Art School Girlfriend / A place to die
Polly Mackey veöffentlicht seit 2017 unter dem Alter Ego Art School Girlfriend (ASG) angenehme Downtempo LoFi Electronica mit Pop-Bezug. Erstmals aufgefallen ist mir ASG allerdings erst dieser Tage mit dem kürzlich veröffentlichten A place to die. Mit A place to die liegt Polly Mackey nicht nur stimmlich ganz dicht am grandiosen Comeback von Everything but the girl Nothing left to lose.
The Japanese House Live Preview: 4/29, Bottom Lounge, Chicago
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Though I am in a loving relationship, it’s historically not easy for me to fall in love. It’s easy for Amber Bain, and listening to Good At Falling, her highly anticipated debut album as The Japanese House, I remember what it’s like at the beginning. Though she sings from the point of view of someone, in her words, “surviving” falling out of love (with singer-songwriter Marika Hackman), she’s able to tackle love in all of its peaks, valleys, and complexities, including its effects on one’s perception of self and of life.
Take the dreamy melancholy pop of “Maybe You’re the Reason”, where Bain’s at first realizing that “apathy’s a funny feeling” but then dives into a relationship: “I turned my gaze to the ceiling / Thanked a God I don’t believe in / For the scene outside,” she beams, guitars buzzing like spring. According to "Worms”, she’s “only a day old” but “knows what love is.” Problem is, she defines her self-worth based on others. “I follow my girl till I find myself a sense of direction,” she sings on “Follow My Girl”, originally taken from the project of her bandmate but successfully appropriated to her story. “She makes me wonder what I’m doing,” Bain sings of Hackman on “f a r a w a y”.
Co-produced with BJ Burton and George Daniel of The 1975, Good At Falling is big but intimate, the clattering percussion and dreaminess of the music lightening the blow of the lyrics and tampering the emotions of the songs to help Bain toe the line between expressive and maudlin. Bain is blunt on “We Talk all the Time”--“We don’t fuck anymore,” she laments about her relationship with Hackman--in contrast with the haze of the instrumentation. “You Seemed so Happy”’s title references the worst thing you can say to a depressed, anxiety-ridden person, but Bain carries on with folktronica strumming and a charging rock beat. “somethingfartoogoodtofeel” was recorded in her bedroom, written about the day a friend died, consisting of warped strings and live drums and odd time signatures--Bain’s admitting the turmoil the song brings up, as she listens to it the least of all songs on the record. And opener “went to meet her (intro)” combines auto-tuned vocals with maximalist beats; little would you know the song’s about Bain going to see a friend who was physically assaulted.
Overall, Good At Falling is imperfect but striking because of it, the style not cohesive but effectively emblematic of a story that’s not linear and wavering in terms of mood, too. It’s not entirely physical; the songs are catchy, and you can dance to them, but they have an out of body quality. Bain describes “watching myself go wild” on “Wild”, a song written when she was 17 about having tantrums when she was younger, her vocals modulated atop shimmering synths. It’s the sound of looking back on someone you once were, cringing at the bad parts and perhaps subconsciously hiding the good. In contrast, with her former relationship, Bain sings not with regret or self-hatred but self-awareness and empathy. Situations like the one on “Everybody Hates Me” will always come up for all of us. (“She’s sleeping on the sofa / It’s like she doesn’t know that I exist,” Bain panics.) Where she ends the album, though, is the heartbreaking “I Saw You in a Dream”, also about her friend that had passed away. An acoustic version of the same song from an earlier EP, it’s more effective and simple at getting the point across: Life hurts, friends and lovers come and go, and sometimes you just need to reflect.

george mackey is the fancast for grant, im honestly not sure if he exists in canon or just in fics haha. but i have seen a bunch of tiktoks about him
this is the funniest thing i cant- the way there’s literally nothing when you google search it even if you add harry potter because then it just comes up with polly chapman

Even though Art School Girlfriend’s Distance (Blank) has been out since last fall, we’re incredibly happy to have come across it belatedly. It’s a dark whirring, pensive throbbing episode of trip hop/electronica meets art rock bewitchment from the Welsh artist, much like teeming combination of Beach House, Daughter, and Portishead. The track comes off of her last EP, Into The Blue Hour, out on Wolf Tone and streaming on Spotify, here. Another track from the EP that we find ourselves much mesmerized by is Moon, which you can stream below. Most recently, Art School Girlfriend dropped a live video for her song An Uncomfortable Month, shot at St Pancras Old Church. Watch below. You can certainly count us in as new fans of Polly Mackey, the brilliant mind behind this shadowy and heady music.

Art School Girlfriend shares new single ‘Is it Light Where You Are’
London-based producer, multi-instrumental musician and vocalist Art School Girlfriend shares her new single ‘Is It Light Where You Are’. Her album of the same name will be released on September 10 via Fiction Records.
“This is probably my favourite track I’ve ever released,” writes Art School Girlfriend’s Polly Mackey. “The song wrote itself really quickly; it felt like I was chasing it. It’s based around a phone conversation with someone I was trying to get over, someone who was in a different place to me both mentally and physically. The title ‘Is It Light Where You Are’ has a double meaning: obviously time zones, but also, my world felt quite dark to me at that point and I was trying to make it light.”
Chronicling a year of seismic change for Mackey, her debut album is torn straight from the pages of her 2019 diary. Following ‘In The Middle’ and ‘Softer Side’, the album’s title track is the third single to be shared ahead of the album’s full release.
