Things I wish I could see more often in fiction: Have The Hero reach out and accept The Corruption wholeheartedly with both hands and getting absolutely Drunk On The Dark Side until The (Friendly) Rival (or The Crush, sometimes they’re the same person even) swoops in for an I Know You Are In There Somewhere Fight (with a side of “This isn’t you”/”Remember what you originally wanted to do”) and a massive helping of (homoerotic) Ship Tease. Those arcs always hit just a little different when it’s the hero who gives in and accepts it with both hands instead of having it forced upon them by the enemy. There’s something about it being a Personal Choice that’s just so much more impactful.

It also provides a lot of good context for The Hero’s speeches later on if there’s another repeat Corruption Arc and it’s their allies (or Crush, take your pick) who ends up on the receiving end of The Corruption because then the empathy and compassion the hero shows through their speeches isn’t just lip service - they’ve been there before and knows how it feels and how awful they felt after. It also means The Hero forgiving said allies almost immediately makes sense - their allies did that for them once, this is The Hero doing the same for them. It adds so much depth to the All Loving Hero that I wish they’d do it a little more often.

「 @universestreasures​ | Asaka Narumi」 issued a challenge:        

Tonight's show would be a private affair, one to be shown to one person and one person only. She had been spending all week in preparation for it, training with some of the new beasts she had tamed as well as ones Ren had from the Abyss through the magic of his glowing eyes she had learned from that Rekka bratt was called Psyqualia. It was going to be one of her best performances, and all for his sake. What kind of better present for his birthday could she give to him?

Well, delivering Kai to him on a silver platter for one thing. Asaka knows that's what Ren wants more than anything. She doesn't understand why he refuses to give up on that dragon, why the dragons she keeps taming just are not enough. What made Toshiki Kai so damm special?!

Perhaps she just can't understand. Asaka doesn't know what happened in the few months she had taken that journey during their youth, and she doesn't want to bring it up. Maybe that's because she's scared of the answer. She's scared that maybe it was during that time Toshiki Kai had replaced her in Ren's heart, a fact that seemed to be true still to this day.

Even so, she still continued to work hard. She became the brightest and most shining star in this or any other land, all for the sake of desperately wanting to keep being by Ren's side and to get his love. The moments where he did give it to her, when he let himself be vulnerable and forget about Kai for a short time, were what she lived for these days. She hopes this performance will be enough to allow him to truly be happy, even if no show since Kai ran off has been able to do that.

"Ladies and gentlemen! Tonight's special performance is dedicated to someone very near and dear to me, someone who is like no other and to the one who makes all of this possible! The amazing Ren!" She gestures to him from his seat high above, glad to see that he did attend. She hopes the performance will be enough to keep his attention. It no doubt hurts her whenever he leaves performances early due to boredom, but she would keep performing regardless. She would see this and every show till the end, such is her role as the Ringmistress of the Pale Moon Circus.

"Let the curtains rise on the first act of our special spectacular show! I hope you enjoy it!"

She had addressed the nonexistent crowd as if this was no different than any other show. Despite the fact that aside from Asaka and her performers, there was only Ren in the stands under the tent on this particular night. 

Of course he was aware it was his birthday, the constant reminders made it hard to miss, not that he seemed to care and treated it as he would any other day. Save for times he used it as an excuse with Tetsu or that Kyo kid to get out of this or that and skirt around his responsibilities for the day. Honestly he had wished to laze about in his shared chambers with Asaka, but she had been occupied for a number of days now. It was too bad, but it was what it was. 

--‘What do you want for your birthday?’

It’s an inevitable, redundant question that pesters him without fail every year. What he wanted... What he wanted was Kai. What he wanted was to fulfil the images Psyqualia would present him with. What he wanted--

He continued to ponder on that thought all day, even after he was sat down in the VIP seating under the Pale Moon Circus’ main tent for a show that evening. But now that he thinks about it... He didn’t organize a performance for tonight. Nor was he aware that such an event was underway until the spotlight was on Asaka in the center ring.

❝ So this is what you were up to then, A-chan. ❞

She dedicates the upcoming performance to him, and suddenly her behavior leading up to tonight had all made sense. A private event, just for him. 

His ability to call upon Psyqualia has improved greatly since that spiral-haired girl who’s name always seemed to escape him had showed up. Ren wasn’t bombarded with visions until he neared collapse as he once used too, and he could incite the power pretty much at will now. But normally his eyes would show him how a show was to end, and how to get to that predestined conclusion. If it didn’t happen on it’s own he could force it now that he’s mastered the art. Unconsciously his eyes start to emit light, but the lights in his eyes dies down almost immediately as Asaka gestures to him, and him alone.

--What fun would it be to spoil Asaka’s surprise? It wasn’t often Ren had found himself caught off guard, and Asaka had already managed to do so more than once in the matter of minutes.

Perhaps this was his chance to enjoy the Pale Moon Circus as if he was but another attendee. 

So he sits back, a change of position to how he had been but a moment prior. He was seemingly uninterested before, lost in a well of his own thoughts. But now he seemed to be rather invested, especially as the lights signaled the rise of the curtains for the Ringmistress’ show. The judgmental air he usually wore as he assessed Asaka’s shows as they followed his expectations wasn’t present tonight. And despite how the atmosphere practically sparked with excitement, Ren wore a rather relaxed expression. He was always able to relax around Asaka, but perhaps this was the first time she could witness his face as he did so. Times he found himself in such a state were usually spent in the dark of their chambers, hidden away from everything that troubled him by shrouding himself in the shadows. But he was able to put away all that even out here, bathed in the spotlights as they danced around the subject of tonight’s event.

She asked him, the audience, to enjoy.

This was a show for him after all, and he planned to do just that. 

As she announced the start of the show, he takes the silence before the storm to applaud her. It shows he was watching, and ready to be wowed. Ren would often take to making himself known to her before she got into character to perform, be that a small wave or shoutout. But that was as Director. For now, he was her audience. And he planned to treat it as such and play along by getting into character himself.  

❝ Alright, Ringmistress... Show me something that even my eyes have yet to manifest. If anyone can manage such an incredible feat... It’s sure to be you. I’m ready to witness it. Show me your everything-- ❞

--‘What do you want for your birthday?’

The question was far removed from his mind at that moment. But he knows the answer now, if he was to be asked again next year:

renai fankid. Kagero user. Psyqualia. A really nice kid. A bit lethargic and has his head in the clouds. He’s mostly daydreaming about vanguard and Cray. He keeps an optimistic attitude regardless of how others treat him. He can be a little sneaky and playful, using things to his own advantage (ie. using his cute charms for a headpat) but never had any ill intentions. Thanks to his best friend ‘mothering’ him he is a little spoiled and tends to expect the same from others. When he was younger, he was bullied and kept that to himself, not wanting to make his best friend or anyone else worried. He doesn’t want to feel like a burden to others. Is aware that he is a little ‘weird’ and is labelled as an ‘outcast’ so doesnt want others to fall into that same pit.

Shiro

Link Joker user. transfer from Hong Kong (chinese/japanese) and knows the Soryuu family. Was supposed to be an Aqua Force user. A very serious cardfighter. Dislikes nicknames. Has a hard time getting along with others who are the ‘fooling around’ type. Isn’t mean but does speak his mind. He is actually a very chill and kind person but loses his chill when around kousuke and michi (mostly Michi). Doesn’t laugh a lot, more on the stoic side. Can knit. Might be nominated for Student Council president??

Momoka (Momo)

Mikuru’s daughter. Pale Moon user. A vanguard nerd who keeps up to date with everything, it helps that she works at card capital. Keeps her job a secret bcuz she’s not supposed to have one but she doesnt work all the time. More like 1-2 days a week, 3 at most. Her mom wanted to be an idol and she does to so she has a stressed life. She’s not that popular, yet. Hardworking and determined but doesn’t really give herself a break. She comes off as tired but its worth seeing people smile, on or off the stage. Her stage name is the Pale Moon Witch? Uses a wig or lets her hair down as an idol, keeps it a secret.

Tatsunagi OC (I never named her cries)

Tatsunagi family (takes over after Nome). Like the others, she is simply an observer watching between Earth and Cray. Knows about the half units on Earth.

Kuro

Shadow Paladin half unit. One of the Dark Dragon’s Grade 4 kids. Meant to oppose the Ezel half unit. Emotionless and sticks to the mission. Is somewhat curious about Earth and doesn’t know how some things work. Goes to Fukuhara. Clueless about relationships and is just a pawn to the Dark Dragon.

Mamoeni fankid (never named her either RIP)

nonbinary? Angel Feather/Gear Chronicle. Good and quiet child with a heart of gold but stricken with an illness.

Sayako

Mamoru’s gf. Shadow Paladin user. Has a bad habit of smiling when nervous. Has to live up to older sister’s legacy but can’t handle it so she tries to come off as indifferent/nonchalant. Family thinks she’s heartless. Doesn’t know if she hates her sister or not because thanks! you left me with shit to deal with. Not lazy but hates being compared to her sister. Good but snarky.

Haru (not pictured here waaaaa)

Angel Feather user. sadistic/masochistic type of person. works as a bartender. an ex-delinquent. is still physically strong and can kick your ass outside a cardfight. doesn’t always think plays through, but lady luck is on his side so it turns out in his favor. doesn’t cuss at work but will 100% cuss outside of work.
