I’m watching the Korean version of “Designated Survivor” for the first time. Based on the first episode, it’s…surprisingly better? It follows the story of the original show, but it felt like the Korean team had a better grasp of the story than the Americans. What I mean is:
1) Park Mu-Jin feels more thought out than Tom Kirkman. In this version, you just had a feeling that this guy should NOT be President. Which is not a bad thing, it’s a sign of good character development. Mu-Jin is a good man and extremely intelligent…but he’s clumsy, has severe anxiety, and has no political sense. Don’t get me wrong, Kiefer Sutherland was good, but I never really saw him as the helpless underdog (maybe it’s because I couldn’t see him as anything but Jack Bauer). In the Korean version, you just feel extremely sorry for this guy and that South Korea is screwed under his leadership.
2) The seamless transition to Korean politics. You just get a sense that the Korean team knew how to make their version of the show work. The move from discussing Muslim terrorism to North Korea/the Korean War doesn’t feel forced at all. While not necessarily an improvement on the original, it shows that the writers were thinking hard about how to handle the change in setting and politics.
(Side note: The fear that the Koreas are going to go to war is a LOT scarier than the turmoil in the original show, imo)
3) The slower pace led to better characterization, especially for Park Mu-Jin (see above).
Overall, great first episode.

Give it up to Cha Young-jin who acknowledged that italicized 'oh' revelation like he just received some kind of (not urgent, but most certainly) an important phone notification

My drawing of Park Mu Jin, the Acting President from Designated Survivor: 60 Days. This series is based on a premise that might be considered fantastic: what happens if a good man accidentally comes to power? And here he is, the good man :)

Who is Mu-Deok?
Crown Prince Go Won: Filthy Mu-Deok? A stinky, insolent peasant, always causing trouble! But only I am allowed to say that. I’ll execute anyone who harms her.
Jin Cho-Yeon: Jang Uk’s maid. There’s something weird going on with her, and she always manages to cause problems. For me specifically.
Seo Yul: the soul of my childhood sweetheart and a dangerous assassin, inhabiting the body of an innocent girl. She is a monster but not the way people think. It will break my heart to kill her.
Park Dang-Gu: Uk’s maid! We all think she’s great! There seems to be a lot of trouble around her which is such a shame bc she’s lovely!
Jang Uk: my master, my servant. My love, my killer. My best friend, my torturer. The only one who knows me. Truly the other half of my soul. She would break any rule to be with me, and I would bend the laws of the universe for her. My wife, my obsession. My protector and my delicate bird egg to protect. No she doesn’t like me back.
Naksu: idk man I just live here

Always have soft spot for couple aligned with grief and guilt
Tumblr media
After JWDS I've found new hyperfixation that is Kim Mu Chan x Kwon Seok Joo from the (another) crime drama The Killing Vote.
About their grief and guilt, JW lives with guilt for the crime he didn't commit just because he's the police and the only son of that man. MC lives with guilt of be unable to catch the killer's accomplice, unable to save SJ's daughter. DS grieving for his twin sister and he even been accused for killing her, just like SJ, grieving for his daughter and accused for the crime he didn't commit. DS chose to become a cop to catch the murderer while SJ turned into the executor himself but anger and guilt consumed him because the accomplice (or the real killer?) is still out there.
For something brighter, there's some of their scenes that I like
Tumblr media
Compare to jwds, sjmc (can I call them that?) is the same but different. Everyone around jwds been aware of their "special" relationship even before them realised it, meanwhile with sjmc their relationship is so mysterious that makes everyone suspicious lol.

"Kim Seok Joo's No.1 Fan"
Seok Joo and his belief 😢
Tumblr media
*me every freaking time
Tumblr media
I swear 9/10 fanfics of them will have that 'hyung' thing just like 'juwon-ah' in jwds's fanfics and I already saw 2.
The drama only has 12 episodes but only 1 ep per week makes it seems super long and there were even no new ep the previous week. The film is already so underrated as it is *sign*

The most underrated Alchemy of Souls moment is when the Unanimous Assembly goes bonkers over the ice stone. You have the old, esteemed leaders of Daeho getting into fist fights (side note: the actor playing Heo Yeom is hilarious), as well as Park Jin and Jin Ho-Gyeong getting into a legitimate argument that ends with Songrim soldiers drawing blades and surrounding the room. The situation is tense, uncertain, and a serious conflict looms on the horizon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then you have Jang Uk strolling up in the most dramatic fashion possible with an in-verse drumroll (like, this wasn't just OST designed to make the scene epic for viewers. Mu-deok beat a gong for him and if that isn't true love, I don't know what is) before apologizing for interrupting their passionate discussion (read: slyly insulting all the elders for being a bunch of squabbling children), claims to know the will of a legendary hero that's been dead for decades, and cites his source as a random piece of poetry Park Jin gave him as a trap like five episodes ago.
Tumblr media
And the best part is that it works.
Everyone's stunned and confused but can't do anything (even if his own friends think he's lying to stall for time), and Park Jin is flat-out done. He trusts Uk enough not to intervene but look at this man, he's so tired.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10/10 perfect scene.
Bonus points for CP catching a glimpse of Uk minding his own business in the corner while the mages were fighting and instantly clocking in that something was going down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also I can't tell if this is Mu-deok "forgetting" to bow or Uk remembering to bow because he wants something from Go-won later.

Honestly, if they make the crown prince the villain, it would be such a waste. His character is so well-written, it would be a disservice doing that to him.

Various love triangles and arrows (if it doesn't have three lines it ain't a triangle) in Alchemy of Souls.
Classic love arrows:
Tumblr media
[Jin Cho-yeon unrequited with Jang Uk, requited with Park Dang-gu]
Tumblr media
[Master Lee unrequited and Park Jin requited with Maid Kim]
Line of Disappointment:
Tumblr media
[Soi-i unrequited for Seo Yul, Seo Yul unrequited for Mu-deok/Naksu]
The Rare Double Loss to the Same Person in Different Bodies Love Arrow:
Tumblr media
[Heo Yun-ok unrequited twice to Jang Uk, Mu-deok and Bu-yeon requited to Jang Uk]
Triple Love Arrow:
Tumblr media
[Go Won & Seo Yul unrequited, Jang Uk requited to Mu-deok]
*technically the Seo Yul/Cho Yeong love thing is more complicated, I guess once but no longer requited? Anyway, this is a love arrow of lies because we all know the truth is...
Double unrequited and double requited love triangle:
Tumblr media
[Go won unrequited to both Mu-deok/Bu-yeon and Jang Uk, the former two are double requited]
See! Three whole lines! It's a real triangle! Also, you have to requite the bottom twice to make up for the double unrequited above, it's just math
Pity infographic for Go Won:
Tumblr media
[Go Won and his turtle named Turtle, requited]
And all the younger people together, in a love map:
Tumblr media
[Amalgamation of all the ones above, except the one with Maid Kim]

Underrated moments from season 1 are those where Park Jin is trying to reveal the conspiracy of the century, fighting and losing in a war of politics & magic zombies with Jin Mu….. and just as he thinks he’s discovered somebody using dark nefarious magic, not one but TWO young couples involving his idiot kids declare their eternal love in dramatic fashion. I understand why he’s greying already
