Riding in Cars with Boys (2001)
Tumblr media
I can feel Riding in Cars with Boys wrapping its fingers around my neck, desperately trying to wring out the emotions. I say no. NO! This movie may be poised to be emotional but it lacks the genuine heart to make it effective.
Based on the memoirs of Beverly Donofrio, the film begins in 1961. Beverly “Bev” Donofrio (Drew Barrymore) is a smart teenager who dreams of going to college in New York. Unfortunately, she becomes pregnant at 15. Soon she’s married to the baby’s father, Ray (Steve Zahn), and her whole life gets flushed from one toilet to another directly below it. Through it all though, there’s hope that she can climb her way out of this mess of her own making.
The biggest problem with this inspirational drama is Drew Barrymore. She's not right for this role. As a teenage girl, she doesn’t look the part and she simply doesn't have the skills needed to get you to overlook this detail. Next issue: she’s too attractive. No football jock would reject a girl who looks like Bev, even if she handed him some poetry at a party and this makes the circumstances in which she meets Ray unbelievable. She’s just too good-looking. This uneven foundation means the emotions don't come the way they should. Are there tears? Yes, but they ring false. There’s a spark missing throughout. Bev never comes off as a tough mother who loves her child and would never have traded her life for anything else in the world, despite the fact that it came in the way of her dreams. She appears selfish, bitter, petty, and overall unsympathetic. I wouldn’t go so far as to say “unfit” to be a mother, but certainly not motherly.
You want to connect emotionally to this story and its characters. It's easy to understand how difficult it must be for Bev or any mother to raise children while their partner continuously proves themselves useless, or worse. Everyone feels that desire to be more than what life expects you to be, that determination to overcome adversity at any cost. Except the movie doesn't really show you a "way out" or provide any true insight on what this kind of life is like. When you look at the grand scheme of things, she's actually much better off than Ray - who turns out to be a more complex person than her. In a movie like this, you're supposed to leave realizing that yes indeed, Bev's life was made better by giving birth. That's what she says, but you don't believe it, you don't see it, you don't feel it.
When the movie does work is when it spends time with Bev’s son Jason (various actors when he’s young, Adam Garcia when he’s a man). Even from a young age, you can tell there's a lot of conflicting ideas inside the boy. All of the best scenes concern him in one way or another. I know many will be suckered by this true story and the credit all belongs to him.
I’m making Riding in Cars with Boys sound way worse than it is. It’s not unbearable. I can even understand people liking it but you can tell there's someone else out there telling this story better. When it tries to be funny, it really isn’t. It’s a movie about a woman who is not a good mother but we’re supposed to think that she is and the ending is too neat, too clean considering all we've seen before. In different hands, Riding in Cars with Boys could have brought me to tears, but this effort did not come even close. (On DVD, September 12, 2015)

Laverne & Shirley In The Army - 2 DVD set - CBS Home Entertainment - released November 7, 2019 - 304 minutes - 13 episodes   CBS released this set of Hanna Barbera’s Lavern and Shirley cartoon, as well as The Fonz and The Happy Days Gang: The Complete Animated Series. No word at this moment for other CBS/Hanna Barbera cartoons: Mork & Mindy or Jeannie.   The good news is that these are FINALLY available. Remembering Penny Marshall as a member of our HOCUS POCUS family. I never met her, as we weren’t in scenes together, but we were so honored to have this icon of TV and film grace our movie. I first remember watching Penny on TV’s THE ODD COUPLE, then HAPPY DAYS, and the classic LAVERNE & SHIRLEY. And as a director, she paved the way for many to follow with such classics as BIG, A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN, and AWAKENINGS. Her dry wit and knack for storytelling in front of and behind the camera are things we can all learn from. May she rest in God’s peace. #PennyMarshall #RIP https://www.instagram.com/p/Brngq0ZHjKl/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1mud6d9z4eb8t

A League of Their Own (1992)
Tumblr media
No matter who you are, you'll relate to A League of Their Own. It's funny and dramatic, with great, quotable lines, and terrific performances. It's a crowd-pleaser, a movie you'll look back upon fondly right away.
In 1943, every young able-bodied men have left for Europe to fight the war. To keep the profits coming to the team owners and to give the people some entertainment, the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) is created. The film chronicles the rise of the Rockford Peaches. Nobody respects them, not the least bit their washout of a coach Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks). But their star player Dorothy "Dottie" Hinson (Geena Davis) has what it takes to take them to the top, and make this league something to be taken seriously.
Right away, you'll latch onto the characters. These women want to be taken seriously as athletes They play for real. Sliding, hitting, giving it their all every single time. But this movie is not a gender-swapped selection of cliches. They aren’t a collection of underdogs just waiting to get their big break so they can go out and change the world. They're real people, products of their time. As soon as their husbands come back from the war, they’re going to head right back into the kitchen, ready to cook and raise the kids as if their time on the field never happened. It mixes the exhilaration you feel as they rise through the ranks with melancholy. They don’t realize how big of an impact they are going to have and you wonder what if...
You don't expect to find great conversation-starters out of sports movie but A League of Their Own has plenty. The players are not taken seriously because of their gender. To get attention, they have to be feminine and sexy. To be seen as legitimate, they have to try twice as hard as their male counterparts and shatter away the expectations placed on them. There is a lot of emotion in this movie on the screen as these women have to confront big ideas. There's even more going on in YOUR head. You wonder what you would do, or how you would react if placed in their shoes.
That would be plenty to keep you entertained, but there’s more. This is also a great sports movie. It’s a case of the ultimate underdogs. The coach doesn’t even believe in them. They have to prove themselves to EVERYONE. Their families, their teammates, to the world that is hesitant to fill baseball stadium to watch a bunch of ladies play, even to themselves. Baseball may not necessarily be what I would call an interesting sport to watch but here, I was gnawing on my fingernails. The way Hans Zimmer’s score was pounding in my ears (or was that my heartbeat?) during the final game, the uncertainty of who was going to win (because the movie does a great job keeping you guessing). It felt as real as a live event. My only criticism if I had to find one is that some of the baseball game montages do run on a bit long. It's worth seeing just to get a look at Tom Hanks playing a jerk. He's great at it too!
Even if you don’t like baseball, catch A League of Their Own. You easily latch onto the characters, the casting is immaculate (particularly in the before/after scenes) and it chronicles a chapter in sports history that’s worth telling. The movie makes you feel good and makes you think too. It only gets better if you can watch it with a crowd and discuss it afterward. (On DVD, March 6, 2015)
