Roddacember 2023 Day 5 | Your favourite magic
No but seriously the magic system in and around Rondo is so cool and intricate and well developed because of all the rules but then how there's also ways to get around them, and the world is so realised within this magic system and- wait where are you going?

You know, I can't help but feel as if the games already had a compelling character arc for Richter that the show just blindly ignored in favor of making him more like Trevor, which defeats the point of making changes for the sake of creativity.
You have this hotshot hero, best of the best, at his total prime and everybody loves him, but there's a darker side to him, an existential insecurity about the implications of his role, and what happens if he's fulfilled it; Where does he go next? What else is he good for? Is Richter a soldier who's come back from the battlefield and is suddenly expected to just go back to living a normal life?
And that creates the setup for his fall from grace when Shaft exploits those emotions, which could lead to a compelling humbling arc where Richter ultimately comes around and triumphs over his demons and arrogance to do the right thing. There are still consequences, like the Vampire Killer rejecting him, but that sets up Bloodlines and Portrait of Ruin, and eventually, things heal when Julius steps up for the War of 1999.
It's just such a very distinct and fascinating way to deconstruct the legendary hero, so you'd think Netflixvania would be all over that with its darker tone, but it just makes something up. So I don't really buy the excuse of "There's not enough to work with," at least in THIS aspect of adapting the Richter era.
im really hoping that by 'making him more like trevor' you mean making him more like netflix trevor, but i wouldnt actually know much about that since i cant stomach even 5 minutes of the first nfcv ^^'
richters character arc is indeed incredibly interesting, being one of the most well-defined and intentional arcs of any castlevania character, considering his multitude of little accidental parallels with trevor or not -- in fact, i feel like if you wanted to adapt ANY castlevania plotline into something faithfully, richters story across rondo and sotn would be the best, because of how much youre already given and how clear-cut it is in comparison to someone like, well, trevor, who is most likely so strange in curse of darkness because he needed to act as a bit of a plot device and the writers didnt think too much about whether or not his actions might conflict with characterisation given and informed by an nes game -- this goes for arikado, too, as for why hes so very Like That in aria of sorrow.
... but this isnt about them, oops. youre right that its something that would, assumedly, work well for a tv show format, especially under the guise of adapting and building off of the original material in ways that wouldnt work with a game series of castlevania's genre. however, they obviously didnt want to do that, for whatever reason, which would likely be because netflix castlevania just doesnt much care for making something truly and genuinely based off of castlevania. theyre just not interested in it, for whatever reason, which would be fine if it wasnt the thing they were supposed to adapt 😭

Chopin Comp Final Stage - Oct 20
Click to go to master post for explanation and link to all parts
Performances
Aimi Kobayashi - really pretty dress! She keeps touching her necklace, wonder if it's a sentimental thing. moderate tempo on the intro, crisp arpeggios, very intentional note placement. Nice start. It's very intentional but maybe loses some flow. Maybe needs some more power? Middle section has a good amount of power. A few missed notes though. Sighhhh it's not bad, it's just not holding its own against the orchestra. Very slow second movement. but I like it. But the piano is still not singing out. Third movement is better, piano is shining more. Some really interesting decisions on tempo and what parts to draw out. It... sort of reminds me of Pogorelich's scherzos, and I rarely compare pianists to other pianists. It's just really interesting and a bit abstract. i don't think it works that well in a concerto though. I feel like she was doing lots of interesting things that were lost in the orchestra. (Could this possibly be the result of mic or sound troubles?)
Jakub Kuszlik - Nice sound at the start. Faster, more upbeat tempo. I guess I like the faster tempo, it seems to flow better. That french horn line was so nice lol! This is a nice first section, basically clean (some oopses but in less noticeable spots), flows nicely, rises nicely into the ascending runs. Pretty nice middle section. Got away a little bit in one part but he pulled it back. Nice coda! Largely clean, shining sound. This is a nice start to the second movement. Nice flowing phrases, nice singing tone. This is turning out to be a very standard, but very nice concerto! Ooof super big and noticeable and awkward oops in the third movement. Generally very crisp runs throughout. A few more mistakes creeping in toward the end.
Hyuk Lee - omg. What is this tone? This is the tone that Aimi had in her mazurkas. Very honest and direct-sounding. It's lovely so far. A bit loud? Maybe I just like loud stuff? There's something about this piano. I think it's that the sound loses volume very quickly, so it comes out a bit plinkier-sounding, with little accents on all the notes. I really like it! Some people in chat are calling it awful though lol. I'm liking it so far, nice momentum, tone, and power. This second movement is lovely! Third movement is starting nice. He seems to be making a lot of small note mistakes throughout though. It's not the cleanest in runs. I think the notes aren't exactly even and it's sounding a bit muddy as a result. Overall nice third movement, nice concerto. This was a solid performance!
Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu - Bit of a weird intro from the orchestra. Sounds like it was fast and the orchestra wasn't ready for it. Awkward oops on his start. Yeah he's going really fast. It's too fast, but more than that, it's too abrupt. Abrupt rubatos followed by abrupt returns to speed. It keeps catching me by surprise. Nice middle section, he had a rough start into it, but he settled it down and it was clean after that. In fact, this whole recap is nice. He's settled in and let the phrasing direct the rubato, it's less jerky now. Coda basically clean. Sounds like a weird LH chord in there though. first phrase of largo seemed a bit timid. Tone got better after that. He's doing some interesting things with texture in this movement. Lines without pedal. It's not as lyrical, but it's interesting. Some really fast and bright runs for the second movement. Very bouncy third movement. Super bouncy. A bit weird actually. This third movement seems to be a good match for his style. It's turning out nice! Very bouncy, crisp, and clean. Great finale to the competition!
My recs
Jakub Kuszlik - This was a standard interpretation, but very nicely executed concerto 1, exciting and pleasant.
Hyuk Lee - Lovely clear and earnest tone throughout.
Bruce (Xiaoyu) Liu (Rondo Vivace) - A thrilling third movement! I wasn't in love with his first or second, but this was a better match for his style. Lightning-fast, virtuosic runs, super clear and sharp!

TAGGED BY: you know ;) TAGGING: only gay ppl can see this
GETTING  TO  KNOW  THE  MUN.
NAME:  chibi NICKNAME:  reddo, cheeb, richter belmont titfuck ( thanks gc ) FACECLAIM:  usually lucina but i tend to just use whoever’s blog i’m on. just picture me as a pikachu or kirby and ur basically good to go PRONOUNS:   they / them, him / he ( tentatively ). please do not call me she / her. HEIGHT:   like 5′1″ or 5′2″ i cant remember i’m tiny BIRTHDAY:   march 27th AESTHETIC:    spooky & goth stuff ( vampires, witches, etc ). black, white, pink & blue. and pikachu. LAST  SONG  YOU  LISTENED  TO:   nocturne - symphony of the night ost FAVORITE  MUSE (S)  YOU’VE  WRITTEN:  richter right here for one, but lucina ( @eyebrand ), zero ( @latrocinari ) jacob frye ( @rooksassassin ), monika ( @dotchr ) are ones that really stick out too! i’m still working on miriam ( @shardbind ) but i love her in general so she’ll be a favorite in no time /o/
GETTING  TO  KNOW  THE  ACCOUNT.
WHAT  INSPIRED  YOU  TO  TAKE  ON  THIS  MUSE:  i was just getting into castlevania because i love spooky things like monsters and vampires and complicated themes of religion because it’s #relatable to me as a gay trans person, so i was bingeing through the show and was going to get to the games next. then simon & richter were announced for smash and i thought richter was cute so i binged through rondo and sotn and oops i saw the potential there for his character so i decided to pick his muse up!! i tend to go for sad muses that slowly heal as time goes on i guess. a lot of richter is mostly speculation / hc’d based bc castlevania is not heavy on character lore at all ( at least before lords of shadow anyway ) so a lot of his character comes from what’s seen in canon & expanded on / thought on, which is a good writing exercise on its own!!
WHAT  ARE  YOUR  FAVORITE  ASPECTS  OF  YOUR  CURRENT  MUSE: i think there’s something interesting - and unsettling - about the belmont and dracula dynamic, in which that belmonts are pretty much cycled through every century and just basically forgotten about, and it’s really only brought up in sotn with richter. granted, richter was brainwashed at the time so you can argue that who knows what’s actually richter’s feelings, but i like to think that deep down inside there is that fear of being forgotten about inside of him. richter had completed his entire life journey at 19 years old, and that’s barely out of adolescence years.
combined with losing his fiance ( with dxc anyway but i feel like annette had left richter in the continuities where she lives because she became disenchanted with the vampire hunter lifestyle ), i imagine richter’s mental health really wasn’t so great after that. of course, richter wants to appear strong to people and he probably through that they would think of him as weak and unlike his great, legendary ancestors - even if there is a rational part of him saying that they’re human too, he feels like he needs to be like them as a hero and warrior. and those thoughts and such were used against him. all because all of that was drilled in his head, in some form of another. maybe not by his family directly, but the impact they left and the cycle they’re in.
tl;dr leon belmont wanted to fight the night but all he got were grandkids with anxiety
WHAT’S  YOUR  BIGGEST  INSPIRATION  WHEN  IT  COMES  TO  WRITING: having plots & threads that go along with richter’s character really well usually makes me write faster!! music sometimes helps too, though i can’t listen to music while i write bc i’ll overstim myself that way.
FAVORITE  TYPES  OF  THREADS:  deep, meaningful threads. humor’s good too and crack threads are pretty funny too when i’m feeling them. i’m also a sucker for romance HAHAHA
BIGGEST  STRUGGLE  IN  REGARDS  TO  YOUR  CURRENT  MUSE: mostly keeping up with threads and finding longterm partners, especially in a mfrp like isola. castlevania is still kind of a niche thing so finding partners who are even interested in threading with a mostly obscure character can be kind of a downer at times as well ( i always feel like i’m screaming into the void about castlevania stuff LMAO ), so that’s really the only struggle i can think of, aside from rping a character that’s largely hc based! it’s rough out here for the non-netflixvania bitches like me :pensive:
speaking of that as well, i’m also cautiously awaiting for the rondo / sotn adaption that throws out all of my headcanons or whatever character that richter had in the games and i’ll have to put on my app that i’m not accepting canon doubles. considering the nightmare that was the fefates localization w/ zero’s character, i am just awaiting another instance like that in some form or another.

Witch Hecate, Shutendoji, Tengu, Rondo of Snowy Night, Night's Queen, Princess Dawn, Brocade Jade, Fire Tiger of Tail, Soul Seer
Send me a set (or as many sets as you want) from Love Nikki and I’ll rate it!
Witch Hecate: I straight up SCREAMED when I saw this suit in the gallery after a game update. I love it, I’m all about any ‘spooky’ sort of set. The little ghost ‘coat’ is amazing, the dress and hair are gorgeous, the makeup is A++ and I love the accessories. If I had one complaint it’s that Midnight Fright is positioned in a way that makes it really hard to try get a hold of to move around in free dressing. 9/10
Shutendoji: I’m not the biggest fan of most of this set, if I’m honest. The pose is really awkward and just looks so weird with anything other than the intended hair and makeup. That said, I love the makeup, horns and foreground/background items (Still mad that Ghost Fire - the part I REALLY WANTED - is the one part I never got). It’s just one of those sets where I love individual pieces but not the thing as a whole. 4/10
Tengu: HONESTLY THE BEST OF THE YOKAI SUITS imo. At least it’s my favourite one. The wings are unsurprisingly my favourite part b/c I’m a sucker for ears/wings/tails/horns/antlers ect. The main part of the suit can be a little tricky to style with accessories outside of the the rest of the set but it’s not impossible, it just makes it a little limited unless you’re really creative. Also I LOVE the makeup so much, it’s the perfect mix of mischief/malice. 10/10
Rondo of Snowy Night: Okay but I have wanted this suit since I saw official art of it awhile back from the other servers of the game and I nearly cried when it was one of our Christmas suits. It’s so beautiful and serene. Just looking at it makes me feel calm, like I’m curled up in a window seat with a book watching the snow fall at night. I also want ALL the animal companions so the giant reindeer is an absolute delight 12/10.
Night’s Queen: Absolutely one of the best suits in the game and I will fight people on this. It’s breathtaking. I don’t have the words for how stunning it is to be honest. The artist who created it did such a fantastic job. The lightning effect on the special pose is a wonderful touch, and dark, sparkling, night sky-themed things are my ultimate aesthetic so this suit embodies everything I love. ESPECIALLY given it’s a non-human suit too like UGH. 100/10, breaks the scale.
Princess Dawn: It is a pretty suit, that I cannot deny. But it’s another one of those where I like parts individually just not the thing as a whole. I’m not the biggest fan of the makeup, it looks too much like Moment Like a Dream but like, the store-own brand as opposed to big brand name. I’m so sorry if anyone likes it it just looks really awkward to me, I know it’s supposed to be, well, a face of just waking up but it looks like she needs to sneeze to me lmao. I’m not the biggest fan of the dress either. Everything else I love though! I adore the anklets, foreground and wings especially. The necklace and hair are pretty too. 7/10
Brocade Jade: KITSUNE. That pretty much sums up my feelings omg. I’m still ‘!!!!!!!!’ over this suit. I LOVE the special pose and whilst it’s tricky to style with like most full-body alt poses, it’s one of my favourites to attempt to create something unique with. Fantasy Fox is undoubtedly the best part of the suit though like lbr, that’s the main attraction here: Giant. Fluffy. Kitsune. But every other part of it is beautiful. The detailing on the kimono is exquisite and both of the hairstyles are lovely and great to work with in free dressing. 10/10.
Fire Tiger of Tail: I swear you can see both my aesthetic and animal companion bias in this list. Another suit I got super excited about when the event was announced. I completed BOTH the new Stars suits on the first day ahaha. The tiger is of course the part I wanted most but the dress is simply beautiful, the headdress is stunning an the oat looks so warm and fluffy I just want to huddle myself up inside of it. Also blue is my favourite colour an this suit captures like… my absolute favourite shades of blue on both ends of dark-light spectrum wonderfully. 10/10
Soul Seer: Mmmmm it’s a lovely suit but I wish, as many people have pointed out to the devs, that they’d make more skintones, especially darker ones, for this exact purpose. The game is Chinese so I know their racial sensibilities are different and that no harm was intended in a game full of fashion from cultures around the word alongside fantasy fashions buuuuuut with the suit have clear Native American influences alongside fantasy ones, it really would be great to have a skintone to go along with it so it didn’t seem so unintentionally appropriative. So that does hinder my ability to enjoy the suit in its entirety a lot. HOWEVER. I really love the hair, cape and shoes and I’ve used the shoes in so many sets since I got them oops. 6/10. Would be higher if the devs added more skintone diversity.

2:25 AM ET
BOSTON — Kyrie Irving saw the play unfolding before the rest of the Boston Celtics‘ bench, and his blazer-clad arm shot skyward, requesting the lob that would soon follow.
The Celtics were breaking out in transition late in the first half of Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Philadelphia 76ers. As Marcus Morris dribbled down the right side of the floor in front of Irving, the All-Star point guard’s eyes were already locked on Jaylen Brown sprinting on the opposite side of the court with only JJ Redick between the Boston players.
So as Morris reached the foul line and lofted the ball toward the rim, Irving shuffled a couple of steps closer to the baseline then crouched a bit on the left knee that required surgery last month and ended his 2017-18 season. It was an injury that was supposed to squash any remaining hopes of an extended postseason stay for these injury-ravaged Celtics.
Then, Brown — a game-time decision with the sore hamstring that kept him out of Game 1 — rose up and threw down a two-handed slam that threatened to dislodge TD Garden from its foundation. It capped a violent and completely improbable late-first-half run that spearheaded Boston’s comeback from a 22-point deficit.
And it simply felt like there was no way the Celtics were not going to complete their comeback after that.
Rookie Jayson Tatum scored a team-high 21 points, while Terry Rozier had 20 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds as the Celtics overcame the big deficit and then found the energy for one more fourth-quarter burst en route to a 108-103 triumph.
Even after the arena had cleared out following Thursday’s game, Brown — who finished with 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting and, despite the hamstring strain, contributed a couple of flashy dunks that worked the crowd into a lather — marveled at the decibel levels reached during Boston’s first-half surge.
“Man, I’ve never seen TD Garden like it was tonight,” he said. “I think I’ll remember that game forever. The way the crowd got behind us before the half. That last five minutes, man. The energy was insane. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that. Like that was the moment to definitely remember. Game 2, Philadelphia, 2018. For sure.”

Boston outscored Philadelphia 50-20 during one 16-minute stretch spanning from midway through the second quarter to late in the third frame. What made that run all the more wild was that it seemingly came out of nowhere for a Boston team that needed nearly the first 18 minutes of the game to total 26 points — then essentially doubled its output over the final 6:20 of the half.
Then came the deluge. And fans that had plenty of time to get primed for the unusually late 8:42 p.m. ET tip time were more than happy to revel in the comeback.
Their energy helped power the Celtics.
“You feel it a lot. Like, oh my gosh,” Celtics big man Al Horford said. “You’re out there, you’re exhausted, you’re tired. But when the Garden is rocking like that, it’s something, you just can’t quit. You just want to keep it going, you want to keep riding it. You don’t want to be in that position [of playing from behind], but you are, and we keep finding a way. We keep fighting.”
The Celtics lost Gordon Hayward to a season-ending ankle injury during the season opener in Cleveland, then saw Irving’s balky knee require season-ending surgery in April, but they have somehow kept themselves afloat while navigating tumultuous seas.
And now Boston, with its young roster, is two games away from a return trip to the Eastern Conference finals. How exactly are these Celtics doing this?
“It’s kinda funny, we’ve been getting the same question since the first game of the year. You know what I mean?” Brown said. “And we’re here in what, May? Is it May? And still getting the same question.
“Man, we just play basketball. We got a great coach in Brad Stevens, we’ve got a great front office in Danny Ainge and his crew, and we got some really tough talented guys in this locker room. When you put that three together, that’s what makes success.”
The Sixers had promised they wouldn’t shoot as poorly as they did in Game 1, and, true to their word, they blitzed the Celtics with a 3-point barrage. Redick scored the first eight points of the game and hit three first-quarter 3-pointers as the Sixers opened a double-digit advantage.
It only ballooned from there.
But these Celtics won’t just go away, no matter the adversity. Boston got an unexpected offensive boost from Marcus Smart (19 points overall on 6-of-13 shooting) in the first half, and it allowed the Celtics to hang around until things really jumped up a notch in the late first-half run.
The Celtics trailed by 20 with 3:54 to play in the second quarter and were a disheveled mess on both ends of the floor. That’s when Marcus Smart threw himself in front of a driving Ben Simmons and drew a charge call that might have changed the complexion of the game.
A bucket from Greg Monroe — dusted off after being shelved late in Boston’s first-round series against the Bucks — kick-started what would become a 17-3 burst, and Brown followed with a transition 3 soon after.
Then Rozier got cooking. A full-court sprint after a Sixers miss ended with Rozier Eurostepping his way through Robert Covington for a layup, much to the delight of Irving, who mimicked the move on the sideline with a wide smile.
Rozier and Smart paired up for three consecutive 3-pointers over a 66-second span as Boston moved within single digits. It was Brown’s alley-oop slam that pulled Boston to within 56-51 at halftime.
But the way the Garden roared late in the first half, it felt like there was little Philadelphia could do to hang on. Horford, who knows just how tough it can be for visiting teams here in the playoffs, marveled at the crowd noise.
These are the sort of moments that lured him to Boston.
“It’s just so much fun to be able to play in front of these kind of fans, they are so passionate,” Horford said. “They’re all about Boston. And it’s something that, as an opposing player, you feel it when you come in here.
“It’s one of those things with my decision [to sign in Boston] — these are the kind of the moments that I wanted to be here for.”

Roddacember Day 21 | Quest
“You know, I think it’s done Leo good, having Mimi in the house...it’s made him relax a bit. He seems more confident, somehow- less worried about doing the wrong thing. And he’s laughing more.”
Moodboards for when you join a team of professional questers because your (second) cousin wants to save her dog and everyone is really gung ho about this expect you, because you’ve spent your whole life doing the right thing- the sensible thing, and now you’re totally out of your element for this whole quest thing, but you’re on it anyway and hey- turns out you’re not too bad at it and this quest is literal but maybe also you’re on a quest of your own development wise and you start to grow into the person you’ve always wanted to be

Roddacember Day 14 | Kind
Leo Zifkak and Mimi Langlander
It’s sort of funny because as I was scanning the books for quotes I realised Mimi and Leo are kinda jerks to each other a lot of the time. The book’s are from Leo’s POV and he really doesn’t like Mimi at first, and the magical sensibilities of Rondo confuse him enough to annoy him. Mimi, in turn, is prickly and sour.
But they are also kind to a fault. They do kind things for people time and time again. That kindness sometimes manifest as anger and guilt, but Rondo is a world Mimi and Leo come to love, and they come to love each other, and I love experiencing that journey

Roddacember Day 6 | Epitome
Had trouble with this one but then I came across this quote in The Battle for Rondo while collecting other quotes for word maps, and thought it really beautifully summed up the epitome of Leo’s character- he’s anxious and an overthinker, and it’s these qualities that make him such a kind person even if it does sometimes cause trouble for the group
