Brennan: "Porter takes it, takes out a pen, signs it in the other teacher's mark next to Zara's. And you see that the form only has two teacher signature spots on it. Signs it, writes an addendum, leaves a note, does some little bureaucratic thing. Goes,"

Porter: "I've heard a rumor. Did you tell someone on your spring break adventure to 'choke on grapes, *****?'"

Fig: "Did I?"

Gorgug: "I think so."

Ally: "Absolutely. Absolutely."

Fig: "I did."

(Murph looks so happy! 😂🤣)

Brennan: "Porter looks and says,"

Porter: "I've marked you as present for every class that you've been auditing for Barbarian classes. You've attended so many and your in-class contributions to discussion have been such a boon to the other students that on extra credit alone, I'm going to sign this and I'm gonna go to Principal Grix and say there was a miscommunication, Figueroth Faeth has been a Barbarian this entire time."

Fig: *whispering desperately* "I don't want to."

Gorgug: *slowly hands his MCAT to Porter*

Brennan: "He[Porter] smacks the MCAT outta your hand."

Porter: "You've never told anybody to choke on anything!"

Gorgug: "You're weird."

(the laughter 😂😂)

Porter: "Do you believe that?"

Gorgug: "Mm-mmm." *shakes his head*

Porter: "No, you don't."

Gorgug: "Yeah, I think you're weird."

Porter: "Yeah?"

Fig: "I can't even rage."

Porter: "Yes you can. Yes you can."

Fig: "You're ****ing right I can."

(Zac looks so done! 😭✋)

(Ally laughing 😂)

Fig: "Gorgug~"

Gorgug: "What?"

Fig: "I'm so ****ed."

Gorgug: "Fig, I don't know what's ****ing happening at all."

Ally: "Barbarian, Bard, Warlock."

Gorgug: "Are you doing this class too?"

(Murph's just going insane! 😂🤣💀)

Gorgug: "Wait, what happened? I thought we were just gonna get my form signed."

Fig: "I just made the Bard cry, the Bard teacher cry. And I tried to get your form signed. Now I got my form signed."

Gorgug: "What the **** is happening?"

Brennan: "You see Porter looks and says,"

Porter: *points at Gorgug* "This is a C- student."

(Lou sighs) (Me too, Lou. Me too. 😬)

Porter: *looks at Gorgug* "You bring your Barbarian class up to an A+ and I'll consider signing that form."

Gorgug: "Okay. Yeah."

Brennan: "He[Porter] looks back at you[Fig] and says,"

Porter: "As long as you keep auditing, you can have this."

Fig: "Okay."

Gorgug: "Must be nice..."

(Brennan's laugh!!! 😭😭✋✋)

Fig: "I want it for you." 😭✋

Gorgug: "I know, I just... he is really weird."

Fig: "He's so weird."

Gorgug: "Why can't I tell him he's weird? Why can't I tell him that?"

(the laughs! 😂🤣)

Fig: "Just flex at him."

Gorgug: *flexing* *whispers super quiet* "you're weird"

Brennan: "Incredible. Okay."

(all laughing)

Siobhan: "So quiet at the back of the class."

Ally: *flexing and whispering* "You're weird."

Siobhan: "Whispering in his pencil case."

Brennan: "Fig, you get your MCAT signed, which basically allows you-"

Ally: "Fig's having a yogurt year."

Brennan: "You feel your stomach gurgle a little bit as you-"

Siobhan: "She's in her yogurt era."

Ally: "Yeah."

Brennan: "Academically, you have permission, basically you can roll any other academic rolls with advantage because you have this piece of paper signed."

Emily: "Ohhhh, okay."

Brennan: "Right? So it doesn't have to be Barbarian. You can just keep showing up here."

Emily: "Okay, I'll take that. I will take that."

Brennan: "Basically looking at it, actually what Porter did was make your life easier."

Emily: "Really?"

Brennan: "Like make your life way easier because you can do all these other multiclass things with advantage. Any other classes you wanna go to, you roll with advantage. He basically has like lessened your workload, that you can jump right into Junior Year for any other class you're interested in."

Emily: "Okay, great. I thought I absolutely ****ed myself in trying to help Gorgug."

Brennan: "No, no, no, no."

the gorgug-porter conversation is interesting to me because like. yea for the overwhelming majority of the conversation porter’s being shitty & trying to fit gorgug into a box that gorgug just does not fit into by trying to make gorgug’s relationship with his rage more focused on the aggression aspect of it. but then there’s also this specific thing that brennan brought up again in the ap, which is that gorgug’s relationship with his rage is wholly “this is a tool i use to protect my friends.” which isn’t a bad thing! but that’s his Whole relationship with it, & gorgug seems to place next to no value on his rage in relationship to himself. which is problematic, because it’s first & foremost his rage.

being raised in a household with a sort of toxic positivity largely meant that, whether or not it was his parents’ intention, gorgug internalized the message that more traditionally “negative” emotions such as anger are the wrong response to something. part of the reason he prioritizes his artificing is probably because it’s “fixing” things. in comparison to being a barbarian, which gorgug associates with “breaking” things. good vs. bad behavior, in his eyes.

it’s a totally unacceptable bar to measure a 16 y/o by, but i do think part of porter’s reasoning for not letting gorgug multiclass is him recognizing that gorgug generally does not value anger as a valid emotional response to something, at the very least for himself. & that directly conflicts with what being a barbarian is, because whether you like it or not, that rage is what fuels you. but again, barring a kid from pursuing something they deeply care about in part (not entirely, porter has a lot of more bullshit reasons) because of their fundamental values & world outlook is crazy.

so yes, 98% of porter’s reasoning is pretty shitty, immature, rife with a toxic view that there’s only one proper way to access rage, & generally not a good thing to do as a teacher, but also within that reasoning is the 2% of ‘there is a fundamental part of yourself that you only value if you can use it to take care of other people & you need to accept that as something that can take care of you, too.’ but that’s something to discuss with a therapist or a guidance counselor, not something that should hugely impact gorgug’s academic future.

#gorgug thistlespring #fantasy high #dimension 20 #fhjy #fhjy spoilers #btw these r just my personal opinions u r 100% free to disagree #gorgug & his rage interest me so deeply because of how deeply that rage existing seems to be against gorgug’s own will #like mechanically classes are choices & you can switch stuff around any time. but gorgug as a barbarian always felt like an unwilling choice #like that 14 y/o kid did not want to have rage. & that really interests me.#i’ve seen people before be like ‘what if gorgug dropped barbarian & went full srtificer’ but i feel like that simply can’t happen??#mechanically yea sure but it always felt like a core part of gorgug that the rage will always be there & it’s a matter of how you channel it #idk. dnd classes narratively being treated as ‘you can not lose this part of you’ even though you technically can #gorgug could be lvl 19 artificer & he’d still have 1 level of barbarian. because that is part of who he is.#btw i don’t think porter truly cares about gorgug valuing his rage only as a way to be a human shield #i think porter just sees that as ‘wrong’ but like. not as in ‘you need to take care of yourself’ & more ‘you aren’t conforming’#he thinks it’s wrong for the wrong reasons. the nastier ‘this is how you should be’ reasons #ppl being like ‘we r being too hard on porter. it’s an 150% courseload gorgug will be overwhelmed’ i think r missing the point bc like.#that is 100% a valid reason to not approve gorgug for multiclassing! but that’s also 100% not the reason porter rejected him.#that whole interaction was basically porter shoving his percieved version of conformity down gorgug’s throat. was v neurodivergent kid coded #no hate to anyone saying that last point btw these r all just opinions #thinking about last ep wilma & digby being like ‘you’re a great barbarian. you’re so great at it. but look at what you made!!!’ like.#they would never mean it like that. but when you only understand half of your son he is going to prioritize the half you do.

yes girl! strip away all that nuance!!! an adult in teaching position took a student's academic pathway change personally and refused to help them out of judgement for the way said student expressed themselves!!! the student was then forced to undertake an amount of school work that is physically impossible to complete without sacrificing mental health, sleep, and personal relationships!!!

oh, whats this? the stress said student experienced from this inadvertently lead to a moment of emotional development that adult in teaching position actually approved of? it was all worth it then!! the adult had the right idea the whole time!!! the ends, famously, always justify the means.

extreme academic stress and presure being a good, justifiable thing to force on to children is definitely, absolutely the meaning of this season of popular actual play dnd show, dimension 20.

So Gorthulax and Porter have gotta be buddies, right?

Like physically, the only one that can physically match them would have to be either a pit fiend or a legendary level Barbarian/Paladin. If Porter wants an arm wrestle, its one of his students or its Gorthalax. Gorthalax wants to test out some bloodrush plays before practice? Shit dog, Porter is probably down.

And you just KNOW that Porter is like “Hey man, your daughter? I respect her and her craft. She epitomizes what it means to be a Barbarian and to truly Rage.” And Gorthalax would be SO HYPE to hear that. Like hell yeah she is, who needs the armor of pride when she has the Armor of Rage for an option?

Concept: Gorgug learns Adaine's Furious Fists from Adaine and Ayda as a freebie. The next time Porter gets on his back about his rage and how artificing isn't optimal for a barbarian, he just casts a full-on wizard spell and breaks a desk in half. He puts it back together again because he didn't really mean to break the desk, he just wanted to try out his wizard friends' cool spell. Porter has an existential crisis about just how many of Gorgug's friends are potential secret barbarians.

Not that I'm a Porter fan particularly but it's truly unhinged to assume he's this evil mastermind trying to manipulate Fig to raise a dead god and destroy cassandra when the much simpler explanation, that's actually supported by his actions, is that he's a fucking teacher and is trying to get his student not to pledge her life to something she doesn't really believe in

This realization hit me like a free-falling elevator and I think it has irreversibly rewired my brain

I am a Medication Pact Warlock, and that has made a huge difference in my life, learning how to gain proper autonomy and a meaningful adult life. But I've also neglected my ability to really strengthen my important relationships. I've had a couple of very abusive relationships (one family, one work) that left some very painful scars, but I'm not going to keep hiding from who I am and what I'm good at, and what joy I can bring to other peoples' lives.

And of course! Sliding in there like it's nothing, just dropping a piece of profound psychology, and hitting my brain like a hammer:

"There is no agreement we are more likely to break than one we have made with ourselves."

You can't give that out for free man therapists charge hundreds of dollars an hour to give out truths like that.
