Dolls of New Albion is structured so that once the story moves on a generation, characters from the previous generation leave the stage. Which is practical, because it means that you can have the same actors play different characters so that only a few actors are needed. But it's also interesting because we don't get to see any interactions between parents and children in the McAllistair family, despite the fact that the whole thing centres on the McAllistairs liking Jasper in fucked up ways because of their fucked up relationships with their parents. I've talked before about how Annabel and Byron "love" Jasper in a way that they see him as an escape from their lives, as a representation of everything that they want. Annabel wanted to create something incredible (Jasper) because her parents made her feel that she was worthless if she didn't, and she wanted a friend (Jasper) because her parents isolated her and didn't allow her to make friends. Byron used Jasper as a symbol of rebellion because he's rebelling against his dad, he wants to "reject his father's world". He probably resent Edgar for trapping Fay in a loveless marriage. Also, Edgar uses Jasper to blackmail Fay into staying with him. Could Annabel dying when he was only ten years old have anything to do with him being unable to handle rejection and needing to be loved? Family relationships are at the heart of this story, but we only see the effect of these relationships and not how they play out. The narrative keeps moving on, "the future beckons and won't wait". I think this just goes to show that the characters have such a short amount of time to make an impact on the story. You only get one chance, so don't waste it. This could be why Priscilla sacrificed herself, because she couldn't keep waiting and wasting time, she has to do what her predecessors failed to.

what is the dona actually about because im very confused
OK SO BASICALLY
spoilers for the dolls of new albion under the cut
GENERATION 1 so there’s this lady called annabelle mcallistair who is. well she gets kicked out of medical school for stealing dead bodies. and also she is in love with this guy called jasper and they kissed one time. but jasper is betrothed to someone else and they get married and then 🙀 jasper dies. so annabelle brings him back!! yay!!!! except he Comes Back Wrong so. not yay. anyway so she puts him in the body of a metal doll and takes him around places and she’s very happy bc she finally has a friend!!!!!! something something kate the narrator tells us this is not all good actually All You Love Does Not Love You also btw jasper can’t talk he can only communicate through the music he plays. and he sings a song about how elysium (heaven basiclaly) is really cool and great and he wants to go back Elysium The Place The When Your Sorrows End Why’d You Bring Me Here Again. and annabelle hears and she’s like ok :( i don’t want you to be unhappy so she kills/disassemblesbs/whatever him.
GENERATION 2 annabelle has had a son who’s name is edgar. sadly she dies when edgar is only 10. edgar grows up and has a girlfriend named fay but they break up :( oh well! edgar goes into the attic and finds the trunk where btw annabelle hid jasper’s doll body and also her formulas for raising the dead. i forgot to say that before but Yeah she did that. anyway edgar’s like ooh what’s this and surprise surprise he brings jasper back!!! and jasper is like fucking hell not this again (/j). anyway edgar is like you could make a religion business out of this! so Edgar Starts A Business of bringing people’s dead loved ones back to life and putting them in dolls so they can. have them? idk. anyway edgar is, as it turns out, a bitch, and goes to fay and he’s like. hey fay you remember how your dad died? yeah? well i brought him back lol he’s in my living room. you can talk to him, but only if you date me again :) also btw fay’s dad is jasper. so fay gets back with jasper they get married and……
GENERATION 3 fay and edgar have a son named byron! he inherits the doll, his dear jasper that he loves. also btw edgar is a shit father. by now there’s dolls everywhere and some people namely byron and his friend amelia (who also has a shit father AND DESERVED BETTER.) are like you could make a religion out of this! so they do it’s called voodoopunk and it’s fucking cool their songs are all the best btw. #votevoodoopunk anyway byron is gay and in love with jasper a little bit. um yeah that’s his grandpa it’s messed up. also btw amelia is in love with byron. meanwhile jasper is singing his song about how he wants to be died and amelia hears and she’s like hm this elysium place sounds pretty great. better than here where i’m have a horrible father and also in love with my best friend who is gay. so she kills herself :( and in her suicide note she writes the lyrics to jasper’s song which all the dolls have been singing nonstop. so the general public are like hm. this must be the fault of the dolls that this girl has died. we should make them illegal and burn them all! and jasper is like finally i get to die but not so fast lol bc byron saves him! wahoo.
GENERATION 4 dolls are now sooooo super illegal now btw. being in possession of one is punishable by death of both you and the doll. oh shit! byron is dead now but his daughter priscilla is hiding alone with jasper in the family home!! actually let’s pause the narrative for a minute for a super funky ballad about how new albion was created! a monk and a gambler are arguing about things (god and chance and fate) and to resolve they decide a game of cards indeed be played. anyway they play this card game for literally ages like one of them would have to die for it to end. so as they’re playing this seemingly never ending game of probably uno, around them is built a shelter and then more and more buildings until what do you know? the city of new albion is born! also btw remember when i said one of them would have to die for the game to end? what luck! the gambler has a heart attack or something and dies!! anyway back to jasper and priscilla. they are playing a never ending game of cards to pass the time :)) jasper still wants to die but he doesn’t want to leave priscilla alone or let her die bc she’s the only person he’s ever cared about :( but priscilla doesn’t want jasper to suffer but jasper doesn’t want priscilla to sacrifice herself. um anyway she calls the police on herself and jasper and her get shot :( also there’s a soldier called 24601 or something idk. anyway he doesn’t shoot and everyone is like soldier 7285 you fucking pussy why didn’t you fire. and he didn’t fire bc he realized Hm Maybe This Is Fucked Up. so he decides to do a revolution that will end the police state of new albion.
THE END!!!!!! also important note in the original cast recording there are four actors/singers. 1 singer for kate, 1 singer for jasper (mr paul shapera himself), 1 singer for edgar, byron, and the soldier, and 1 singer for annabelle, fay, amelia, and priscilla.

Thinking about how all of the McAllistairs except Priscalla treated Jasper as an idealised version of himself that represented whatever they wanted, which is shown by the phrase "my angel". For Annabel, it wasn't just because she loved him, it's because her parents made her feel that she was a failure if she didn't achieve something and because she desperately wanted a friend. He would be her angel that would save her from failure and loneliness (and she believed that to be successful she couldn't have friends, and to have friends she couldn't be successful, so this is the way of getting absolutely everything she wants). Initially he wasn't a person to her, but the personification of her greatest wishes.
To Edgar? He doesn't care about Jasper, he's a bargaining tool, a hostage almost to get Fay back. Again he's dehumanised and used to achieve whatever the current McAllistair wants to achieve.
Byron is a gay teenager, his parents should be divorced, he's angry at his capitalist father. He wants someone to care for him and also a way to "reject (his) father's world". Which is why he falls in love with Jasper and also uses him as the figurehead of Voodoopunk, a radical political movement that probably really pisses off his dad, as well as a cultural movement that involves alcohol, drugs, loud music and an obsession with the dead- things that nearly every teenager wants, let's be honest. Jasper is his "angel" that represents all these things to him.
At first, Priscilla is happy to play cards with Jasper. It's a scary place outside, she's a young child, there's probably nothing she wants more than to have Jasper as a comforting presence in her life. But she realises how Jasper has been treated. She sees him for who his is, respects what he wants, and is willing to sacrifice herself for him, because she loves him selflessly, unlike her ancestors.

If we take the McAllistairs treatment of Jasper as a metaphor for original sin, that's super interesting because that could imply that Jasper is a God figure. According to St Augustine, the original sin the sin commited by Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden by disobeying God, and all humans inherit it from their parents (specifically from their parents through the act of conception). Since sin separates humans from God, Jesus was like a sacrificial lamb, who took the blame for the sins of humanity and atoned for it by sacrificing himself so humans could be reconciled with God.
When Annabel raised Jasper from the dead, she separates Jasper from Elysium, which could symbolise separating humanity from God because of our sins (also Elysium is basically heaven and sins mean humans can't go to heaven). Annabel could represent Adam or Eve disobeying God, or if Jasper represents humanity, she could represent the serpent who tempts Eve, causing sin which departed humans (Jasper) from God (Elysium).
Her descendants continue the cycle, bringing Jasper back from the dead, which could represent how original sin is passed on. Although Byron tries to get close to Jasper, Jasper tells Priscilla that he's only loved her. If Jasper represents God, this could show how sins separate humans from God. This could also be shown by Jasper being separated from Elysium, which could imply that the McAllistairs represent sin itself, or the things that tempt humans to sin.
The Voodoopunks treatment of the Dolls could represent worshipping idols, which is considered sinful to Protestants.
Since Jesus is the incarnation of God, God made flesh, the fact that Priscilla is actually related to Jasper makes sense if Jasper is God. But Byron is also related to Jasper, so maybe not. Priscilla's sacrifice atones for the sins of her ancestors, returning Jasper to Elysium (reconciling humanity with God). It's also said that what saved humanity from their sins is the grace of God, meaning God's love, so it could be the fact that Jasper loves Priscilla that saves them both.
Soldier 7285 is called Saul, named after a man from the Bible who was originally called Saul and didn't believe in God, until he had a religious experience and changed his name to Paul.
In New Albion 7, Priscilla is a Saint, implying her sacrifice does indeed make her seem like a Christ figure.
I think the story of DONA also subverts the Biblical narrative. Priscilla isn't sacrificing selflessly out of unconditional love for all humanity, she acts out of personal love for Jasper. Jasper doesn't love all the McAllistairs unconditionally as God loves humanity. I think it also makes it quite clear that Jasper shouldn't be worshipped or idealised; he's very much a human.

All of the McAllistairs love so deeply, and that is exactly what's wrong with them and also what redeems them and yes this includes Priscilla.
Loving someone so much that you bring them back to life, willing to fight death itself just to have them with you again; loving someone so much you can't bear life without them so you do anything, no matter how brutal, to keep them with you, disregarding even their wishes and keeping them with you by force; loving someone so much you dedicate a religion to them, even run them for mayor even though they can't speak; loving someone so much that you're willing to die for them, sacrificing your own young life full of potential in order to give them what they want.
The difference is perhaps not the type of love but the type of people they are. It all depends on if they the person they love as an object or not, listen to what they want, and of course it's so easy to objectify someone who is also literally an object.
The all-consuming love that each McAllister feels causes them to do things that are both terrible and noble and I love that so much. The thing that stops the cycle is the thing that begun it

Angel Symbolism in New Albion + Ballad of Lost Hollow
so in this post I talk about how the line "be my angel" represents how the McAllistairs basically project all their desires onto Jasper and see him as a representative of what they want, disregarding his own wishes. An angel is a perfect being that brings messages from heaven and guidance. In Islam, angels have no free will. At the end of Dolls of New Albion, it's actually Jasper who calls Priscilla his "angel" because she is giving him everything that he wants by sacrificing herself to save him, essentially doing what Annabel and Byron expected/forced Jasper to do. So that's Dolls of New Albion.
In the New Albion Guide to Analogue Consciousness, when the Voodpunk pilgrims go to Elysium, they are attacked by "Angels". In my opinion, the fact that they went to Elysium expecting it to be a heavenly paradise, only to be met with creatures that kill them, is an echo of the McAllistairs taking Jasper from Elysium and expecting him to fulfill their wishes. It's ironic that "angels" are actually monstrous, and it shows the consequences of how the Voodoopunks didn't consider if the Angels wanted them in Elysium or not, similar to how the McAllistairs didn't consider if Jasper wanted to be taken from Elysium or not.
In the Room Beneath New Albion, the AIs, who are actually the Voodoopunk pilgrims, call themselves angels in order to get Alice to do their bidding. In this case, Alice believes she is doing something great, a special task sent from heaven for her to complete. However, in Ballad of Lost Hollow, we see all the trouble caused by the AI, and also the toll of them trying to fix the trouble they caused, and the effect on Alive herself. Again these "angels" are not quite as they seem.
In conclusion, Paul Shapera uses the images of "angels" to show that nothing is perfect, nobody exists simply to provide others with happiness, and to warn against the consequences of disregarding the feelings of others/ treating people as if their feelings don't exist or don't matter.
