Alleppey is steeped in religious traditions with numerous temples hosting annual festivals. One of the notable temples is the Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple, famous for its traditional Palpayasam (a sweet milk porridge), which is served as an offering to the deity. These festivals are not just religious observances but are also imbued with performances of music, dance, and sometimes elephant processions.

Ambalapuzha Palpayasam
Ambalapuzha Sree Krishna Temple in Alappuzha District in Kerala is one of the famous Krishna temple, which is well famous for the payasam prepared in the temple, known as the Ambalapuzha palpayasam, which is prepared using milk, sugar, and rice. There are two different  history about the  origin of Ambalapuzha Paal Payasam. One story is associated with the game of chess.
Story of Ambalapuzha Palpayasam and Chess
The king of Chembaserry was a great fan of chess and he was a brilliant player. He once challenged the people to defeat him in a chess play. A poor Brahmin, whom the people have never seen in the area before, took up the challenge.
The condition put forward by the brahmin was that, if the king was defeated by him then he should give rice to him.According to the condition, the king has to keep one rice grain on the first square and then, it must be doubled  in the remaining each 63 squares in the chess board.
The king actually did not think about the after effects, if he once fail in the game. He did not realize that, it was impossible for anyone to give that amount of rice.
The king accepted the condition placed by the Brahmin. The king was defeated in the play by the Brahmin, and had to give the rice to the Brahmin. The king managed to collect the entire rice in his kingdom, but still he elwas not able to give the rice, as per the condition.
Soon the Brahmin dropped his form and in his place, appeared Lord Sri Krishna. King asked Kriahna for his forgiveness. Lord Sri Krishna adviced the King  that he can settle the stake to him by preparing Palpayasam at Ambalapuzha temple daily.

History Of Ambalapuzha Palpayasam And The Wily Minister
The king once took some amount of rice from a Tamil Brahmin residing at Anambral as loan, for the military needs .Unfortunately the king was unable to settle the debt to the Brahmin in time. The principle and interest of the debt grew up and turned out to be 36,000 para.
After that, the King once came to the Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna temple to have Darshan. He was stopped by the Brahmin and he told that, the King should first settle his debt before entering the temple. The king, did not enter the temple, since he ruled as per Dharma.
A wily minister of the king soon got the rice needed to settle the debt. He stocked the bulk amount of rice in the courtyard of the Temple and  the Brahmin have to remove all those rice before the noon pooja, from the courtyard of Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna temple. The minister made sure that no labor should help the Brahmin for that. The Brahmin realized that he will not be able to remove that bulk amount of rice in the limited period of time by him alone. He finally donated that bulk amount of rice to the temple and he managed to prepare Paal Payasam  daily to Sri Krishna using the interest from the rice.
 Facts Of Ambalapuzha Palpayasam
It takes around 6 hours to complete the preparation of payasam. The cooking starts at 6 AM everyday.
First water is boiled in a big vessel (called varpu) for almost one hour. Milk is mixed into the boiling water. The milk is then slowly cooked till all the water disappears and the result will be pure milk. When the water has completely disappeared, rice is added and is cooked. When the rice is almost cooked, sugar is added to the payasam.
At present, palpayasam is prepared daily at Ambalapuzha Sri Krishna Temple  using 71 liter of milk, 284 liter water, 9 kilo rice and 15.84 liter sugar.

The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) recently has decided to secure a patent for Ambalapuzha Palpayasam, Kottarakara Unniyappam, and Sabarimala Aravana.
TDB president A Padmakumar said that the decision comes following the report showing illegal production and sale of counterfeit prasadams under the name of well-known Ambalapuzha Palpayasam. He explained that fake Ambalapuzha Palpayasam is being illegally produced and sold in several bakeries in the state, and obtaining the patent would prohibit unauthorized people from continuing to sell the products under the same or similar name.
He continued by saying that it is the first time when the temple prasadams will be getting Patent Protection to secure their uniqueness. The TDB has made this decision to obtain the patent rights under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 (GI Act), which is a sui generis Act of the Parliament of India for registration and better protection of geographical indications associated with products in India. As per the Geographical Indications Act, no one other than the authorized user can use the name of a registered product.
The recent move by TDB is to check and stop the sale of counterfeit versions of the iconic temple prasadams by hawkers as it is found that many catering agencies are not just preparing similar palpayasam but also naming it as Ambalapuzha Palpayasam. The board members have already started taking legal steps against the cheaters who are cheating people by using the name of their popular product. The law department has been asked to aid them with legal opinions to tackle the case, said Mr. A Padmakumar.
The president also told that earlier this month, TDB had begun with some legal measures against a bakery for allegedly making and selling milk porridge in sealed containers under the famous name – Ambalapuzha Palpayasam. Other than some specific bakeries, several catering houses and marriage caterers are also marketing fake palpayasam under the guise of Ambalapuzha Palpayasam for making profits, and the Travancore Devaswom Board is planning to take legal action against them. He cleared that the real prasadam is prepared at the temple and distributed to the devotees after offering it to the deity, but unfortunately, caterers and bakers at many other places are making the same or similar products, which then are sold with a claim to be real prasadams. At last, he ended the conversation by saying that it is for the first time in history when someone is taking steps to obtain a patent for the temple prasadams/ offerings.
