You know, every so often I think I should update my pirated copy of CS2.
Then I see things like this, and remember that I don't need it more than I need it, you know?

The fact that Apple reportedly sells Apple TVs for $100+ and they’re STILL at a loss should tell you just how shady the smart TV market is. When you buy a Roku or a Smart TV, you’re buying a screen grabber. I’m not kidding. Most modern Smart TVs have a screen monitoring program built in to content match whatever you’re watching or playing (yes, even on external HDMI inputs) and sell that data to advertisers. The reason flat screen TVs have gotten so cheap isn’t because of production costs falling, but rather these companies selling the hardware to you at a loss, and then secretly selling your information and viewing habits to make up the difference. I’m not exaggerating. They’re are guides online on how to disable this screen grabbing software on a per TV-manufacturer basis. I highly recommend you look them up, or simply never connect your TV to the internet in the first place and deny it access to do so.

For fun, I decided to create a survey of my own for anyone to take. I set up this one a little differently, so not only is this gathering important fandom data, but at the end you'll also get a quiz result with which of teletubbies I think you'd be based on your answers. No redos, and my assessment of your teletubby status is objectively correct.

The LastPass hack in November was much worse than we were initially led to believe. Catastrophically worse. And it came after an earlier breach last August. The entire situation has been a disaster of opacity, sparse information sharing and the company making efforts to retain business at the expense of user security, which was the only thing we were paying them for.
I’ve just migrated over to 1Password, which was fortunately a very easy process, because now I begin the painstaking and time eating process of updating every password that I haven’t changed since that November breach. Nothing can be assumed safe.
If you stuck with LassPass, you should really change that today. And if you’re an iOS/MacOS premium account holder, demand a refund; if Apple is processing refunds to third-party Twitter app users for something that those companies didn’t do (Twitter shut off their access) then they should certainly do likewise here when the company is wholly at fault.

Regarding the SIM Card and Social Media Registration Act
because people still reblog these posts on it, and it's time I personally update everyone about it.
For those unaware: the SIM Card and SocMed Registration Act was a bill initially intended as counteraction against trolls and spreaders of misinformation on social media.
It was, however, found to be unconstitutional, criminalizing the right to anonymity and pseudonymity on the Internet and is a violation of Filipinos' rights to privacy, freedom of speech, and freedom of association (Democracy.Net.PH).
Tumblr media
c. For using fictitious identites to register SIM cards or social media accounts. — The penalty of imprisonment of no less than six (6) years, or a fine of up to Two hundred thousand pesos (₱200,000.00), or both, shall be imposed upon anyone who uses a fictitious identity to purchase and register a SIM cards or social media account.
This is a direct violation of the 1987 Constitution, particularly Article III Sections 3 (1) and 4.
Tumblr media
Above is a screenshot of Microsoft Edge from my laptop. The tab is showing a webpage from the Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines. The text shown is from Article III, the Bill of Rights, but the highlighted text are Sections 3 (1) and 4. They read, “SECTION 3. (1) The privacy of communication and correspondence shall be inviolable except upon lawful order of the court, or when public safety or order requires otherwise as prescribed by law,” and “SECTION 4. No law shall be passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievances.”
With this in mind, it was imperative that word spread of how dangerous the Act was and to have the then-President Rodrigo Duterte veto it.
It was vetoed on April 15, 2022.
Tumblr media
This was, as @katsurolle said, "half a win for online anonymity." It was only vetoed because the this bill would also endanger and penalize paid political trolls in the Philippines.
Half a win as it was... there was a collective sigh of relief from the Filipino people.
This half-victory had been only short-lived.
Four months into presidency, President Bongbong Marcos signed a revised SIM Card Registration bill into law on October 10, 2022.
It is meant to reduce cybercrime — spam and scam texts, more especially.
According to Office of the Press Secretary officer-in-charge Cheloy Garafil, the SIM Card Registration Act aims to provide “accountability in the use of SIM cards and aid law enforcers to track perpetrators of crimes committed through phones.”
The signing of the measure will likewise “significantly boost government initiatives against scams committed through text and online messages, which have become more prevalent this year.”
This, however, brings forth a new concern: data leaks.
Scam texts in the Philippines have been containing the receiver's names, and it's been very likely that private information on the internet has been leaked.
Tumblr media
I have more that go as far as July.
There are certainly many issues that need to be resolved first, but as far as the SIM Card Registration Law is concerned, its execution is well underway. Globe Telecom's subscribers have already been receiving a text that looks like this:
Tumblr media
Hi! Get ready to start your Globe Prepaid SIM registration journey on December 27, 2022. For more info, please visit https://glbe.co/simregfaq
I just hope the SIM Card Registration Law will be as effective as national goverment officials claim it to be.
Thank you to everyone who spread awareness of the SIM Card and Social Media Registration Act — I'm very grateful.
That will be all, and thank you for reading.

Online Security
Slowly, I've been taking steps toward protecting my online identity and property. People may say "it doesn't matter, they know everything about me anyway," but they think mining data only pertains to targeted marketing.
It's more than that. It's the data that other nations collect on us, to build their next hostile cyber campaign to influence or confuse the more susceptible portions of our population, before the next election. It has to do with identity theft, how much information actors in China and India can collect on you, to credibly imitate you to an elderly family member and extort a few thousand dollars out of them.
Storing property in the cloud isn't even safe anymore. Anything you store in Google Drive is accessible by Google to develop Bard, its limping competitor to Chat GPT. So tonight, I've deleted everything in my two primary Google Drives, having downloaded and backed them up onto my computer's drive and an external drive. I have a pile of reformatted HDs from previous computers, adding up to a dozen terabytes, so storage space isn't a concern.
It will be inconvenient to develop new habits, writing documents in Word (or some free shareware equivalent) as I create new stories or develop new podcast episodes, but it's not impossible. Neuroplasticity is so important to preserve and cultivate.
Still, it feels like stepping in blind faith off the edge of a cliff to grab my online life, pack it into a zip folder, store it somewhere on my machine and then delete all the online traces. But how would I access the cloud if the grid went down, let's say for a day? Would I just read books and write letters, waiting for notification that everything was online and operational the next day... or the next?
Along with this, I've completed my biannual Great Password Update, and not only have I updated all my passwords, I've deleted 17 unused accounts, and I'm transferring my logins from Gmail to Protonmail. I know people look down on Substack and Protonmail as red flags of something suspicious, but shit. Look how many legitimate accounts have been deleted from YoutTube, just because they presented inconvenient (but well substantiated) information? You have to go wherever your interests will be protected, where freedom of expression still carries some weight. At least, until they get taken down too.
Lastly, if you're on Xitter and looking for an excuse to stop funding Nazis, I have several BlueSky activation codes, so reach out to me.

People posting stuff like "It's so funny that Twitter users want to censor themselves as they move here, stuff like not telling people to die," like y'all realize that telling people to die isn't something that's bad just because you may get banned or hurt their feelings, right?
Like for all the self-proclaimed leftists on here who say shit like "ACAB" and "fuck the police state," y'all's knowledge of online security and how the shit that you post (which is all publicly available) can be legally used against you is almost non-existent. And that's saying a lot coming from me because I'm a fucking dumbass about this shit! My online security is terrible! The fact that I know even slightly more about this shit than a lot of people on this site posting essays about leftist ideology is just embarrassing.
Not posting shit like that isn't just about not being mean or not getting banned. It's also just a fucking smart thing to avoid.

I know I shouldn't speak of the demon in this manner, but Reddit still has a lot of active communities with useful information for troubleshooting tech and app problems. So, if you ABSOLUTELY need to use Reddit for something, but you're facing false-positive NSFW filters and Reddit's new "Empty User Agent" VPN Blocker pop-up, then replace the "www" with "old."
"old.reddit.com" only has the old-school "select yes if you're 18+" pop-up and doesn't ever give you the "Empty User Agent" message when browsing with a VPN.
It won't have the pretty, modern UI that most people are used to, but tbh, the old UI actually works surprisingly well on mobile, despite honing from the Web 1.0 days.
