i really like ocean liners i really do, especially the ugliest ones like SS Hellenic Prince, but where's the love for the seagoing workhorses?
where's the love for container ships? and im not talking about the megaships like the triple E class either (which are also cool ,don't get me wrong). Where's the love for the panamax container ships? the autorack ships? The crude and chemical tankers? the LNG carriers? The bulk and grains ships? The break bulks?

From “Goodbye to a Neighborhood” by Delger Erdensesanaa:
In the small Gulf Coast city of Freeport, a pretty mint-green house stands alone in a neighborhood called the East End, surrounded by what looks at first glance like a meadow. Closer examination reveals the grass is growing over recently emptied lots where other houses once stood. Now driveways lead to nowhere.
Pam Tilley, a retired military nurse who grew up here, returned in February to see her childhood home one last time. She was there to clear out her 98-year-old father Henry Jones’ belongings. Calendars on the wall were still turned to February 2020, the last full month anyone lived there. For the past three years, Jones has been living with another daughter in the Houston suburb of Katy, originally because of the COVID-19 pandemic but now because he no longer owns this home.
The commissioners of nearby Port Freeport have condemned Tilley’s family property by eminent domain. The port is expanding to accommodate bigger Panamax container ships, and has been buying up the East End bit by bit. Any day, the mint-green house will be demolished as its neighbors have been.
Tumblr media
The neighborhood, until recently a vibrant community, was initially formed by segregation of the city’s Black residents in the 1930s into a few square blocks. When Tilley was growing up, the modus operandi was that “you have to live here or nowhere,” she said. She remembers that older African-American residents like her parents felt, “if we have to live here, it’s going to be the best community ever.” They made the best of the situation, and turned the East End into a happy place to live.
Back in 2017, lawyers for the nonprofit Lone Star Legal Aid stepped in to help residents make a federal civil rights complaint against Port Freeport, as well as the City of Freeport, to several federal agencies that have provided funding to the port and the city. The Department of Homeland Security finally agreed to investigate the case last year.
But the process has taken so long that almost everybody from this close-knit community is already gone.It was like being “one of the last on the planet,” Tilley said. Only one other family from her tight-knit African-American community remains at home.
A few East End families still have individual lawsuits pending against Port Freeport. Tilley and her family were set to go to court earlier this month in an effort to dispute the port’s valuation of Henry Jones’ home. Instead, after years of contentious negotiation, the family and the port recently reached a settlement, which Tilley called “forced.” She would have preferred to be heard in court, but her family was worn out from years of fighting.

My knee was a "bit"sore on monday...enough that they kept asking if everything was ok at work...
Yesterday off...went through a heap of panamax and about half a tube of night-time deep heat...
Out for dinner...knee felt good....
Got home, and it decided to hit critical mass as the front door shut...
Dr thinks it's a torn meniscus...which is pretty bloody unbrilliant...
So much for going job hunting this year at all!
Edit:ultrasound and xrays just done a few minutes ago,so off to my dr on friday...and the results can be checked on my phone,too...once upon a time, you'd get that big white envelope, with a warning not to open it...but everybody did, because stickybeaks, lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I could post the ultrasound as well...but I don't know what the squiggles mean...though...I also don't know if these are good or bad knees in these x-rays...edit on Friday
Another edit:osteo and tendonitis...trip to the physio on tuesday...love how they call it "minimal tenderness over LCL"...minimal...most of the day I have little tweety birds fluttering around my head, lol

Tumblr media

The world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht. Sea Eagle II is a magnificent 81m/266ft three-masted Panamax schooner, created by the same Dykstra and Mark Whiteley Design collaboration that produced the stunning 56m/186ft Royal Huisman ketch Aquarius just over a year ago. Her very experienced owner has sailed all his life and spent a lot of time at sea. “Sailing around the world in the weekends is a phrase often used to outline his days on board,” says Royal Huisman project manager Arjo Spans. He is also a repeat client – the original Sea Eagle is a 43m/143ft Frers/Rhoades Young design launched by the Dutch yard in 2015.
“Having worked with him to build the original Sea Eagle, we understood the owner’s priorities from the start,” says Spans. “These are: low maintenance, functionality, and safety, including ease of moving around the yacht, even when heeled at sea.
“For each of the key aspects of the boat he asked for three proposals, he would then choose one of them and leave us to implement it,” Spans adds. “He put a huge amount of trust in the shipyard and in our craftsmanship.”

The chokepoint at the Panama Canal could be approaching an end as weather forecasts indicate ample rain fall is heading for Panama, which if correct means many international shipping believe a return to normal crossing s possible in the near future. The persistent 11 month drought, made all the more worse by the El Niño weather phenomenon, saw a huge swathe of the global merchant fleet decide to avoid the waterway over the long queues and high toll fees. This was then compounded late last year when for the first time in shipping history, the Suez Canal became dangerous territory thanks to the Houthis from Yemen targeting merchant ships in and around the Red Sea in a campaign designed to bring pressure for a solution in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Three weeks ago the ACP, managers of the Canal, added three extra slots per day at its panamax locks, taking the total daily maximum transits to 27, still more than 10 shy of the waterway’s normal maximum, but a sign that the worst was over.

They can breathe a sign of relieve for now, but it's only a question of time before the canal becomes useless.
