@hudsonvalleyruins - We are extremely saddened to share news that the central administration building at the former Hudson River State Hospital is suffering what appears to be a devastating fire this morning, Friday, April 27, 2018. While much of the former hospital - one of the architectural marvels of the Hudson Valley - seemed destined for demolition, preservationists pinned their hopes on saving this central focal point of the complex. The work of the same designers who created Central Park, the administration building and original patient wings are among some 2,500 sites designated as National Historic Landmarks by the US Department of the Interior. Unfortunately, this honorific designation comes with no powers of protection. An article I wrote for the Poughkeepsie Journal about Vassar College's fall concert:

From my experience, it is usually highly uncommon for there to be crowd-surfing in a chapel.

However, for Vassar College on Nov. 2, it was to be expected. On that night, Vassar’s Chapel went from being solely a place of worship and the occasional school assembly or lecture to the site of the college’s fall concert, which featured the bands Sol, St. Lucia and Ra Ra Riot.

While opening acts usually are not met with as much enthusiasm as the headliners, every band was greeted with just as much excitement as the others, including the first. Sol, a group made up of 11 Vassar students, marked the first time Vassar College Entertainment (ViCE) invited a student band to open the fall concert.

Tenor saxophone player Ben Sandman, ’14, described the band’s evolving sound as “a mixture of soul and funk, taking cues from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, James Brown … there’s a hip-hop influence in there, too.”

Sol showcased two new songs they had written along with a few covers and several other melodies I recognized as theirs from having seen them play before. With lively drum, saxophone and guitar solos, as well as an animated performance from lead singer and band founder Andrés Estela, Sol was an exciting act in itself, and it also primed my palate for the other bands to come.

St. Lucia went on next; a pop/funk band, they played a good balance of songs to jump around and dance to, and also just to sit back and enjoy.

Among these included the band’s new EP, “September,” along with other favorites, such as “Closer Than This” and “All Eyes on You,” I could hear people singing along with.

By the end of their set, the room was vibrant with energy, which soon turned to bouncy restlessness as we watched St. Lucia pack up their instruments and waited for Ra Ra Riot to make their way onto the stage.

One of the most eager concert-goers was Mark Han, ’15, who has been a Ra Ra Riot fan since his junior year in high school.

“Ra Ra Riot’s rhythmic bass and the upbeat percussion works so well with the soft vocals, and the folky tune of the violin and the cello. It’s quite a mix of sounds that I haven’t really come across before,” Han said.

Truthfully, I had never experienced music or a performance quite like theirs either.

The addition of the violin, a bedazzled one at that, and the cello made for both a dynamic sound and a dynamic performance.

The band’s performance was certainly one not to miss.

Han said, “It’s also the buildup and the fantastic work with the lighting — and, of course, the opening by Sol and St. Lucia that just made it all come together.”

While on the photo walk a couple of weeks back with the NYC Photographers Meetup group when walking across the Roosevelt Mid Hudson bridge we paused to listen the musical art installation on the western tower called Bridge Music. Artist and musician Joseph Bertolozzi composed and recorded using mallets and what nots using only the sounds generated by the surfaces and components of the bridge!
