Happy Thanksgiving, my friends! Think of this post as a bountiful Thanksgiving table, a cornucopia of treats on which to feast, and we’re not just talking turkey! The first spot is the old Zorn’s building in Bethpage, New York. Zorn’s has provided the centerpiece of many a Long Island Thanksgiving table since 1940. My photo was taken in 2017, and this building was since razed for a car dealership. Zorn’s moved next door and took the neon sign with it, thankfully. Next up is a bar in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, called the Turkey’s Nest Tavern. I took this curious photo – notice the sign the woman is holding – while running the New York City Marathon in 2019. I smiled, but not because I was guilty of said offense! Our third stop is the shuttered Wishbone Fried Chicken in Tifton, Georgia. Lots of folks today will be snapping wishbones and hoping to get the bigger part – may your wish come true, regardless! Next up is the Pilgrim’s Pride Motel in Wildwood, New Jersey. There are two bushes flanking the sign, so photographing it was a challenge, one I was glad to accept. I love this time-traveling pilgrim. He’s dressed for the 1670s, but there’s something about him that’s more 1970s. Now, one of the first things I do on Thanksgiving Day is play “Alice’s Restaurant” by Arlo Guthrie. The 1967 song is forever tied with Thanksgiving Day. The Cliff Notes? Two years earlier, Guthrie was arrested for illegally dumping garbage from a dinner he’d shared with his pal, Alice Brock, at this church outside Stockbridge, Massachusetts, where she lived. He wrote a song about it, and the rest is history. Today it’s the Guthrie Center, complete with a nod to the red VW Microbus in the lyrics, parked right outside. Finally, and soon enough, it will be time to eat! I present five signs with clear instructions to do just that: Clifton, New Jersey’s Tick Tock Diner advises eating heavy: Al’s Hamburgers in Green Bay, Wisconsin, gets right to the point; a shuttered restaurant in Cabazon, California, no longer delivers what it promises; Bill Johnson’s had the right idea for the holiday in Mesa, Arizona; and finally, an “Ideal” way to end this post, in Minneapolis. #retrologist (at United States of America) https://www.instagram.com/p/ClWghUDLmH7/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

There’s still so much I want to buy and will buy (tbh) but I keep going to record sales and not remembering what I own and almost buying doubles of the same album, so that’s why this list exists. But I also saw folks publishing their lists earlier and I love seeing what people have in their collections (truly I’d love to see yours if you wanted to post it!) July 10th is National Pina Colada Day
Tumblr media
Here Are Today’s Five Thing To Know About Pina Coladas:
The piña colada, a drink created in Puerto Rico (Spanish: piña, pineapple + colada, strained) is a sweet, rum-based cocktail made with rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice, usually served either blended or shaken with ice.
The piña colada was created on August 16, 1954 at the Caribe Hilton’s Beachcomber Bar in San Juan, Puerto Rico by its alleged creator, Ramón “Monchito” Marrero.
Apparently, the hotel management had expressly requested Monchito to mix a new signature drink that would delight the demanding palates of its star-studded clientele.
Monchito accepted the challenge, and after three intense months of blending, shaking and experimenting, the first piña colada was born.
This story is more credible because the piña colada contains coconut cream as one of the primary ingredients, and the coconut cream of “Coco López” (which is the pioneer) was invented in 1954 in the University of Puerto Rico by Ramón López Irizarry.
Follow To Explore The Foodie In You
Today’s Food History:
1720 Mrs. Clements invented a method of preparing mustard flour or powder, which was known for a long time as Durham Mustard. Until then, mustard was made into balls with honey and or vinegar, and then mixed with more vinegar when needed. (Some sources give the date as June 10).
1839 or 1842 Adolphus Busch was born in either 1839 or 1842 near Mainz, Germany. He founded Annheuser Busch in 1866 with his father-in-law, Eberhard Anheuser. Annheuser Busch is the world’s largest brewer.
1866 The indelible pencil was patented by Edson P. Clark of Northhampton, Massachusetts. This was the equivalent of the ball point pen of the time. It was non-erasable, and you didn’t need an ink well. Used for bills, prices, etc., you could also place a damp sheet of tissue paper over the writing to get a mirror image. It must have been time consuming to get a receipt from a restaurant.
1871 Marcel Proust was born. Marcel Proust was a French writer. On January 1, 1909, he ate a piece of tea-soaked toast whose taste caused on a series of childhood memories. In his 7 volume allegorical novel ‘Remembrance of Things Past,’ the character Swann has a similar experience when he bites into a lemon cookie (a madelaine) which evokes a similar torrent of memories. This is one of the most ubiquitous (i.e., widely-quoted) allusions in literature.
1892 The first concrete paved street is built in Bellefountaine, Ohio. This makes food shopping much easier. They paved Paradise and put up a parking lot for the supermarket. We have lots of paved parking lots (no more oyster shell parking lots), but paved sidewalks are still not very common here in Key West, nor are Street name signs at corners. For a small island, we are not very pedestrian friendly.
1913 The highest temperature every recorded in the U.S., 134 F. in Death Valley, California.
1920 Edward H. Lowe born. He invented Kitty Litter in 1947.
1941 Musician ‘Jelly Roll’ Morton died.
1947 Arlo Guthrie was born. Woody Guthrie’s son, he is most known for his ballad/story ‘Alice’s Restaurant.’
1958 The first parking meters are installed in England.
1985 Coca-Cola announced it was bringing back the old formula ‘Coke’ as Coca-Cola Classic, but would continue to sell the ‘New Coke.’
1989 Mel Blanc (Melvin Jerome Blanc) died. Blanc was a voice actor for Warner Bros. (and other) cartoon characters. Some of the characters he ‘voiced’ include Bugs Bunny, Tweety Bird, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and Sylvester the Cat.
1999 Aaron ‘Bunny’ Lapin died. Lapin was the inventor of whipped cream in an aerosol can (‘Reddi-Wip’) in 1948.

Another day, another new post-punk band
We are in a post-punk renaissance right now.
Seriously, it seems like every day, there's a new post-punk band that comes out with a high quality album that's worth listening to. I mean, just peep at the lineage over the years - from the early 2010's "Big 3" of Preoccupations, Protomartyr, and Parquet Courts (P bands squad up..) to the explosion birthed by the likes of IDLES and Shame and Fontaines DC. At that point, the floodgates were open. black midi came out of nowhere and kicked all of our asses. Black Country, New Road shot to the top of everyone's attention. Dry Cleaning wowed us with talking vocals over very groovy, tangled up guitars. Geese wowed us with their theatrics and sheer creativity. Wet Leg and The Last Dinner Party questioned just how pop-oriented post-punk could be.
And now, we have arrived friends, with another phenomenal band.
They are called English Teacher, and they have a stellar debut out called This Could Be Texas.
With a black frontwoman, they look different than your typical, fully white male post-punk group. Shout out to Special Interest, who blazed that trail before English Teacher.
English Teacher sound like Arlo Parks fronting Black Country, New Road and they have a slew of highly intelligent, highly sardonic, highly catchy and highly cathartic songs. My two favorites at the moment are "The World's Biggest Paving Slab" and "I'm Not Crying, You're Crying" - a song so good that I abruptly stopped listening to the album just so I could have a moment to process the greatness that I just heard.
Elsewhere, songs like "Not Everybody Gets to Go To Space" addresses class inequality in a very poignant way, and R&B directly addresses the singer holding space as a black girl in a white dominant scene.
It's only up for this band, they have the opportunity to be huge when everyone stops sleeping on them. I'm excited.
