What I really don't understand is people hating on Chris Chibnall specifically due to certain episodes that *he didn't even write.* Like yes, he's the showrunner, he has power and is part of the decision making and choices, but a lot of these comments that I see against certain episodes, mainly Orphan 55 and Kerblam!, paint him as the writer, the villain who ruined the doctor by writing this story and these politics. He wrote this story. He did this.
But like, them - those two most hated stories (from what I've seen on Tumblr), especially Kerblam! from a political perspective - he wasn't the writer. A quick google search will tell you that
Kerblam? Pete McTighge
Orphan 55? Ed Hime
Before anyone comes for me, I'm not claiming that Chibnall is perfect by any means or absolving him of any responsibility to do with these episodes. I know Tumblr's media literacy can be... eh. I don't particularly like these specific episodes, although I do like 13's run overall, not my favourite, don't like everything in it, but who does for any monolith in dw. DW really is a mixed bag. I honestly really enjoy watching some of the episodes, they're such a vibe. 13 is in my top 4 doctors! (7, 11, 12 and 13 in no particular order)
Every series has some shitty episodes. Some are written by the showrunner, some aren't. But it's kinda weird to paint the showrunner as some kind of villain for these episodes especially.
So yeah! make valid criticisms, but also remember to like check who actually wrote it before flaming.

oh god but the parallels… the doctor returning to gallifrey to find it ravaged by nuclear warfare, then going on their very next adventure to visit orphan 55 (for a holiday! a break from the pain!) and discovering that future-earth, their home away from home, could be doomed to suffer a similar fate… the flashback of war, disorder and destruction as she reads the dreg’s memories… salt in the wound

The issue with the Doctor's speech at the end of Orphan 55 isn't that it is on the nose and condescending, the issue is that Donna Noble isn't there to say: "Is that why you travel round with a human at your side? It's not so you can show them the wonders of the universe, it's so you can take cheap shots?"

I was thinking about the popular fan theory that 16 year old fanboy Chris Chibnall's embarrassing appearance complaining about Terror of the Vervoids on live television was possibly the inspiration for the character Whizz Kid in The Greatest Show in the Galaxy.

If that's the case, then does that mean Benni and Vilma from Orphan 55 were based on Pip and Jane Baker?

Listen. There are definitely some issues with how Orphan 55 handled its topics but you cannot tell me that the moment where Ryan is hallucinating the bats/Tosin Cole's background acting/the Doctor's blase explanation isn't one of the funniest fucking moments in all of Doctor Who (literally only tied for me on a personal level with the scene in The Pandorica Opens where it takes the Doctor like a good minute in a half to figure out "the obvious thing I'm missing"- aka when Rory the Roman is staring him dead in the face). Like, I've got my complaints about Chibnall and Moffatt's writing but those scenes do not get old no matter how many times I've watched them. I laugh every single time and I'll never stop. Props where they're due, to writers and actors alike- Tosin Cole, Jodie Whittaker, Matt Smith, and Arthur Darvill's comedic timing/acting in these scenes is AMAZING.

Okay! So after rewarching Orphan 55 I can conclude that it's a great episode! Really fun at times, really dark at others. It's got some great dialogue and some interesting relationships
I've seen people say its too preachy but honestly it felt more hopeful than preachy, its very clear the doctors final dialogue is supposed to emphasise that this scenario isn't inevitable and its not too late for us to save the earth. Which I love because climate pessimism helps nobody
"Humans... I think you forget how powerful you are" is a very doctory quote and I love it

Okay, the thing I love about the Chibnall series, is that the episodes are so emotionally driven. Less fighting aliens, and more engaging with their environment. It's less about being clever and more about telling a compelling story.
My one complaint is that the themes lack subtlety. For example, Orphan 55 didn't have to be Earth for the audience to get the point.

Orphan 55
Ok, so people have ranted about this episode and I think most of those rants make very good points. But! The thing that has driven me nuts is that planet BELONGS to the Dregs. The Dregs were the indigenous species (they’re a mutated/evolved version of human beings)! AND the Dregs have adapted to the climate of Orphan 55. They are perfectly suited to the carbon filled atmosphere and some rich mother fuckers come to colonize their planet, establish a luxury resort on their land, and plan to terraform the planet!! These rich mother fuckers are COLONIZERS that stole land and tried to change the climate so that it was inhospitable to the native inhabitants (who, I would like to remind you, are HUMAN even if they are mutated). Why are we on the side of the colonizers? Because they look more human?
The doctor sided with the colonizers and that is the greatest failing of Orphan 55.

this episode is bad in a campy way not bad in a boring way at least. one of the funniest aliens i’ve seen in dw. she looks like she came straight out of an amateur production of cats the musical
also, thirteen is acting *properly* doctor now, i finally buy her embodying the character. i.e:
Tumblr media
blatant lies and emotional repression, etc

trademark bragadoccio rudeness
