The Worst of All Possible Worlds #110: William Gibson's Neuromancer
Hacktivist/irl tiny kitten maia arson crimew (maia.crimew.gay / @nyancrimew) returns to discuss Neuromancer, the 1984 sci-fi novel that coined the term “cyberspace” and inspired a generation of hackers. Topics include breasting boobily up and down stairs, the parallels with 1995's Hackers, and how impressively William Gibson manages to capture the feeling of being perpetually on the run.
listening to those old-ass richard diamond radio shows while i do this comic and behaving normally (tittering coquettishly whenever dick powell says anything)
"I think its like, once you start seeing them interact you know its going to be slightly different. It's like, you know, the way they've left each other was so dramatic. And so, to me, it's like, "how are they interacting? What are they giving-- what are they, like, revealing of each other or themselves, which is very little. And then that 'thaw' we continue to talk about, and we kept referring to it as like, getting back into bed with each other... That is what it feels like. It feels like a-- a chess match, like a seduction dance. There's something about it where they still do want to be with each other, they're not willing to admit it."
dressed like a weird animal crossing character to go listen to the most important ppl in contemporary parapsychology (in my humble - but correct - opinion) talk about ghosts & shit.
can't get over this stupid mcdonald's trick or treat pail purse also. like hello. it's so impractical and useless. i want to take it everywhere.
guys what nerd do you think mutant mayhem donnie would be
and heres my reasoning for each option
Electrical engineer: Honestly idk I was thinking of Rise Donnie
Whatever 2012 Donnie’s deal is: As much I wanna punt the guy when he gets mushy over April he’s actually pretty smart. I havent seen 03 or 87 but I like how he covers a whole range of science fields but still struggles including alien Kraang tech. I’m not sure if past versions were like this but I’m assigning the “jack of all trades” to 2012 Donnie.
Biochem: the series looks very oozy and gross. The field would match the aesthetic a lot and Seth Rogan’s gross humor
Coding/Computer science: personal bias AND the credits scene where Donnie found the nerds. Also he could be chronically online
Generalized nerd: I guess a normal nerd like the Bay movies and the Batman crossover? Idk
Part two of the interview and this is freaking amazing. How completely unhinged.
Seth "firing" John? Gold.
The fact that The Times ran an article about him titled "John Oliver: the British comedy failure who makes America laugh" is... holy shit what petty bullshit. (Fun fact, the URL for that article is EVEN MORE PETTY: how-the-shambolic-fringe-performer-became-the-funniest-man-in-america. JESUS CHRIST!)
The insight into the process of building up Last Week Tonight was really interesting as well. It doesn't surprise me that he views himself as a not-great interviewer given the context of "I can't pretend to like shitty movies", but... he's better than he's crediting himself for.
"How dare you use a recent and specific example!" Everyone is so fucking giggly, this is so lovely. I'm so glad I got this at the end of my long day.

my biggest hater trait that i feel mostly bad about is that i think everyone who was famous on like a kid’s television show thats been off the air for years and who now makes that their whole brand is a hack
