Remember Vivi met Luffy, like, yesterday. Using smaller arcs like Little Garden and Drum to develop a genuine and deep connection to Vivi builds up a lot of goodwill in the reader by the time Alabasta rolls around. We care about characters like Kohza and King Cobra because Vivi does, making the conflict must more personal and engaging.

Vivi and Kohza

Kohza has always been willing to die for his ideals. From the time he rushed into the palace seeking King's help as a child, to the time he protected Vivi from kidnappers and left with his father to start a trade town. To the present where he leads the rebellion against the King. He has strong beliefs and he isn't afraid to act on them.

This is contrasted with Vivi's kindness. More than herself getting hurt, she is afraid of others getting hurt on her behalf. That's why she can be so brave and apologize to Wapol to prevent conflict between their nations. Even though Wapol was the one that hit her.

The situation in Alabasta must be unbearable for a person like her yet she still manages to worry for others to the point where even Usopp comments on it.

It's a good thing that she is travelling with the Straw Hats who could make her laugh and take her mind off the Alabasta situation.

Oda manages to write strong willed and very likeable children.

Okay, do you remember when I've told you that I didn't like Vivi very much when I watched One Piece for the first time?

That stemmed from the impression that she wasn't doing much in the Straw Hats crew - she wasn't fighting, she didn't have any useful skills, she only cried and whined. Now I see that she actually provides information about Arabasta (albeit often a little too late).

Her father, king Cobra, on the other hand...

I'm on episode 100th and in the flashback Kohza runs to the king, talking about drought and asking Cobra to do something about it, and the king only say that he doesn't control the nature and proposes Kohza and his father to stay in the palace "to think about their future".

And I've just realized that in almost every scene he's in, king Cobra is presented as receiving news about how terrible his subjects have it, with drought, rebellion etc., and his only action is saying sorry or give some promises, but other than that he doesn't do much. He doesn't do anything about the Dance Powder, he doesn't do anything about the drought, he doesn't even do anything about the rebels.

Vivi risks her life, while her father does nothing but talk. We are to think that he's a benevolant ruler who cares about his subjects and is conspired against by this evil Sir Crocodile, but actually he's fucking useless. No wonder his subjects are rebelling.

And you might say: "But Meg, there's nothing much he can do about the drought and he's not able to know or do anything about what is happening in the desert.", and I will say to that: I would welcome any kind of action from this guy - water import, building wells, incorporating preservation measures, anything other than sitting on the throne and doing fuck all. Let me see that he at least tries to do something about the situation, because so far it looks like Vivi only makes excuses for her dad.

Well, at least in the flashback he's doing something. I guess he got useless over time.

i love this pairing! i think they would be a really cute couple. kohza seems like a good guy for vivi and their interactions were really cute. i think they would be good as a couple. :) i kinda don’t know how to explain myself, but anyways i ship it.

Every time I see fanart of them or read fics about them I just love them so much and a whole new world gets stuck in my head (because too many of those are based off of Aladdin).
