I ... I really like how Kaidan is this man in his 30s who is confident and kinda quiet but exudes this aura of sureness in his words and actions - and then you have a strong presence in Shepard who is a leader, confident in their role as Commander, but not always sure of themselves when it comes to their subordinates/friends once the mantle of Commander comes off.

"Are you flirting with me?" - this line from Shepard sounds more like they're asking for confirmation that not only does a crew mate like them, but is interested in them. Interested in them, outside of the Commander title, and them as a person. Kaidan reassures them - even when he gets turned down the night before Eden, he still comforts Shepard.

I like that over the course of the series it seems to flip, where Shepard becomes confident in themselves in their work and relationships/friendships (much more out of necessity) and Kaidan falls more and more into this uncertainty with his personal connections, and most importantly, with Shepard. Just like Shepard, he doesn't compromise his work or his morals but you can see that on the personal side he's second guessing everything everything he knew about Shepard.

The ME3 romance is Shepard taking care of Kaidan the same way he took care of them in the first game. It makes me gush how much Kaidan gets back to his confident self from ME1 if your Shepard decides to pursue him again and how you build up that trust once more. Kaidan is much more confident in his relationship with Shepard, much like how he did to the Commander during the romance in ME1, and he allows himself to trust and be honest again.

Him asking if the Commander is flirting with him in the hospital? That's a mirror of what Shepard was doing - feeling - in the first game. Does Shepard feel the same way? Are they still interested after seeing him lose control of his anger at Horizon? Was he wrong to assume they wanted to end what they had?

I love me the dynamic between Garrus and Shepard (bros for LIFE), but there's something so wonderful about Kaidan saying he wanted to be that comfortable space, that safe person, for Shepard that just tickles my romantic side especiallg seeing how it looks like they swap roles by the time ME3 rolls around.

not to be too blunt or anything, but if i could make out with this ask and the meta you just wrote, i would. mwah. master craft. i am genuinely so honored and flattered you shared this with me - thank you! i literally never even thought about it this way before, but holy shit you are so RIGHT. right down to the fact that kaidan now technically outranks shepard as major in me3; he is a lot more confident in his profession and position as a leader in his own right. hell, its his main priority (up until the moment he decides to take shepard at their word during the citadel confrontation...).

it’s clear that romanced or not, shepard’s death hit kaidan and it hit kaidan HARD. no doubt that he recoiled back into his shell after that, and especially after shepard joins cerberus and causes a whole slew of misunderstandings, confusion, and people being kept out of the loop. it’s really, really sweet to see him bounce back after that.

even with a shenko that starts in me3 (with mshenko primarily, but also fshenko where the romance path is cancelled before it can even begin)… while kaidan never takes his shot in me1, and its directly stated that kaidan wants to avoid acting out of line with such a serious and professionally focused shepard (in his words, shepard was “always so focused on the work back then. the mission was everything,” to which shepard replies, “it’s true. i’ll never know what i missed.”). however, over the course of the plot he still manages to get shepard to warm up around him, becoming good friends w them and dealing with ashley’s death together.

so really, we’re back to our original parallel. kaidan was the one more assured in personal relationships while- wait. hold on. kaidan’s initial struggle in dropping formalities in this route could also be attributed to his uncertainty when it comes to working with shepard. this would be filed into kaidan being more uncertain when it comes to his work and interacting with his more ‘accomplished’ and emotionally constipated/serious commanding officer. SORRY. sorry. as i was saying, kaidan was the one more assured in personal relationships, while shepard was the opposite. and gah. GAH. taste. by design.

also, to add to your original take, his certainty in his actions are called into question in me3 too. he doubts his behavior towards shepard, he tries to sit down and think through the good people who were caught up in cerberus, he questions how the illusive man spiraled into the person he is and if he was ever a good person. its just good. sorry my thoughts are so jumbled and im just word vomiting as i write this reply. truly a failing grade paper on my part, i hope you dont mind!!

as for garrus, agreed! garrus feels like a really touching sort of “mentorship” ride or die comrades dynamic that builds over the course of the plot while kaidan definitely has the above mentioned parallels and has the “equals who can help bring out the best in each other’s weaknesses” thing.

Sunday Snippet

So, I woke up this morning to an idea I've had percolating for the past six years. The muses finally had me drabbling a bit of early stuff just for kicks. Not sure when I'll get back to it, but enjoy. :)

Decontamination procedures delay the reunion momentarily, but as soon as he steps inside, he’s greeted by the warmth of an old, familiar voice.  “Shepard! Good to see you.”   Cullen takes the hand offered and shakes it as they start walking deeper into the frigate.  He is mesmerized by what he finds there.  His orders had mentioned a “prototype” warship, but until this moment, he hadn’t realized just how experimental it was.  And while it has some of the basic layout of an Alliance ship, he can definitely identify other influences. “Hehehe.  Like it?” Though still in dock, the CIC hums with activity. But it's the design of it that leaves Cullen staring, half in disbelief and the other half in delight. “It’s so…different.“ Anderson claps him on the shoulder.  “You’ll get used to it.  Come on.  I’ll show you to your quarters and then introduce you to your head of marine detail.” It's a fight to pull his attention back to Anderson. “Are they responsible for the squad on duty outside?” “Liked what you saw?”  Anderson’s smile becomes a full fledged grin.  “Yeah, he's responsible for them, and I think you two are going to get along just fine.”

Yeah, maybe he is. So much is happening, though, since that mission on Eden Prime. Every time they have a new clue about what he’s doing, it seems more COMPLICATED than they first thought. What will happen next ? Kaidan is trying to not overthink, but the task is not easy at all. It’s his first time in such an important mission. He’s glad Shepard is there, though. She’s probably the best possible Commander.

“Yeah, I’m sorry.” He replies, letting a soft, NERVOUS chuckle escape his mouth. “I guess I’m just thinking way too much. I’ll stay concentrated, though. Don’t worry.”

i have an unhealthy adoration for the idea of shepard being the first to go head over heels in mshenko. and that's not to say kaidan doesn't develop feelings before me3, i just think he's the kind to fall in love slowly.

it's especially funny because (without mods) shepard can only romance women in the first two games, and i headcanon shepard as gay. so there's this extremely idolized and well-known military commander who could pull pretty much anybody he wants. absolutely BITCHLESS for the first few years because he's so horrendously down bad.

liara? ashley? miranda? jack? kelly? diana? nope. n o p e. he only wants kaidan, regulations be damned. it's one of the things that makes the very AGONIZING canonical slow burn very, very worth it.

like if you're playing the way i do, with a shepard that hasn't gotten with anyone at all in the trilogy, it makes the mars scene so much more impactful. and the way he doesn't want to leave kaidan's side—he's only just gotten him back. it makes the initial silence as liara tells him kaidan needs medical attention that much more intense. it makes his "where are you taking him?" on the citadel that much more emotional.

Vivienne: *slowly blinks awake and smiles feeling his husbands both embracing him amongst the blankets and pillows, the bliss of waking up to his first day of married life almost enough to blot out the memory of what happened the previous evening, but not quite* … *glances at the door considering getting up to finally go investigate outside* … *glances back at taliesins sleeping face and smiles giving him a kiss, before looking up at Kaidan and nearly pissing himself in fright* KAI!

Kaidan: *wide awake just smirking playfully at him* caught you thinking of sneaking off into trouble didn’t I~

Taliesin: *jolts awake and immediately groans and pouts as he cuddles vivienne tight while feeling around for Kaidan to pull him into the snuggle puddle* hnnnng noooo, it’s too earlyyyyy. And I’m sore…

Kaidan: *lays his arm over both of them pulling them in tight, squishing vivienne between them* I know love, you danced quite a bit last night, and handled those reavers too…

Vivienne: those rea-

Kaidan: *leans down silencing him with a kiss, pulling away slowly with a soft whisper* shhhh… we’ll talk about it when nerevar and voryn get here… for now let me just hold you both and pretend the rest of the world doesn’t exist… just for a little while.

Vivienne: *stares up at him, then back at Taliesin to see the high elfs tired green eyes peering at him from behind his pillow* …mm. *closes his eyes and stretches with a long drawn out yawn before melting into their embrace* okay.

Taliesin: *smiles and nuzzles into his neck*

Kaidan: *closes his eyes and hums contently as he brings them both in closer* thank you.

*a few hours later*

Vivienne: *now dressed and quietly inspecting outside the house before the rest of the settlement wakes, only to find it stripped of all evidence from the night before, no blood, no bones, no bodies, not even a track mark left by the lurkers, except for an odd shape beneath the ash* …hm?… *crouches down and dusts it away revealing a blade* oh?… *dusts more away and pulls up a rather unusual, jagged dagger from the earth* what the?…

???: Lost something?

Vivienne: *looks up to see voryn & nerevar approaching* You know I haven’t… what happened last night? Who were those people really? Why are they after me?…

Voryn: *furrows his brow and removes his chitin helm with a deep sigh, heart hurting at how vivienne immediately knows, not assumes, knows, he’s the one they’re after* let’s go inside. We’ll discuss it in there.

Nerevar: *helps vivienne back to his feet and blinks seeing the dagger* Ethos?

Vivienne: what? Oh is- this yours? I found it in the ash-

Nerevar: I… it was mine, vivec gave it to me before the battle of red mountain, I found it once more during my time as the nerevarine but… it disappeared one day, along with Vivec’s sword and the mask.

Vivienne: vivec had a sword? I?… if it disappeared then those people had it yeah? They brought it here then to use it against me?

Nerevar: if they had intent to use it for violence then they’re no worshippers of vivec. *ushers him inside with voryn* it’s a tool of obligation, for bartering or negotiation.

Vivienne: I… they intended to negotiate with me? *walks into the kitchen and sets it down on the table as Kaidan and Taliesin begin setting out breakfast*

Taliesin: Weapons off the ta-… what is that?

Kaidan: Weird looking knife is what it is. Morning you pair, many green faces around town today?

Voryn: *chuckles as he sits down* oh yes~ we spotted a few outside the netch who’d celebrated a little too hard.

Nerevar: *sits beside him* they were certainly putting the retching to the netch-

*barfing from down the hall*

Vivienne: it sounds like Sero is doing the same. *smiles giving kai and Taliesin a kiss each before sitting with them and looking at the blade* can I please be filled in on the people after me now? Before we take mannimarco to the temple to be cleansed?… please?…

Nerevar: *looks at voryn & nods*

Voryn: *sighs and places the artefacts brought to him by his men on the table, along with the tong assassins reports* Cultists of the tribunal had more of a foothold on the island than we’d anticipated… a temple dedicated to them was located a ways from the settlement and its occupants were dealt with. But unfortunately not all of said occupants were present, said unaccounted for cultists, turned up here last night, dressed as reavers minus their leader, who was dressed as in decommissioned royal guard armour.

Vivienne: *eyes wide staring at the mask of Almalexia and the hopesfire blade, both now stripped of their magic but undeniably artefacts of the tribunal* wh-what?… *shakily picks the mask up and drops it as images of the foul murder return to his mind and his body seizes up* I-

Nerevar: Vihn!

Kaidan: Love?!

Taliesin: Darling?!

Voryn: *reaches across the table taking his hand in a firm grasp* Breathe vivienne…

Vivienne: *draws in a sharp breath before opening his eyes and steadying himself* I’m- im fine… I’m, im fine… *shakily pulls back from voryns hand and grips onto Kaidan and Taliesin* I’m… im safe… I’m safe… *closes his eyes tight for a moment before opening them with a slow exhale* I’m okay. *looks down at the mask as nerevar pulls it away from him* I thought… I thought you said it was destroyed?… along with sotha sils?

Nerevar: they’re supposed to be. I shattered them with my own hands. *casts a simple mage light and holds it behind it showing cracks all through the fanged face of his former wife* it seems they put it back together though…

Vivienne: I’m worried what else they may have put back together… if they had such an established base here on such a small island… there could be more in morrowind… or as far as skyrim… there’s most likely branches in the empire as well…

Taliesin: darling I’m sure it’s not that bad-

Kaidan: No love, he’s right to be cautious. After the fall of the tribunal there’s no telling how far their followers spread. Especially since worship of them would lead the persecution.

Taliesin: … *sighs* I suppose you’re right, I should know given the wide spread hidden talos worship I was assigned to track down- darling?

Vivienne: *stands slowly and rubs his face* I’m going to go help Miraak prepare mannimarco… after he’s cleansed of what Bal did to him, I’m going to see the temple for myself-

Everyone: NO!

Vivienne: I wasn’t asking. *turns and walks out, his tone short and his tolerance for being kept in the dark any longer even shorter*

*a few hours later*

Vivienne: is he alright?…

Miraak: *emerges from the temple holding mannimarco amongst a number of blankets, the high elf unconscious, but the markings left by Molag Bal now gone from his skin at last, and a strange serene look of peace across his sleeping face, contrasting the cold sweat left from the ritual* he survived. Whether or not he’s alright, we won’t know until he wakes.

Vivienne: *gently fixes the blanket over the high elf a little more* take him back to the manor and keep an eye on him…

Miraak: you’re serious about investigating this hidden temple then? On your own?

Vivienne: I am… and you know as well as I, I won’t be alone. *looks back to see the rest of the group gathered nearby, prepared, and waiting to follow him* Whether they like it or not. I’m tired of running away, and fed up with hiding… and I’ll be damned if I let a group of cultists ruin my honeymoon any further.
