Republicans demand border reform but whenever it actually becomes a possibility they find ways to sabotage it.
Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) said it is “irresponsible” to reject a bipartisan border bill “without even reading it” in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Saturday. “The crisis at our Southern Border should not be about party politics. The entire nation is finally feeling the burden that border communities have felt for years,” Cuellar’s post read. “It is irresponsible to reject a bipartisan border security bill without even reading it. We have a crisis at our border that demands solutions now.” “Democrats and Republicans must come together to get the job done,” Cuellar continued. Cuellar also included a clip of a recent interview he did on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” in which he questioned how someone could push back against a bipartisan border bill that they haven’t read. “Nobody has seen the text,” Cuellar said. House Republicans appear to be close to striking down a chance at border legislation, despite a history of wanting changes to border and migration policy tied with more Ukraine.
Adjudicated sex offender Donald Trump needs something to distract voters from his legal problems and Nazi rantings. So he's instructed Speaker "MAGA Mike" Johnson to kill the border bill being worked on in the Senate.
The whole point of MAGA Republicans is not to offer policy solutions but to use their positions to engage in a perpetual culture war.

Bloomberg - "Ideas that were once unthinkable are starting to gain traction among experts looking at how to solve the UK’s energy crisis."
With natural gas prices 10 times above their average over the last decade and millions of households facing a choice between paying for heat and food, government officials are starting to draw up options to get through the winter.
Suggestions from politicians, former ministers, energy analysts and economists echoing the solutions of the 1970s include nationalising industry, fixing prices, rigging wholesale energy markets and even telling industry to shut down.
With UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson due to leave office on Sept. 6 and Conservatives weighing whether to replace him with Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak, officials aren’t commenting.
But the severity of the crisis – “more than half of UK households will likely be in fuel poverty by January,” said Philippe Commaret, a senior executive at the power generator EDF Energy UK – has sparked talk of previously impossible options.[...]
Following are some of the policies that are emerging on the political agenda:
Freezing energy prices
Britain’s energy regulator, Ofgem, caps the amount that utilities can raise consumer bills and adjusts that restriction twice a year.
The next announcement due Friday is likely to allow annual bills for electricity and gas to surge to £3 500 a year, more than triple where it was before the pandemic and well above the current level of £1 971. Analysts at Citigroup see it reaching £5 800 in January.
The opposition Labour party under Keir Starmer supports a freeze and would subsidize energy distributors at an estimated cost of £29 billion for the six months through April.[...]
Scottish Power Chief Executive Officer Keith Anderson has suggested freezing household energy prices for two years, with the estimated £100 billion cost of doing so funded by a surcharge on bills from late 2024.
Labour would extend a windfall tax on North Sea energy producers to help pay for the subsidies. Former Liberal Democrat leader Vince Cable opposes a freeze, saying “if the war in Ukraine goes on you are stuck with a very expensive government subsidy.”
UK leadership contender and former chancellor Rishi Sunak has also warned about “the affordability of these things given the scale and the duration of the challenge.”
Nationalizing energy suppliers
Gordon Brown, who served as Labour prime minister through the global financial crisis a decade ago, was the first senior figure to propose freezing the price cap but he would nationalize energy suppliers as they inevitably went bust. The idea is backed by Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey. [...]
[the] head of oil and gas research at Investec, warned that nationalising suppliers would be legally messy, financially costly and an administrative distraction from the immediate crisis.
Even so, the idea has won the support of Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon as it becomes increasingly clear the government will have to act. “The cap is getting to levels that the consumer can’t pay and the taxpayer will have to step in,” said Piper
Collective buying
A more radical idea, though enormously problematic, would be to rig global energy markets to reduce prices. In theory, a cartel of countries agree on a limit for what they would pay for natural gas.[...]
A buyer’s cartel would essentially be the mirror image of what the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries does in the oil markets, limiting production to manage the oil price. Capping purchases could stabilize the gas markets and reduce the money flowing into Putin’s war machine.
There is precedent for such a mechanism. In both World War I and World War II, the UK government intervened with price controls in the copper market to prevent profiteering and ensure supplies for munition factories. The European Union used collective buying in the pandemic to secure Covid vaccines.
Yet the idea may be politically unworkable. The EU first proposed the plan in March, when leaders agreed to “work together on voluntary common purchase” of gas to make “optimal use of the collective political and market weight to dampen prices in negotiations.”
Kathryn Porter, founder of energy consultant Watt-Logic, said for the cartel to have real market power it would probably need to extend beyond the EU to include the Group of Seven nations.
However, the US is unlikely to enforce a price cap on its commercial energy producers and collective buying breaks EU competition rules. Various nations in Europe and the UK may even turn protectionist, locking in domestic supply for the national interest.
Orchestrated blackouts
The UK could take a leaf out of Edward Heath’s 1974 Conservative government and cut industry back to a three-day week. By destroying demand, emergency rationing would potentially reduce the UK gas price for consumers. It would also cause a deep recession.[...]
Voluntary “demand destruction” is the softest form of rationing. Centrica’s Conn has said further action is needed and called for deliberate “demand reduction.”[...]
Porter said the government needs to prepare for vulnerable households self-rationing this winter by creating “warm hubs” at local libraries and other public spaces. Last year, stories about pensioners using their freedom passes to keep warm riding public transport all day were a reminder of how far some people have to go to ensure they can afford to heat their homes at night.
Tax incentives for suppliers
Europe’s energy crisis will only really be resolved once alternatives to Russian gas are flowing. Speeding up the process of bringing through new supply would require a host of unpopular decisions, though, and would not resolve the crisis this winter.[...]
Relaxing green regulations may help, and ladling out tax incentives for new fossil fuel projects would also spur work. Porter said the UK could also reexamine its reluctance to allow hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, of unconventional reservoir rocks, something that horrifies environmentalists. It could also permit controversial oil and gas projects like the Cambo field in the North Sea.
Peace deal with Russia
Business leaders speaking privately at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos in May suggested a ceasefire with Russia. Giving Putin an “off-ramp” to end the war, restoring relations and bringing plentiful supplies of Russian gas back to Europe would halt the energy crisis in its tracks.
But it would leave Russia’s military closer to the heart of Europe and destabilize the security of Poland and Hungary, pillars of the Western alliance.
Politically, there seems little chance of détente.[...]
A dismal winter for Europe economically and military stagnation for Russia could force a reset in relations, though.

Happy Birthday, Mr. Mancini...thanks for three of the biggest tunes of my younger years...and many more!
L’Aquila
We’re here for a hundredth birthday concert for Henry Mancini.
L’Aquila is somewhere between one and two hours from Rome, depending on the traffic. It’s in the Apennine mountains. (You remember them from elementary school, right? Well, I remembered they were in Italy, but I couldn’t have picked them out on a map, nor did I know they were so close to Rome.) It’s a bit over two thousand feet high and feels like it, it’s in the fifties today, and supposed to go down to almost freezing tonight. If it weren’t for the long days, I’d think winter is coming.
Actually, Hank’s birthday was yesterday. We celebrated with dinner in the hotel, in a restaurant with multiple cases of aged beef wherein you can see your dinner before it is cooked. Actually, I was the only one who had steak, from the local cow, as opposed to one from Russia, Ireland or Japan or even America, all of which were in the case. And they served this round bread that was a cross between naan and pizza and it was very good.
But speaking of the food…
I just have to testify about the bread. It’ll crack a tooth, I tell you. Which is the crusty exterior you want, which Americans won’t tolerate. That’s the way bagels used to be, now they’ve got the consistency of Wonder Bread. Furthermore, everywhere you go in America, except for a few restaurants, the bread in the basket they serve with dinner is soft, basically bland, empty calories. But at lunch today, the bread might have looked pedestrian, but the crust reminded me of my youth, back when you bought rye bread at the local bakery, when they sliced it upon order.
So the key is not only making people aware it’s Henry Mancini’s hundredth birthday, but that they consume the music.
Now if you’re my age, everybody knows Henry Mancini. But over the past week I quizzed two twentysomethings and got blank stares in response. Then I started to sing “Pink Panther” and their eyes immediately lit up. But still, it’s such a challenge crossing old acts over to younger generations, attaching the composer to the song. The family switched to Primary Wave to quarterback this centenary celebration, we’ll see how it works out.
Anyway, the conservatory in L’Aquila reached out, they were doing four concerts, would we come?
Well, here we are.
Now the head of the conservatory’s passion is prog rock, I kid you not. Unfortunately, he doesn’t speak English so well, but I did get him to say his favorite prog rock keyboard player was Rick Wakeman.
And the conductor of the program… He’s not that great with English either. But Daniela studied at the University of Chicago, she’s the conservatory’s musicologist. And she’s a fount of information. They say you learn most when you hang with the locals…that is true. Although I still wish I spoke Italian. You know, like Jackie Kennedy, that’s what we heard when JFK was president, before she was married to Onassis, when her image was at its peak, that she spoke six, or was it seven languages. You have no idea of the hope JFK’s election generated. A turning point, a young man to lead us into the sixties. We thought we had something similar with Obama but he punted, for fear of looking like the angry black man. Biden is standing up to the status quo more than Barack, then again, Biden was vice president for eight years and saw firsthand that you can’t negotiate with the unreasonable.
I had to ask Daniela about “Gomorrah.” Of course she’d seen it, and “Suburra” too (although it took a while for her to understand what show I was talking about, I didn’t have the accent right). Streaming television is now the universal language.
So after waking up we went to the Fountain of 99 Spouts. Built in the 1200s. No one knows where the water comes from, supposedly they killed the architect and buried him under the fountain to preserve the secret.
And then we went to the local museum.
Most of the art was religious, but it all made me feel insignificant. That and the Forum back in Rome. You’re born and you feel so important, believing you matter, that you’re going to put a dent in the universe. Meanwhile, almost no one achieves this. And frequently those who are remembered were overlooked during their lifetime. But you see the antiquities and you realize nothing has changed over the years. Oh, of course travel is much speedier, and health care is much better, but everybody thinks they’re important when they’re alive, that the era within which they’re living is the most significant. I don’t know, it’s weird. Museums are sanctuaries, where the trappings of regular society don’t count. How rich you are, what kind of car you drive… You leave those at the door at the museum. It’s just you and your senses. Your thoughts start to percolate. Today money triumphs, but not at the museum. It’s a great correction.
So we’ll be back in Rome, but for less than two days. The whole trip is barely a week.
And L’Aquila is not a tourist town. Although there are ski areas in the mountains, one where Pope John Paul II used to surreptitiously ski. And there is still snow on the peaks. And every car I’ve been in so far has had a stick shift. Nearly extinct in the U.S., from Skodas to Volvos, everybody’s rowing through the gears here.
And oh, on the conservatory stage, I saw this Fazioli concert grand. I figured they couldn’t afford a Steinway. But it turns out Fazioli is usually more expensive, and their concert grand is even bigger, and you learn something every day.
That’s the name of the game.

Ben Affleck Is Batman, and Here’s Why That’s Perfect Casting
By:  Jacob Hall
August 23, 2023
By now, you've surely heard the news: Ben Affleck has been cast as Batman in the still unofficially titled ‘Man of Steel 2,’ which will see Superman go toe-to-toe with the Caped Crusader.
The reaction was immediate and intense. For every fan who thought Affleck was a great choice, there was another who was ready to jump off a bridge. For every reasonable conversation about the casting, there was another that made reasonable people want to remove their ears upon hearing "Batfleck." Because that's how much people love Batman; he drives us all to bridge jumping.
However, the simple truth of the matter is that there is no such thing as multiple opinions on the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman. There is only one solid fact: it's terrific. There's no one we'd rather see put on the cape, get behind the wheel of the Batmobile and chuck batarangs at criminals' heads.
You want a good reason? Here are a few..
He’s a Damn Good Looking Man
Look, let's get this one out of the way first: Ben Affleck is an extraordinarily good-looking man with a physique and face that seem like they were specifically crafted by nature for a superhero costume. More importantly, his looks are in line with our new Superman -- like Henry Cavill, Affleck is a man, not some generic, flavor-of-the-week pretty boy. They were never going to get an ugly brute to wear the cape and cowl (although 'The Dark Knight Returns' writer/artist Frank miller would probably prefer it that way), but at least they're casting the right kind of handsome. If you're attracted to Ben Affleck, it's only because you're a human being. (And let's be clear, we're not saying Christian Bale is an ugly brute.)
So, Let’s Talk About Daredevil
The most common complaint from fans about Affleck's casting as Batman has been to dredge up the debacle that was 2003's 'Daredevil.' They ignore his two Oscars. They ignore 'Hollywoodland,' 'The Company Men,' 'The Town' and 'Argo.' They ignore the fact that he's a completely different man than he was back in his (shudder) "Bennifer" days. All some people can talk about is the fact that he once played a superhero in a terrible movie.
Yes, 'Daredevil' is stilted, boring movie that's somehow managed to age into an even more stilted and boring movie. Yes, Affleck isn't particularly good in it. But let's be honest with ourselves here: Affleck is the least of the film's problems. Can we talk about the lousy screenplay? Can we talk about Mark Steven Johnson's pedestrian direction? Can we talk about every single thing that's wrong with the movie (which will take all day)? Affleck is guilty of being involved in a production that was a clusterfrack from frame one -- of course, he was bad in it! Everyone was bad in it!
If you're going to use 'Daredevil' as a reason why Ben Affleck shouldn't play Batman, your argument is essentially "every actor whose given a poor performance or starred in a lousy movie can't play Batman." Follow that logic and no one plays Batman. Ever.
Aged Like a Fine Wine
A decade ago, Ben Affleck put on skintight leather to play the Marvel superhero Daredevil and the whole world rolled its eyes. What changed? It's quite simple, really. Time has been kind to Affleck. As he's aged, he's grown as an actor and artist, taking on more nuanced, challenging roles and proving himself to be one of the best directors working today. Affleck wears this experience in every film he's in now, appearing less like a cocky young star and more like a guy who's seen it all. It's easy to write off young Affleck -- he was likable but rarely compelling. But 41-year-old Affleck? He's aged into a true movie star, a man of genuine interest.
In the official press release, director Zack Snyder talks about Affleck being able to play both sides of Batman, the charming Bruce Wayne and the tough, vigilant Batman. Directing himself in 'The Town' and 'Argo,' he proved more than capable of playing complicated characters with dual identities, guys whose soft sides mask something far darker, tougher and more violent. Anyone who immediately writes off Affleck has not seen the films he's directed or, more specifically, the performances he's given in films he's directed.
Batman Can Smile, You Know
We liked Bale as Batman as much as the next fanboy, but it's time for a change. We know Bruce Wayne has a lot to be angry about, but that doesn't mean the Caped Crusader can't crack a grin now and then. Bale's stoic, humorless performance was typical for him, but Affleck is a very different kind of actor. He's a naturally funny and charming guy, a performer who can own the stage on 'Saturday Night Live.' Now, we're not saying Affleck should take the Adam West route with his Batman, but we are saying that Affleck can play a Batman who, you know, occasionally feels joy and has amusing things to say to Alfred. Batman can be dark without being mopey, so let Affleck do what he does best and lighten it up just a little bit.
One Classy Motherf———-er
Has any actor really captured Bruce Wayne? While Christian Bale and Michael Keaton made more-than-capable Batmen, their take on the millionaire playboy behind the mask was always a little, well, dull. Bruce was always the least interesting part of Christopher Nolan's 'Dark Knight' trilogy. He was a cipher who occasionally pretended to be a loudmouth rich kid when he wasn't fighting crime. What about the Wayne of the comics? The well-liked philanthropist and social celebrity who acts as a figurehead for Gotham City by day before protecting it behind a mask at night? Affleck is perfect for this half of Batman's existence. Effortlessly classy, charming and suave, he resembles the Bruce Wayne we know and love, more so in everyday life than any actor who's put on the cowl before.
BONUS:  Holy Jawline, Batman!
When you're casting Batman, there's one thing more important than anything else. Sure, good looks, a superheroic physique and strong acting skills are a requirement, but they're all secondary at the end of the day. You see, there is one part of Batman that is more important than any other. If not chosen correctly, it's a tiny detail that could derail the entire film. We are, of course, talking about Batman's chin. If Batman has a bad chin, how the heck is he supposed to make that costume look cool at all? A bad chin and/or jawline will only make the whole thing look silly.
But, ladies and gentlemen, Ben Affleck has one helluva jawline. And that's all you need, really.
It’s funny to read all this and think of the Ben affleck from them and the Ben Affleck of right now (technically he was always this Ben but he and the people around him hid it really well)

For the first time in more than 40 years, a Republican could win the governor’s seat in Oregon, breaching the seemingly solid Democratic line of states running along the Pacific coastline of the US.
The tight race between former Oregon House speaker Tina Kotek, a Democrat, and former Oregon House minority leader Christine Drazan, a Republican, which in the latest polling showed Drazan with a hairline lead, indicates a rebuff of the current term-limited liberal governor, Kate Brown.
Brown has one of the lowest approval ratings of any governor in the country amid brewing concern over how state leadership has handled everything from the pandemic to homelessness.
But it’s a third-party candidate with support from both Republicans and Democrats, along with contributions from the richest man in the state, that have truly set a Republican on a path toward possible victory.
“Democrats are pretty good at running a red-blue race in Oregon … But the dynamics of a three-way race have really kind of thrown that playbook out the window,” said Jake Weigler, a progressive political strategist in Oregon not involved in the race.
Betsy Johnson, who was a moderate Democrat while serving as a state senator and now is running as an independent, has been forecast to receive as much as 14% of the vote. Outside of independent voters, 17% of Democrats plan to vote for her, while only 9% of Republicans do, according to an Emerson College Polling survey released earlier this month.
Rebecca Tweed, a Republican strategist in Oregon with no connection to the governor’s race, said it will be this subset of voters to watch come election day.
“We’ll have to see if any of those voters that got pulled toward Betsy end up going back into their corners of the Democratic and Republican parties,” she said.
But it could also come down to what independent voters decide to do next month.
Ariya Ahrary, who has lived in Oregon since 2007, said she was initially very happy to see the independent candidate on the ballot. But after taking a closer look at each candidate’s policies, she said she now will likely vote for Kotek in hopes that she will help change the direction of the state.
“We do want actual real change instead of just all talk. Hopefully that happens, that it’s not just all talk, that it’s actual action,” she said.
By far Johnson’s largest single financial contribution has come from Phil Knight, co-founder of Nike. Altogether, he has sent $3.75m to Johnson’s campaign since January, and then earlier this month sent $1.5m to Drazan. In an interview with the New York Times earlier this month, he said he would do anything to keep Kotek out of the governor’s seat.
The gubernatorial race projections in a state where Joe Biden won by 16 points just two years ago have been a shock to many across the nation. They have prompted national political figures to visit the Pacific north-west hoping to drum up support for their candidates.
On Saturday, Biden spoke at an event in Portland, where he highlighted the increasingly important role governors play in policy implementation, while praising Kotek’s leadership and bravery.
“You’re a progressive state. You’re a state that’s always been ahead of the curve. Stay ahead of the curve, and elect Tina,” he said.
Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin, a rising Republican star, spoke at a rally for Drazan on Tuesday, while Senator Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat from Massachusetts, attended an event for Kotek this weekend.
Kotek, Drazan and Johnson recently came together for the race’s final televised debate. The largely mild-mannered occasion was punctuated by sharp criticisms hurled between Drazan, Johnson and their Democratic rival, including over abortion.
Following the US supreme court’s overturning of Roe v Wade earlier this year, Oregon has positioned itself as a safe haven for abortions. Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood board member, described herself as pro-choice. Kotek, who was endorsed by Planned Parenthood PAC of Oregon and helped with the legislative effort to codify abortion access into state law in 2017, said she is a strong supporter of abortion access, including potentially using taxpayer money to support that type of care. She accused Drazan of posing a threat to abortion access in the state.
Drazan rebutted by saying while she wouldn’t use taxpayer funds to support abortion, the practice would remain legal. “It gets more and more startling to me the extent to which Tina Kotek will lie to voters,” she said
Another key issue the candidates responded to during the debate was the state’s response to the pandemic when it came to closing schools. Drazan accused both Governor Brown and Kotek of throwing “our kids under the bus”, while Johnson said: “The single worst thing we did during Covid was to shut kids out of the classroom.”
Kotek, who agreed that students were kept out of the classroom too long, said it was in fact her Republican opponent who did the throwing by voting against a multibillion-dollar education bill in 2019.
But it was a question from a resident of Wilsonville, a city about 17 miles south of Portland, that spotlighted an issue at the center of this race: “Since you’ve been a lifelong Democrat, how do you square yourself with knowing that your current efforts will probably cost Democrats the governorship for the state?”
Johnson told the audience that she joined the race because she sees herself as the best candidate to lead a state that has “gone off the rails”, and that she has no plan to drop out.
She said: “I believe sports oddsmakers don’t win games. Polls don’t predict elections. I’ve seen enough fourth-quarter finishes to know that it’s not over until it’s over. And I’m in this race until the absolute end.”

LUCY’S THIN BLUE LINE
Lucy and Law Enforcement ~ Part 3
Tumblr media
On “Here’s Lucy,” Lucy Carter not only had multiple run-ins with the police – she actually became Sheriff for a day! Here’s a look at Carter and Cops!
Tumblr media
“Lucy’s Impossible Mission” (1968) ~ In this “Mission:Impossible” spoof, even the police are in on the caper. John J. “Red” Fox was best known for playing policemen, which is what he did on five of his eight appearances on “The Lucy Show” as well as three of his five episodes of “Here’s Lucy.” The policeman has no lines, but is kicked by Lucy to get his attention and says “Ouch!”
Tumblr media
“Guess Who Owes Lucy $23.50?” (1969) ~ Van Johnson plays himself and his evil doppelganger.Orwin C. Harvey plays the Security Guard (right). Harvey has one line, spoken off screen. A second Security Guard goes uncredited and has no lines.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Ex-Con” (1969) ~ Lucy and a safecracker (Wally Cox) go undercover as Little Old Ladies at a dive bar. Vince Howard played the policeman on the extreme left. Many of his 125 TV and film credits were as law enforcement officials. Howard also played a policeman on “Lucy and Mannix are Held Hostage” (1971). Larry J. Blake (policeman on right) is making the first of his eight “Here's Lucy” appearances.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Goes on Strike” (1969) ~ Harry refuses to give Lucy a raise so she goes on strike with the other secretaries in the building, including Isabel (Mary Wickes). John J. ‘Red’ Fox returns as the cop on the beat in front of the Bradshawe Building.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Great Airport Chase” (1969) ~ Government Agent Bill (Morgan Jones) appears to investigate international epsionage in an episode shot on location at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The G-Man is never addressed by name but listed in the end credits.
Tumblr media
"Lucy Helps Craig Get His Driver's License" (1969) ~ A motorcycle cop (Ray Kellogg) faces off with driving test examiner Wibur Hurlow (Jack Gilford).
Tumblr media
Inside the police station, the officers issuing licenses are played by (left to right): Herkie Styles, Joseph Mell, and Sid Gould.
Tumblr media
“Lucy's Burglar Alarm” (1969) ~ Detective Harvey Gaynes is played by Elliott Reid, who also appeared on “I Love Lucy” and “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy, the Cement Worker” (1969) ~ Lucy disguises herself as a street construction worker to find a valuable ring she’s lost. She encounters the cop on the beat, played by Harry Hickox in the first of his three episodes of “Here’s Lucy.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Viv Visit Tijuana” (1970) ~ At the border, Harry is questioned by a customs officer played by Don Megowan in his only appearance with Lucille Ball. He is perhaps best remembered as the Sheriff in The Wolfman (1956). His final role was as a police sergeant in the 1979 TV movie Mrs. R’s Daughter.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Wall Cox” (1970) ~ Lucy helps Wally Manley (Wally Cox) get a job as a warehouse security guard where they encounter armed criminals.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Ma Parker” (1970) ~ Carole Cook plays a master criminal. The police convince Lucy to take her place in order to nab her associates. Harry Hickox (Lieutenant L. Hickox, left) makes the second of his three episodes of “Here’s Lucy,” all as policemen. Stafford Repp (Police Detective Halloran,  right) made a career of playing policemen even before he became famous as Chief O'Hara on TV’s “Batman” (1966-68). He played two different officers of the law on “Dennis the Menace” in 1962 and 1963, alongside Gale Gordon.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Raffle” (1971) ~ The Baliffs in the courtroom are played by Emile Autuori and John J. ‘Red’ Fox.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Carol Burnett aka The Hollywood Unemployment Follies” (1971) ~ Lucy and Carol stage a musical revue featuring a tribute to the operetta Rose Marie (1930 & 1940). Four Mounties (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) sing “Stout-Hearted Men”. From left to right: Sid Gould, Kay Kuter, Johnny Silver and Mike Wagner.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and Mannix are Held Hostage” (1971) ~ In this cross-over with the Mike Connors private eye series “Mannix” (saved from cancellation by Lucille Ball), the policemen are played by Vince Howard (left) and Robert Foulk (right).
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Celebrities” (1971) ~ Sid Gould plays the Security Guard at the gate of Morton Pictures. Impressionist Rich Little stars with Jack Benny.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Candid Camera” (1971) ~ Allen Funt plays himself and an evil imposter, getting the Carters to participate in criminal capers under the impression they are on “Candid Camera”.  Law enforcement is played by (left to right): Peter Leeds, Robert Carson as Sergeant Lou Holmes, and Paul Sorenson, who played policemen many times during his career.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Chinese Curse” (1972) ~ When Lucy saves a laundry owner (Keye Luke) from a safe falling in the street, reporters and the police are on the scene. Frequent background performer Walter Smith plays the policeman. He had appeared with Lucille Ball in Forever Darling (1956), as well as in Desilu’s “The Untouchables” and “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
“The Case of the Reckless Wheelchair Driver” (1972) ~ Lucy, in a wheelchair due to her broken leg, is set-up by a conman (Jesse White). Law enforcement officials are (left to right): Officer Rafferty (Robert Foulk), Sergeant Montgomery (Hal Hickox), and Officer Egan (Ed Hall).
Tumblr media
“Dirty Gertie” (1972) ~ Lieutenant Egan is played by Craig Stevens, who is probably best remembered for playing the title role in the private eye series “Peter Gunn” (1958-61). Egan questions Lucy and says he's “just trying to get the facts, ma'am.” This is a paraphrase of a quote from another famous TV detective, Joe Friday on “Dragnet.” The role of Lieutenant Egan was originally written with Webb in mind. Stevens even imitates Webb's deadpan delivery.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Goes to Prison” (1973) ~ When Lucy goes undercover in jail to discover where Mumsie Westcott (Elsa Lanchester) hid her stolen loot, Matron Wilson is played by Jody Gilbert, who also played a prison matron on “The Lucy Show.”
Tumblr media
Two uniformed policemen are played by uncredited actors and have no lines.
Tumblr media
“The Big Game” (1973) ~ Jerry Jones plays a policeman on the prowl for ticket scalpers at the stadium. Prior to this, Jones played a policeman on “The Doris Day Show” and “The Brady Bunch.”
Tumblr media
“Lucy Plays Cops and Robbers” (1973) ~ On the side of the law are Officers Spencer and Riggs, played by Dick Sargent and Gary Crosby. Rumor has it that the police officers were supposed to be played by “Adam-12” (1968-75) co-stars Martin Milner and Kent McCord. Like “Here’s Lucy,” the NBC police drama was filmed on the Universal lot. Gary Crosby played a recurring role on “Adam-12.” In the script, one officer says to the other “I think we’ve been riding together too long” which would have been even funnier had it been an already famous pair of policemen like Milner and McCord. The episode features Al Lewis, who famously played Officer Schnauser on “Car 54 Where Are You?” (1961-63).
Tumblr media
“Lucy the Sheriff” (1974) ~ Lucy finds out that her grandmother was the first woman sheriff of a Montana town that is celebrating its centennial. She is asked to play her grandmother at the celebrations, which include the recreation of a bank robbery. Lucy is enjoying playing lawmaker until a couple of genuine robbers interrupt the celebration and take her hostage!
Tumblr media
Flora Belle Orcutt (the fictional one) is supposedly the first lady sheriff in the West. In real life, the distinction of first woman sheriff has been disputed. Some say it was Texan Emma Banister (1918), but others claim it was Mary Roach (1922-27) because Emma had inherited the position from her husband. Still others believe the title belongs to Kansan Mabel Chase (1926). Mrs. James Latty of Burlington, Iowa, was known as the first “Unofficial Woman Sheriff" as far back as 1870.
Tumblr media
Lucy the Sheriff meets Sheriff Bart Thomas, played by Orwin C. Harvey.
Tumblr media
“Lucy Calls the President” (1977) ~ In the CBS special, Lucy Whittaker (Lucille Ball) is scheduled to get a visit from President Jimmy Carter. In advance of the visit, the Barker home is visited by Secret Service Officers Thatcher (Joey Forman) and Stockley (Stack Pierce).
Tumblr media
Stone Pillow (1985) ~ Lucille Ball plays a homeless woman living on the streets. When another homeless woman dies on her corner, the police are called. Pat McNamara (Officer Daggett) played Sheriff Perkins in Silence of the Lambs (1991).
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the Guard Goose” (1986) ~ This unaired episode of “Life With Lucy” was originally scheduled for broadcast November 22, 1986. US approves sale of Sidewinder and Harpoon missiles to Taiwan to try to prevent Chinese aggression

In a move that will certainly make China more agitated, the U.S. State Department approved on Friday the sale of 100 Sidewinder AIM-9X Block II missiles and 60 AGM-84L-1 Harpoon Block II missiles to Taiwan.
The proposed sale of Sidewinder missiles worth US$ 85.6 million, "will increase Taiwan's ability to combat or prevent aggression through demonstration of accuracy against air targets". Harpoon missiles, costing US$ 355 million, will help combat or prevent maritime aggression, coastal blockades and amphibian attacks," said the statements of the Security and Defense Cooperation Agency (DSCA) about the two approvals.

Taiwan has been the subject of continuous Chinese intimidation in the form of overflights and navigation of warships near the island nation. The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) held an exercise with the three services last month to simulate the landing of soldiers on the island to achieve "unification" (Chinese term for a military takeover of the island of Taiwan).
Sidewinder missiles are designed to fit Taiwan warplanes, including the current f-16 jets, as well as the newest F-16V warplanes that have been ordered. Harpoons are designed to be launched from air and sea platforms.
The acquisition of the two powerful types of missiles will give the Chinese PLA something to worry about, as they are considered by experts as better than competing missiles in the PLA inventory.
Taiwan has exercised caution in combating Chinese intimidation. However, earlier this week, it fired at an alleged Chinese drone after issuing a warning indicating a hardening position of the Taipei government.
While the Harpoon missies are manufactured by Boeing, the Sidewinders are manufactured by Raytheon.
