CHAPTER UPDATE: Golden Towers, ch 6

HA FINALLY thanks for some good edits by hobbit and encouragement from the chat, i have finished chapter 6 of golden towers, which completes that story. i got Ciri to Nilfgaard and back out again, LOL. Laid some groundwork for future stuff, and now we're off to get some Vergen backstory set up.

“Well,” the Emperor said reasonably, when she objected, “their beloved queen went missing, so it’s not like there’s anyone to rule a separate Free State.”

“I could find Saskia,” Geralt interjected suddenly. “I know she’s not dead. She got out of the way so there wouldn’t be a fight when your troops rolled in, she wanted what was best for her people. But I could find her.”

“You could find her,” the Emperor said, dubious. “And you think her people would accept that, if she just-- turned up again.”

“I do,” Geralt said. “I’m quite confident they would.”

The Emperor waved a hand. “If you could find her,” he said, “it would be worth discussing, but that’s a big if.”

“I can,” Geralt said.

“I’m going with you,” Cirilla said.

The one person who’s actually still alive? Calanthe, Mousesack, and Pavetta all start to turn to ash. But Duny never does… interesting.

So, I watched The Witcher for the first time

And boy! This series was quite a wild ride...

My reactions to some episodes in no particular order (spoilers!):

Geralt. Wow. I love it when he gets this super wild look on his face, it's great. Also, nice hair and nice voice. Much scar, much muscle. Yeah, I like the guy.

Yennefer appeared on screen and I wanted to befriend her. I don't think her to be ugly and she seems nice.

There's more swearing in this series than I expected?

Wow, also a lot more nudity than I expected....

That striga is savage!

Wow there's dwarfs and elves as well? Nice!

RE: costuming in the new trailer for Netflix’s The Witcher

I’m hoping Ciri’s white furs and beaded dress are something she receives and wears after Triss comes to Kaer Morhen.

There’s a whole bit about “oops these witchers forgot she was a teenage girl when they were putting her through the Trial of Grasses” in the books. We did get a peek of her in ill-fitting training gear with Lambert at WitcherCon, and it’s confirmed that her training with the pendulum and such is shown.

Also in the books, when Ciri is concerned about managing her menstrual cycle during training and brings this issue to Triss, the sorceress does bring her some pretty clothes and new training and expectations. Triss does actually insist she act like a lady and a princess at times because, for Triss and other sorceresses, their beauty and bearing have been valuable weapons in their arsenal. Ciri takes to it fairly well so long as she’s with either Triss or Yennefer or at the temple school, and it doesn’t really fall apart until far later, when she’s separated from Geralt and Yennefer at the Tower of the Gull and joins up with the Rats.

Viscount Julian and Princess Ciri

Alright, something that has a been bothering me for a while.

The fact that Jaskier is a noble and that Ciri is a princess is something which in my opinion gets way overlooked in this fandom.

I don’t care how long Jaskier has been on the road as a traveling bard, this man was raised and born a viscount! That means privilege. that means for the first eighteen years of his life he never had to worry about food, clothing, or shelter. he had servants to command and the expectation that the world should treat him with respect. 

Even if you head canon him with an abusive father, this fact does not change.

and the thing about being born to privilege is that it leaves its mark. Even after years of living on the road, Jaskier would still say and do things that would never occur to his baseborn friends. 

Like imagine that one really rich person you know who is always talking about his vacation in Italy and skiing trips in the alps and that super expensive meal that you could never dream of affording. That’s what Jaskier would be like.

He is still a nice person. that doesn’t change, but he is a nice person who was born to privilege. in a modern context, he would definitely ask to see the manager if he was displeased. 

Ciri likewise was born a princess. Before the fall of Cintra, she never had to ask for a thing in her life, it was simply given to her. In Blood of Elves it is mentioned that she still sometimes talks like royalty. as in demands when other people would ask. She probably has to learn to say please and thank you. 

Especially when it comes to Jaskier, I think there is a tendency to portray him as this perfect character-someone who is funny and talented and kind and also feral and badass and so on and so forth. This puts him on an unfair pedestal and also kind of whitewashes his character. like give this boy some flaws.

give him an attitude that assumes he should be treated with respect. make him stumble into saying something insensitive about poverty because you know he would at some point. give him impractical tastes. like spending too much money on a bottle of wine and not even realizing it. 

give Ciri some trouble adjusting to not being a princess. to having to ask for things and having people actually say what they think to her face because they’re not afraid of being beheaded for it. 

just saying, keep in mind that despite everything they go through in the story, these two characters come from privilege, and that should color the way they hare portrayed in fandom.
