Yesterday, Sunday 25th February, a man self-immolated outside the Israeli embassy in Washington D.C. His name was Aaron Bushnell, 25 years old, a member of the US Air Force. Whilst burning, he screamed “Free Palestine” in protest against the ongoing genocide and refusing to be apart of the US Military’s complacency.
Self-immolation is a historic act of protest; during the Vietnam War, Thích Quảng Đức, a Muhayana Buddhist monk, self-immolated in protest of the persecution of Buddhist Monks by the South Vietnamese government.
We believe Aaron Bushnell’s spirit will see a Free Palestine, may his memory be a blessing and may it fuel this revolution. May his sacrifice be a call to action for those who should have ended this seige on Gaza, on Palestine, decades ago.
You can read a thread on Bushnell’s sacrificial protest here, however we must warn you in advance for disturbing details. As much as his protest is important, please don’t put yourself in mental anguish if you know you cannot manage something like this in this moment. Come back to it when you can, as his noble sacrifice should be honoured.
His passing will not be in vain.

Aaron Bushnell, an active-duty USAF airman, set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in D.C. on February 25 to protest what he termed the “genocide” being perpetrated by Israel against Palestinians and the U.S.’s complicity in this.
Anyone remember or even aware of the same thing happening in front of the Israeli consulate in Atlanta in December?
Bushnell set up a Twitch channel to stream his act. The Amazon-owned platform removed the video and shut down the channel. However, it’s available on a variety of other platforms.
The short video shows him, wearing service fatigues, walking down the street to the Israeli embassy as he explains his views. He then sets down the camera, walks to the gate of the embassy, empties the contents of a bottle—presumably, the flammable liquid—over his head, puts on his cap. The video is blurred out at that point, but the audio is intact. He screams “Free Palestine” until he succumbs. It is extremely disturbing, and I do not offer that characterization lightly.
At the start of the video, as he walks down the street, he says this:
I am an active duty member of the United States Air Force. And I will no longer be complicit in genocide.
I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest. But at the hands of what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal.
On the Facebook post that linked to that deleted Twitch stream, he wrote:
Many of us like to ask ourselves, “What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?”
The answer is, you’re doing it. Right now.

Wait, are people like... under the impression that Oppenheimer is somehow... a glorification of nuclear warfare? About the man who was so horrified by his involvement in the Manhattan Project and its results that he spent his life afterward lobbying against nuclear weapons development, the nuclear arms race and competition with the Soviets, and the development of the hydrogen bomb in particular, that he got blacklisted as a communist during the McCarthy years and was essentially erased from the scientific community because of it?
That Robert Oppenheimer?

WELP, I have finished another that MCU Medieval Adultery AU that I've been going on about recently. It's a bit niche I suppose but someone out there is bound to be thrilled that such a thing now exists, and me and that person are now married on the astral plane. Possibly.
Anywho, AU!Thor has gone off to war and left AU!Loki in charge of the castle and his AU wife. You have three guesses about what happens next and if you need more than two of them I'll be shocked.
Title: Fair Alfrida (AO3) Fandom: Thor (Movies) Rating: Explicit Pairing: Loki/OFC Wordcount: ~6500 Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Medieval, Anglo-Saxon Period, Royalty, Consort Queens, Adultery, Betrayal, Sibling Rivalry, Loki Is Not A Good Bro, Jealousy, Seduction, Sexual Content, Manipulation, Lust, Not A Romance Fic, Dark-ish, Period-Typical Sexism, Pregnancy, Pregnant Sex, The OC Is Not The POV Character, Additional Warnings In Author's Note Summary/Snippet: Alfrida has always held a certain fascination for Loki simply because she is Thor’s, and the thought of somehow taking her from his brother has provided a pleasant distraction on occasion – idle speculation for a never-idle mind to play with, nothing more. At least at first.

Something in TPN that I have heard NO ONE mention is the symbolism behind Ray's attempt, self immolation has been used as an act of nonviolent protest for years, the definition of self immolation is literally "sacrificing oneself by setting themselves on fire usually for religious or political protest or martyrdom." My personal belief was that Ray wasn't so much suicidal, as in he wanted to die just to end his own suffering, but to make a final statement, he said himself that setting himself on fire was going to be an act of intense protest, waiting until he is the top product and ripping it away from them before they can get it, making one last sacrifice before they're taken to freedom, basically a huge "fuck you" to the farms and his mother who he served acknowledging the horrors of what the plantations did. The most famous instance of self-immolation is by Thich Quan Duc during the Vietnam war, he set himself on fire in an intersection on the streets of Saigon during a protest against religious and discrimination and political oppression.

9 But those who have a desire for wealth are falling into danger, and are taken as in a net by a number of foolish and damaging desires, through which men are overtaken by death and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all evil: and some whose hearts were fixed on it have been turned away from the faith, and been wounded with unnumbered sorrows. 11 But you, O man of God, keep yourself from these things, and go after righteousness, religion, faith, love, a quiet mind, gentle behaviour. 12 Be fighting the good fight of the faith; take for yourself the life eternal, for which you were marked out, and of which you gave witness in the eyes of all. — 1 Timothy 6:9-12 | Russian Synodal Translation - Protestant Edition (RUS) and Bible in Basic English (BBE) Russian Synodal Translation Bible (Protestant Edition) © Библия Онлайн, 2003-2021 and The Bible is Basic English, which is in the public domain. resurrecting on tumblr for five (5) minutes to confess I have once again joined a fandom that appears to consist entirely of myself and a brick, but I accidentally binged the show Irreverent this month and it's actually like....really good.
youtube
It helps that I'm a major fan of Colin Donnell and this is one of the first film projects where he really gets to show his acting chops alongside good writing. A criminal mediator from Chicago finds himself on the run after a job goes horribly wrong, landing him in a tiny town on the coast of Australia where he must impersonate their new minister in order to stay alive.
The plot has strong Music Man vibes but more crime lol. It's not a dramedy, it's a comedic thriller with a huge amount of heart, centering on a single lead character but featuring an ensemble of strong supporting characters. Whether you're religious or secular, you kinda get the idea that both the writers and the characters got all their theological knowledge from watching Jesus Christ Superstar, but it manages to be appropriately ridiculous and occasionally poignant even so.
One of the most compelling parts of the story is something Colin, who plays the criminal-turned-priest, zeroed in on during cast interviews: the charm and hook of the story relies on Paolo/Mack being able to be whoever and whatever he needs to be for whoever or whatever situation happens to be in front of him. Sometimes it changes within a scene. He's a reverend, a thief, a mentor, a scapegoat, a mastermind, a friend, an enforcer. It happens over and over, allowing Colin's acting and the show's writing to shine as he seamlessly transitions from humor to gravity, from being adorable and sweet to being downright intimidating and a threat. One of the best examples of this is when another character angrily confronts Paolo's complete lack of ability to lead the church and Paolo accepts the rather deserved tirade. Two seconds later, the other character is weeping at the end of their rope and Paolo steps in as comforter.
It's quirky, it's well-made, it crosses more than a couple genres and does so well. It had better get a second season and the second season had better complete the story because I didn't actually think I would like it much when I put on the first episode but now I'm invested and I need the remaining questions answered. Also I need somebody to make gifsets who can make them pretty. So. Go watch it, giftset makers.
tl;dr Irreverent on Peacock is highly enjoyable. It has pros and cons but basically if you watch the trailer up there and afterward feel like you want to give it a go, you'll probably like it too.
