I’m giving writing a shot again
This story is set in a very-near-future dystopia and follows two trans women doing what they can to hold on. One brews and distributes black market estrogen. The other can hear the screams.
I’m experimenting with switching between two POV characters, with different narrative styles for each. This first 4000 words is a proof of concept. I’m going to spend some time outlining more before I update with additional chapters.

Book Review: Good Me, Bad Me
Book Review: Good Me, Bad Me
Hello Readers, I hope you’re enjoying the turn of the season. The cold is finally here in Kansas City, and I’m loving it! Anywho, it’s book review time once more! This time I read Good Me, Bad Me by Ali Land. This is an assigned group read for my reader’s advisory class and I was running short on time for the deadline, so I kind of swan dived right into this one. How did it end up? Keep on…

I want to hear the niche anime recs
Oh I GOT you. Most of these are all short watches, 12/13 eps, and absolutely worth anyone's time--there's also enough genres here that I hope there's something you like.
Do you like thrillers, bright colors, and edge-of-your seat scifi dystopia action? Akudama Drive had me so hooked I watched all 13 episodes, no breaks, and then it broke my heart at the very end as a parting gift. Fuckin incredible pacing.
Want a silly crime show that's an easily digestible buddy cop until ep7 takes you for an absolute ride with a skyrocketing body count and tonal whiplash? I watched Millionaire Detective: Balance Unlimited just for the seiyuus originally but the cast made me soft for them. 12 eps, not very high octane, and very sweet.
Interested in a vampire romance that somehow manages to quietly deconstruct heteronormative, allonormative societal constructs about falling in love on top of sick character designs and a gorgeous atmosphere? Call of the Night is a brilliant 12 episodes that had me absolutely whipped for the chemistry between the two leads.
Do you want something dark that nevertheless doesn't take itself too seriously? Hakata Tonkatsu Ramens is an anime about hitmen who play baseball on their off days, but it's also about found family and the lead is a crossdressing, grumpy assassin who ends up in a funny roommate situation as the premise of the show. Fantastic use of the style where each arc is a case, and the characters are both hilarious and heartfelt. Thanks to @neon-snail-city for the amazing rec.
Okay, picture this: sci-fi crime/psychological thriller, except you don't know if the twist is time travel, seeing the future, or something else entirely. Captured criminals take a deep dive into the minds of serial killers in order to catch them in Id:Invaded and it's such a brilliant overlooked anime that I can't believe it's so under the radar. I've heard it's similar to Psycho Pass but I haven't watched that yet, so I can't confirm.
Hear me out here: Interspecies Reviewers may be an ecchi pushing the boundaries of how much titty they can show on TV, but it has the most nuanced and intelligent exploration of kink, sex, and boundaries that I've ever seen in anime. And it's batshit hilarious, so if you like dirty humor, this one is a fun ride.
I can't make a niche anime rec list without Mars Red, either. Another vampire anime, except this one is a lot heavier. If you're a fan of anime that deals with grief, what it means to be human, and how to survive in a fast-changing world, Mars Red has some heart wrenching stories to tell you. I've talked a lot about it on this acc if you search the Mars Red tag :)
If you're a magical girl fan who enjoyed Magica Madoka and you're looking for something else bonkers to fill the void, check out Princess Tutu. It has some of the rawest writing I've ever seen, and it's about characters deciding if they want to fight fate or follow it in a crushing exploration of the fairytale genre--it's incredibly meta and self-aware as its main gimmick, too.
This one was popular enough to get a second season, but I love Snow White with the Red Hair too much not to put it here. It's a sweet shoujo romance with a fairytale setting and the female lead is one of the most badass, headstrong women I've ever seen. She doesn't take shit lying down and the male lead is head over heels for her, plus the side characters are super endearing.

sorta forgot that to get a publishing agent you have to, like, contact publishing agents. absolutely devastated. will be nitpicking my manuscript for the next two to three months as a method of procrastination.

Harringrove folie a deux, except they're so delusional that they don't realize that by merely being in each other's orbit they hasten the other's decline into madness.
But apart their worlds crumble and reality is cold and lackluster.
Which is crueler, letting them blissfully destroy each other? Until nothing is left of the other? Or parting them and watching each waste away the remainder of their days to tedium and loneliness?

Thinking about the Yin Yang trilogy in Psych. A show that was a comedy. I mean yeah it was also a crime/drama but it was predominantly a comedy. Like B99.
But of all the storylines and subplots and arcs within the show, (tbf I only got up to s7 but still) the Yin Yang trilogy was fuckin WILD. Like...yeah sure B99 has some intense stories. Show Me Going and Moo Moo (?) or whatever had me on edge. And then those ones with Jake in prison and then in witness protection cuz of whoever.
But the Yin Yang trilogy was a whole ass psychological thriller. Well the first two at least. But still, the show is predominantly a comedy and you Can get serious storylines in comedy. But that's a whole other level. The closest thing I can think of for B99 is The Box.
The Yin Yang trilogy had me on the edge of my seat tho holy shit. And when Shawn tells Gus that him making jokes is how he's dealing with such a stressful situation. Because people's actual lives are on the line if Shawn can't beat Mr Yang. And we find out the final target is his mother. And then in Mr Yang Presents, Shawn is forced to save only one of two people. And ofc you can't be in two places at once.
But seriously, you watch any other episode and they're mostly comedy light-hearted fun. Ofc there's the episodes after Juliette finds out the truth about Shawn which adds some drama and tension. But overall it's nothing on how fuckin intense the Yin Yang trilogy was. AND IT'S A COMEDY.
It's a comedy that did a psychological thriller story really fuckin well too. Like...I'm not sure what I would've expected had I know what I'd be in for when I was first watching it. But my god did those episodes go hard. For me the first two were more memorable but still. They didn't Need that ongoing plot but they did it. And they executed it so goddamn well.
AAAAAAAA THOSE EPISODES ARE SO GOOD

out of curiosity, are there any stories (other than your own) on tumblr that you've found portray torture/adjacent subjects with more tact and accuracy?
on tumblr? honestly? no.
but what i personally seek out is also this very tiny niche-within-a-niche-within-a-niche kinda thing so im not making it easy on myself lmao
focus on atmosphere, absurd degree of subtlety, author is willing to grapple with some actually fucky dynamics (love/hate isn't enough), has to have a solid theme, etc. psychological fiction tends to hit the mark for me in this regard, but not a lot of people write those genres, so
has to feature copious amounts of violence, but specifically violence with the vibes i'm into lol rip. im openminded but it has to feel "real", and the gay villain stereotype makes me exhausted
"portrays torture realistically" - nobody likes to do research and popular culture has sucked up all the propaganda. this is, genuinely, the tiniest niche of them all
usually the fiction i read hits one or two of these at once, but all three kinda have to align for me to go batshit over it enough to recommend it to others. this just does not happen a whole lot. especially not on tumblr, cause writers here tend to have fandom trope brain. just not my thing ykwim. i try to seek out writers on tumblr pretty often but man, i just have much, much better luck outside of social media
if yall have recs, please, im desperate lmfao
oh and if you want a rec for a thing i love (not really about torture, more just violence/sadomasochism): xavier dolan's tom a la ferme is so fucking good. its the pinnacle of psychosexual thriller imo

i dont actually think that horror poll is an accurate test of aversion/attraction to horror. a lot is missing about types of horror, active search of it or types of it, how well one knows the genre, etc

yes hi hello
thriller bark (*several yells in general*)
but like
are you telling me sanji got *stabbed* and then proceeded to do some heavy lifting (after getting Tossed and Flattened) in the oars fight and he's *still* alive??? I feel like we're ignoring the part where he got stabbed???? in the left side of the chest???? where a lot of the heart is????? (and yeah it's never overtly stated *where* the wound is but like?? its in the area???? thats probably bad right????????)
Now, i get in the following scenes its played off as comedic cause like, what else you gonna do? hes busy getting ObliteratedTM and getting *stabbed* isn't important right now (and tbh I'm down to ignore the *waves vaguely* absalom conversation/fight stuff too if given a choice cause Yikes) but I feel like a lot of the kuma scene is so much Worse when you remember and acknowledge he got *stabbed*?????
like its definitely Essential Sanji to go personal consequences be damned, kuro cannot take Luffy. Essential zoro too but sanji is hurting, and zoro is respectable and will want to do this solo anyway, theres no way that.... zoro can't finish kuma.... oh god...... well, they still got this, wounds be damned, for everyones sake! then he's falling and hes broken himself more for the effort and now theyre Officially Done For. No hope. Nothing left. This is it.
Both zoro and sanji having 'failed' solidifies that their only option is what zoro is presenting; a trade, because luffy *cannot* die. Cannot. so when zoro offers his head, sanji Knows. he is held together by the buttons on his suit jacket and a prayer and he Knows. most definitely stabbed and bleeding and crushed he Knows, knows clearly that regardless of who is traded he Will Not Make It... he Knows, deeply and utterly... and he can tell zoro wants to believe otherwise...
"Don't make luffy lose both of us, shitty marimo"
with the intense calamity that is his self worth playing chess with his brain, the burning need not to be a burden, and the bright ache slowly consuming him, he Knows, and he accepts
There is so much that Could Be if looked at with this thought pattern context. Makes things... i dunno its more...tragic? intricate? heartbreaking? Everything could change. Nothing could change. If sanji was poised to die anyway, would zoro actually accept it? would zoro refuse the inevitable and they both end up dead? could they both live? could chopper only save one? would they have to choose? would genetics or humanity win? would luffy Find Out? what would never be the same again? what would never change??
There are several reasons things didn't happen this way (other character moments, the genre this fits in, the rewarded hope that is the heart of one piece, ect.) but if it did.... yall... the *possibilities*
