A winning formula for writing business proposals
For most businesses, writing business proposals is a necessary part of the sales process. It can be a time consuming process and most businesses waste their time and create poor proposals, which is good news for some. 
Those who write winning proposals follow these 5 principles:
1) It’s about the client, not you.
Show that you understand their needs and you know how to solve their problem with a reasonable value proposition. Proposals are often made to be about the company who sends them. “Our team includes x” and “We are the best because of y”. If your proposal isn’t putting the clients needs, and their problem, front and centre then you’re already a step behind.
2) They don’t care what you sell, they care how you’ll solve their problem
Demonstrate how you’ll solve the clients problem and what value they’ll derive from using your product or service. Explain how you have solved similar problems for other clients in the past and what the results were.
3) If it’s too complicated you’ve lost them
People are time poor, but the most important issue is that there are many other companies vying for the clients money. Keep your proposals short and to the point. Having a proposal with ‘thud’* factor may work for million dollar deals or when selling highly technical professional products but the vast majority of proposals just don’t need it.
Keep jargon to a minimum, and unless you’re selling to a technical person, then dumb down your proposal in to language and terms that everyone can understand. Terms & conditions can also complicate proposals. Make it easy for the client to understand your terms. If they don’t have to get a lawyer involved to approve the terms & conditions you’ve made the process easier for them and taken out a barrier to getting the proposal signed off.
4) Client’s won’t give you a second chance to make a great first impression
Clients form opinions quickly. They also receive many proposals so standing out from the clutter is difficult. Did you know that 94% of first impressions are design related? We don’t all have design skills and in case you weren’t aware, software like MS Word certainly isn’t a design program, but there are online tools that can assist in this regard. 5) Ask for the business
This is a sales principle that has been around forever. Add a call to action and ask for the business in your proposal. Make it clear to the client what the next step is. How do they approve your proposal and what do they need to do to get the project up and running. 
Asking for the business also involves following up with your client. Call them and ask for the business. This becomes much easier if you are using proposal software that alerts you when your client has opened your proposal. You’ll know when to contact them to ask for their business.
