the capacity for these people to hate Aang so much for essentially not being a super serious grouch despite the series implicitly associating wisdom with not being hung up over looking silly just, it amazes me. they're just so ANGRY that Aang isn't like every other generic hero archetype
Aang's entire personality was clearly cemented as "fun loving" since episode one and ppl are angry at Aang for *checks notes* loving fun?
Also idk how miserable you need to be to watch a full 61 episodes of a show where you hate the main character. Is that a form of self harm lol

yknow it occurs to me that Zapp Brannigan is less of a parody of Kirk SPECIFICALLY, both in terms of pop culture impact and the actual character, in that while he spoofs the speaking patterns of Kirk's actor, he seems to be SPECIFICALLY a parody of the 'captain space defender of earth' character archetype, taken to its most logical extreme?
There's definitely something to this!
I mean: there are clear Kirk or Kirk-adjacent elements -the speech pattern as you say, the paunch(tho that's more movie-era Kirk), the Star Fleet miniskirt- but there's more than a little of Flash Gordon and the many, MANY Pulp SciFi Space Captains in Brannigan.
I'd also like to add that Groening's work has always been satirical at heart so, while def being done in the language of SciFi and certainly poking fun at certain characters and tropes in the genre, he might have also been hoping to poke holes in all the Hero-Generals and political chickenhawks of that era.

i am curious what your corrupted AU is?
Oh thanks for asking! :D It's basically any universe where my self insert's magical dimension-jumping watch gets "corrupted" by whatever villain's magic is in said universe, making her become the main villain of the story, or at least someone who will carry out any dark deeds for the main villain if she doesn't choose to "dethrone" them. My self insert is normally the hero of any universe or is someone who assists the hero; the corrupted AU is the exact opposite.
I'm not 100% sure what powers she'd have, I just know it involves purple flames somehow. I LOVE the idea of her having these... what would I call them... cupid's arrows? That she can conjure? And she can stab or shoot the arrows through someone's chest, and the arrow will dissolve entirely once it hits the target, and cause the target to become compliant or hypnotized in some way, draining them of their energy. It doesn't physically hurt them, it just exhausts them and makes them get cute lil heart-eyes.
She's normally super supportive of her evil villain beloveds anyways (more like, verbally encouraging, instead of promoting, y'know, murder), but in the corrupted AU she just... doesn't have morals?? I guess?? 😂 She will DO the killing, and in most cases, become the main villain herself. There is potential for there to be a Corrupted AU in any and every universe I self insert into, but I rarely write for it. Sometimes I make art... in all honesty, this AU is an excuse for me to draw myself with glowing purple eyes. That's really it 😂 it's there for the ~Aesthetic™~

so yeah in mythology Circe is VERY well known for cursing people and turning them into animals like pigs and cattle. some accounts also depict her as cursing her half sister Scylla into a horrific man eating monster because someone preferred Scylla over Circe. Circle is also mentioned as ritually purifying Medea of having murdered her brothers to assist her husband Jason
OH, that bitch. My english class mostly skipped over that part of the Odyssey. All I really know of it is the two sea monsters and Odysseus kicking the crap out of his wife's suitors.

do you have a favorite Warframe? My personal favorite from when I played it some years back was Rhino, though my original one was Mag. I've always thought Grendel looked like a ton of fun (no pun intended this time) but I was never able to actually get to that point where you can farm his parts.
I've only just started playing warframe for the first time last month! I chose Volt as my first frame and he's been a TON of fun. I'm still not 100% sure i understand a lot of the grind-based mechanics, but i am starting my first new frames now, which are Vauban and Rhino. I'm excited to see what their playstyles are like!
I'll keep you updated for sure!

also i think about an AU idea where the basic premise is Finn developing and retaining all the episodic or temporary powers he got, but he keeps them, but honestly the only ones that come to mind are the magic spells from that one episode where he got scammed by Bufo the tadpole wizard collective and his Minecrafting telekinesis from The Tower, and also him developing a power set similar to Fern's, and that's it. I genuinely can't remember any other one off powers he showed at some point! Do you remember any?
Finn's immunity to electricity that he got in Flute Spell came back in Reboot, coincidentally triggering a huge characterization for Finn and Susan.
He also got his Astral Projection ability, I wonder if that becomes useful from time to time or how much he cared to develop it.

'#oh man i saw mai and vetinari in the same sentence and almost blacked out' in the sense that you don't like the idea, or that you DO like it??
Oh! I do like it, a lot. Sorry yeah I can see how my tag wasn't very clear lol. Vetinari is one of my favorite characters of all time, and I think Mai is similar to him in a lot of ways (the knives, the snark, the quietly calculating type of personality, etc.)

I've saw the creators of The Amazing Digital Circus compare it to I spy (never heard of) and I have no mouth and must scream (heard of). I feel future episodes will make these parallels more prominent while giving its own twist, but the vibe it passed me was from dark fairy stories (in particular, the adaption of Changeling The Lost).
Caine is the creator of that world and he's likely to be an AI, there's something so alien in how he's so whimsical and excited for everything, while being completely unable to understand and empathize with the poor mortals that he brought to his realm. Although in dark fairy stories the intentions of the fairies are translated into something dark and eldritch, the kids show aesthetic does differentiate the digital circus from other settings.
Caine doesn't seem to be malicious, so far, and thus he's also unable to think about his actions in a way that would dissuade him from doing what he's doing. A digital fairy. He mutated the poor mortals he brought to him realm and then discards them when they can't take it anymore and let themselves to be abstracted.
I really wonder how it'll go from there. Usually dark fairy stories don't tend to have happy endings, things worse than death might await the mortals and, even when they escape, they have to deal with the scars. So far, for the pilot, it seems it'll be something like that.

i remember a thoery back in the heyday of the korra fandom that i think applies: that Amon is using bloodbending to disrupt the crown chakra, filling it with fear and anxiety to disrupt and break the spirits of the benders, stripping them of their powers. Notice how all the people depowered by Amon are just completely broken afterwards, to an extent even greater than losing such an important power would suggest. So conversely Korra's energybending was probably dissolving that artificially imposed blockage?
So if that's the case maybe the benders who lost their bending to Amon could have also just unlocked their Chakras like Aang did to master the avatar state?
Idk i feel like that's a stretch bc how would he use bloodbending for psychological damage? In that case he would need to bend electricity to control neurological pathways in the brain, and we haven't seen a firebender being able to do that yet.

one thing about the Tracer Bullet bits in calvin and hobbes that I think about in retrospect is that it implies that Calvin is a HUGE noir fan, at least enough to convincingly do the trappings of the genre. His fantasies are usually him playing out his usual day through the lens of something he knows well, and the Tracer Bullet persona is a noir parody, so he knows the noir thing inside and out! (And given Spaceman Spiff, he's also apparently a fan of the Buck Rogers era of sci fi.)
that's actually hilarious! The idea of this kid somehow getting his hands on noir stuff enough to be this capable of it is ridiculous. The implication that he's experienced the "Legs as long as the litany of crimes i've seen" kind of dialogue is just TOO MUCH XD

so here is a question! One thing I think about a lot is how Adventure Time's plot was ad libbed and improvised, and that its kind of a thesis class in how to make pantsing look really genuine, but I do think a lot about AUs that rewrite the series overall to take into account later developments (like Ice King being Marceline's Dad) and so I think about things like what to keep, what to avoid? Things like... would it be better to avoid Finn's Jerk Arc after his break up with FP, or is it too important to his overall character? Would it be better to not have Ice King as a villain at any point, or is his fall to madness absolutely integral to his character? Should Finn's crush on PB be kept as significantly as it was, or should Huntress Wizard be introduced earlier to focus on that? (And of course my Finn/Marceline/PB power trio is always important!) So what sort of things do you think would be best to do here?
I kept thinking on this for a long time (hence why it took me so long to reply, gomen).
I don't know how much of everything we ended up seeing was in Pen's mind from the beginning. We know stuff like IK/Simon or Finn/Susan/Humanity was planned from the start, but other stuff definitely came along as the other boarders/writers brought up ideas. Adventure Time was planned to be serious, but how much we don't know.
I think, at least the examples you mention, ended up being necessary and it's why I still love this series. I hated Finn's jerk arc, but it ended up helping me warm up to the moment he showed growth. Ice King's story wouldn't feel as tragic if he hadn't been a villain before and (again) if Finn didn't end up taking the diplomatic route with him after the reveal of his identity, when he realized he too was a human, a cursed one. I wish Huntress Wizard appeared more to help Finn mature, but that kinda would make her just a prop I guess.
Almost every major happening in AT is essential to it's narrative (and some minor ones too!) so you have to be careful when making AUs. AUs are mostly fun "what if?"s and don't require much thought (and honestly people today don't make AUs like old fandom used to, sorry for the honesty). But if you go serious you have a lot of questions to answer: at what exact point does your universe deviate from the main timeline? What characters will disappear with your actions? How does it affect the PB/Finn/Jake cycle? Fionna and Cake should be a perfect example of how fucked up Adventure Time's Universes can get when you kill a mosquito. Proceed with caution

Favorite season: Spring! The first time it’s sunny and above 65 after endless winter is one of the top ten human experiences. Plus it’s means green growing things and rain storms with lots of worm friends :)
Comfort foods: homemade Mac & cheese and a rotisserie chicken. I also have a tradition of going to get a heath milkshake from cookout at the end of a long school or work week.
Do you collect anything: smooth and interesting looking sticks. I have eight now. I unintentionally collect art supplies(I need to find something else to ask for in Secret Santas). I am also fond of noting down any words I particularly like such as snicked, razzmatazz, and galactica.
Favorite drink: favorite warm drink is a London fog. My college cafe used Hubbard and Craven’s earl grey de la crème and I have yet to find a brand that can compare TT^TT Favorite cold drink is a iced latte with rasberry, chocolate, and mint syrup. Strange combination but it works somehow.
Favorite music artists: ahhh too many. 21 Pilots, Cosmo Sheldrake, Vexento(electronic music), Imagine Dragons, Alec Benjamin, Fall Out Boy, and Joe Hisaishi(the guy who did a bunch of the studio ghibli scores).
Current Favorite songs: “Lotus” and “Always” by Vexento; My Dream, My Addiction by Fish in a Birdcage; Coastline by Hollow Coves; and I’m Here by Aiobahn
Favorite fics: favorite Avatar: The Last Airbender fic is I Promised You No Such Thing As Heaven by wanderNavi, truly phenomenal world building and spirit shenanigans; Favorite Percy Jackson fic is Tragedies & Time by thein273, a lovely take on bitter, morally grey Percy; Favorite Marvel fic is The Hollows by ealcynn, scratches every post-Captain America: The Winter Soldier itch I ever had; Favorite Naruto fic is Paper Moon by Anjelle, My go-to comfort fic <3; Favorite My Hero Acadamia fic is throw me a goddamn rope by mutalune, peak dadzawa.
Ahh wow this took a while. Now for the next victims. @smileytiger28 @paragonrobits @beary-tics @2-an @sagewiththyme @alternamarian participate if you want. If not just know I am thinking of and appreciate you :)
