Who wants to make a peller box?
Guess what! I finally gathered my pages of scribbled notes, my camera of haphazard in-progress pictures, and finally compiled a set of instructions for making one of these bad boys!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And not only that, but I've got two versions of this baby. I like mixing and matching my unit families because sometimes 1/32 inch sparks joy and sometimes 14 mm is just so convenient, but especially since all of my chipboard comes in english thicknesses, here's a version of the process for my fellow imperial units weirdos:
And here's one for the sensible folks of the world, raised on a base-ten system rather than dividing everything in half and then in half and then in half-- I won't subject you to inches, when there's a workaround, but I was tempted! Have your localized version of the story and have fun with it:
Mad credit of course goes to Hugo Peller, who developed these things in the first place, but also to Jack Fetterer, who preserved a set of notes from a 1990 class, which, as far as I can tell, are the most complete set of instructions available online. But I'm an engineer, I couldn't be satisfied there, I had bludgeon it into a system of equations, sorted by usage and material. And I also go into some of the hiccups I ran into trying to follow those class instructions, like being a green amateur at leatherwork, or not having the equipment to saw plywood boards in my apartment. These instructions still do make some unfair assumptions about the base knowledge level of anyone who wants to give this a try, like using bookcloth rather than plain cloth, but I may try to loop back and adjust that soon.
I can't claim any kind of expertise in this type of work, but I beat my head against an interesting problem, and it's time to share what I got out of it! And, secret goal, I want to help more people make more cool things, and maybe improve on my process in ways I can absorb and chew on in the future. Save my work, change it, I dare anyone who sees this to improve it!! I want it to be better. Credit would be cool, and of course the actual experts I leveraged for this deserve all the credit in the world, but that's not my priority. I want the world to have more exciting things in it, and I want more people to have exciting skills. Go forth and go nuts!!

PA’ATENI by neonheartbeat (@urulokid), author’s copies.
A memory of flames licking at the pillars of the throne room on the ancestral plane, N’Jadaka’s mouth curled in a mocking sneer, filled Shuri’s memory. Fire and earth. “You were happy to die at my hands,” she echoed, the skin on her arms pebbling as a shiver ran through her.
“Yes. But I only wished for one thing, and I had not gotten it before my death. So I was glad you showed mercy in the end.”
“And what did you wish for?” Shuri asked, advancing on him from the bed. “Your people swimming up the river to break Wakanda’s borders? An empire of blood against all other nations in the world?”
“I wished,” said Namor very quietly, watching her and not moving, “to hear you say my name.”
348,367 words | 1,112 pages | 2 volumes
When I first reached out to Neon to ask if I could bind pa’ateni for them, I had all these dreams of beadwork and jade and rich purples and golds and silk and layers of fabric emulating the rich description Neon weaves (you know this was gonna be a FANCY fancy bind).
But when I asked Neon what kinda cover they wanted and they said “Ahhh just very natural I think,” that threw me for a LOOP. Because I was like fuck! Now what do I do! And the answer was… that I couldn’t be happier with how this bind turned out, so THANK YOU so much Neon for pointing me this direction!
One of the things i love about pa’ateni, and all of Neon’s work, is the attention to the ordinary. Part of the reason Neon’s characters feel so real is how much regular stuff gets description—whether that’s thinking about laundry chutes or washing their hair or getting drunk at a local bar. There’s a peacefulness to it, and that peace is at the heart of Namor and Shuri’s relationship (once they finally get on the right track). It reminds me of evenings at the ocean, of the quiet solitude of the ocean crashing. That something doesn’t need to be divine to be ethereal.
I drew on that for this bind. There were two separate versions—the original NSFW story and a SFW version as well—that I modeled after a wave crashing onto the shore, two books forming a single image. The wave theme is echoed on the inside as well, in the moon cycle of the footer border, the moon and water iconography of the custom dinkus, and the full-page chapter titles of the sea.
To complement the two volumes, I focused on one of the moments that stood out to me the most from the very start: the scene where Namor leaves Princess Shuri a bouquet of kelp. I made a custom Peller box with HTV of the passage quote on the inside, with multi-colored vinyl on the outside woven together to make kelp. A very special box (even by cool slipcase standards) for two very special books 🙂
Pa’ateni is such a beautiful story that builds on the emotions of grief, compassion, selflessness, and desire in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Read it on AO3, and thank you Neon for telling such a beautiful story.

A wine kit is the box of grape juice and concentrate that we use to produce your wine. Andrew Peller Limited balances and blends the grape juice and concentrate for each style of wine, flash pasteurizes it and ships it to us in a bag in box format. You’ll notice that as our price per bottle goes up the size of the wine kit goes up and the corresponding quality of the finished wine goes up- more juice and concentrate means more body, flavour and aromatics for you. The bigger the wine kit the better the wine!

“Drawing compulsory motherhood”, by Cila Santos (@militanciamaterna), extracted from her website www.militanciamaterna.com.br
Tumblr media
One of the main concepts that permeates feminist causes around motherhood is that of compulsory motherhood. Which is a fundamental term, widely used out there, but apparently very little understood.
What, after all, is compulsory motherhood?
To answer this question with all the details, first I will bring the meaning of the word compulsory:
Compulsory is an adjective originating from the Latin compellere, which means “to take to a place, to take by force” - word formed by com-, which means “together” and pellere, which means “to guide, to take”.
The meaning of Compulsory is understood as something that obligates or compels you to do something. Compulsory is that in which there is an obligation or is mandatory (…). Compulsory is any internal or external force to a person that impels the accomplishment of something - the term is more used to refer to the forces of external action, becoming the quality of what is done obligatorily.
The term compulsory comes from the same root as the word compulsion, something imposed or that must be enforced or obligatorily, and that is also a huge inner tendency to do something, such as, for example, the compulsion for food.
So does that means that when we are talking about "compulsory motherhood" we are talking about "mandatory motherhood"? Are we saying that every woman is "forced" to have children? Yes, that's what we're talking about.
But isn’t a woman choosing? Well, that's the question. The woman chooses nothing. Let's see why:
Socialization for motherhood
When a girl is born, one of her first toys (if not the first) is a doll. Who she will play her first games with, possibly imitating her own caregiver. All people around this child will refer to this doll as "her little girl". All people will refer to this girl as the “mother” of this doll. It is the first function that is taught to a female child, very shortly after she is born.
This girl is unlikely to see her own father caring for her as much as her mother. And even if her parents are not the main caregivers, she will most certainly be cared for by a woman: her grandmother, an aunt, a babysitter. If she has male brothers, she will see that they play with strollers, balls and are never, or almost never, referred to as the “father” of anything. Much less a doll.
This girl will grow up and in fairy tales she will see that the princess is happy when she marries and has children with the prince. She will watch cartoons, soap operas, films, and in all of them the happy ending involves marriage and a pregnant belly. You will see that between a career and a family the woman must choose the family. That a successful woman without a husband and children is unhappy. That a single woman without children is lost, needy, desperate.
She will hear that motherhood is sacred. That this is the biggest and truest love in the world. That a woman is only complete when she has children. You will see the adult women around you are getting pregnant and partying in public while they mourn their pains, difficulties and frustrations in private. You will see these women being treated in a "different", "special" way, because they are pregnant and will naively believe that being a mother really sacralizes one.
She will be encouraged to super-honor her mother, for her "bravery", "dedication", "care", "affection" and will be subtly instructed not to care about the father's negligent and negligent acts. She will learn that “a mother is a mother”, that “being a mother is suffering in paradise”, that the “mother is sacred”, that “being a mother is a divine gift”. You will see the adults around you criticizing “neglectful mothers” all the time and you will begin to believe that a woman's greatest virtue is being a good mother.
This girl will grow up and although everywhere she is bombarded with the romantic imagery of love, passion, marriage and motherhood, she will hardly be educated about her sexuality. She will grow with little or no quality information about sex, sex life, emotional relationships, contraceptive methods, consent. And no, it is not "everyone knows this today" because it is not about knowing how babies are made. It is about talking openly with this girl about what heterocentric relationships are like. About how men act and how to protect themselves for real. On concrete knowledge and dominion over the body itself.
Perhaps this girl will go through her teenage years without becoming pregnant because she has postponed the start of her sexually active life, perhaps because she has introjected so much dread of having children before "being prepared" that she is absolutely strict with contraceptive methods. She will reach adulthood, yearn for a stable relationship and once you get there people will start asking her about when she is having children. She herself will say that she is feeling her "biological clock".
Understand: biological clock does not exist. The name of this is socialization. It is a lifetime being taught, being indoctrinated from all sides for the function of motherhood. Where's men's biological clock? Is it broken?
Even if the woman does not get married, over time she will be asked about having a child. "If you don't want to get pregnant, then why don't you adopt?" No matter how, she MUST become a mother. Even if the mother of a pet. A lifetime of indoctrination for her to care for and unconditionally love another human being does not go unnoticed by any woman. And she will be led to believe every woman without children has an empty existence, a life without purpose, an unhappy and lonely old age.
Tumblr media
Image reads: “being a mother is the most beautiful phase of a woman’s life!”
The uncertainty of contraceptive methods
The only way for a woman who is sexually active with other men to avoid having children is to use a contraceptive method. This possibility puts the full weight of contraception on the woman's back, since most of the methods were developed for her and men were not socialized to worry about fatherhood. This causes any unplanned or unwanted pregnancy to immediately fall into the woman's shoulders with a classic excuse: "if she had a child, it was because she didn't take care of herself". Except this isn’t that simple at all:
·      Misinformation: women do not learn to know their own bodies, their hormonal cycle, to understand how their reproductive system works, to know when they are ovulating. Nor is there quality information on all contraceptive methods available, their pros, cons, effectiveness, cost, adverse effects, how to use them. The most common is that women buy birth control pills on their own or receive a prescription by default from the gynecologist (who also does not conducts more detailed tests or investigations). And this is only in regard to private assistance and women who are minimally more informed and have greater purchasing power. SUS (*Brazil’s unified health system, which is free) distributes a relatively varied number of contraceptive methods such as pills, diaphragms and IUDs, but the distribution suffers, once again, with the systemic misinformation. Although the methods are accessible, there is no efficient guidance on how to use them.
·      Side effects of drugs: many women simply cannot or should not take hormone-based drugs that are the most affordable. These drugs profoundly affect how the female organism works, often bringing significant and uncomfortable changes that women have to deal with, in addition to cases in which the use represents a risk of serious diseases.
·      Male neglect: men completely exclude themselves from the contraception process and are taught that this is the exclusive responsibility of the woman by refraining from preventing unwanted pregnancies. If there is any failure, he blames it on her and simply leaves.
·      No method is 100% safe: exactly that, the most common methods of prevention, namely: pill, condom, the pull-out method all have significant failure rates. Significant. The safest way (although not foolproof) is to use combined methods, that is: condom + pill, condom + diaphragm, condom + calendar-based methods. Yeah, condom always. And men are always very willing to use condoms, aren't they? Or of course not? Men do everything for women to “start preventing themselves” so that they can get rid of the responsibility of condom usage. Getting a man to use a condom in a stable relationship is almost a reason for crisis, it is “proof of distrust”. Observe the table, neither vasectomy nor ligation, surgical methods, offer 100% guarantee.
Tumblr media
Top table: Title: Percentage of failure of contraceptive methods, expressed in number of pregnancies for each 100 women in the first year of usage. First column reads “method”, second column reads “percentage of failure”. In order, the methods are: “calendar-based method”, “billings”, “male condom”, “female condom”, “contraceptive diaphragm”, “spermicide”, “intrauterine device”, “combined pills”, “pills of pure progestogens + lactation”, “trimestral injectables (ADMP-D)”, “combined mensal injectables”, “vasectomy”, “tubal ligation”. Source: Health Ministry, 2002.Bottom table: Title: Efficacy of Contraceptive Methods. Subtitle: this is a simple mathematical study from values of contraceptive efficacy made available by the project BedSider, that can be found at BedSider.org. Horizontal line reads: “Method”, “Typical usage”, “Combined with spermicide”, “combined with the pull-out method”, “combined with conscious fertility”, “combined with contraceptive diaphragm”, “combined with contraceptive diaphragm and pull out method”, “combined with contraceptive diaphragm and conscious fertility”. Vertical column: “Method”, “spermicide, “pull out method”
The fallacy of choice
Choice:
1. act or effect of choosing; selection
2. possibility to select something between two or more; option
3. that or that which was selected or elected; preference
4. ability to assess correctly; discernment; good taste
Choosing something presupposes choosing between two or more options of equivalent weight, making use of personal criteria of personal satisfaction.
Choosing between handing over the wallet to the assailant or dying is not a choice. Choosing to go hungry or accepting underemployment is not a choice.
Another illustrative scenario: You go to the ice cream shop, you want ice cream, there are several flavors. They all look tasty. You indicate that you want the chocolate. You made a choice.
But if you have hypothetically spent your entire life hearing that chocolate ice cream is the best, that you should only be eating chocolate ice cream and that if you don't eat chocolate ice cream you are a terrible person, that you will only be complete when eating chocolate ice cream. If you were repudiated when you said you want to have ice cream of another flavor... could we say that eating chocolate ice cream is a legitimate wish of yours? That is something that you really want and that you are choosing?
Women are constantly tricked into believing that they are really in control of their own lives. They naturalize all the pressure and oppression they have suffered since birth. They live so completely submerged in a state of permanent coercion that they do not even know or recognize a situation in which they can make legitimate choices about themselves. And this liberal fallacy of choice is important to keep women permanently at fault for everything that happens in their lives and for them not to recognize who is truly responsible: the macho and patriarchal system in which we are inserted.
It is possible to say that that a woman who spent all her life hearing that being a mother is the culmination of her own existence; who grew up seeing all the models of how a woman must necessarily be going through the experience of motherhood as redemption; who knows that she will be repudiated, questioned, criticized if she refuses the idea of being a mother; really chose to be pregnant? With the whole scenario that involves the question of motherhood, is it possible to separate what is really a fully personal desire from what is socialization to be a mother?
Choosing presupposes balanced options. When the options are to be a social pariah or to give in to all the pressure that a woman has suffered since birth, is it a choice?
When the possibilities available to ensure that the choice of not being a mother are not one hundred percent safe, when there is NO device that really prevents pregnancy, is motherhood a choice?
How many women can really afford to feel that they have chosen to be mothers? That they did not feel pressured by the family, by the partner, by the “biological clock”? That they were not driven to achieve the pseudo status of importance and “divinity” that they attribute to mothers? Women who became pregnant because they were completely misguided about the functioning of their own bodies, of the available contraceptives and who alone carried the burden of contraception that FAILS if it is not done jointly by the couple?
Women do not "choose" to be a mother. This is imposed as the only possible worthy destination for their lives. And one day they simply answer that self-fulfilling prophecy. Whether consciously or not. And there are no options that guarantee, with total effectiveness, that a woman with an active sex life with another man, will never get pregnant.
All motherhood is compulsory.
What is optional, in our society, is fatherhood.

On May 7, 2017, thousands of members of the Ontario PC party crowded into Ancaster High School to choose a candidate for the new riding of Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas (HWAD).
There was a lot at stake. The public was increasingly disgruntled with Premier Kathleen Wynne, a Liberal. Everyone knew the Tories had a shot.
People entered clutching their IDs, eager to cast their vote. It was rowdy and impatient. People were pushing.
Candidate Jeff Peller said it was a "hostile and unsafe" environment.
"My wife was pushed. Our jaws were on the floor. We couldn't believe it."
But none of this effort in grassroots democracy actually mattered. The vote was rigged. A ballot box was stuffed. By the time the night was over, at least 85 fraudulent ballots were cast to get the desired outcome. It was so rotten, police say, that one of the supposed voters had died a week earlier.
Police say they don't know who did it. Unless someone whispers new information to them, they never will.

The Water Tower
Jury Report
The Water Tower is an extraordinary family second home in Norfolk, where a derelict structure has been brought back into viable use. It is situated above and to the north of the local village, down a lane, surrounded by fields. Its prominent position led to concerns from local residents about overlooking and light pollution, and the impact of inhabiting a structure that once provided functional utility to the village but lay dormant as a decaying local landmark.
photo © Dennis Pedersen
The building is divided into two elements, in Kahn’s terms ‘served and servant spaces’: accommodation to the north, served by a stair tower to the south. Accommodation comprises ground floor kitchen/dining, two floors of bedrooms and an upper living/dining/kitchen tank room at the top.
The stair and lift tower has no windows and faces towards the village, resolving the overlooking and light issues. The stair is formed from two layers of CLT, with an interlayer spacer, with balusters reusing reinforcement from the original tank room. It is a delightful helical stair, spiralling within its rectilinear box and lit from a rooflight at the top. A glazed ‘bridge’ link provides access to the northern accommodation tower, with each room enjoying a fully glazed elevation looking out across arable fields. At the top, the stair tower gives access through a rooflight to a terrace above, with PVs and balustrading.
photo © Dennis Pedersen
The new structure sits within the original metal framing and is made from CLT. It provides structural stiffness to the original tower, which had previously been provided by the weight of the water, but which otherwise would bend and twist under wind loading in its absence. The interior spaces within the new structure are exposed CLT, wrapped in corrugated reflective metal on the exterior. The interior has warmth and a visual ‘weight’ to it from the exposed CLT finish. Externally, the play of light on the corrugations and the reflectivity picking up the colour of the sky and passing weather is a delight. It is a complementary visual contrast to the ironwork of the original structure, which criss-crosses in front of it.
The upper tank room enjoys a ribbon window around three sides, neatly cut through the middle of the tank, providing panoramic views of the Norfolk countryside, and a rooflight giving views of the sky. The interior retains the original exposed metal panels from the plant room, with the original ballcocks and valves being retained as decorative features. The exterior is wrapped in insulated render, painted grey, which transforms the original tank room into a ‘look out’ with a 1930s architectural language.
photo © Dennis Pedersen
The client is a photographer, who, in order to achieve the vision and bring it in within an affordable budget, became the main contractor. The care and attention that has been given to the details, with the photographer’s eye, is evident throughout, as was the approach to retain as much as possible of the original building structure, and to reuse any elements that were surgically removed during construction.
The Water Tower is an example of how an unloved redundant structure can be given a new sustainable life through intelligent design, carefully and diligently applied by a committed and driven client. The effort to preserve and retain as much of the original structure as possible and the rigour of the execution is exemplary. It shows how good retrofitting design can combine low embodied energy and architectural delight.

Okay, I love making a nice thick book, but there's something about boxes that is just SO rewarding. Now, who here has heard of a peller pop-up box? I have to add a disclaimer that even of this post, I have made... three whole boxes, ever. But my personal take is that what's the point of diving into a craft if I'm not gunning for a target far above my skill level? The ambition gives me a thrill, I don't have to feel bad if I fail, and if I succeed, the rush is SUBLIME. And now I have a box with a mechanism (a ribbon) that pops the book out of an inner sleeve when I open it. I'm in love.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was a learning process and a half! The only instructions I can find for this are some handwritten notes from a class in 1990, and the person who posted those notes also posted a number of critiques of the technique as described in the class. Also, the class notes (and addendums) come from an expert perspective, catering to experts. I'm an enthusiastic amateur who's still learning basic competence with leather. I was smart enough not to do a leather slipcase, but overconfident enough to cover my spine and edges in leather, haha. But even though I have a LOT of notes for what to tweak next time, I love it SO MUCH
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I arbitrarily decided to work with my millimeter binding of 'and love unbolts the dark' by blackkat for this experiment, because it's small, it's one of my favorites, I had more of the leather I used for its edges, and I thought I had more of the cover fabric and it would be a good match to one of my yellow marbled papers. As you can probably tell from those photos, things didn't quite go that route!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First, I couldn't find the fabric. It might be in here somewhere, but I have FAR too much fabric, lmao. But I did find a lot of this dark green one, in the same line, and with some lovely color overlap, and a nice aesthetic match for the leather. And then I also realized that the marbled paper was a Lot in comparison to the rest of what I was pulling together. So I left it as a liner for the inner slipcase, to tie into the yellows of the original fabric. Then I dug up an embossed teal paper that matched the dominant palette of the new fabric, and went for broke. And I love this so much, truly, it was a headache trying to wrap my head around the instructions and I still have some minor complaints about the process, but I am so, so pleased right now. I would joke about how little time it will be before I do this again, but... I've already started

Vanessa Obioha captures entertainers and events that made 2019 an OMG! Year
2019 started on a high note for some entertainers and is ending on some sour notes for others. We look back at the exhilarating and shocking moments that literally left our jaws on the floor.
Burna Boy
It was at the 2018 Soundcity MVP Awards held in January this year that Burna’s Boy winning streak began to blaze. At that awards, he scooped four awards including best song of the year for his 2018 hit single ‘Ye’. Burna would go ahead to win other awards such as the BET International Act of the Year and the MTV Europe Music Awards African Act of the Year. Prior to his performance at the international music festival Coachella, Burna grabbed headlines when he condemned the diminutive space the organisers gave him in the promotional ad.
He took to Instagram to express his displeasure, posting that “I really appreciate you. But I don’t appreciate the way my name is written so small in your bill. I am an AFRICAN GIANT and will not be reduced to whatever that tiny writing means. Fix things quickly please.”
The moniker ‘African Giant’ will end up being the title of his next album, a body of work that has received tremendous reviews. Burna was also among the artistes who recorded with award-winning American musician Beyonce for the ‘Lion King’ album. However, the most significant thing that happened to Burna this year was his nomination in the Grammy. His ‘African Giant’ album was nominated in the World Music category. The ‘Anybody’ crooner is confident that he will bring back the gramophone trophy home next year when the awards holds.
Joel Kachi Benson
Benson is one of those documentary filmmakers who allow their works to speak for them. A young man with big ambitions, Benson made history this year when he emerged the first African and Nigerian to win the prestigious Virtual Reality Award at the 2019 edition of the Venice International Film Festival. His surprising win was highly lauded and celebrated in the media. The winning film ‘Daughters of Chibok’ yells the story of Yana Galang whose daughter is among the missing girls from the infamous 2014 Chibok girls abduction. Benson’s immersive storytelling helped to remind the world of the plight of the women who are still waiting for their children to be returned.
Teni the Entertainer:
Teni, the younger of the Apata sisters stamped her presence in the music industry this year with the chart topping hits she released. From ‘Power Rangers’ to her latest single ‘Billionaire’, Teni continues to set new records. After becoming an instant sensation with her breakout song ‘Case’, Teni dominated the airwaves, scooping awards such as the Best New Artist at the 2018 Soundcity MVP Awards, YouTube Trending Artiste on the Rise, and even having her own sold-out concert this yuletide season. Her blazing trail could only suggest that she is almost reaching beyond the stars, particularly now that she wants to become a billionaire.
Mo Abudu:
Not a few has wondered what other glass ceiling the media entrepreneur and filmmaker Mo Abudu will shatter.
This year has seen the founder of EbonyLife Films achieving milestones that almost seem insurmountable. Her film production company produced two films this year ‘Oloture’ and ‘Your Excellency’ with the latter, directed by Jennifer Akindele-Bello raking in over N50 million since its release.
More good news followed for the media personality after she was appointed Director of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, the organisation responsible for staging the world famous International Emmy Awards last year. This year, she received a gold membership card from the organisation for her new role and became the first African woman to chair the 47th Emmy Awards Gala held recently
The most striking achievement of the 55-year-old entrepreneur in 2019 was the unveiling of the EbonyLife Place,a luxury lifestyle venue that offers premium entertainment and hospitality. The majestic building situated on Adetokunbo Ademola Street in Victoria Island is a sight for sore eyes, glittering with opulence at night. Forbes Africa’s Most Successful Woman has consistently shown that she is not resting on her oars. As 2020 beckons, one can only wonder what glass ceiling she will shatter.
Shina Peller:
Few days before the Christmas celebration, Shina Peller, the gentleman behind the popular club Quilox, found himself on the wrong side of the law. Peller has declared a 36-hour marathon clubbing in his club on Sunday, December 22, a long-held tradition of the club according to those who are familiar with the activities of the club. The large influx of club revellers that night led to traffic congestion on the Ozumba Mbadiwe road where the club is located, drawing the ire of motorists who ply that route. By Monday, the Lagos State Government has sealed off the premises of the club for environmental pollution while three cars owned by patronisers of the club were towed. In an interesting turn of events, Peller who was said
to have gone to the Maroko Police Station to resolve the case ended up being arrested. While the police claimed that Peller had invaded the police station with thugs, leading to his arrest, his friends and fans claimed that it was a plot by the police to keep the businessman behind bars. Peller is also a member of the House of Representatives.
Tekno:
Nowadays, it is unclear what direction Tekno’s music is taking. Nonetheless, the young singer has not relented in his ambition to be one of the superstars in the country, even if it means sacrificing decency on the music altar. In August this year, Tekno hugged headlines after a video showing scantily clad women dancing to his song went viral. The risque display on a mobile ad truck was visible to anyone playing the Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge that night. What followed was a cacophony of gasps and sighs that reached an irksome climax when the Lagos State Signage and Advertising Agency, (LASAA), the body responsible for outdoor structures for signage and advertising, wade into the matter, promising to bring the perpetrators to book.
In his defense, Tekno released a statement on his Instagram page, giving details of the events that led to the indecent show.
According to him, he was only using the vehicle to convey his crew to a location since some of the cars scheduled for transportation broke down. He would later be invited by State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, for questioning while LASAA suspended the practicing licence issued to Provision Media System Limited, owners of the unregistered advertisement truck used for indecent exposure.
The singular event generated a discourse in the public space with dissenting voices arguing on the widespread of indecency in the society. Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture, a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Otunba Segun Runsewe condemned the act, urging Nigerians to reject such stain on the Nigerian culture. Tekno received no serious punishment but may perhaps have learnt that being a musician requires a level of responsibility.
Wizkid:
You can call Wizkid a child of luck and you will not be completely wrong. He manages to come out on top each year irrespective of the trend. In 2019, Wizkid arguably made more headlines than any artist. If it’s not about his rumoured relationship with female music star Tiwa Savage, it’s about how he shut down the O2 Arena with his Starboy Fest concert in London. This year made it the second time he’s achieving the feat.
There is also the ingenious collaboration between him and Beyonce ‘Brown Skin Girl’ that dominated the charts as well as won awards. The song was highly praised and with the feature of Beyonce’s daughter Blue Ivy, it garnered more positive reviews. In August, it was reported that the ‘Ojuelegba’ crooner was the first African artist to have eight million monthly listeners on the music streaming platform Spotify. He was also paraded as the most streamed African artiste with over 1.7 billion streams. Before his Starboy fest held on Boxing Day, Wizkid told his fans on Twitter that he would release one last album as Wizkid, suggesting either a retirement from the music scene or a change of name.
Yinka Ayefele:
The year started well for Yinka Ayefele, the gospel music artiste who has been confined to a wheelchair for over two decades due to an accident that affected his spinal cord. He was finally blessed with triplets after searching for the fruit of the womb for more than 10 years on January 18. The news was an exciting and a scary one for the artiste who is also the owner of Fresh FM in Ibadan. For fear of losing them, he hid the news of the birth of his children from the public until June. He held a special dedication ceremony for his triplets in November.
Kizz Daniel:
The legal battle between Kizz Daniel and his former record label G-World Wide Entertainment continued to generate discourse this year; the latest being the threat by the latter to stop the planned concert of the former scheduled for Boxing Day. Yet, Daniel and his legal reps have assumed an unperturbed disposition, insisting that the show will go as planned. The grudges between the two parties stemmed from Daniel’s insistence to exit the label in 2017, a decision the label didn’t take likely. Though Daniel had changed his name, flaunted his own label, G-World Wide Entertainment insists that the singer breached the mandatory buy-out clause and accused him of infringement of the Intellectual property rights of the label. As such, they are demanding he pays back the company’s investment and damages from loss of earnings from scheduled programmes/events prior to the termination.
Tiwa Savage:
So far, Tiwa Savage seems to have had a good year. She landed a deal with Universal Music Group Nigeria immediately her contract with Mavin Records expired, released a visually stunning video for her ’49-99′ single, and involved in the never-ending love storyline with Wizkid. To end the year, she held her own concert where she brought on stage two dominating female music stars, Yemi Alade and Simi. It’s been rumoured that Savage and Alade hardly get along. By bringing her on stage, she quelled every rumour about their relationship.
Don Jazzy:
Don Jazzy would have made major headlines if he settled down this year, a wish his fans have constantly clamoured for. Nevertheless, he was on the spotlight for many reasons this year. One of the significant reasons was the discovery of Rema, the young lad who is slowly becoming the poster boy for the record label. Perhaps, the most outstanding achievement of the producer and singer is the unveiling of the record label creative studios. Jazzy chose to make the announcement on his 37th birthday, stating that it was a gift to himself. The Mavin Creative Studios is located in Lekki while the corporate office of the label is in Victoria Island.
Rema:
The steady rise of Rema to stardom started when Don Jazzy signed him to his record label. His star wattage keeps increasing everyday following his ingenious ability to cross genre and appeal to both local and international audiences. Little wonder he made the summer playlist of former president of the United States Barack Obama. His song ‘Iron Man’ was also ranked No 40 on the Rolling Stones ’50 Best Songs of 2019′.
Big Brother Naija:
MultiChoice Nigeria made history this year by building the first Big Brother Naija House in Nigeria for the fourth season. The house was built from scratch to finish and is said to have gulped millions of Naira. The new facility measures about 1800sqm with an additional 250sqm for support building services such as the sick bay, laundry and artiste lounges. It was designed and built to be bigger and better than any of the Big Brother Africa or Mzansi houses.
The reality show achieved quite some feats. This year’s edition made it the first time a female is winning the competition. Mercy Eke, a video vixen emerged winner after spending a total of 99 days in the house. She was rewarded with N60 million worth of prize. The ‘Pepper Dem’ edition marked the first time the reality show is garnering 240 million votes. Riding on the success of Big Brother Naija, the company will be launching another reality show ‘Ultimate Love’ next year.
Tacha:
Against all odds, Tacha, the disqualified housemate of the Big Brother Naija season four somehow continues to gather clout on social media. Hardly a day she is not on the trending lists on social media, even for mundane things. Tacha was among the 21 housemates who entered the newly built Big Brother Naija House on June 30. The social media sensation was at first pilloried for her haughtiness but it was only a matter of time before she stole the spotlight. From her honest opinions on issues to her heated altercations with fellow housemates, Tacha became the real pepper dem housemate in the house. Despite being nominated many times, she was saved by her unrelenting fans whose loyalty to her is still unwavering. She was however disqualified after getting involved in a violent provocation with fellow housemate Mercy Eke who eventually emerged the winner of the show.
Nevertheless, Tacha is the most influential personality to have emerged from a reality show.
2Baba and Blackface Dispute:
After a series of altercation between afro-pop artiste Innocent Idibia popularly known as 2Baba and his former band member of the defunct Plantashun Boiz, Augustine Ahmedu also known as Blackface, the two finally settled their differences amicably in November. The out-of-court settlement brought to end the back and forth accusations between the former band mates. 2Baba had in 2018 dragged Blackface to court for defamation of character, following several claims made by Blackface across various media platforms. Blackface had accused 2Baba and his manager/business partner, Efe Omorogbe of intellectual property theft, claiming that 2Baba stole his songs ‘African Queen’ and ‘Let Somebody Love You’. He also accused the duo of blacklisting him in the industry, and sabotaging his career. Under the new settlement, it was reported that Blackface agreed to tender apology to 2Baba and to desist from making any such defamatory claims in the future. On their part, 2Baba and his manager graciously accepted the apology and agreed not to proceed with the N50m claim in damages against Blackface, bringing to an end the long drawn media drama that has threatened to completely destroy the Plantashun Boiz legacy.
Cardi B:
Cardi B’s visit to Nigeria was one of the highlights of 2019. The American rapper and media personality was the headline of the Livespot X Festival, organised by Livespot 360 Creative Agency. During her visit, Cardi explored Lagos, promoting the city as a tourism destination for hustlers. She also sampled Nigerian Jollof rice as well as visited a strip club and a motherless Baby home where she doled out gifts to the children. Cardi also nicknamed herself Chioma B and Nigerians likewise renamed her daughter Kulture ‘Ayo’. At the concert, she wowed Nigerians with her performances, twerking on stage to the delight of thousands of music fans who had come to watch her perform. Even after her departure, Nigerians couldn’t stop talking about Cardi B and her love for the country.
Ibironke Shileola:
Ibironke Shileola is one of the reckoning forces in the film and TV content distribution landscape. Since she started her own content marketing company, MicroMedia Marketing Limited, the young lady has been shattering high glass ceilings. In 2014, she recorded a major milestone in her career with the launch of the first Nigerian produced telenovela, ‘Taste of Love’. This year, she pushed the envelope further by opening a cinema exhibition hall, Heritage Cinemas at the Alimosho area of Lagos state, making her the first female Nigerian to own a cinema exhibition hall.
Davido:
It was a good year for Davido in the relationship department. He started the year by displaying his love for Chioma, his fiancée and mother of his son to the world. From surprising her with Valentine’s Day goodies to introducing her to his family members in September, he ensured that the world knew he was serious about making her his official wife. Few days later, he officially proposed to her and by October, the duo welcomed their first child together, a baby boy named Adedeji Ifeanyi Adeleke Jnr. On the music side, he scored some high points by collaborating with American singer Chris Brown for the song ‘Blow my Mind’. The song currently has about 35 million views on YouTube. He also released his sophomore album ‘A Good Time’ this year.
Nigeria’s Oscar Entry:
2019 marked the first time Nigeria will submit a film to the Academy Awards popularly known as the Oscars. Unfortunately, the feeling of fulfilment was short-lived when the Academy committee for the International Feature Film rejected the selected film, ‘Lionheart’ by Genevieve Nnaji for not meeting the language requirements of the awards. The category recognises films that are mostly done in indigenous languages. Their decision was greeted with mixed reactions. While a few argued that the approved selection committee, Nigeria Oscar Selection Committee (NOSC) chaired by filmmaker and director Chineze Anyaene should have met every requirement, others argued that English was Nigeria’s official language. Out of the 95-minute running time of the film, only 11 minutes featured indigenous language.
Nativeland Concert:
It was a sad edition for organisers of the annual music concert Nativeland this year. The show which was held at Muri Okunola Park on December 19, suffered a major setback when the VIP stage caved in as Fireboy was performing ‘Party Scatter’. The native gods must have been listening to him as the stage chose that particular moment to collapse. Scores of people reportedly sustained various degrees of injuries. The organisers blamed the overwhelming crowd for the mishap and promised to get a better venue next year.
Filmhouse Luxury Cinemas:
The leading cinema chain in Nigeria continued its quest to create innovative cinema experiences for moviegoers this year by launching the Coca-Cola MX4D Motion EFX Theatre at Landmark Retail Boulevard in Victoria Island, Lagos. The theatre is the newest evolution in 4D cinema experience, providing an immersive environment, where one feels the action on the screen from the built-in motion effects in the seats and theatre.
It was in April that Filmhouse sealed the deal with American cine-tech giants, MediaMotion to build the theatre which is also a first in West Africa. The new theatre boasts six cinema screens (one MX4D, four premium screens, and one cube), with over 300 seater, a fully stocked bar, a kids’ party area, and a self-service station. The company which currently boasts of more than 10 cinemas across the country is working towards increasing that number in 2020.
Tonto Dikeh:
Known for courting controversies, this year saw the Nollywood actress delivering different shades of her personality in the public space. From the tell-it-all interview with On-Air Personality Daddy Freeze where she claimed her ex-husband Olakunle Churchill was diabolical and a 40- seconds man, to the social media war between her and popular blogger Stella Dimokorkus who reported that she was arrested in Dubai.
Dikeh, who doesn’t mince words, was again dragged into the public arena when she shared pictures from a conference organised by Modul University in Dubai. It turned out that she didn’t make any speech with an audience rather it was an audio conference. Though she tried to redeem her pride by posting an appreciative message from the message, it did little to clear the conceived perception from that act. Recently, she made her love for plastic surgery known, eliciting backlash and admiration from detractors and fans.
Living in Bondage Sequel:
Charles Okpaleke and Ramsey Nouah made history this year by producing a sequel to the supposedly film that birthed Nollywood ‘Living in Bondage’. The sequel ‘ Living in Bondage: Breaking Free’ which followed the story of Andy’s (the star character of the original story) son Nnamdi received critical praise for the directorial expertise of Nouah and the story angles explored. The film marked the directorial debut of the actor. At the box-office, the film earned a total of N124.5 million, making it the tenth highest-grossing Nigerian film of all time.
Naira Marley:
Hate him or love him, one thing is certain: Naira Marley’s growing influence is yet to wane. His popularity seemed like a daydream. It wasn’t until he was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) on allegations of e-fraud did Marley began to gain a cult following. His arrest followed the release of his viral song ‘Am I a Yahoo Boy’. His fans compared him to the Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti after he was taken into custody, a comparison that the true disciples of Fela didn’t take lightly. Notwithstanding, Marley understood the power of publicity and used his time in prison to rise to stardom. He released a single while in prison and has continued to release more singles such as ‘Soapy’, describing the ordeal of prisoners to his advantage. But the longevity of his fame is a question that lingers on the lips of critics.

List of the top 10 best fast food mascots ever. These popular advertising heroes are the top 10 fast food mascots that are most memorable. Fast food restaurant branding's most iconic mascots. ➡️ SUBSCRIBE to BabbleTop! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX--mGSg0UwDjl7MDL8H5Jg?sub_confirmation=1 For whatever reason, someone, somewhere, decided that fast food restaurants, like sports teams, need mascots. They give us all the best fast food advertisements and, more often than not, they allow for some serious comic relief. To help separate the good from the bad, we’ve put together a list of our ten favorite fast food mascots of all time. If you enjoyed this list of the top 10 fast food mascots. Make sure to comment: #mascots #fastfood #branding TIMESTAMPS: 0:25 Jack – Jack in the Box 1:51 Bee – Jollibee 3:14 Where’s the Beef Lady – Wendy’s 4:55 Cuppy – Dunkin 6:22 Little Caesar – Little Caesar’s 7:33 The Hamburglar – McDonald’s 8:56 Wendy – Wendy’s 10:08 Colonel Sanders – KFC 11:32 The Burger King – Burger King 13:06 Ronald McDonald – McDonald’s SUMMARIES: - For seventy years, Jack in the Box has been a favorite among fast food fans, particularly those living on the West Coast. - Jollibee mascot is probably the most good-spirited one on the list, but probably the last one you’d want to mess with. - Typically known as the “Where’s the Beef Lady”, this Wendy’s mascot is actually named Clara Peller. - Cuppy looks identical to the cup in the Dunkin Donuts logo. - Originally the restaurant’s silent hero, Little Caesar was given the famous phrase “Pizza! Pizza!” in the eighties. - The Hamburglar we all know and love looks more like a Muppet on the run from the law. - The Wendy’s mascot started off as just a logo for the brand but, eventually, Wendy Thomas starred as her in the restaurant’s commercials. - Like the Wendy’s mascot, KFC’s Colonel Sanders was based on a real person. - Making Burger King’s mascot a literal king was the only logical decision. Out of all the mascots on this list, the Burger King is probably the one who’s gone through the most transformation. - The red haired, yellow jumpsuit wearing clown hasn’t been around quite as long as McDonald’s, but the restaurant hadn’t been around long when Ronald McDonald first appeared. 📺 Top 10 Untold Truths of Fast Food MASCOTS!!! https://youtu.be/SNBOuqyu6rQ ➡️ SUBSCRIBE to BabbleTop! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX--mGSg0UwDjl7MDL8H5Jg?sub_confirmation=1 🥳 JOIN and become a BabbleTop member! https://www.youtube.com/babbletop/join 👕 Check out our MERCH! https://ift.tt/2xcFumO 🔥 Our Most Popular VIDEOS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOvb3ZRIwh0&list=UUX--mGSg0UwDjl7MDL8H5Jg All clips used for fair use commentary, criticism, and educational purposes.
