Making Sense of Terms Around the Climate Change Debate
Climate change is one of the most significant contemporary issues for human societies. Barely any issues are as significant as climate change in today’s world. Sure, there has been a COVID pandemic, there is also war in Ukraine, and then there is a global economic recession, along with all the communal upheaval across the globe, mediated by inequalities and poor living conditions. Some (like Adam…

Climate anxiety means different things to different income groups. At the bottom, it means fear of heat and floods. At the top, it means fear of increasingly desperate people. Billionaires often live in protective bubbles maintained at a considerable cost in dollars and emissions. Some are preparing for “the event”, with plans for doomsday bunkers in New Zealand, Nevada and other remote areas. Others blast off the planet in private rockets and talk of colonising space. Instead of making every effort to reduce emissions, the rich increase their carbon footprint by putting more distance between themselves and the masses. The Oxfam report reveals that the decision-making classes who will dominate at Cop28 – senior politicians including US senators, British ministers and European commissioners – are also in the top 1% of income earners. Corporate CEOs, whose lobbyists also flock to Cop summits, are often wealthier and more heavily invested in carbon assets. Boardroom share options and bonus structures have created an incentive for oil company executives to resist climate action. Instead, they have successfully pushed for expansion of fossil fuel production. Dario Kenner, the author of Carbon Inequality, has identified what he calls a “polluter elite”: anyone with a net worth over $1m who reinforces the use of fossil fuel technologies through their high carbon consumption, investments in polluting companies and, most importantly, political influence. “The polluter elite have blocked an alternative history where the destruction of extreme weather events and air pollution could have been reduced,” he told the Guardian. The international climate negotiating process has failed to keep pace with the growing power of the super-rich. Thirty-one years ago, when the world first came together to tackle climate and biodiversity problems at the Rio de Janeiro Earth summit, there was optimism for a solution on behalf of billions of humans and the countless other forms of life on Earth. Since then, the opposite has happened. Governments remain deeply divided, 60% more emissions are being pumped into the atmosphere and more money, carbon and power is being concentrated in ever fewer hands. The solution to all this is complex but also very simple. Many believe that the key lies in politicians wresting back control of the climate issue with strong legislation and policy. Oxfam is calling for a wealth tax, and a windfall tax on corporations based on the “polluter pays” principle, placing the highest burden on those most responsible and most able to pay. “We need a political discourse that is class conscious, that recognises that the rich and capitalism are the major drivers of the climate crisis,” said Jason Hickel, an economic anthropologist at the London School of Economics and the author of The Divide: A Brief Guide to Global Inequality and its Solutions. “This is about bringing production – and provisioning systems and energy systems – under democratic control.”

I have been seeing a lot of people recently on Tumblr go 0_o upon the wave of antisemitism that is flooding Europe, the USA and the Internet recently. The reason they are shocked by this, however, is not because of the antisemitism itself... But because they see it comes from "the left". And this turns out to be a shock for them, because they have a hard time understanding how people on the "left-wing" of the political spectrum could end up being VERY antisemitic, as antisemitism was - even before the Nazi party was created - typically associated to the extreme-right and to the right-wing part of the political spectrum.
Except that... when you have been paying attentions to little details and some history lessons, it comes to no surprise at all. The extreme-left (because we have to say things as they are, the current wave of antisemitism is partially born from the extreme-left) is basically the twin of the extreme-right. And I am not just speaking of the fact antisemitism exists as a principle beyond any political party and any religion (antisemitism has been carried on throughout History by the left, the right, by apolitics, by Christians, by Muslims, by basically everyone that is not Jewish).
There was a French comedy movie that is talked about a lot - because it is a movie that never got to be made. It is a movie called "Le Crocodile", "The Crocodile". One of the reasons this unmade movie is so famous is because it was planned to be the "final" movie of Louis de Funès, considered to this day one of the greatest French actors and a monument of French humor. Louis de Funès' archetypal character, his "type-casting", was as a greedy, tyrannical, wrathful and petty, but ultimately ridiculous and sympathetic, middle-management type of guy, an ambitious, vain and cowardly person in a position of power that abused of it, but ultimately ended up either humbled by the story/events/other characters, or had his good side come out in the end. He was an antisemitic factory owner who ended up learning how to love and appreciate the Jewish community ; he was a tyrannical maestro who ended up forced to work for the Resistance during World War II ; he was a scheming, pollution-endorsing mayor who ended up forced to abandon everything because he was bested by his wife ; he was an abusive and criminal minister that kept knowing disgrace after disgrace, and ended up doing heroic deeds but just because the villains of the story were preventing him from doing his own political conspiracy... And "Le Crocodile" was supposed to be the culmination of these specific roles, as de Funès was to play a dictator losing his power during a revolution.
Inspired by Charlie Chaplin's own take on dictatorship, this movie was supposed to depict Louis de Funès as a Pinochet-caricature, "Crochet", an extreme-right dictator in an imaginary country. After a series of adventures, the dictator ended up overthrown by a rival and sent to prison. But his cunning and scheming knowing no bounds, he ended up going back to power... by shifting to the left-wing of the political spectrum, joining with left-oriented political activist, overthrowing his replacement, destroying his own old extreme-right government, to replace it by a new, left-revolutionnary government... That quickly became an extreme-left dictatorship led, once again by Crochet. And this was supposed to be the final, bitter joke of the movie: the beginning and ending of the story were supposed to be identical, because despite the political goals and vocabulary having changed, the dictatorship Crochet had rebuilt in the extreme-left was in all identical to his extreme-right dictatorship.
The movie was never made, unfortunately, due to Louis de Funès passing before shooting could begin. But the same message can be found in the classics of a fiction genre that is much more well-known by English audience: dystopia. What defined the "classical" dystopias, born during the height of the Cold War? From George Orwell's "1984" to Harlan Ellison "I have no mouth and I must scream", there is always this recurring motif of "You had various super-powers with opposing ideologies that waged war against each other... and yet now, we can't actually distinguish these opposite powers from one another, because they are doing the exact same thing and their ideologies end up reaching the same goals and the same points." This was a reaction to the dead-end of the Cold War, where the extremes of the Americanized, capitalist, "Western" block and of the Sovietized, communist "Eastern" block matched each other, resulting in the two looking identical in the eyes of many countries and people stuck in the middle of the two... But the lesson can be applied to any other situation, because it contains one core, fundamental truth people seem to have forgotten about today. Any extreme is bad ; and any good thing, taken to an extreme, will be horrible.
Take Christianity! A religion built on love and peace, and giving your food to the poor and offering the other cheek when you are slapped and forgiving those that betray you... And we ended up with the fucking Inquisition, and the witch hunts, and the religious wars, and many more atrocities, all in the name of "love and peace".
I digress here but honestly I want to get all of this out while I can, so that I have no more to say.
So yes, the "left" as people learned to know it today is based on good principles. (I personally hate reducing things to the "left" or the "right" when it comes to social matter, because for example defending people's right to have their own sexual orientation respected and recognized is not a political question, it is a human question... But since Tumblr users are still in shock unable to understand why the "left could be bad", and since we are facing extreme-left movements, I'll stick to this binary system for now). Yes, the left is the "side of the people" that works on helping the masses against the elite ; yes the left is the side of the "minorities" against "oppresors", yes the left has fought for excellent and needed things like feminism and acceptance and anti-racism... All good principles. And all principles that are turned into tools of hatred and oppression by the extreme-left.
I don't think I need to explain why the extreme-right is bad - in general people on Tumblr are very aware of it, and history has proven us what happens when the extreme-right rises up. Racism, discrimination, xenophobia, homophobia, religious fanaticism... All things typical of the extreme-right, no need to go further. But a lot of people seem to have a hard time wrapping their head around the system and the processes that lead to the "left" becoming the "extreme-left", and why the extreme-left can end up mirroring the extreme-right.
But the answer is very simple. It is this logic as old as time of "reverse bullying". When the bullied decided to take their revenge on the bully by bullying it in return, the bullied becomes the bully, and it does not solve anything since it just reverses the situation. Or more generally speaking: when the defense, love and acceptance of a minority/victim/side becomes hatred and rejection of the majority/bully/other side, there is an open gateway for BAD things. And the wave of antisemitism currently going on is a perfect representation of that.
I personally strongly disliked the extreme-left long before the whole Hamas-Israel situation. I hated the extreme-left because, especially in France, the extreme-left had the worst possible thing when it came to anti-intellectualism. Extreme-left politicians and activists have explicitely spoken against or attacked things such as higher education or any kind of school beyond high school, as well as things such as classical literature or old books. There is this "populist" idea behind the extreme-left, that, as "men/women of the people", as the "voice of the masses", they need to opposite, shit on and destroy anything seen or deemed as an "elite". But the "elite" isn't just your old rich white guy, oh no! The elite also means stuff seen as the intellectual elite. For example, classics of literature. Authors of older generations. And if you wonder how bad it can be: when during the last presidential elections the candidate for the extreme-left was not elected, its young supporters went to the university of the Sorbonne and trashed it. They destroyed computers, destroyed rare books within the university's library, they destroyed the papers and works of the students and teachers in there... Because they were angry at their candidate not being elected. And an university as old and as famous as the Sorbonne, THE French university, was thus seen as the "enemy" and as a symbol of what opposed the access of their candidate to the presidential position. And the result was... destroying books. Yes, bookburners can be as much from the right as from the left. Quite literaly some times.
There was this very hilarious but very very sad thing that happened in French Canada some years ago... There was this group of Canadians (white and Christians if I recall well) that wanted to show an open support and public excuses for how the Catholic Church, how the Canadian government and how white settlers treated the people of the First Nations and the discrimination they had to face. Nice, isn't it? The intention is good, public manifestations recognizing this dark side of the history is good, doing events to move forward is good, right? Except... we are talking about French-Canadians here. French-Canadian-Christians, who are... really something. So what did they do, to show their support to the First Nations? Give back some of their land? Remove some of the horrible laws against them? Recognize them more rights? NO! THEY BURNED BOOKS! Sounds like a joke? It is not. To show their support, what they did was take various comic-books and children books from the early-to-mid 20th century with representations of Native-Americans considered "offensive", and they burned them in a great bonfire. They literaly did... book-burning. To fight colonization and racism. A perfect example of how fucked up and warped it can all be.
This incident above is just one of the many incidents that I have collected across the years and that illustrated what I called the "bad woke". Now... when designating those ridiculous and dangerous excesses, I hate to just say "woke". Because the root of the "woke" ideas are good! Good and positive things: defend trans-people, defend gay people, encourage diversity and body-positivity and fight against racism and religious discrimination. These things are good! And too many people who are just homophobic, transphobic, racist or any other of fucked up jerk use "woke" as an insult and as a derogatory term for just being a normal uman being. So I do not like using "woke" alone to designate the fucked-up extremes the polar opposite side can ledn itself to. But... I have to recognize that there is a bad, extreme and toxic form of "wokeness", and until I can find a better term to designate this phenomenon, I will use the term "bad woke". And the process, the thought-system, the workings of the "bad woke" are the exact sames behind the extreme-left, and the sames that led to this wave of antisemitism drowning the Internet.
I evoked an incident that took place in France again years ago, which was more of an unthought, stupid mistake than an actual malicious intent, but showed how a slight twist can turn "good" from "bad". A "safe place" had been created somewhere, for women and trans people to be able to gather without any presence of men or non-trans people. So far so good, but the twist of the story is that when creating this space the rules for it were too summarized and too-shortened up, and so the creators of the space said this and plastered this on the walls: "Only women and trans people allowed. No men allowed." Do you see the logical problem? What about trans men? Trans men literaly didn't know what to do, since "trans" people were accepted and this space was built for them... and yet "men" as a whole were forbidden. Meaning if a trans man entered the space, they had to somehow not be recognized as a man, but as rather something closer to a woman?
This truly was just a stupid mistake by people who had not thought about it - but it actually shows the process by which defending one minority or an oppressed group can end up harming or hunting another minority/oppressed group. We are all aware of what happened when feminists and the feminism fight to defend women or provide them equal rights, ended up drifting into transphobia and hate on trans women for not being "real women". It is all a messy bag of snakes.
And so, what is the link to the antisemitism today? What does all this proves when it comes to the extreme-left and the Jews? Well, easy.
Why is the extreme-left antisemitic? Because one of the core of the extreme-left is, as I said, to fight against the "elite". Be it a social, cultural, ethnic or political elite, the "left" defined itself mostly as "the mass against the elite, the many against the few". This is mixed with the left fighting against racism, and also fighting against things such as colonization. Again, all very good things. But let's place ourselves in the mind of an antisemitic extreme-leftist. What happens? Why would I come after the Jews, who themselves are known to be an oppressed and discriminated against minority, in both ethnic and religious terms? Why would the extreme-left decide to make a prey out of the people the extreme-right was known to hunt?
Because they are seen as the "elite". We know that extreme-left groups feed into the same antisemitic delusions and conspiracy theories that the Jews are the secret elite controlling the world. Even if they are not hardcore conspiracists, the extreme-left movements have several Jewish stereotypes widespread among them - to take France, just a recent study showed that a lot of people who identified on the left-wing also recognized that Jews were wealthier than regular French people, that they had too much presence in finances, and too much presence in media. The extreme-left searches for a form of elite to fight against and shit upon and hate with all of its might - and when the antisemitic cliches present the Jews as this elite, as some sort of secret powerful cabal controlling the finances and the media and being wealthy and friends with politicians, the extreme-left will latch onto these ideas as if truth, because they hate any form of elite, no matter if the elite actually exists or not. It is no surprise that the same conspiracy cliches about "satanic cults murdering babies and drinking human blood" are used for both the Jews (supposedly the shadow elite) and the actual rich and wealthy, white WASPs family of the USA. Same conspiracy theory, different people.
Of course, the Hamas-Israel war has been what sparked the fire. Because Israel is seen as a colonizer, the Jews as a whole are identifying with other colonizing countries and historical colonizing empires. Because Israel currently has a right-wing/extreme-right government, the Jews are a whole are seen as being from the extreme-right. Because of the retaliation against the Hamas attacks upon Gaza are just a massive unleashing of destruction causing massive deaths and a humanitarian crisis, Jews are a whole are seen as being genocide-endorcers. With people even going as far as to say they became as bad as Nazis or worse, or that they are causing a new Holocaust - the Jewish history being literaly returned against them. Everything that surrounds the Hamas-Israel war needs a post of its own because we have EVERYTHING all at once. We have people who refuse to understand a conflict is not black and white, and that in this war there is no good guy or bad guy, just people suffering on both sides and a lot of deaths and horrors on both sides. We have people who generalize Israel as being somehow the embodiment of all the Jews in the world, and consider Jews from Africa or Europe or America to be responsible for Israel's actions - and who disguise antisemitism as "anti-zionism". We have people who, in their effort to paint Israel as the sole villain, will literaly treat the Hamas as heroes, and ignore for example the fact that they are a terrorist organization, that they actually attacked Israel in terrorist attacks (people even deny the Hamas attacks even happened, the same way you have negationists of the Holocaust), or that they are using the people of Gaza as meat-shield for Israel attacks, or that they have extremely fanatical and racist ideologies based on a genocide of Jews as a whole and the destruction of the USA. And the list goes on and on and this is such a mess...
But here is the thing... The Hamas attacks on Israel and Israel's retaliation were just the spark. Meaning there was fuel before that. And I already started explaining why. The extreme-left had strong latent antisemitic feelings which were widespread, but since not openly hostile or aggressive were not much spotted. (Unlike for example fanatical extreme-right Christians which are very loud and open about their hatred of Jews and parade Jewish caricatures around on signs). And while I evoked before the warped belief that the Jews are somehow an "elite", hence the discrimination, there is another factor that must be taken nto account... What I call the "pick-and-choose your minority" game.
To take for example extreme-left groups in France - but I think it works in other countries too. They are very open about defending minorities and people of color, and they have been strongly standing by the side of black people and Arab people and Muslim people and people from African descent. So far, so good... But the thing is that when you are careful, you see that they do nothing about or never speak about other minorities. For example the Jews, but also Asian people. Not a word, not a peep. And we know there is discrimination in France against them - we already have studies that proved that in universities (which, surprise, are mostly left-leaning) a "common" antisemitism was very widespread, not physical, but taking the form of discriminatory joke, the common use of slurs and other verbal abuse. But we also had a wave of discrimination against people of Asian ethnicites (mostly people of Chinese culture or descent, but given the perpetrators were racist I doubt they'd make a difference between China, Japan or Korea). There was a wave some years ago of brutal street-agressions and mugging and theft targeting Chinese women and Chinese elders (or Chinese-looking people). And the thieves and muggers, once caught, gave the same excuse antisemitic thieves gave: "Everybody knows they have money."
But the thing is that while extreme-left groups are very vocal and very violent when it comes to islamophobia or racism against black people... they are very quiet and discreet when it comes to antisemitic or discrimination against Asian people. (Or at least they were, because since their antisemitism was revealed, they have been very vocal about Jewish people on media, to defend themselves). And this little phenomenon, that mostly went unnoticed and unanalyzed by media, reflects a larger concept that was found everywhere - and in fact very present on the Internet - and that imbues the extreme-left. And this perverse concept is "Some minorities are real minorities. Others are not. Some people are real POCs. Others are not."
To be clear: many people consider that Jews or Asians are not supposed to be minorities, couldn't be oppressed and shouldn't be defended as much as "actual" people of colors or "true" minorities". Because, in their words, these ethnicities are "too white", or "too close to white people". They are "model minorities", they were "integrated", they are seen as coming from either "powerful" nations ranked the same as former colonialist powers (Japan, China), either from "sheltered" and "untouchable" areas (the massive Jewish acceptance and defense after WWII). And the result of these considerations is that the extreme-left treat these groups as just "shades of White people", and they get conflated with things such as "those racist WASPs folks" or "the dominant all-white Christian xenophobes". And then all the stereotypes are thrown at them - the Jews, just like Asians, have supposedly too much influence on politics, too much presence in media, they are naturally wealthier than regular people, they are naturally less discriminated and less hated than others... And in turn, the extreme-left decides "We will not speak of them. We will not fight for them or stand up for them because they do not need it, because they are too close to the elite, because they are too close to our enemies. We'll focus on more "important" people."
And thus, from the noble cause of defending oppressed and discriminated minorities that knew a long history of racism and persecution... we go perpetuating the discrimination and erasure of OTHER minorities and ethnicities that had a long history of racism and persecution. It is... like some sort of perverse "discrimination contest" where people somehow "deserve" to be defend against discriminations and others do not? Some sort of fucked-up ethnic hierarchy that in the end is literaly no different from the same ethnic hierarchies racists of the extreme-right put in place to justify their hatred.
And if the slightest event produces a spark strong enough to set the fuel ablaze... the extreme-left goes from ignoring and passive discrimination to active discrimination. As we can see today by the left of extreme-left antisemitism.
I don't think I have anything else to say? This post is very long, but I got to say everything I had to say, and I am quite glad I did. I wrote it all in one go, so there might be typos, but I do not think I can sum up my words anymore than that.

Pollution Powers AU - Enrollment
I've been working on this for a while now. It's been going rather slowly, as I've been Going Through It in my personal life and haven't had much writing juice in me. But it's finally done! So, uh, enjoy Stan arriving at the Gravity Falls School for Contaminated Youth in my Pollution Powers AU!
———————————————————————————————————–
Stan got out of the cab.  He turned around, grabbed his suitcase and duffle bag, and closed the door.
“So, uh, how much do I owe-” he started, reaching for his wallet.  Before he could finish the question, the cab peeled away, speeding down the road and kicking up clouds of dust in its wake.  Stan watched the cab quickly disappear into the distance, his heart in his throat.  Normally, he’d be glad to get a free cab ride.  But that was when he successfully talked his way out of paying the fare.
Shake it off, Stan.  Shake it off.  The day’s not even close to over yet.  Stan slung his duffle bag over one shoulder and grabbed his suitcase.  He slowly began the walk down the dirt road, watching his feet as it changed to fresh pavement.  The trees lining the road cleared to reveal the reason for the cab driver’s fear: the Gravity Falls School for Contaminated Youth.  Stan paused to look up at the four-story mansion.  It was built of carved dark brown stone not yet well-weathered by the elements.  If it had been made of wood or a lighter stone, it might have felt welcoming, but as it was, it seemed to loom over the large, empty front yard.  Stan dug out the pamphlet his parents had shoved into his hands just before he boarded the plane.  It was wrinkled from being carelessly stuffed into his back pocket.  He smoothed it out to read it better.
“The Gravity Falls School for Contaminated Youth was built less than ten years ago to serve the needs of the growing contaminated population.  When intervention is done early, those who are contaminated can become valuable members of society.  This is the core principle upon which the GFSCY was founded.  Our students not only receive the finest education possible, but also learn control of their contamination and valuable life skills such as performance, networking, and etiquette.  The Northwest Family proudly and happily funds all operations of this free boarding school institution, allowing contaminated youth from across the country to attend year-round regardless of economic status.”
Stan stared at the last sentence.
Even if there was another place they could send me, it probably woulda had at least a tuition fee.  He clenched the pamphlet in his hands, the force tearing the paper.  No matter what, I was gonna end up here.  A familiar pins and needles sensation, like a part of his body falling asleep, began in his fingertips.  The pamphlet slipped in his grasp as slick black oil slowly spread down his fingers to his hands.
“Shit.”  Stan closed his eyes and concentrated.  It took longer than he’d like, but gradually, the tingling faded.  He opened his eyes.  His hands were back to normal, though the pamphlet was covered in smears of oil.  Stan tossed the pamphlet to the ground and began following the brick path that split off from the road and led to the mansion’s front door.  If he could have, he would have slept either during the flight to Oregon or the bus ride to Gravity Falls.  But he couldn’t risk turning to oil in a confined space, surrounded by strangers.  So he spent the entire trip awake and focused on maintaining his normal form.
I’m so fucking beat.  Stan rubbed his eyes.  Maybe I can take a nap after I settle in.  He knocked on the door.  After a brief moment, it opened, revealing a tall, thin man in a snazzy uniform.  Stan stared at him.  Does this place have a butler?
“How may I help you, sir?” the butler asked.
“Uh.  I’m supposed to enroll in the school?  My parents called…”
                 “Your name?”
                 “Stanley Pines.”
“Ah, yes.  The master told me to expect you today.  I will take you to him.”  The butler stood to the side.  “Please, come in.  Wipe your shoes.”
The master?  Disregarding the mat, Stan walked into the building.  He gaped at the massive foyer, lit with a splendid chandelier.  What the hell kinda rich person place is this?  Unease slowly built in his gut.  Until that point, he’d been holding out hope that the school was being run by a committee or nonprofit organization.  No rich person would start a school for contaminated kids outta the goodness of their heart.  Stan followed the butler down a hallway branching off from the foyer.  There’s gotta be something off about this place.
Despite the foreboding outwards appearance of the mansion and intimidating foyer, the rest of the interior was warm and welcoming, if stuffy and fancy in the way Stan would expect from a rich family.  The stone floor was covered with large, dark red rugs.  Sconces and artsy pictures of teenagers hung on the walls.  Stan paused briefly to look at one of the photos.  His eyes widened.  Most of the teenagers looked like regular prep school students, but one had fully black eyes, gills, and fins.
“Mr. Pines?” the butler, already at the end of the hall, asked primly.  Stan quickly caught up with him.  The butler knocked on a door with a plaque reading “Auldman Northwest”.
“Yes?” a voice asked from within the room.
“Master, Mr. Stanley Pines has arrived.”
“Excellent.  You may let him in.”  The butler opened the door, revealing a brown-haired man in a suit sitting behind a large, wooden desk.  The man smiled at Stan.  The smile failed to reach his eyes.  “Jean-Luc, you may bring his items to his quarters while I learn more about this young man.”  The butler took Stan’s suitcase and duffle bag and backed out of the office, closing the door on his way.  “My name is Auldman Northwest.  I am the school’s founder, dean, and general head of administration.”  Stan swallowed.  “Mr. Pines, take a seat.”  He gestured to a chair across from the desk.  Stan hesitantly sat in it.  Auldman opened a drawer in his desk and pulled out a manila folder, flipping it open.  “Your parents told me about your particular condition when they were enrolling you, but I would like to hear it in your own words.”
“Um, okay.”  Stan shifted in the chair hesitantly.  “Uh, at school a month ago, outta nowhere, my body turned into oil.”  Auldman raised an eyebrow at him.  “…That’s it.”
“A man of few words, I see.”  Auldman smiled again, but once more it didn’t reach his eyes.  “You’re far from the first youth here that has been reluctant to speak with me.  I have practice getting what I need.”
                 That sounds…bad.
“What do you mean by ‘oil’?” Auldman asked.
“Uh.  Oil?  Black.  The kind of stuff that makes those rainbow puddles in the parking lot.”
“Ah.  Petroleum.  Do you turn into a full liquid?”
“No.  I’m solid.  But sorta liquid.  It’s, uh, I think the best way I can describe it is like peanut butter.”  Stan scratched his head.  “If you turn a jar of peanut butter on its side, it’s gonna spill out eventually, but it’s still solid.  I do drip liquid oil a bit, though.”
“Interesting.”  Auldman made a note on the top page in the folder.  “When contamination manifests, it is shown in the eyes.  How did your eyes change?”  Stan’s skin crawled at the way Auldman said “contamination”, but he tried to ignore it.
“My eyes got darker.  They weren’t black before, they were brown.  And, uh, my twin, he claims that when the light hits them right, they shine a rainbow or something.”  Auldman frowned.
                 “You have a twin?”
                 “Twin brother.”
                 “And he’s not contaminated?”
                 “No?”
“Very interesting,” Auldman murmured.  He made another note.  “Other than in extraordinarily rare circumstances, contamination occurs as the result of exposure to some form of toxin or pollutant.  This exposure occurs during childhood.  Do you have an idea of what that exposure might have been?”  A memory tucked in the back of Stan’s mind suddenly wriggled free.
“Actually, yeah.  When I was a kid, my mom took me and my twin to the beach after a storm.  I decided to play in some sand that had a buncha oil in it.  But when I picked the sand up, it- it was like my body drank the oil from it.  It just got sucked into my skin.  I was fine after and didn’t even have to wash anything off, so I just sorta assumed I imagined it.”
“That sounds like a traditional exposure.  The pollutant enters the body, often through the skin, but leaves no physical evidence in the moment.  No, the evidence shows years later.”  Auldman made a few more notes.  “You’ll be meeting with one of our physicians later today and get a full physical, but I would like to see your ‘oil form’ before I send you to get settled in your room.”
“Are you sure?”  Stan looked around at the very nice office, in particular at the expensive-looking carpet.  “It’s pretty messy.”
“I have a cleaning staff,” Auldman said dismissively.
“All right, but you asked,” Stan muttered.  He closed his eyes and relaxed.  The pins and needles feeling he had fought back earlier returned in full force, starting in his fingertips, spreading up his arms, and, once it reached his chest, radiating out to the rest of his body.  After it finished spreading, the tingling slowly faded into a dull numbness.  Stan opened his eyes.  Colors were muted in his oil form, but his vision wasn’t otherwise impacted.  As such, he saw clearly the way Auldman’s lip curled in disgust for a brief moment, before his expression returned to something more neutral.
“Well, you certainly do belong at this school, Mr. Pines,” Auldman said.  He cleared his throat.  “You may return to your human form.  The less mess for my staff to clean, the better.”  Sure enough, oil was dripping from Stan’s exposed skin onto the carpet.
“Got it,” Stan mumbled.  Speaking was more difficult in oil form; the words came out slurred and quieter than he intended.  He concentrated.  The numbness faded as the oil vanished from his skin.  Tension Stan hadn’t noticed before left Auldman’s shoulders.  Auldman rang a bell.  As though magically summoned, the butler from before opened the door to poke his head in.
“Have someone escort Mr. Pines to his room.  I’m sure his trip was tiring.  He could use some time to settle in before he meets with the physician and tailor.”
“Yes, master,” the butler said crisply.  He disappeared again.  Stan frowned at Auldman.
                 “Physician and tailor?”
“All students have an initial physical exam upon enrollment.  Because each contaminated individual has a unique form of biology, we must know what their general healthy state looks like to catch illnesses, injuries, or deficiencies.  Both your human form and oil form will be examined.”  Auldman smiled that insincere smile again.  “We understand that, as a teenager, you likely are uncomfortable with seeing a doctor on your own.  A nurse will accompany you to help with those nerves.”
Not what I was worried about, but whatever.
“And the tailor?” Stan asked.  Auldman raised an eyebrow.
“You will need multiple copies of the school uniform.  Provided free of charge, of course.”
                 “But-”
“It is non-negotiable,” Auldman said firmly.  Stan closed his mouth with a snap.  The door opened.  “Ah.  Jean-Luc.  Perfect timing.”  Auldman smiled one last time.  “Welcome to the Gravity Falls School for Contaminated Youth, Stanley Pines.”  Stan silently got up from the chair and left the office.  A teenage boy about his age and a bit taller than him was waiting in the hall with the butler.  He was wearing the uniform Stan had seen in the hallway photos earlier: a white shirt, black slacks, black dress shoes, and a green plaid tie.  His sandy blond hair was carefully styled and his reading glasses free of streaks.  Despite his otherwise clean and proper appearance, he had a large smear of mud on his left cheek.
“Mr. McGucket, please escort Mr. Pines to his room,” the butler said.  A bell rang inside Auldman’s office.  “Please excuse me.”  The butler disappeared into the office.  The boy smiled at Stan.  After the conversation with Auldman, Stan was relieved to see a genuine expression.
“The name’s Fiddleford McGucket, but most folks call m’ Fidds,” the boy chirped in a thick southern accent.  He held out a hand.  Stan shook it.
“Stanley Pines.  Stan.  You’ve got a bit of schmutz on your face.”
“If it looks like dirt, that’s just somethin’ that happens,” Fiddleford said, his voice sounding slightly strained.  “But thanks fer lettin’ me know.  Now, c’mon.  I’ll take ya to yer room.”  Fiddleford turned around and began to walk down the hall.  Stan followed.  “We should get to know each other!  I’ll start.  I grew up on a farm in Arkansas, near a small town called Gumption.  I’ve got five siblin’s.  Three older, two younger.  But I’m the only one what’s been contaminated.”
“Oh.  Uh…”  Stan rubbed the back of his neck.  “I’m from Glass Shard Beach, New Jersey.  I’ve got a twin brother and an older brother.  And…I’m the only contaminated one, too.”
“What a coincidence!  My younger siblin’s ‘re twins!”  Fiddleford beamed broadly at Stan.  “Do ya have any questions ‘bout the school yet?”
“One big one.”  They entered the foyer.  Fiddleford led Stan up an elegant staircase.  “The whole school uniform thing…”
“Oh, yer not gettin’ out of that,” Fiddleford said firmly.  “Especially if you’ve got a contamination what has some sort of impact on yer clothin’.”  Stan winced, thinking about his now thoroughly oil-stained wardrobe.  “I take it that’s the case fer you?”
                 “Unfortunately, yes.”
“Oof.”  Fiddleford sighed.  The staircase led them to a second-floor landing that opened into a large common area, inhabited by a few stray teenagers in school uniforms.  They glanced up at Fiddleford and Stan briefly before turning their attention back to what they were doing before.  “Well, even if it weren’t the case, you’d still need a uniform.  Folks like you ‘re actually the reason uniforms ‘re required.”  They turned left, down yet another hallway.  The doors they were now walking past had signs with two names.  A few were open, revealing teenage boys doing idle activities in their room.
                 “Whattaya mean?”
“The administration figured out pretty early on that some of the students would need special clothin’.  But they didn’t want cliques to form, with students what needed special clothes separatin’ from those what didn’t.  So’s they made uniforms a blanket requirement to keep that from happenin’.”  Fiddleford shrugged.  “Good intentions, at least.”
“I guess…”  Stan stuffed his hands into his pants pockets.  “I’m assuming the uniforms are enforced?”
“The entire dress code is.  Quite heavily, in fact.”  Fiddleford rolled his eyes.  “They tell us we get some leeway, since we can choose what color plaid we wear.  But that ain’t much customization, ‘specially when there’s only four colors to choose from.”  Stan nodded silently.  They came to a stop in front of a door with Stan’s name on the sign.  “Here we are!”
                 “Do I have a key or…”
                 “Nope!”
“So this place operates under the honor system.  Got it.”
“Oh, don’t worry.  The dress code ain’t the only rule what’s heavily enforced,” Fiddleford said solemnly.  He pushed open the door to Stan’s room.  “Welcome to yer new room!”  Stan stepped inside.  Fiddleford walked in as well.  The bedroom looked the way he’d expect a college dorm room to look.
Not that I’ll ever get a chance to stay in one of those.  There was a bunk bed, two desks, two dressers, two closets, and a large window that let in enough light to fill the room.  The butler had clearly already been by; Stan’s suitcase and duffle bag were sitting on the floor next to the bunk bed.  While it was bare of anything that would indicate a personality, the room was still nicer than the one Stan shared with Ford back in New Jersey.  Stan could tell with a quick glance that the furniture was of a higher quality than his parents could afford.  He ran a finger along the top of one of the desks.  A rich family paying for a whole mansion, filling it with good furniture, feeding and clothing a buncha teens?  Supposedly all outta the goodness of their hearts?  No.  There’s something fishy here.  A rank smell reached his nostrils.  He grimaced.  Literally.
“Ugh, what the hell is that?” Stan asked.  He looked around.  “Is the bathroom across the hall or something?  Maybe some backed up sewage?”  To his surprise, Fiddleford blushed.
                 “No, that’s me.”
“Did you step in dog shit?”
“No…”  Fiddleford shifted awkwardly.  “My contamination, it came from fertilizer.  So’s I, uh, I don’t tend to smell the best.  No matter how much I shower.”
“And that’s why you’ve got dirt on your face,” Stan said.  Fiddleford nodded.  Stan let out a low whistle.  “Sweet Moses, that fucking blows, man.”
“Oh, I know.”  Fiddleford sighed.  “It’s why I don’t got a roommate.  My odor’s manageable in a classroom, but in a bedroom, it gets to be too much.”
“Do I not have a roommate ‘cause of my…contamination?” Stan asked.  A slight chill ran down his spine at using the word “contamination” to refer to his oil form.
                 It feels…wrong, somehow.
“No.  You don’t got a roommate yet ‘cause there’s an odd number of male students right now.  Once another feller enrolls, if’n yer contaminations cooperate, that feller will be yer roommate.”
                 “Got it.”
“Welp, I best let ya settle in!” Fiddleford said, clapping his hands.  “I’ll come grab ya fer dinner!”  He left the room, closing the door behind him.  The horrible smell slowly faded.  Stan sighed and sat on the bottom bunk.
Might as well try to sneak in a nap.  He laid down, biting back his irritation at how comfortable the mattress was.  He stared up blankly at the top bunk.  Welcome to your new home, Stan.

SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS BAN ON FIRECRACKERS FOR A POLLUTION-FREE DIWALI: A LEGAL PERSPECTIVE
Tumblr media
The Supreme Court has announced that upholding the ban on the sale and use of firecrackers across the country.
The Supreme Court has announced that upholding the ban on the sale and use of firecrackers across the country has far-reaching implications, not only for public health and environmental protection but also for legal precedent and the interpretation of fundamental rights. The court’s ruling, which was first imposed in 2018, has been challenged by several petitioners, but the court has reaffirmed its position, citing the well-documented health and environmental hazards associated with fireworks. The court emphasized that the right to celebrate Diwali does not supersede the fundamental right to clean air and a healthy environment.
LEGAL STATUS QUO
It must be noted that bursting crackers lead to a violation of Fundamental rights along with the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981; The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986; and The Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules, 2000. regulations. The decision has significant legal implications, not only for the regulation of firecrackers but also for the interpretation of fundamental rights and the application of environmental protection laws. The court’s ruling sets a strong precedent for future cases involving conflicts between individual rights and environmental protection.
The decision also highlights the importance of scientific evidence in informing legal decisions. The court’s reliance on scientific studies on the health and environmental impacts of firecrackers demonstrates the importance of evidence-based policymaking.
Moreover, the court’s decision has far-reaching implications for environmental jurisprudence in India. The court’s recognition of the right to a clean environment as a fundamental right and its emphasis on the precautionary principle and polluter pays principle have strengthened the legal framework for environmental protection in the country.
The Supreme Court’s decision is a major victory for public health and environmental protection. Firecrackers are a major source of air pollution, particularly in urban areas. They release harmful pollutants such as particulate matter and sulfur dioxide, which can cause respiratory problems, heart disease, and other health problems.
In addition, firecrackers can cause noise pollution, which can disrupt sleep, increase stress levels, and even cause hearing loss. The Supreme Court’s decision will help to reduce air and noise pollution and improve the overall quality of life for millions of Indians.
CASE LAWS SUPPORTING THE BAN
The Supreme Court’s decision is grounded in a strong foundation of case law that has established the importance of environmental protection and the fundamental right to clean air. Key case laws supporting the ban include:
Arjun Gopal vs. Union of India (2018): In this landmark case, the Supreme Court recognized the right to a clean environment as a fundamental right under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. The court also emphasized the precautionary principle, which states that even in the absence of scientific certainty, if there is a risk of serious or irreversible harm to the environment, precautionary measures must be taken.
M.C. Mehta vs. Union of India (1987): This case established the principle of polluter pays, which holds that the polluter must bear the cost of pollution. The principle has been applied to various industries, including the firecracker industry.
Vellore Citizens Forum vs. Union of India (2011): In this case, the Supreme Court recognized the right to a healthy environment as a part of the right to life under Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. The court also emphasized the need for environmental impact assessments to prevent pollution.
BALANCING THE FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS AND ENVIRONMENTAL
The Supreme Court’s decision is also a significant development in the interpretation of fundamental rights. The court recognised that the right to celebrate Diwali is a fundamental right, but it is not absolute. The court held that the right to celebrate Diwali must be exercised in a manner that does not infringe upon the fundamental right to clean air and a healthy environment.
This decision is a reminder that all rights must be exercised in a responsible manner. The right to celebrate Diwali does not give individuals the right to harm the environment or the health of others. The Supreme Court’s decision is expected to have a significant impact on future cases involving conflicts between individual rights and environmental protection. The court’s ruling sets a strong precedent for future cases and will likely be cited in many future legal challenges.
The decision is also a reminder that the courts have a crucial role in protecting the environment. The courts can use their power to enforce environmental laws and regulations and to hold individuals and businesses accountable for their actions.
CONCLUSION
The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the ban on firecrackers is a landmark ruling that prioritizes public health and environmental protection while upholding fundamental rights. The decision is a testament to the court’s commitment to upholding the Constitution and ensuring the well-being of all citizens.
By upholding the ban, the court has sent a clear message that public health and environmental protection are paramount. The decision is expected to have a significant impact on air quality during Diwali, particularly in urban areas, and contribute to a healthier environment for all.

These days and these events are the best explanation and are the truest proof of the truth of the verses and hadiths that tell you the intensity of the hostility and anger that the hearts of the unbelievers and hypocrites store toward the believers! These verses and hadiths, which many of the people of this nation and its intellectuals were embarrassed by, and even some of those attributed to science were striving to interpret them and divert them from their clear meanings... Now now, you must truly say from the bottom of your heart: God and His Messenger have spoken the truth! They themselves tore up their own laws and covenants that they themselves had drawn up. They were not affected by the torn remains of children, nor by the bombing that hit hospitals, schools, and shelter centers. The killer did not hesitate to kill, and the spectators and supporters did not budge in support and support! They have the impudence, meanness, and lowliness of those who want to hold you accountable for what happened on October 7, or talk to you about civilians!! By God, if the resistance had guided missiles and deliberately targeted schools and hospitals, this would not have been an injustice or an assault. Rather, it would have been just and righteous retribution. If we were to step down for the sake of argument and accept that there are civilians among the Israelis at all, then the Israelis themselves would have demolished every principle of respect for civilians! In any case, the resistance knows what it does, what it wants, and what is better... But the important lesson is for us, for those who live all over the world... Let us get used to believing the words of our Lord and the words of our Prophet, let us get used to believing in Him and stopping before Him in contemplation... Let us get used to not being tempted by appearances. The friendliness, the bright faces, and the gentle language do not hide from us the reality of the crouching, angry monster that is seething with hatred and malice against Muslims! A short while ago, the Israeli bombing targeted the main generator of electricity for Al-Shifa Hospital (the largest hospital in Gaza), which was going to stop after hours because the fuel had already run out. After that, they targeted solar panels, which are the only source of electricity after the fuel ran out, and after that they targeted water tanks, in light of the scarcity that the Strip is suffering from. The spread of diseases due to water pollution! Thus, whoever did not die from the bombing died from hunger, thirst, cold, illness, lack of medicine, and the cessation of medical equipment!! We must preserve the “memory of hatred” and not forget these crimes, until God makes a promise soon... so that every criminal will pay the price he deserves! Then we leave the rest of the account to our children so that they can complete extracting the price from the rest of the criminals!! This is one of many moments in which believers in God and His Messenger win, and in which those who believe in humanity, peace, international law, and all these edible and destroyed idols fall!!

Environment & Natural Disasters
As we've all noticed with increasing alarm, natural disasters are occurring with more violence and regularity. The following organizations focus on responding to the climate crisis, protecting the planet, and helping with natural disaster relief.
For more information on donation methods and accepted currencies, please refer to our list of organizations page.
Clean Air Task Force
As we've seen for a long time now but especially this year with constant natural disasters and alarming news from all over the world, climate change is real and we need to do something about it. Over the past 25 years, CATF, a group of climate and energy experts who think outside the box to solve the climate crisis, has pushed for technology innovations, legal advocacy, research, and policy changes. Their goal is to achieve a zero-emissions, high-energy planet at an affordable cost.
Coalition for Rainforest Nations
Boasting a voluntary membership of over 50 rainforest nations, CORN provides a single voice to countries that didn’t cause the climate emergency but nevertheless feel the brunt of it daily. CORN originated the global conservation mechanism Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+) to stop deforestation. REDD+ was successfully mandated in the Paris Climate Agreement (2015) and covers 90% of the world’s tropical rainforests.
Direct Relief
Direct Relief provides humanitarian relief regardless of politics, religious or ethnic identities, or ability to pay and prepares the most vulnerable communities worldwide for more frequent, destructive emergencies. When disasters strike, they respond effectively and efficiently to provide requested medical equipment, medicine, and supplies to locally run healthcare facilities and projects.
International Rescue Committee
Founded in 1933, the IRC is a long-standing trusted partner in supporting those whose lives have been upended by sudden violence, political or natural. They are no stranger to areas of disaster and conflict throughout the world as they currently work in 40 countries. The IRC provides emergency aid and long-term assistance, including refugee settlement, and focuses on health, education, economic well-being, empowerment, and safety.
Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF)

They’re guided by principles of independence, impartiality, and neutrality to global political policies or movements.
National Disaster Search Dog Foundation
This organization rescues, trains, and places abused or abandoned dogs with first responders at no cost to rescue humans in disasters. Search dogs are one of the best resources for locating survivors buried under wreckage, and this is a great solution for dogs whose personalities might make them unsuitable as family pets but ideal for search and rescue.
Waterkeeper Alliance
In 1966, this movement was started by a band of blue-collar fishermen pushing back against industrial polluters, and their tough spirit remains intact through the 300+ local community groups that make up the global Waterkeeper Alliance today. The Alliance works to ensure, preserve, and protect clean and abundant water for all people and creatures. Their programs are diverse, spanning from patrolling waterways against polluters to advocating for environmental laws in courtrooms and town halls and educating in classrooms.
World Central Kitchen
Started by Chef José Andrés, WCK makes sure that people are fed in the wake of natural disasters. Their programs advance human and environmental health, offer access to professional culinary training, create jobs, and improve food security. WCK also teaches food safety and cooking classes to native people who live where disasters have occurred, so they may open restaurants and support the local economy more permanently. You can follow where WCK is currently on the ground assisting and feeding people affected by natural and man-made crises here.

At a party, a charming woman sat next to the famous writer #George_Bernard_Shaw, and he whispered in her ear: “Would you accept to spend a night with me for a million pounds..?!!
She smiled and shyly replied: "Of course, with pleasure."
He came back and asked her again after he was convinced of her consent, is it possible to reduce the amount to ten pounds..?!!
She got angry and shouted at him: “Who do you think I am, this one..?!!
He said: "Madam.. we know who you are, we just disagreed about the value of the reward..!!
He included this satirical story in his memoirs, likening it
What is happening... Where the positions of the opportunists change based on who pays more, and if their wages fall, they turn to the opposition and talk to us about patriotism, principles and honor..!!
Yes.. With such fallen people, countries are polluted and corruption prevails..

Mr. Getson: We’ve got Motion 505 on the floor from the Member for Edmonton-Gold Bar. I’m just going to read it into the record here yet again for the folks at home so they understand what’s taking place.
(a) endorse the principle [that] polluter pays; and (b) oppose the use of government revenue to incentivize the cleanup of abandoned oil and gas infrastructure by companies that are legally responsible for that cleanup.
On the surface, Mr. Speaker, this seems to be pretty innocuous, pretty innocuous like having a coyote on the edge of your farmyard when they keep sniffing around the chickens, but they want to keep grabbing one at a time. It’s the same type of thing.

Her Health, Her Power: A Manifesto On Hormonal Harmony
Women’s health is a multifaceted subject, and among its intricacies, hormonal imbalance stands out as a complex yet crucial aspect. Hormones, the chemical messengers secreted by the endocrine glands, orchestrate optimal changes in specific organs, playing a pivotal role in the normal functioning of a woman’s body.
This highly sensitive communication mechanism can falter due to various factors, leading to either an increase or decrease in hormone levels and subsequent hyper or hypo-function of associated glands. For instance, issues with the thyroid gland may result in hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, illustrating the delicate balance within the endocrine system.
Environmental Influences on Hormonal Health
The endocrine system proves remarkably sensitive to environmental factors such as pollution, artificial food flavors, food colors, pesticides, insecticides, stress and chemicals found in cosmetics etc. Even the micro plastics, from water stored in plastic bottles which can act as endocrine disruptors. These substances, being fat-soluble, gradually disrupt normal hormonal functions once settled in fat tissues.
The functioning of the adrenal glands can be influenced by emotional stress, losses, and physical trauma, while estrogen levels particularly affect the ovaries. As women enter menopause, the function of the ovaries declines. However, a backup mechanism kicks in if the adrenal glands are healthy, as they start balancing ovarian function by producing ovarian hormones. This helps prevent estrogen dominance that can occur after menopause. Factors such as the consumption of commercially processed foods, the use of birth control pills, and the intake of meat from cattle or poultry injected with hormones or antibiotics not only impact the health of the endocrine glands but also disrupt the beneficial bacteria in the gut. Additionally, all endocrine glands are increasingly sensitive to insulin resistance.

Conscious Choices for Optimal Endocrine Health
To safeguard the health of the endocrine system, women must be vigilant about their lifestyle choices, especially in terms of nutrition. Paying attention to warning signals, such as abnormal cravings, hair fall, dry skin, abdominal obesity, irregular menstrual cycles, abnormal facial hair, mood swings, etc. is crucial.
Taking proactive measures to address hormonal imbalances involves exploring alternative systems of medicine that treat holistically. Prioritizing natural remedies before resorting to allopathic interventions should be the guiding principle.
Managing Stress Levels: A Holistic Approach
Stress, often at the root of health issues, calls for conscious management. Integrating practices like meditation, yoga, and pranayama can contribute significantly. Positive hormones like serotonin, oxytocin, dopamine, and endorphins can be stimulated through healthy and happy relationships, outdoor activities, nature trails, and therapeutic treatments like hydrotherapy, therapeutic massages, raga and acupuncture.
The Role of a Nourishing Diet
A vital aspect to consider is maintaining a balanced and organic diet. Opt for fresh, seasonal sun-grown produce that breathes life into your mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
Choose Natural Healing
In the journey toward holistic well-being, detoxifying the body is paramount. Accredited by NABH, there are several good Naturopathy & Holistic Wellness Retreats.
