The nuns had every indication to treat Jonathan as a lost cause, a madman.

His one possesion, his journal, is in shorthand. That's scribbles, they might as well be nonesense from his confused mind.

He has been rambling about horrific things that make no sense. Ghosts, demons...

He remembers nothing and no one for six weeks.

Yet they keep his journal, they pay attention to what he says without disregarding it, they wait patiently until he remembers something, anyone. All while taking care of him in a sanitorium.

Treating "madmen" like human beings makes them get better slowly but surely, instead of worsening their condition.

The Hungarian St Joseph and Ste Mary hospital is the foil of the London Asylum.

Big yellow eyes sank into dark ones,

It's such a weird perspective seeing people who watched Renfield treat Rebecca's wounds and protect her after she arrested him without question and proceeded to berate him in his apartment because like

On the surface level, people take that as a sweet gesture on Renfield's part, showing how sweet and caring of a person he really is

But in reality, he's not showing what a caring and sweet person he is...he's showing that despite being mistreated and blamed for something that isn't his fault, he's been conditioned to believe that he still has to be the one to service the people in his life.

We also see this behavior when Rebecca reacts violently to Renfield's sarcastic joke, in which, despite Rebecca's response to the situation clearly being the one that was out of line, Renfield is the one to instantly try to defuse the situation and apologize.

Like, I'm not trying to say you can't get what you get out of their interactions. Lord knows I'm not one to talk about that. And yes, I'm aware the situation is clearly dramatized for comedic effect, but like...

It's just so jaw dropping to me to see people miss this so often and not see (or rather ever acknowledge) the way Renfield falls right back in with someone else who is quite abusive and aggressive themself, to the point where Renfield actually feels the need to point out their tendency towards anger as a response to situations.

It's a very raw and real thing as someone who himself went straight from an abusive parent into an abusive relationship as a teenager living on his own. (Not my current partner obviously. They're wonderful and have been a huge support system in my healing journey. I can't thank him enough for that, honestly.)

Anyway, I just don't think it's brought up enough how real it is that Renfield so easily falls right back into a destructive situation with the literal next person he tries to build any sort of relationship with and I think it's a really important detail to his growth as a person to not only see it, but to see that he eventually starts to recognize that behavior in this new connection and learn to call it out.

Seward is displaying some Dracula traits here. He owns an immense house in which the residents are locked up and he has control over. He has a new favorite "guest", Renfield. He's fascinated by him, spends more time than others with him, he admits taking his darker feelings out on him (after his rejection). Both of them are higher class, stoic and give the impression of being undominable, but we know they hide strong feelings.

As @thebibi pointed out: Both Jack and Dracula are itching for something or someone new, and are shown to be lonely and seeing new prospects, when they both have 3 people who know precisely who they are.

A few differences so far are that he's only 29 while Dracula is old, and confesses feeling guilt for his actions.

Renfield is, like Jonathan, trapped and at the mercy of someone with power over him. They're both passionate/sanguine, fascinating, intelligent, and struggle with Sanity. They both are incapable of moving forward as of now.

A few differences so far is that while Jonathan is lower-middle class and stepping into adulthood, Renfield is upper class and stepping into elderly age.

Mentally ill queer man writes mentally ill queer character. 200 years later, Dracula Daily happens and everyone in their mother immediately starts poking fun at him, demonizing him, or treating him like a naive child when none of these things are true. I could write a darn essay about Renfield and his role in the story. His status as a servant of Dracula is kept hidden from our heroes despite how obvious it is to the modern reader, and it turns into a striking example of dramatic irony. But at the same time, he's not a simpering servant; he's psychotic and Dracula feeds his delusion for his own gain. His death isn't a sacrifice, it's a tragic end to a story about the effects of isolation on the mind and the suffering that can come about from people refusing to listen to those who aren't like them. Pretty damned amusing, then, that absolutely no one seems to listen to the words that come out of his mouth.

people hate this guy. people HATE this guy. and for what? "hes abusive" you are out of your MIND if you actually think that. let middle aged men be messy jilted lovers, goddamn!!!!

Oh my gods, fandom has lost their minds with this one. People act like Izzy is the devil himself and actually it's his fault that the main love interest of the show has ever done anything wrong ever. Every bad thing in the show? Actually Izzy's fault. I've seen people literally, actually say he deserved his abuse and that it's his fault his abuser hurt him and that he liked it. I have seen people unironically say that his abuser should have killed him. I've seen people say that Edward Teach (y'know, literal Blackbeard who explicitly says in canon, with his mouth, "I love a good maim" would never have done anything violent ever if it wasn't for Izzy's manipulation. This is, of course, ignoring that Ed's first acts if violence were before he ever even met Izzy

So Ed and Izzy have a toxic relationship and do bad stuff to each other. And Izzy fans will minimize the shit Izzy did while bringing up what he suffered. And Ed fans will maximize the shit Izzy did and forgot the rest. Honestly I'm might be bringing a lot of anger on the blog for this, sorry.
