Pretty Book unlocked I was looking through all the various covers of Red White and Royal Blue by @casey.mcquiston and I went nuts over the Russian one...lo and behold, I found a copy... it came from a company in Finland. I wasn't going to get it, but then my partner asked me what I wanted for Valentine's Day and told me to buy the book. It was supposed to get here sometime next month... it arrived 13 days after ordering. I've finally gotten through this one! It's better than Chaos Rising but IDK how to explain it 🤔 I did learn more about this new threat to the Chiss but there's SO much political intrigue and espionage going on to make this review spoiler-free 😭 I'll rate this ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 . . . I bought this book only because it has an absolutely stunning cover, I haven't finished it yet but nevertheless, here's an excerpt I found interesting from this book.

“Having discovered that opium could generate huge profits not only in the Indian market but also in China (where it was a prohibited commodity), and that Bengali opium was of higher quality than that grown in western India, the British forced Bengali farmers to convert all their arable land to poppy cultivation; food crops were brought in from neighboring areas. With narcotic supplies thus ensured, the British carried on an illegal trade, smuggling opium into China and raking up huge profits. In the 1820s, the Chinese emperor Tao-Kuang tried to restrict the import of opium, but the British fought back. The First Opium War, which raged from 1839 to 1842, ended in China's defeat, resulting in the humiliating Treaty of Nanking. In 1856, the Second Opium War began. After being defeated again, the Chinese responded by legalizing opium cultivation in their country. As a result, the profits of smuggling Bengali opium were disastrously reduced, and, by the early twentieth century, the British trade in the drug was governed by internationally ratified treaties and regulations. One of Britain's best-known writers, interestingly, whose books denounced powerful, exploitative systems, was born in 1903 to a civil servant who supervised opium production in a town called Motihari, in the Champaran area of Bihar. He was christened Eric Arthur Blair, but the world knows him as George Orwell.”

I knew about the Opium wars but I had no idea about the forced cultivation of poppy seeds, it's hard to read about British colonization without getting (rightfully) enranged so it's a good idea for me to pace out books like that. This book is great (so far) if you want a glimpse of Bengali food History, but as I haven't finished it I can't really recommend it yet..
