Bishop Beartongue is destabilising the economy of an entire continent.
And it's not the main plot.
It's just.

Look, this book just got downloaded into My Library yesterday and already I am giggling and kicking my feet while reading it. T Kingfisher's ability to make characters who I absolutely adore is unparalleled and phenomenal.
I'm so excited about sinking my teeth into this book and enjoying the: weird gross cool gory horrific fascinating hilarious and deeply deeply human moments.
you know those books that have a plot point so intriguing that you know the author spent months living in a rabbit hole of hyperfixation research, and by the end of the book you are now deeply versed in a corner of the world you had no idea about before? Kingfisher does this with a deft hand and deep passion for knowing.
seriously fantastic series.

Paladin's Faith
READ IT. IT'S FUN
I love all the characters, but Marguerite... I love that woman.
More characters: Oh, it's so good for all of them to be PEOPLE.
Worldbuilding, holy crap beautiful worldbuilding that pays attention to infrastructure and systems... (ticks a particular box of mind)
Sympathy for the Devil?
Oh, Judith...

My discretion? I’m a berserker. I hit things with swords until they fall down. That is not discreet.

so I DEVOURED the new book this morning and now I'm just wriggling around in my feelings
overarching plot: didn't really get answers to any of the questions I had, answered a bunch of questions I didn't know were open, and brought up a stack of new unanswered questions. deliciously tormenting.
the romance: impeccable. relate way too much to Shane's damage. delighted to see what happens when it's NOT heavily stupid4stupid (affectionate). don't get me wrong, there's still some classic "love makes you dumb" in there, but the overall balance of obstacles to the relationship is heavily weighted to the external. oh boy are there a few obstacles.
I'll be delighted to reread once my head stops spinning, and I eagerly await the audiobook edition!!!

Currently Listening: Paladin's Strength by T. Kingfisher, read by Joel Richards
This is such a a good series!! I love it, it makes me giggle and I love how the paladins of the Saint of Steel, while broken and dangerous, are still real and alive. And they feel like real people, think and talk and interact with other characters like real people. And of the two books so far, each paladin has found a person to love who is just as broken as they are, albeit in different ways. And they find ways to love and be with each other without hurting each other more.
If you love cozy swords and sorcery type books, I recommend The Saint of Steel series! Quite excellent!

"If you shut up and don't argue with me, we can get warm and incidentally have really incredible sex. Or you can keep wallowing in self-loathing and we can freeze to death. Your choice."
"Am I allowed to wallow in self-loathing afterward?"
T. Kingfisher really does write the very best paladins ❤️

"You’re a paladin.” Marguerite patted his arm. “Physical privation is practically one of your hobbies.”
Wren laughed. “We’re not that bad. I mean, it’s not like we enjoy bad food and dumping ice cold water over our heads at dawn. It just works out that way sometimes.”
“I enjoy hot baths,” said Shane. “And…err…food…”
Both women looked at him. Wren shook her head sorrowfully. “Poor bastard wouldn’t know a spice if it drew steel on him,” she murmured to Marguerite.
“It’s probably not his fault. Raised wrong, I expect.”
“I use pepper,” muttered Shane, stung. “And salt.”
He looked up into identical expressions of pity and decided to stare out the window instead.

Paladin's Faith by T. Kingfisher
Any book of T.Kingfisher is a perfect book to read when you need more joy, and I am very glad I spent the end of the year 2023 reading the latest one.
The continuation of the story of the dead Saint of Steel and his paladins and their love interests, friends and creepy happenings. This particular story concerns mostly Paladin Shane and his psychological problems and sexy spy Marguerite Florian. We also spend a lot of quality time with paladin Wren and her psychological problems. Since the Saint of Steel died, his chosen warriors, berserker paladins, are homicidal/suicidal and deeply damaged, which make for fun and heartwarming love stories. No, seriously. If you are not particularly interested in romance, this book still have a lot to offer – friendship, gnolls, demonic possessions, danger, excitement, the mystery of why exactly the Saint of Steel died, perilous rainfall in the mountains, sympathetic jerks, intrigues and inventions. I guess, I wasn’t particularly invested in the romance part in this particular book (I do like paladins in love, just previous ones I loved better), but I greatly enjoyed most of the non-romantic interactions between characters. Looking forward to the next book. I am very invested in Paladin Judith’s well-being and the mystery of the death of their Saint (it was the MURDER).

““Paladins?” Beartongue’s eyebrows shot up. “Why—forgive me, but if you were planning a covert spy mission, I don’t think our paladins would be my first choice.” She considered this. “Or my second choice. Possibly not even my third.”
