seeing as only one team can represent a division, I figure its only a matter of time until the both of them collide. ...I'll say this: that woman should hope this defeats them first. Because if not, they'll have to deal with us. And should it come to that, I will show absolutely no mercy."

“I have some packages for…“ the delivery man paused to read over his receipts. “Rashaad Young?”

Confused, as Rashaad had thought his birthday has already ended, took the smaller packages inside anyway while the delivery man wheeled in the largest box inside the bar.

Rashaad picked up the smallest package first, which was hardly as long as his own forearm. Carefully tearing away the twine that held the package together, he found a small card nestling atop the gifts inside.

Casting aside the card, Rashaad found four small glass vials, containing syrups in various colors and each labeled with black, delicate yet intricate penmanship. One vial was labeled “chamomile syrup,” another as “rose syrup,” “hibiscus syrup,” and “elderflower syrup.”

Rashaad picked up the card again and quickly read over it.

“To: Rashaad Young

Hey, Happy Birthday. As thanks for looking after my teammate and leader, I took a few days to whip up these syrups with my own flowers. Use them however you want with your drinks. Enjoy your birthday.

From,

Miku Shirazuki”

He moved to the second largest. Inside the box was an eagle statue made of stone and gold.

Removing the statue from its box, he found a card placed at the bottom. There was no card, but rather, a simple greeting.

“Happy Birthday, my dude! Enjoy all the presents and have a Happy Birthday! These presents probably didn’t arrive on time for your birthday, but hey! It’s your birthday week, right? Have a good one!

— Reiaki”

Then that left the final present, which was even taller than him.

Attached to the screen was a card, its contents all printed, rather than handwritten.

“Greetings,

I hear it is your birthday today. A wondrous Happy Birthday to you, my dear.

You’ve done well in providing your services for my staff and I. My stage presence alone should be enough of a ‘thank you.’ However, it is only right that I be even more generous and bestow something gracious for you. It is a jukebox, however, the sound system is far more advanced and I constructed it using modern technology. You’ll find an instruction manual on the back of this card. Do be careful and take care to enjoy your special week to the fullest, my subject.

Approximately two hours had passed since gifts from the Minato team had arrived. During that time, Rashaad had: organized the bottles Miku had sent him, found a good place to plant the eagle head from Reiaki on the roof of his bar, and had managed to, somehow or other, set up his brand new jukebox. Truthfully, he was a little skeptical to replace the old one, especially since it still worked. Truthfully, it was a gift from his old master and he didn't feel like just living it in his storage room to collect dust. So, with some help from Ace, he managed to lug it upstairs to his room, where Rashaad could enjoy it all for himself.

Taking a look around his bar, Rashaad could barely recognize it due to how much stuff had been given to him the past few days for his birthday. New silverware, new scented candles, new glasses, a new pool table, which, despite being only a day or so old, was already well-used, some new records, and now a new jukebox. It's moments like these that made Rashaad really happy he was a bar owner. How else could he meet such fascinating people?

O…kay… so it’s been three days since Anika’s birthday, but it’s time to (actually) wrap up the birthday event!! It’s great to know that Anika is well-liked (especially because both her visual card and her short story took way longer to prepare than the previous birthday event…), so thank you kindly.

There won’t be any birthdays for the month of December. However! The very first drama tracks for both Pixel Syndicate and R.I.P Märchen are being released in December! Very excited to get all six girls’ stories out there, so stay tuned for those!

Day in the life: R.I.P Märchen’s Workplaces

Her nighttime job, and what she is most known for, is being a stage magician, her specialty being in mentalism and mixing in illusionism. She mainly performs in big-name theatres or luxury hotels, the one exception being “Eagle’s Nest” over in Okinawa. On days where she is filming for her famed television show, “The Kingdom of True Deception,” she is called out of work to prepare the theatre for her live performance.

When Her Majesty is not filming for her television show, she is spending all her days on a case. She is out and about or she is holed up in her forensics lab with her staff. She is always looking for the biggest and most grand of murder cases and is set on bringing them to light. Shall we see what she is like on the job?

Being a special effects artist is an incredibly time-consuming job and requires quite a bit of traveling. Even if Reiaki is mainly based in Japan and Hollywood, rarely will you ever find Reiaki in one spot. If she isn’t traveling to various parts of Japan or to Hollywood, she is in the comfort of a little studio that she rents, filming herself turning into grotesque monsters through the power of makeup. All in the name of content.

Well, we all know she’s an astronomy student in university and that’s no fun, soooooo…

Life as an idol, however, was truly never ending to her. Even when she’s off the clock, there is still quite a bit of “work” to tackle on when outside of HQ. Let’s take a look at the behind the scenes of her time as an idol, shall we? More specifically, let’s see what life was like when she was constantly on tour!

And so, before we move on to the next round, please give a warm welcome to our next music performer! For her first time back on stage since retirement, please welcome Miku Shirazuki!

Miku wrapped her hands around the handle of the microphone, gripping it tightly.

This really does feel nostalgic…

She sucked in a deep breath and smiled warmly, her eyes twinkling under the bright lights of the stage.

“Good evening, everybody!!!” Miku yelled excitedly into her microphone.

The audience erupted into a sea of cheers.

Miku exhaled loudly and placed a hand over her heart. “This is Miku Shirazuki and I’m here representing Minato Division! Thank you for having me— it is an absolute honor to be a part of the first ever nation-wide Valentine’s Day Pageant.” She extended her arm out in front of her, almost reaching for the audience.

“And I would just like to thank all of you for such a warm welcome back for my first performance since my retirement. And—”

She was interrupted by the wild cheers from the audience.

“Ahahaha… And… while I won’t be making a return to the world of idols and entertainment, I would like to have one last performance and properly say ‘goodbye’ to all of you when I couldn’t before. I’ve left the idol world behind but you will all still see me around for the Division Rap Battle. But until then, this is my final stage as the young idol you once knew.”

“So! This song is for all of you. And if you are familiar with this song, I would like to invite you all to sing along with me for my goodbye stage. This is for you guys. Play music!”

Miku’s voice cracked and a single tear steamed down her cheek as the final note faded into silence.

Her ears rang, taking in the loud cheers and applause directed to her.

Her fingers trembled against her microphone and she collapsed onto her knees, burying her face in her hands.

“Thank you…” Miku whispered. “Thank you, everyone…. And I’m so sorry I gave up on you…”

Night had long since fallen on the division of Minato. Miku Shirazuki was currently in her home relaxing on her birthday. When all of a sudden she heard a knock on her door. Rising from her position, Miku opened the door only to find a package addressed to her at her doorstep. Picking it up, Miku brought it inside and began to open it.

Inside the gift were 2 gifts. The first was a set of black and silver tarot cards that shined when Miku moved them around. The second gift was a set of candles shaped like black & white raven skulls. Several symbols associated with the occult were carved into them as well. Seeing a note on the bottom of the box, Miku picked it up and began to read.

Happy Birthday. I know we haven’t seen each other much since we’ve both retired from the entertainment scene, but I wanted to get you something for your birthday, so I hope you enjoy them.

A whole new tarot deck… Miku thought as she examined the designs. She ran her fingers over the print of the cards.

I… don’t know if this deck speaks to me… but I feel like I can sense Shiba-san’s aura through these cards… it’s incredible…

It was only a few hours until the end of Miku Shirazuki’s birthday and currently the birthday girl in question was busy going through the various gifts she had gotten throughout the day before finally getting to the medium sized present wrapped in blue wrapping paper with little moon cycle designs on them, all tied together with a pretty silver bow. Carefully undoing the wrapping paper, Miku popped the top off the present and peered inside before taking the items out one by one.

The first item was a collection of different scented candles with the names of different goddesses labeled on them.

The second item was a small nightlight shaped like a full moon, the light giving off a warm and comforting glow.

The third and final item was 3 small vials filled with various herbs, plants, and dried up fruit, Miku quickly recognized this as a blessing jar.

After putting all the gifts away, Miku noticed that there was a note at the bottom of the box, pulling it out, she began to read through it.

“Happy Birthday, Shirazuki-San.

We don’t talk much but we have a few classes together, sorry if this comes off as weird but I knew it was your birthday and wanted to send you a gift, I hope you like them or at least don’t find them too creepy. Once again, happy birthday and I hope you have a good day/night.

Miku blinked, her eyes traveling back and forth between the moon lamp in front of her and the moon lamp that was already on her bedside table.

It’s the exact same model…

After some time to think it over, she simply shrugged. Maybe it won’t hurt to just keep a second one around.

Miku’s eyes travelled to the vials of herbs, plants, and dried fruits. Without realizing, the corners of her lips lifted into a small smile.

Well it’s too bad I already performed my circle for the day, I kinda want to do another one with these candles and blessing jars.

Though the date of her birth had already passed, that didn't mean that the celebration for one of Japan's most widely known and celebrated idols was over. Though it was late in the day, a large package arrived outside Miku Shirazuki's apartment addressed to her. Coming back from her classes, the woman looked at the large box outside her door. Sighing, she unlocked the door first before lugging the large box inside her home. Looking at the shipping address, she looked as it was sent from somewhere here in Minato. Opening it up, she peered inside the box and looked at what was inside:

It was a multitude of gifts, including a t-shirt, a pair of wine glasses, and a moon lamp with a wide variety of colors mixed in. She blinked as she looked at all of items inside, each which had to do with her interest in astronomy. Looking inside, she also saw there was a note, which was addressed to her. It read:

"To Miku,

A very happy birthday to you. I apologize for sending these out late. My work and life has been busy, as of late. I'm glad to hear you are doing well and better since leaving your former life behind. My son, Zakari, whom you may or may not know from classes, told me about your new love of astronomy, so my family and I decided to send to you. The moon lamp is from me, the glasses are from my wife, and the shirt's from Zakari. I hope you enjoy them all. Again, a very happy birthday to you. I wish you all the best.

Miku twirled around her room and unplugged her moon lamp from the outlet, replacing it with her new colorful moon lamp.

She lied down on her bed, wearing nothing but the tshirt that she received (which was three sizes too big on her) laying on her side to watch the bright colors mix together in admiration.

Her eyes travelled to the wine glasses she received that she left on her bedside table. “I could go for a wine right about now… Ah who am I kidding, I’ve never had wine. But maybe now’s the year to try some.”
