OnlyOneOf appreciation + concert experience
My love for OnlyOneOf is new but immense! I only discovered them recently but fell into them so fast and so hard that I decided to travel out of state to attend the last stop of their Grand America Tour!
Tumblr media
A little over a month ago, my YouTube recommendations included a music video for "because" by Rie. As a BL enthusiast, I clicked because I saw two guys kissing in the thumbnail LOL, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good both the song and the video were. When I looked into it more, I found out that Rie is a member of OnlyOneOf, and that he was playing a couple in the MV with fellow member Junji! I also learned that "because" is the fourth in a series of six solo songs released by the group as part of their undergrOund idOl project, which explores themes of love and acceptance in support of the pride movement. The songs are all fantastic, each a different style to reflect their individuality, and the MVs, which feature the members paired off as couples, are beautifully shot and feel very intimate without fetishizing. I was so impressed with their music and the messages they were sending that I felt the need to look into them further.
In the comments on their solo videos, the song I saw mentioned most was libidO. I checked out the MV, then the "Guilty Pleasure" choreography video, and then a bunch of live performances. I was shooketh, it was soooooo sensual. I read that it received a lot of hate in Korea for being "controversial", but the boys stood by it and explained that the song is about a young man experiencing first love and exploring his sexuality, eventually deciding to leave it to instinct and primal desire aka libido. The MV and choreography express this concept perfectly, and honestly, it's so tastefully done in a way that is sexy, but not egregiously so, that I see no room for complaints.
I was hooked enough to do a deep dive into the rest of their discography where I found countless other songs, both title tracks and b-sides, that I loved. I'm not sure how to describe their sound in technical terms, but it's different and more experimental than most K-pop out there. They have a lot of songs that are mid-tempo, smooth, and sexy, and the way they process their vocals gives them this kind of ethereal, breathy effect. They have a very distinct sound and regardless of whether the song is an upbeat banger like seOul drift, a mid-tempo bop like gaslighting, or a slower, sentimental track like OnlyOneOf yOu, you can tell it's them. It's pretty niche, which unfortunately means less general public appeal and popularity, but I appreciate that they stay true to it and hope that one day it catches on. Either way, I was sold.
Of course, just because I like a group's music doesn't mean I go all out and commit myself as a fan. But I felt compelled to check out OOO's other content because I was curious about the group dynamics, seeing as how they seemed very comfortable acting as couples for their solo songs, libidO, and skinz. I'm sure this is true with most groups, but they are completely endearing crackheads! They are fun and silly, have great chemistry with each other (they are basically shipping themselves), and they show off their crazy abs on camera a LOT lol. I got sucked into them real quick.
One week later, I was pretty much a newborn lyOn club, and I was aware that they were touring in the US at that time. I still have huge regrets of not being able to see Seventeen in concert last year because I also found them while they were in the middle of their US tour, so I didn't want to experience the same thing with OOO and decided to check whether there were still tickets for any shows available. I live in Hawaii so it's not like I can just hop around the continent to see them, and I was in the middle of my busy season at work, so I had a lot of limiting factors. However, I saw that there were still general admission tickets for their show in LA, which was after my big work deadline. After finding a pretty good deal on airfare, I bit the bullet and bought concert tickets for me and my husband (bless him). YOLO, am I right??
In the few weeks before the the concert, I got more and more hyped and as I continued to fall even deeper into the lyOn den, I started to get a little greedy. I really wanted snapshot tickets for my two biases Nine and Yoojung. I was scouring Reddit and twitter in search of anyone selling, to no avail. But it's okay because two days before the concert, I was able to snag a VIP ticket from a kind Reddit user who was selling theirs because they could no longer attend the show. So even though I couldn't have individual polaroids with my favorites, I would be able to do a hi-touch with all of the members, plus a group photo! Ahhh!
04-30-2023 - GRAND AMERICA TOUR LOS ANGELES
Tumblr media
The LA show was held at the Avalon Hollywood, a nightclub which doubles as a concert venue. We arrived at the venue and started lining up for VIP at around 4:15. Once they started letting VIP into the venue, my husband (again, bless this extremely supportive man) went to go stand in the general admission line while I went on ahead. I'm pretty shy and everyone around me was with another friend, so I didn't really talk to anyone while waiting. But once we got let into the room where the hi-touch and group photo were happening, the girls in front of me started freaking out so naturally I freaked out with them hehe. It was comforting because it was the first time doing hi-touch for all of us.
The hi-touch/group photo happened so fast, I wish I had a little more time to soak it in. I high-fived each member and definitely looked at them while I was doing it, but the only one who I can clearly remember now is Yoojung. The man is so beautiful that he dazzled me into remembering only his face, even over my number one bias Nine! xD For the group photo, I stood behind Junji and Yoojung and was probably cheesing so hard, I hope I come out looking okay in the photo lol. And that was it! But even in such a short time, I could sense the members' kindness and sincerity. They are seated for the group photo, but they stand up for the hi-touch and thank each fan as they go by. And then after the photo is taken and we're exiting, they stand up again and turn around to greet us on our way out. I was starstruck. Ugh, next time maybe I'll splurge for VVIP so I can get a few more seconds with each member~
The venue was standing only, so VIP got to enter after VVIP was all settled in. I'm a shortie, and I had done my research prior so there was a second-floor balcony that I was aiming for. Luckily, it was still open when I got in so I made a dash for it and secured a spot against the balcony railing, with an unobstructed view of the stage below. It was perfect for me and since the venue is small, I still felt so close. My husband joined me once general admission was let in and to his joy, there were couches behind us that he could rest on lol.
The concert itself was absolutely amazing! The boys, who I'm sure were exhausted as this was the last of an 18-stop tour over the course of one month, brought 110% of their energy to every performance. Before seeing them live, I was thinking that maybe some of their choreography just looks cool because of good camerawork, but I was wrong, they really are that cool. Moments I can't believe I saw in real life:
The entirety of skinz, especially Yoojung and Mill's body rolls, and the KB/Yoojung moment in the second verse
The chest popping in gaslighting
THAT part by Yoojung in the final chorus of chrOme hearts
Crazy chemistry between Junji and Rie during be mine
Iconic libidO crotch grabbing by Nine
KB destroying his shirt during a sOng Of ice&fire
Rie saying "OMG pleeeease everyone, jump!!!" for angel, and everyone really jumping!
I had also seen someone on Reddit who was disappointed after attending OOO's first show because they felt they weren't singing live (I'm thinking it was a sound mixing issue rather than the members actually not singing), but for this concert I could definitely hear them over the backtrack and they were so good! During one of the breaks, they took requests to sing parts of songs that they wouldn't be performing, and this was another testament to how well they can sing. I was screaming because I got to hear a bit of byredO live.
Just as they gave their full energy for their songs, they did the same for their ments in between. They are so personable, sweet, and funny, and full of fan service! They also tried their best to speak in English when they could, which was extra endearing. And I may be delulu but they definitely waved in my general direction of the balcony a few times, so I excitedly waved back! At the end when they took the group photo with the audience, they accepted pride flags from fans and set it in front of them or draped it over their shoulders. Stan these supportive, inclusive kings. *Flag not pictured below because Studio Pav doesn't have Pride :\
Tumblr media
The very last song was OnlyOneOf yOu and it was magical hearing them sing this beautiful number while the crowd held up their phone flashlights and swayed them to the beat. When they finally left the stage, I was overwhelmed with happiness, wishing the concert could go on for like three hours more, and a certfied lyOn. I'm totally rooting for OOO's success and hope they come back to America again someday soon!

All the freebies (lyOns are such creative people ❤️) as well as my snapshots and signed album from the fansign, and the light stick I used (8D give them their own fanlight! They were so excited over the light sticks and kept asking for certain colors, please! Give them one!)
I have a million and a half cute, funny, embarrassing, etc stories from the concert. What an overall amazing night of memories, new friends, and new stories to carry with me. I can’t wait to do it again.
(Sappy ramble under the cut about the past, present, etc)
It was the first I’ve been to since the pandemic, and the first I’ve ever gone to alone. I was nervous that I wouldn’t have fun, wouldn’t be able to connect, etc - since up until this I’d had a friend with me.
I ended up having nothing to worry about. Shortly before the concert I ended up in a chat with a group of amazing people, many of whom I met at the concert and we clicked immediately. We hung out after the concert, and already have made plans to hang out again with a few of them.
I’d always struggled with putting myself out there in person and finding friends in the past. My self esteem and own negative mindset prevented me from even trying, let alone working to maintain those potential connections. I’ve been working on having a new mindset about myself and others, and have been proud of my progress.
But was the first time I could really put the new mindset and things I’d learned into practice - and I am so overwhelmed with joy at how it turned out.
Obviously this isn’t directly related to OOO - but in a way it is. I ended up stumbling onto them at the right time (well - dragged into them by a friend bc we both needed a new group), and their message connected with me, and made me feel good — like this was a fandom where I wasn’t the weird outlier fan. The fandom is wildly diverse in a broader way than most groups I’ve gotten into, and the group encourages that diversity openly.
This meant the concert was a place where I wouldn’t feel out of place, and wouldn’t have to be worried about how I was perceived. This allowed me to be myself and really try to make new connections. Add that to the general support from the group (and that support is so genuine - no weirdness at all no matter the gender, age, etc of the fan, they were genuine and sweet and friendly with all of us.
So while not directly related to OOO - it was their willingness to be a safe space for everyone that allowed us to make these new connections and forge the starts of new friendships. 🥹
Well, there now, enough of the sappy stuff. I said at the start that I have a lot of fun stories from the night - I would be happy to make a post or share some if anyone was interested!

Countries/States that each of the ericsons would like to go ???
Ooo, good ask! Okay let's see
Clem: She would probably enjoy driving aimlessly and seeing what all the states had to offer. Outside of America, she'd probably look up the best spots to check out and go there. Definitely going to go to Paris too to spend time with a special someone.
Louis: He wants to go anywhere and everywhere. He would have a blast going to all the different places and the funds to comfortably do so. Probably one of his favorite spots would be Paris.
Violet: She'd want to see the Grand Canyon so that's where she'd head. She would go on along with others if they set up a road trip. Besides that, Russia would be cool to visit and India too but she'd probably go with a certain someone. It's Prisha.
Marlon: He seems like the all-American boy so he'd probably focus more on the states and would point out that he'd like to visit LA, New York, probably North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota (that's where we think he was born so it's home to him)
Brody: She would dream about going to all fifty states and doing this big road trip. That would be her goal. Mitch would help soup up an RV and get it all set to go. Brody would probably take along anyone who wants to come with so Louis is definitely going to be a travel buddy of hers. After the road trip, Louis would get Brody to go with him on the tour of the world.
Mitch: He would be down for all the weird attractions with Willy. Both of them are the most hype about that. Plus Mitch gets to spend time with Brody so he's going to all the states. Outside of America, hmmm not sure but if Louis is footing the bill for the world trip he'd probably tag along.
Aasim: He probably has one of those maps of all the States with slots over each state for the state coins and he will get all those state coins. He needs them. Outside of America, he would probably like to see Greece and Rome and also India.
Ruby: She would probably want to go to Texas and some of the southern states. Outside of that, honestly, she'd probably just go along with places Brody is excited about. She'd be happy to have a bestie road trip with her.
Willy: He would probably be more focused on the "coolest" state attractions. World's Largest Buffalo Monument in North Dakota? Um Yes. Fremont Troll in Seattle? Let's go! The Corn Palace in South Dakota? He's already in the car and bouncing in his seat impatiently.
AJ: When he was asked this question he just answered with Legoland and Disneyland then got upset that they weren't states or countries. Luckily, on the all states road trip they would stop there. As long as he can be with friends and Clem he's chill with wherever they go. Just make sure Legoland and Disneyland are on the list of stops.
Tenn: Tennessee, obviously, lol. Nah, well, he probably would like that but honestly, Tenn would like to go wherever his sisters go. He'd probably love all the music and art experiences he would have with them.
Omar: Omar would join the all states road trip and just focus on all the different types of food. Outside of America, he would enjoy visiting Tokyo, Japan, Lyon, France, Barcelona, Spain
Sophie: She would totally be down for a road trip of all the States but outside of America, she'd want to visit some art centers of the world. So Paris, Venice, Berlin, London, Shanghai. Honestly watch Louis foot the bill for all these trips for his friends.
Minnie: Based on the calendar we see in the room that Clementine wakes up in TFS and it being the twins' old room Grand Canyon is a must of what both Sophie and Minnie want to see. Besides that, she'd want to go to the most musically talented or states/cities known for music. So New York, LA, Chicago, Nashville, Tennessee, spots like that. Also would be down with going to Mexico.
James: He would probably just go where the wind takes him in terms of States so he's fine with going to any of them. Besides that, South Korea would be on his list of places to visit.
Long story short it looks like the Ericson kids are all going on a road trip together and it starts off something like this
Louis, on the phone which has the speaker on: Vi, come out!
Violet: I'm gay
Brody: No, to the car.
Violet: Car, I'm gay
Everyone:
Sophie: I've got her
Five minutes later
Sophie: *walking out of the apartment with Violet held up like a cat in her arms* I've got the grumpy one! Roadtrip time! :D
Everyone: *cheers*

So cool to see someone else who's a fan of them!! I loved all those episodes too. The America special with the old cars and the Africa special are my top favorites. I also like the one where Jeremy and James are in a truck, driving in a snowy place, but I can't seem to find that episode anywhere.
samee!! they r flipping amazing and it’s just so nice to have finally gotten the chance to fangirl over em 🥰😭 Ooo I haven’t finished the shows yet, so I am not sure what episode you are talking about. do you have a rough idea which season dat episode is from? and ohhh is it from top gear or the grand tour? i might be able to help if i knew what to look for 💖

Kurtbastian one-shot - “Show Stealer” (Rated PG13)
Kurt is trying to show his family and friends his Cornell admissions video, but someone keeps snagging his spotlight. (1734 words)
Notes: So this comes some time after Blaine moves in with Sebastian and before Kurt gets into Cornell. It's inspired by all of the videos we watch of people skating on YouTube, that they film themselves at their rinks, and the unfortunate people stuck in the background. I know that I'm in the background of a few videos, and I often wonder - how was my hair? Did I look fat? Was I doing something stupid? XD Blaine friendly.
Part 29 of Outside Edge
Read on AO3
“Kurt? Are you okay in there, honey?” Elizabeth calls, anxiously waiting on the sofa beside her husband, with Sebastian and Blaine occupying the arm chairs, all eager for Kurt to give them the ‘big presentation’ he’s gathered them together for.
“Yeah, babe! We’ve been sittin’ here for fifteen minutes! I’ve already finished my bowl of popcorn!”
“Okay, okay! I’m coming!” Kurt emerges from the kitchen, sashaying into the living room with a bottle of sparkling cider and four plastic flutes in hand. “Thank you for your patience,” he says, doling out the glasses. “And without further ado ...”
Burt takes the bottle from Kurt to help open and pour. “Without further ado what exactly?”
His hands free, Kurt digs into his back pocket and pulls out a flash drive. “I present to you - my Cornell admissions video!”
“Oh! This is so exciting!” Elizabeth squeals, barely holding still enough for Burt to fill her glass. “My baby’s applying to college!”
“It’s just a technicality,” Sebastian assures her. “There’s no way Cornell isn’t going to accept the most talented figure skater in America, especially with the GPA he’s packing.”
“But how did you get it done so quickly?” Blaine asks as Kurt plugs the drive into the Blu-ray player. “Didn’t you just start making it yesterday morning?”
“It’s not complete. This is the main body of my video – me showing off my skills. I still have to film an introduction. Plus, I want to include clips of me coaching, a tour of the trophy case at the rink, that sort of thing …”
“I told you, you should hire a professional videographer.” Sebastian puts a hand on Kurt’s hip and pulls his boyfriend onto his lap. “I know a guy. He can record you skating down at my rink where it’s private, where he can control the sound and the lighting, splice in some footage of you competing, a montage of you receiving your medals …”
“But doesn’t that seem like overkill?” Kurt argues while he fiddles with the Blu-ray remote, preparing to press play. “I mean, I’ve already made a name for myself in this sport. Do I want to toot my own horn that loudly?”
“Yes!” Sebastian and Blaine agree in unison.
“I want to keep things simple,” Kurt continues, undeterred. “I don’t want to stand out because of my previous accomplishments. I mean, we all know that some judges are biased. I want my skating to speak for itself, and the best way for me to do that is to make a video that’s the same quality as everyone else’s is going to be.”
“But you’re not everyone else,” Sebastian says, putting an arm around Kurt’s waist and squeezing. “You’re Kurt Hummel, National Champion and Olympic hopeful. You’ve earned the right to go to any school in the country that has a skating program that meets your criteria, not the other way around.”
“Well, in this case, my criteria is go to the same school as my boyfriend.”
“I think Sebastian’s right,” Blaine says, earning him a wink from Sebastian and a roll of Kurt’s eyes. “Presentation is everything in figure skating, and the competition to get into Ivy League schools is stiff, even for someone with your impressive athletic background. A professionally produced video might seem like overkill to you, but it could be the thing that edges you one step ahead of another equally impressive applicant.”
“Blaine’s right, kiddo,” Burt says. “Never doubt the power of a good first impression.”
“Also,” Elizabeth chimes in, “not having a professionally produced video might make you appear cocky, as if you think you don’t need to pull out all the stops you’re capable of in order to get in.”
“Wha---?” Kurt stares at his friends and family, so nonchalantly bursting the bubble he’d been happily floating around in since he’d finished editing. “Y--you guys haven’t even seen my video yet, and you’re already telling me it’s not good enough to get me into Cornell!”
A collective sigh of guilt passes around the room. Sebastian whispers, “I’m sorry,” into Kurt’s back, accompanied by a trail of gentle kisses.
“I’m sorry, too, kiddo.”
“Me, three, Kurt.”
“You’re right,” Elizabeth says, reaching over to put an apologetic hand on her son’s knee. “Turn on the video. Let’s take a look at what you’ve got.”
“Okay,” Kurt says, a spark of excitement springing back up in his stomach. “So, I recorded this on my phone down at the Ice-plex. It highlights my upper level elements – double and triple Axel, loop, Lutz, Salchow, my original footwork, and my spin combinations.”
“What? No quads?” Sebastian teases.
“There may be one or two in there,” Kurt hints, peeking over his shoulder to wink at his boyfriend. “I’m not sayin’.”
“Oh my goodness! Who’s that little sweetheart in the background?” Elizabeth asks, pointing to the screen. Both Blaine and Burt aww with her before Kurt has the chance to turn around.
“I don’t know.” Kurt shrugs. “Just some kid who showed up early with his mom. I don’t think I’ve ever met them before.”
“He reminds me of you when you started out,” Burt says with a sentimental click of his tongue. “Look at those tiny Riedell skates!”
“He even looks like you!” Blaine says. “Look at those swooped-up bangs! And that stubborn little chin!”
“Yeah, yeah, he’s adorable,” Kurt grumbles, wishing he could skip past this section infected by that show stealer in a baby blue puff coat. He makes a mental note to go back through his video later and edit him out if he can. “Can we focus on me? I’m about to perform my triple Axel-triple loop combination. It only took me one try to get it the way I wanted it.”
“Okay, okay!” his mother says, but leans in to her husband’s ear to coo about the wobbly attempt at a scratch spin the little boy makes before the video cuts to the next scene.
Jump after spin after spin after jump is met with polite and appreciative ooo’ing and ahh’ing for Kurt, but increasingly more comments about the boy in the background. Remarks about how cute he looks in his shiny black skates top the charts; followed by commentary on his fashion sense (at one point, he unzips his coat to reveal a dark blue cardigan sweater and a red-and-white polka dot bowtie, which, again, draw more comparisons between the little skater and a young Kurt); and then on his determination and burgeoning skating skill.
But none of his antics, no matter how charming, win Kurt over. The miniature heathen’s attempt at a camel spin completely detracts attention away from Kurt’s perfectly executed quad loop!
How did Kurt not notice this interloper in the background the first time around? He probably did, but just ignored him – THE WAY EVERYONE ELSE SHOULD BE DOING!!
“Okay, guys! Watch this! This is my grand finale quad-triple-triple combination!” Kurt spills the beans even though he’d intended on keeping the details secret, in the hopes of winning back the favor of his fickle audience.
For the first time since they started watching Kurt’s video, a hush falls across the living room, all eyes remaining glued to the screen and (Kurt hopes) his upcoming feat. He’d had to push back pretty far to get the whole combo in from the angle he was filming, but it came out better than he’d hoped, all three jumps – quad Salchow, triple toe loop, triple loop – captured in frame.
“Aw!” the group exclaims in unison as Kurt’s blade hits the ice for the final time. Sebastian flinches. Burt grimaces. Blaine hisses. Elizabeth gasps.
“What?” Kurt looks at their faces, each one marred with an expression of pain. “What’s wrong!? That was perfect! Picture perfect!” Kurt says, gesturing emphatically to the screen where the combination plays again, this time in slow motion.
“No, sweetie. Not that. Your jump was amazing. But the little boy. He fell. See?” Elizabeth says sadly. She grasps her husband’s hand, overwhelmed by the memories of a younger, less experienced Kurt’s falls, the times he landed on his rear when he should have landed on an edge. His watery eyes, his wails of pain, embarrassment, and disappointment, his mother rushing to his side to make sure he was okay.
Kurt turns back to the screen, peering past his own image to see the boy sitting on his backside on the ice, bawling his eyes out, while his mom takes a knee to give him a hug.
“Didn’t you go help him?” Elizabeth asks.
“No,” Kurt says, mildly offended. “Why should I? His mom was there! He was fine!”
“But he fell trying to do the jump you were doing!” his mother points out.
“And you’re a junior coach,” his dad adds. “Your job is to help skaters at the rink. You should have at least made sure he was okay.”
“I don’t believe this!” Kurt says, throwing up his hands. His mother reaches over Kurt’s knee and snatches the Blu-ray remote. She rewinds the video to replay the poor boy’s fall, presumably to make sure that things turned out okay in the end. Everyone gasps when - beyond the spectacle of Kurt’s own epic landing and impeccable form - the little boy, with eyes on Kurt, sets up to leap into the air, teeters too far backwards, and plops down on his rear. His lower lip trembles, then he drops his head back and sobs. Kurt sighs. He knows when he’s been bested.
In this case, theoretically, he just lost his spot at Cornell to a four-year-old boy in a bowtie and a puff coat.
“Sebastian, go call your friend,” Kurt says, standing from his boyfriend’s lap. “And grab your coat.”
“Why?” Sebastian asks, not taking his eyes off the boy on the screen. He beams when the boy succeeds, through tears, to land a modest Waltz Jump, and cheers along with Elizabeth, Burt, and Blaine when he repeats it two times in a row. Kurt grabs Sebastian’s hand and drags him off the chair.
“We’re going to drive down to your rink and do some horn tooting.”
“Kurt!” Sebastian scolds, following his boyfriend to the front door. “You shouldn’t say things like that in front of your parents!”
Kurt stops a foot from the doorway, confused, but scowls when he figures it out.
“Sebastian! That’s not what I meant!”
