Happy Canada Day! This is an Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) in Algonquin Provincial Park, July 2017. The White Pine is Ontario's Provincial Tree, and the tallest in Algonquin Park. These incredible plants begin life as a tiny seed which needs to find the right conditions on the forest floor. Many of these conditions (exposed soil rather than soil covered by fallen leaves, and an opening in the canopy for sunlight to reach the seedling) are created by natural fires or windstorms. Summer Activity: Adding a Shallow Super & Naming New Hive, Pinus Strobus

Taking note of the warm, humid temperatures this summer, we added a shallow super and shallow frames to the top of the hive from Weeping Pine Apiaries. Now that the shy queen seems to be back laying lots of new brood, we wanted to make sure they had enough space and ventilation for the summer. If not, the colony may get too large and feel crowded and decide to swarm away from the hive.

To celebrate the queen and hive settling in, we decided to name this new hive Pinus Strobus, which is the Latin name for Eastern White Pine.

Eastern White pine (Pinus strobus), sweating some pitch. Had a windfall limb come down in the access way behind our house during the winter storm a few weeks ago, dragged it in for firewood. It'll need to season probably a year before it'll be any good to burn, and even then I won't burn it indoors, but next summer it will give us a nice campfire it two! Was stupid enough to not wear gloves, took a lot of scrubbing to get the pitch off my hands. For real sticky stuff like pine pitch, I strap some cheap coffee grounds in water and use it as a scrub with some hand soap; the acid in the coffee, and the grit of the grounds works surprisingly well. Also learned that green pine apparently doesn't split well, which was surprising because green maple split beautifully!
