Song Review: Little Feat - “Spanish Moon” (Alternate Version)
Little Feat’s alternate version of “Spanish Moon” finds the band playing live in the studio, sans the horns and backgrounds that accentuate the album version.
In that regard, it sounds more like an attempt at a backing track or a rehearsal take - a notion reinforced up by Lowell George’s decision to abort the work in progress.
“Let’s stop it and start it again, please,” he says as the song comes to an abrupt halt.
The track previews the forthcoming - no release date yet - deluxe edition of Feats Don’t Fail Me Now, which comes with a remaster, studio outtakes and the band’s previously unreleased Feb. 1, 1975, show in Paris.
The funky groove is there and the lyrics about whisky, bad cocaine and deathly women are as slyly engrossing as ever. But mostly, this “Spanish Moon” serves to illustrate the power of brass and brassy vocals to vault a strong number into classic status.
And Sound Bites still doesn’t buy the alternate-version tag.
Grade card: Little Feat - “Spanish Moon” (Alternate Version) - B

Więzienie nas pochłania i trawi.
Dawniej, zanim jeszcze zbudowano ten świat niezgody, to miejsce musiało wzbudzać zachwyt, porośnięte brzozami, klonami, sumakiem octowym i wysokimi trawami położonymi przez wędrówki dzikich zwierząt.

On this date in the world of music…
October 26th
2019 - Paul Barrere
American musician Paul Barrere died age 71. He was a member of Little Feat, which he joined in 1972. Barrere later played with Phil Lesh and Friends and also toured with Bob Dylan.
2013 - Quincy Jones
Producer Quincy Jones was suing the estate of the late Michael Jackson for millions of dollars. He said the singer's estate and Sony Music Entertainment improperly re-edited songs to deprive him of royalties and production fees. Mr Jones stated that they also broke an agreement giving him the right to remix master recordings for albums released after Jackson's death in 2009.
2011 - Aerosmith
Aerosmith were forced to delay a concert in South America after Steven Tyler fell in his hotel bathroom. The singer suffered cuts to his face and lost two of his teeth ahead of a concert in Asuncion, Paraguay. He was said to have received stitches and had emergency dental work, forcing the gig to be postponed by 24 hours.
2010 - Top Earning Dead Celebrities
Forbes Magazine released its annual list of the Top Earning Dead Celebrities. Michael Jackson led the way at $275 million, Elvis Presley was second at $60 million and John Lennon was fifth at $17 million.
1984 - Ozzy Osbourne
19-year-old John D. McCollum killed himself with a .22 caliber handgun after spending the day listening to Ozzy Osbourne records. One year later, McCollum's parents took court action against Ozzy and CBS Records, alleging that the song "Suicide Solution" from the album Blizzard of Ozz contributed to their son's death. The case was eventually thrown out of court.
1979 - AC/DC
AC/DC appeared at The Mayfair, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, supported by Def Leppard. The bands were booked to appear the night before but after a fire at the venue in the afternoon, the show was cancelled.
1970 - Janis Joplin
A wake was held at the Lion's Share in San Anselmo, California to celebrate the life of Janis Joplin. The singer who died of an accidental drugs overdose had left $2,500 in her will to throw a wake party in the event of her demise. The party was attended by her sister Laura and Joplin's close friends; Brownies laced with hashish were unknowingly passed around amongst the guests. Joplin was cremated in the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary in Los Angeles; her ashes were scattered from a plane into the Pacific Ocean and along Stinson Beach.
1968 - San Francisco Pop Festival
The two day San Francisco Pop Festival was held at Alameda County Fairgrounds. The Animals, Procol Harum, Iron Butterfly, Jose Feliciano, Deep Purple, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Canned Heat all appeared.
1966 - Alma Cogan
English singer Alma Cogan died of stomach cancer aged 34. She scored the 1955 UK No.1 single 'Dreamboat', plus 20 other UK Top 40 hits. In the 50s Cogan was the most consistently successful female singer in the UK and the youngest female act to top the charts during the 50s.
1965 - The Beatles
Queen Elizabeth II invested The Beatles with their MBE's at Buckingham Palace, London. According to an account by John Lennon the group smoked marijuana in one of the palace bathrooms to calm their nerves. Many former recipients gave their MBE's back in protest, to which John Lennon responded "Lots of people who complained about us receiving the MBE received theirs for heroism in the war, for killing people." He continued: "We received ours for entertaining other people. I'd say we deserve ours more."
1962 - The Rolling Stones
The Rolling Stones (known as The Rollin' Stones), and consisting of Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, Brian Jones pianist Ian Stewart and drummer Tony Chapman recorded their first demo tape at Curly Clayton Studios in Highbury, London. Today Live!  Singer/Songwriter/Producer, Steve Postell and I go back to Bleecker Street in the heady daze of the New York club scene. I was booking the Rock 'N Roll Café and Steve was fresh outta Pure Prairie League. I was RockStar struck. I booked him that day and have continued to for the past 30 + years wherever I went and whatever I did. When I had my book launch at The Federal it was Steve I went to. He put together the most kick-ass jam band, as he always does. Did you ever see his Night Train Music Club? I did, a gazillion times. A rotation of the best players on the planet, a bunch of whom comprise now, with Steve, The Immediate Family.
Steve won two HOLLYWOOD MUSIC IN MEDIA awards for best song in the Americana/Roots and The Blues categories. His last CD features guests including David Crosby, John Oates, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, and Jennifer Warnes. Steve was project coordinator for the Shout Factory anniversary release of the Jennifer Warnes/Leonard Cohen project, Famous Blue Raincoat, and is the composer for the documentary Dying to Know, about Timothy Leary and Ram Dass, narrated by Robert Redford. Steve recorded and mixed Ravi Shankar’s final two performances, both on DVD. He produced CDs for Dan Navarro (whose hit songs include Pat Benatar’s “We Belong”) and Weather Report alumni Alphonso Johnson, both of which are charting in their respective categories. Steve contributed guitar to David Crosby’s last solo album, Sky Trails, and is currently writing with Crosby for an upcoming release. Steve’s CD, Walking Through These Blues, was released on VIVID SOUND. This CD features a host of guests, including David Crosby, Iain Matthews, Tony Furtado, Bekka Bramlett, Jeff Pevar, Greg Leisz, and many others.
Steve performed on and co-produced a CD for renowned producer/guitarist and songwriter Danny (Kootch) Kortchmar. The CD features a star-studded cast including guest appearances by James Taylor, Jackson Browne, David Crosby, and Michael McDonald. This CD led to the formation of the beforementioned, The Immediate Family, which in addition to Steve includes legendary session men Danny Kortchmar, Leland Sklar, Waddy Wachtel & Russ Kunkel.  Since forming, The Immediate Family has sold out 2 tours in Japan where they recorded a live CD. They have released numerous videos and dropped a second EP of new material on Quarto Valley Records. Their first single, Cruel Twist, reached the top 10 on the blues charts. The band will be featured in a documentary by “Wrecking Crew” director Denny Tedesco. Their new full-length record will be released in conjunction with the rollout of the film. Steve continues to preside over his band THE NIGHT TRAIN MUSIC CLUB, a rotating collaboration that has featured many legendary artists including David Crosby, Jackson Browne, David Pack, Paul Barrere, Steve Ferrone, Albert Lee, Jeff Bridges, and numerous others.
Did I mention Steve has the voice of an angel? I did now. We’ll no doubt get a delectable sample.
