Social Media Comedian: Renny
Not only does Godfrey substantiate Renny’s comedic success...
“Ms. Johnson…” Renny shifts his lean as if the liquid of his head seeped suddenly to one side. “Let me ha’dat.” An audio voice-over is dubbed in sync with the gestures of a woman you can only see from behind. Ms. Johnson slaps him. The camera rushes in on nostrils and the whites of his eyes. Renny breathes with his whole body, mouth open enough for the flies to clear, teeth peering easily under…

A Breakdown on the Evolution of Clowns
1. The Prankster Ancestor:
The clown species can be traced back to a distant common ancestor known as the Prankster Primus. This mischievous creature had a knack for playful antics and had developed basic comedic adaptations to ward off predators. Its ability to mimic sounds and movements for diversion laid the foundation for the evolutionary path toward laughter.
2. The Jester Epoch:
As time passed, a subgroup of Prankster Primus evolved into the Jester Epoch. These beings developed more sophisticated humor, using wit, jest, and physical comedy to entertain their social groups. The Jesters were the first to experiment with colorful costumes and facial expressions, setting the stage for the vibrant appearance of future clown species.
3. The Buffoon Branch:
From the Jester Epoch emerged the Buffoon Branch, a lineage characterized by exaggerated features and slapstick humor. Buffoons embraced physical comedy, incorporating elements like oversized shoes, comically large noses, and pratfalls into their performances. This marked the beginning of the distinct clown aesthetic that we recognize today.
4. The Circus Evolution:
As societies developed, so did the need for entertainment. The Circus Evolution saw the integration of clowns into traveling shows and performances. The evolving clown species adapted to the demands of the stage, perfecting their comedic timing and mastering the art of engaging large audiences.
5. The Technicolor Transformation:
In a burst of evolutionary creativity, the Technicolor Transformation introduced vibrant colors and intricate patterns to clown attire. This adaptation not only enhanced the visual appeal of clowns but also served as a form of communication. The more colorful the clown, the more likely they were to attract attention and laughter.
6. The Bozo Boom:
A significant milestone in clown genealogy was the Bozo Boom, during which the iconic character Bozo the Clown emerged. Bozo's popularity influenced the evolution of clown traits, shaping the modern understanding of what constitutes a classic clown. The Bozo Boom marked a period of cultural significance for the clown species.
7. The Globalization of Giggles:
In recent times, the globalization of entertainment has led to the spread of clown species across the world. Clowns from different regions have adapted to local humor, creating a rich tapestry of comedic diversity. The genealogy of clowns now spans various subtypes, from the traditional circus clown to the modern street performer.
8. The Digital Jest:
In the age of technology, the Digital Jest has emerged as a subcategory of clowns adapting to online platforms. Memes, GIFs, and virtual performances have become integral parts of the clown species' evolution, ensuring their continued relevance in the ever-changing landscape of entertainment.

IMAGINE Satoru and Suguru as fucking YouTubers, circa 2014-2018.
Ohmygod they would be SO entertaining, I swear. This AU lives in my head rent-free at the moment, so let me word-vomit about it.
Tumblr media
It all started with Satoru... Things like this, of course it starts with Satoru.
Satoru gives me storytime YouTuber vibes. His channel started out that way. It's just him talking about how crazy his life is. But after he amassed a following, around 100K, he eventually became a variety sort of YouTuber.
Satoru does a LOT. His channel is INSANE. From food challenges, to trying weird food on camera, to going to haunted locations, to putting weird stuff in the microwave to see what will happen (his house is permanently in danger), to failed cooking videos, right down to trying random products he finds in online stores.
Trust me, it doesn't take him long to get to 10 Million subscribers. Probably 10 months or less. That face card ain't declining and he's always going to pull people left and right.
In the beginning, a lot of Satoru's traffic came from Instagram. It's just him looking so aesthetically pleasing, he's irresistible. His Twitter is a mess. Twitter is where he shitposts, and people know better than to take him seriously on Twitter. His Snapchat... Good lord, help the poor soul who's following him on there. It's random shenanigans that would have you questioning if Gojo is okay.
For the first two years of his YouTube career, Satoru has been doing this YouTuber thing solo.
And then his best friend, Suguru Geto, made his debut on his channel and it's OVER.
His fans fell in love with Suguru. Of course, they would. Tell me you wouldn't love him? (in an AU where Suguru is innocent and has never attempted to commit crimes against humanity).
Tumblr media
Also, Suguru is deadass charming when he wants to be.
Satoru and Suguru = iconic comedic duo.
Satoru's views and engagement skyrocketed from the moment Suguru was introduced to his YT audience.
At first, Suguru kept all his social media accounts private, and Satoru was always careful and mindful about what appeared on camera.
Eventually, Satoru influenced Suguru to start his own YT channel.
Suguru Geto strikes me as the type who would have a niche YT channel. Like, he targets a specific audience. The opposite of Gojo's chaotic variety channel.
I kind of find it hard to pin down what sort of content Suguru would upload, but I'm leaning toward day-in-the-life vlogs, fitness, travel vlogs, and commentaries.
If you want serious, educational, aesthetic, and calm content, head over to Suguru's channel.
If you want unhinged shenanigans and pure chaos, Satoru Gojo is your guy.
Satoru promoting Suguru's channel after a failed cooking video be, like:
=OoOoO= =OoOoO= =OoOoO= =OoOoO=
"Well, it's whatever!" Satoru laughed, side-eyeing the messy slop on the countertop that he'd had the audacity to call a donut cake before the entire video devolved into him and Suguru flinging globs of cream cheese and chocolate frosting at each other across the kitchen.
"Who is going to finish all this?" Suguru lamented, eyes narrowing at the pile of food on Satoru's marble counters.
"What are you talking about? We're eating that!"
"Oh fuck no!"
"Yes!"
"No, Satoru."
"Yeeeesss!" Satoru cackled and flung an arm around Suguru's shoulders, bringing his friend into the frame for the special announcement he'd teased at the beginning of this video. "Now come here, it's time to tell them our surprise."
"Our surprise?"
Satoru laughed. "Well, your surprise, but you did this thanks to me~ You're welcome, by the way."
Releasing a deep sigh at the sound of Satoru crooning into his ear, Suguru shook his head. Satoru was more excited about the announcement than Suguru himself would ever be.
"Are you telling them?" Satoru asked, blinking at Suguru over the rims of his dark Versace sunglasses.
"Nah, you do it."
"Everyone, Suguru finally has a YouTube channel!" Satoru announced gleefully, the widest grin splitting his face as he wrestled Suguru into a headlock. A headlock that the latter had no problem prying himself away from. "After a whole year trying to convince his stubborn ass! And the first video is already up right?"
"Two videos, but yeah, they should go check it out if they want." Suguru nodded, flashing an easy smile at the camera, and towards millions of Satoru's lovestruck fans.
"Two! He's fast! Go check it out, guys. Suguru's channel is in the description below. It's the first one there. If you guys need something to help you relax or--"
"--To cleanse your palette after this madness."
"Hey! Rude! They love my cake videos!"
"That's not cake, Satoru."
Neither of them acknowledged the sloppy pile of donuts coated in multi-colored frosting, teetering on the brink of collapse in the background.
"But yeah! Suguru's channel is up right now. First two videos, go check it out! Subscribe, show him some love, give it a like. We had fun hangin' with you, we hope you had fun hangin' with us. And I'll see you guys tomorrow!"
=OoOoO= =OoOoO= =OoOoO= =OoOoO=
UGH! THEY'RE SO CUTE!

How Fama Plays Apart In The Chart Pt 1
* Asteroid Fama can predict how you can blow up online or become famous
* I will also talk about the fame degrees
* Based off MY INTERPRETATION
* I will NOT be doing a full observation but I will touch down on key points.
* Trigger warning: ABUSE, VIOLENCE, ETC.
Lisa (BlackPink)
Before Fame:
Lisa auditioned for YG when she was very young. She was the only one who passed the auditions in Thailand. When she was a trainee, there was a lot of controversy surrounding BlackPink due to the comparisons to 2ne1, being the prettier version of 2ne1, or replacing them.
Observation:
Lisa has her fama in taurus and it rules the throat aka SINGING.The 3 in numerology represents communication, MUSIC, etc.
She has her Pluto at 5 degrees in Sagittarius. The 5 in numerology represents beauty, entertainment, and other things. I really do think Lisa is a pretty girl and Sagittarius could represent the media, traveling, etc. Pluto represents transformations, gains, and other subjects her Sagittarius Pluto at 5 degree explains what she blew up so quickly.
She has her Neptune in Capricorn at 29 degrees. Neptune represents glamour, illusion, fame, etc. The reason why Neptune represents fame because fame is an illusion and it’s something that is out of the ordinary for the average person. The number 29 is a karmic degree and it represents long term fame so being famous is one of her life lessons or met to teach her a lesson. The number 29 in numerology reduces to 11 and 11 represents influence over the mass. Capricorn can represent leadership, legacy, business, etc. What I can conclude is that Lisa’s long term fame comes from being apart of the biggest and most influential Kpop girl group.
She has her north node at 28 degrees in Virgo. Virgo represents the every day life, daily routine, etc. The 28th degree presents being a household name and being very wealthy. Lisa will be a household name, extremely wealthy, and she will be remembered for her hard work.
Final Conclusion:
Blackpink will be the influence/be the standard for other kpop girl groups in the future. A lot of kpop companies will try to recreate their version of Blackpink hence the Capricorn(authority figures), Neptune(illusion, fame, glamour), 29 degrees (Long term fame). Blackpink will forever leave a huge impact on the kpop industry. Idk if there will be another kpop girl group that will be as big as them.
Tumblr media
Cardi B (Rapper)
Before Fame:
She was pole dancer at the club. She started to gain attention online from posting funny/comedic videos. Cardi B started to take rapping seriously when someone encouraged/pushed her to do it.
Observation (Natal):
Cardi has her Saturn in Aquarius at 11 degrees. Saturn represents restrictions, hard work, etc. Aquarius and the 11th degree presents groups of people. The 11h represents hopes/wishes, social media, etc. the 11th degree is prominent in a lot of social media influencers birth charts and Cardi started out as one. Cardi worked hard (Saturn) to achieve her dreams (11h) to be recognized for her creativity by the public (Aquarius). Cardi has caused some commotion on social media (Retrograde Saturn) and inspired other female rappers with her music videos (The 11th degree in Saturn). She has went viral for some unfortunate things (Saturn in 11h retrograde).
Cardi has a Leo Fama at 28 degrees. Fama in Leo represents gaining fame for your creativity, talents, performing, etc. The 28th degree in numerology represents wealth and in astrology it represents being a household name. Cardi b is known for being an entertainer and she has made millions/become wealthy off the rap culture. Cardi has her fama leo conjuncting her chiron. She has been known to throw microphones at people while performing, beefing with other entertainers, and more.
Observations (Persona Chart):
Cardi has her chart ruler Leo in the 1h. This means she was met to be famous for being a performer/household name (28 degrees). The sun (28 degrees) conjunct chiron (28 degrees) represents her controversies following her legacy/being famous for controversy and more.
She has a virgo fama at 25 degrees in 2H. The 2H represents the voice, possession, and more. I noticed her fama is at a mars degree and it represents rapping. A lot of rappers have their mars in their 2H, 3H, 5H, and 10H (natal and persona). She is famous for her rapping voice and known for showing off her luxuries but mainly rapping.
She has her Libra Mars at 5 degrees in the 3H. Libra presents music and also rap stands for rhythm and poetry it was made to talk about the injustices (Libra) and brutality in the black community. The Mars could represent rapping in the fama persona chart. The 3H also represents social media, communication, etc. The 5 degrees represents short term fame in astrology and beauty in numerology. Cardi B used to be online rapping and grinding to make it. She blew up here and there for her short rapping videos. Cardi is known in the media for being a fashionista/fashion icon for her outfit choices.
Conclusion:
Whether we like Cardi or not, she will be household name/famous for a long time. Cardi B was met to be controversial figure and a star. Cardi is controversial for her music videos, her music, etc. Cardi is known for being a fashion icon and out dressing people on the red carpet and more.

It happened when she discovered the producer Evan Rogers, she went on to record demos and get signed by Jay Z. She went from living in poverty to becoming a self-made billionaire.
Observation (Natal):
She has her Aries moon at 11 degrees in 1H. Aries represents aggression, competition, etc. The moon represents emotions and more. The 11th degree represents influence and rules over groups of people. Rihanna is known for expressing her emotions which has made the public gravitate to her. She is also known for her nasty clap backs and emotional outbursts on social media in the early 2010s.

She is a well known business woman with a successful cosmetic line, lingerie line, and more. She has influenced other artists and is a known mogul in music.
She has her Libra fama at 24 degrees in the 7H. Libra represents beauty, relationships, music, etc. the 24th degree in astrology ruled by Pisces represents glamour, artistic expression, illusion, and more. In numerology, the 24 will be reduced to a 6 it represents home/family, friends, time, etc. The 7H represents relationships, partnerships, etc. Rihanna is also known for being beautiful, her glamour, and her music. Rihanna has done a lot of magazine covers and beauty/business sponsorships over the years. She has had a lot of iconic magazine covers and photoshoots we all know and remember. She has more than one famous beauty line that is one of the biggest in the world. The 24th degree reduced to 6 in numerology explains the fact that Rihanna is famous in her home country, she got famous for pursuing music in her home country, her friend introduced her to a well known producer (Evan Rogers), and she devoted her time to music by putting out an album almost every single year which caused a burn out. Again the 6 in numerology represents friends, time, home/family, etc.
Rihanna has her Sagittarius mars at the 28th degree in the 9H. Sagittarius represents travel and traditional media/TV. The 9H represents media like newspapers, news channels, etc. The 11h represents social media in general and groups. Mars represents drive, passion, aggression, etc. The 28th degree (numerology and natal) represents wealth and being a household name. This explains why Rihanna is heavily loved around the world and has made a name for herself.
Observation(Persona):
She has a Virgo Venus 14 degrees and the 1H. In astrology the 14th degree represents the voice, and in numerology it would be reduced to 5(1+4). The 5 in numerology represents beauty and entertainment. This explains why she is known for her music and beauty.
Also, her chart ruler is in the 2H of Libra at 12 degrees. The 12th degree in astrology represents glamour, illusion, and more. In numerology, it reduces to 3 (1+2) and it represents music. She is known for being a musician and having a voice that is different from the ordinary and unique.

This shows why Rihanna is one of the most followed celebs on social media.

random loonatics unleashed hcs bc I like childhood comfort show binging
only elites watched loonatics unleashed—so for the ATOM SIZED community who still gaf abt this gem here’s some random hcs I thought of
ACE BUNNY
[+] confident, determined, loving
[-] stubborn, cynical, impulsive
since he’s like. the most heroic MF known to acmetropolis, overconfidence is his thing. sometimes it goes too far and people have to smack some sense into him (lexi & tech, most likely) and y’all thought duck was cocky… ace is cocky and smart vs duck is cocky and dumb.
i imagine he has some sort of cooling eye drops he puts in after battles or over usage of his laser vision.
may wear glasses if needed.
he defo has underlying anxiety about his leader position since he’s basically in charge of the universe and his teammates he considers his family. (he confides in lexi with this eventually)
on a similar note, since he feels the pressure of being the leader, he suppresses his emotions all the time until lexi finds out and they teach each other to heal :’)))))
as much as he and duck annoy the fuck out of each other, they complement each other in the sense that ace needs comedic relief and duck supplies it (bratty ass little brother things)
anime STANNNN. anything that’s got good lore—He and Tech love sword art online. they hook in rev and slam in the second season. he and slam like attack on titan FOR SURE.
duck gives ace social media tips (because ace loves the attention but doesn’t know SHIT ABT creating a following)
japanese culture fascinates him, so he implements traditions and holidays into the loonatics' activities.
stubborn as fuck, it’s his way or the highway. since zadavia has always put him in charge, it's hard for him not to boss people around when he's unable to help. (as seen in s1 ep6)
since in the show it’s hinted all the loonatics are in university, I have ace being the second oldest child. he’s a natural-born leader, but still can’t take certain things seriously. tech is a good influence on him.
LEXI BUNNY
[+] sweet, empathetic, fiesty
[-] emotional, hot-headed, judgemental
she wears noise-cancelling headphones all the time if not needed by others. the absolute peace and quiet she needs to stay sane, tbh
the amount of radio traffic and minds around her causes headaches and migraines—but also some paranoia and slight insanity since she can’t take all of these mind voices all at once. she receives medicine after years of putting it off/testing due to her super powered dna
^^ tech is the one who finds her crying and screaming and he takes care of her until she tells everyone else.
also to touch on that, tech creates wrist bands that lexi can put on. they are supposed to cancel any brain waves or mind reading for a certain amount of time (but not forever, as she is super powered and it’s still a wip for him). (she also needs her powers to protect planet blanc)
actually hates carrots of any sort (minus carrot cake, she would die w/o it) ace thinks she’s crazy.
“can you read this person’s mind” is her biggest gripe and she hates when anyone asks her to do so
due to her upbringing, she hates mean girls and anyone who isn’t a girls girl gets to have a not so nice convo with her.
she’s very social savvy and is always in the newest trends, she hates how self conscious she is but funnily enough she and duck relate to one another and do have shopping sprees and Amazon hauls for therapy 😭
she’d like tiktok but rarely post lol, and when she does her social media pops off
feminist. "oh girls can't be heroes" "girls shouldn't be doing a man's job" SHUT UR TRAP. she will prove u wrong in 1000 different ways.
most popular of the loonatics—she’s the only female.
her age hc I have is she’s third oldest. which kinda leans into my duck/lexi hcs but that’s in another post
TECH E COYOTE
[+] intelligent, punctual, organized
[-] uptight, perfectionist, egotistical
perfectionist syndrome we LOVE HER
he’s so father type (big brother to all of the loonatics, everyone relies on him imo) Ace is the leader, but Tech is the dad 🤪
since he and mallory (mastermind’s) huge falling out, he has a people pleasing complex. this is because he feels guilty about putting her in jail as she is his protégée but knowing what he did was for the best makes him uneasy. so not only does everything have to be perfect, he has a hard time saying no to prevent conflict.
that being said, when it comes to danger and safety he’s gonna put his foot down.
he absolutely loves tinkering with rev. the two of them share one braincell, though. call them thing one and thing two. they’re smart. but not together 😅
while tech likes…well…technology, I feel like he’d also like forensics too. And watching crime shows with Ace and Rev.
he also has a bit of an ego. mostly bc he’s the creator and manager of all the technology in blanc. (And the universe, maybe. at least blanc and acmetropolis.)
has some sort of side gig going on for sponsorships. i hc that he loves to help create new technology, but he'd also like to provide said ideas to companies, kingdoms, etc. usually has the loonatics branding on it.
when his powers upgraded, he had a bit of trouble controlling it to the point where their new HQ had electrical issues for a month. yay metal but also oopsies I can create electrical currents and it’s a lot
the idea of him being immortal due to his regeneration abilities scares him because his friends will eventually die off and he will remain on his own :( (if i had to think about this, so do u.)
very protective of his stuff, and his family. this is not debatable.
he tries to hide itttt but he loves kids. he likes to surprise them with things he makes and teaches them how to build objects (with lego, of course. ain't no way is he letting any cheeto-dusted fingers come in contact with his shit.)
he’s the oldest loonatic NO QUESTION.
REV RUNNER
[+] energetic, comedic, caring
[-] oblivious, childish, sporadic
he’s so baby boy. a child. I love him so.
adhd brain on TOP
fears rejection, but works on it with lexi helping him out
I think he’d also play league with lexi and ace.
he loves running around fast, obviously but he also likes to stop and enjoy views when he can. (Defo uses the wormholes to escape to sunny places.)
definitely has lists to keep himself organized (and slam, which he is blessed for)
likes mechanical machinery and modifications (hates detailing though, fuck that)
recites the entire bee movie script to tech to annoy him
relies on zadavia for advice frequently. she’s a mother to him and she gives him hugs :))))
knows the best spots in the universe for anything ever, (thanks internal gps)
may the lord bless him bc he loves his brother so so so much that he'd do anything for him. rip is always welcome at hq and they play games/invent shit together :)
would pull pranks on all of the loonatics and he’d get away with it (but duck sees right through him—helps him anyways) since it's shown in season 1, episode 6 that ace and rev like to watch sports/attend games, they'd love other ones that are hockey, basketball and football-oriented. (since this is the future and all, the sport they play in this episode is based on soccer anyway) duck is also part of this too.
the metabolism popped off this man can EAT. since he's already burning it off. He's unlike slam though—he eats at a regular speed due to conversation-making.
youngest loonatic.
SLAM TASMANIAN
[+] strong, resilient, comforting
[+] aggressive, uncontrolled, moody
has a hard time with expressing himself due to the language barrier b/w him and the civilians.
good news tho, rev and duck help him to learn english :DDD they get him to read a ton of things (rev with different books while duck just shows him magazines with him as the street model LMFAO, also trends and stuff.)
has an action figure collection that if touched, a tornado will destroy your room. (he had them before the meteor hit, as a coping mechanism from all the fighting he did)
obvi fave food is pizza, specifically meat lovers
gets into origami to control his mind. lexi loves doing this w him :)
tech and slam love to do weapon tests together bc slam is BEEFY and withstands more injury than people think.
ace and slam train together the most. it helps both of them with tiny/large targets.
desperately wants a cat, a kitten, something cat related… but ace says no all the time bc it serves “as a distraction” from their job (ace is delulu ignore him)
a chef. amazing in the kitchen. cooks all the food for the house. a WHOLESOME MAN. watches the food network LMAO
gives the best hugs.
VERY BROTHER BEAR VIBES, he'll tell someone straight up to NOT FUCK W HIS FAMILY. just DON'T.
third youngest loonatic but acts older
DANGER DUCK
[+] loyal, self-aware, amusing
[-] arrogant, overbearing, hypocritical
u know this man is one of the ✨g w o r l s ✨
he attends drag shows with rev and lexi (DID I STUTTER ??? I think not.)
he doesn’t give a FUCK this man will do what he wants, when he wants, for as long as he wants. (until ace or zadavia gives him shit, whoever comes first) attention-seeker, but rightfully so as he is very much overshadowed by all of his teammates, when in reality he is the strongest and most deadly loonatic. i mean think abt it. he has three powers. the most out of all the loonatics. ace has laser vision. lexi has telepathy. tech can manipulate metallic objects and regenerate. rev has super speed and is a human gps. slam can create storms/tornados. DUCK HAS THE POWER TO CREATE HOT LAVA ORBS (EGGS), MANIPULATE WATER, AND TELEPORT. u see the vision???
it also doesn't help when zadavia is always shitting on him for his character. in her defense, he is a superhero and should be a good influence and in a professional manner, when in his defense, he should at least be praised and acknowledged for the work he puts in...js.
TAKES HIS TRAINING SERIOUSLY EVEN IF HE USES IT AS A VIDEO GAME SIM— HE'S ON IT IN SECONDS.
he does get a bit depressed abt the whole overshadowing thing sometimes. but he's so cocky that he hypes himself up and forgets it ever happened.
HIS APPEARANCE IS EVERYTHING TO HIM, which is why he and lexi hang out a lot when lexi is in need of a break. THEY LOVE THE SALON.
he helps the men eventually with tinder profiles so they can get out there and find romance and shit (but not lexi, since she knows she can get whoever she wants) he's pretty successful at it too.
BOARD GAME CHAMPION. BACK-TO-BACK MAY I ADD. Slam hates it bc he almost clutches the win but duck suddenly has a trick up his sleeve then BAAM. winner winner pizza dinner. his favourite board game is monopoly. (for obvious reasons, mans' needs to be able to manage his money for future investments.)
if he could be on a version of america's next top model, he would.
might be a sarcastic asshole, but does deeply care about his family, and other beings for that matter ( I mean, s2 ep12 ANYONE ??) tweetums was his everything that WAS HIS SON.
trolls people on club penguin with rev, don't ask, I just know.
blogger typa beat. is the social media editor and influencer for the team.
second youngest, but acts like the youngest LMAO
aaaaand that's it for now, i will make separate hc posts for pairings (platonic and romantic) and obvs the loonatics in general, so stay tuned. :)
if u read this far u THE GOAT >:D

Pics: Inspiring HPL.
1. Irvin S. Cobb - American writer, editor, humorist & columnist hailing from Paducah, Kentucky¹.
He was the highest paid staff reporter on the NY World newspaper².
Irvin would write 60+ books & around 300 short stories.
Some of which were adapted into silent movies. And, 2 of his later tales were actually filmed, by the famed John Ford³, during the 1930s!
2. Cobb's "dark side" (horror works) of the otherwise lighthearted comedian & the story in question.
3 & 4. Comedic frontpieces(?) for books by Cobb. The 2nd even boasts an Abraham Lincoln quote!
5. Cover to Cobb's collection of other authors's short horror tales.
6. Inside art from Fishhead's ending...
1913 Addendum -
Intro: Irvin Cobb's infamous short story "Fishhead" is set in the back- wood bayous of the vast Reelfoot Lake⁴.
Plot: The tale concerns the murder of a local outcast freak by "poor whites."
With its surprise Jaws⁵-like ending, this gruesome work reminds readers of an issue of EC comics⁶!
Criticism: Lovecraft lauded Cobb for, "... Carrying on our (own) spectral tradition is the gifted... humorist, I.S. Cobb, whose works... contain some finely (made) weird (tales)."
Of the plot, Howard stated that, "Fish- head" (is) an early achievement, ... banefully effective in its portrayal of (an) unnatural... hybrid idiot & the strange fish of an isolated lake."
Lovecraft further opined, "It is (my firm) belief... that... few short stories of equal merit have been published anywhere (else)..."
Legacy: Cobb's "Fishhead" is seen as a major influence on Lovecraft's own "Shadow Over Innsmouth."
Robert M. Price⁷ noted that, "What (Howard) found revolting was the idea of interracial marriage (&) of different ethnicities mating, (thus) 'polluting' the (white? human?) gene pool."
Fishhead is supposedly "the son of a Negro father & a halfbreed Indian mother." It's never mentioned what her other half was from...
This is the same premise behind HPL's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth."
Except that Lovecraft calls them Deep Ones & has a whole city that's been 'turned'...
More when we get to this story...
Notes:
1. Paducah, as 1 out of 9 U.S. Creative Cities, is a haven for thinkers, artists & creators!
Architectural Digest recognizes this city's historic district as 1 of the most beautiful main streets in America.
There are 20 downtown blocks listed in the National Register of Historic Places!
Weird Shit: Paducah's nickname is "The Atomic City."
This was because it was once the U.S.'s only uranium plant, making atomic bombs for our Defense Department...
2. The NY World newspaper began (in 1860) as a leading voice for the US Democratic Party.
But, once under Joseph Pulitzer, it became a pioneer in "yellow journalism."

Q: How did you come up with your Durge?
Durge was my fourth playthrough. Before that, I had exclusively played Tiefling Barbarian Tavs, so I wanted to shake things up. I initially considered playing a Drow but none of the faces really spoke to me. Then I saw the default feminine High Elf and I just laughed aloud. I loved the idea of playing a conventionally pretty character who actually has these monstrous urges. I was mostly attracted to the potential humor in that extreme contradiction!
The irony of her character led to SO MANY comical moments in the game that it inspired me to start making comics again.
It was a fun creative challenge to reconcile the Dark Urge framework with my choices. I saw comments online saying that for Dark Urge’s story to “make sense” that they should be a big buff Paladin / Barbarian / Assassin / Fighter type. So, I instead made my Durge a High Elf Cleric of Talos! I wanted to explore how these choices would influence my take on the Dark Urge.
I was delightfully surprised by what emerged!
My Durge isn’t the biggest or scariest but she is instead very cunning and creepy. She uses people’s assumptions about her appearance to her advantage, a lot like Puss in Shrek 2, or, like Morticia in the 90s film version of the Addams family. Morticia in particular is flippant and flirty, but when her family is threatened, a switch flips and you realize she knows a lot more than she lets on. I guess I'm just a sucker for characters who subvert expectations in some way - especially to comedic effect!

Made this a text post because it was too hard to write it all out in the comments section! Thanks for the question @anukulee !

Image spreads of all four of the original Tokyo Grand Guignol horror plays in order of serialization. Some of the images are ones that have been online for years. Others are ones that were either unreleased or ones that were only shown in a cropped state, such as the group photo from Lychee. The source of the images is the 28th volume of Yaso magazine, which included an interview with Norimizu Ameya, the founder and lead director of the Tokyo Grand Guignol. The plays in order of appearance are: - Mercury (1984) - Galatia Teito Monogatari (1985) - Lychee Light Club (1985) - Walpurgis (1986) Galatia’s inclusion was a surprise as out of all the plays the TGG had performed, it remains the one with the least visual documentation despite its basis in a popular media franchise and it’s direct influence on the cult film adaption with special effects designed by H.R. Giger. Kyusaku Shimada’s casting in the film version was apparently a result of his appearance in the TGG adaption. I’m unsure if its lack of subsequent representation is either from copyright issues or if Ameya possibly saw the play as being unsatisfactory in retrospect. Very little is known of the production, but from an audio recording that exists on Nico Video it appears that the play was more outwardly comedic in tone. One interesting aspect I noticed is that set decoration included reused set pieces from Mercury’s second act in the science lab, namely the operating table light and the skeletal lizard head that was used during the surgery scene.

Talking more about this chapter because why not
It’s so very clear that this manga is NOT ending this year. Actually impossible unless Takaba magically solves every problem in the next 4 chapters. Gege’s editor already said like it wasn’t ending yet, but entering that phase. Hoping this phase includes more flashbacks because I’m not dropping my intense desire to see more of the Heian era, especially with the culling games and Kenjaku, Sukuna, Uraume, Tengen, Yorozu, etc. Aaaaa I’ll be so sad if nothing comes of it.
This chapter was hilarious. I’m sure there were a ton of references, but it didn’t feel that lost in translation. Kenjaku and the special grade getting the isekai treatment of getting run over (or Yusuke treatment with the other YYH reference) was ridiculous.
I liked how absurd this chapter was, but also how interesting Takaba’s technique is and how it manages to reveal a LOT about both of their characters.
Takaba’s powers involving soul resonance is satisfying, since that reads to me that, while Takaba’s humor is influencing the situation and kenjaku, their interactions are not completely disingenuous. I don’t think Kenjaku is lying at all when they think that this fight is a part of what makes the culling games worth it and imo I can’t see this fight working with any other character. They’re surprisingly compatible. Which shouldn’t be surprising knowing Takaba’s backstory now and all the tidbits we’ve gotten of Kenjaku’s motives and emotions
Sometimes it feels like I’ve read a completely different chapter when I check tags online since I’ve seen only a few people being this up at all. But there was absolutely something between Kenjaku and Takaba, right?? Genuinely, with the compliments, partnership, loneliness, feeling joy/blushing moments?? Look. I know it’s between one of the main villains and an initially gag character. But this is even more than what took people to see yuuta and maki or choso and yuki as a canon pair. But maybe these chapters completely ruined my brain or people disregard it because it’s comedic. Either way, I’m fully expecting Kenjaku to kill Takaba
Doctor and nurse kenjaku outfits were my favorites! It goes with their mad scientist trope of a character. I can’t believe there’s been endless wardrobe changes after I complained that Kenjaku always wears the same geto cosplay.
Already saw people bring this up, but the last page reminded me of the geto and gojo cover. Interested in seeing where this goes

Here's some more info or trivia on the writer and director of the animated cult film 9, Shane Acker and thankfully unlike last time, there's only five here which is perfect for me:
Tumblr media
• The movie that inspired him to become a filmmaker or even an animator is Jason and the Argonauts which he described as "the film that lit the fire in me and I didn't even know it was there to begin with".
• He's also an avid comic book fan, citing the works of Neil Gaiman and Robert Kirkman as some of his favorites and calling Frank Miller's Ronin as "one of my favorite pieces of literature and it's the ones you'd least expect".
• Has gone back and forth on whether or not he should have a Twitter account: "It could actually be fun and open a lot of new possibilities for a lot of people who are fans of the movie and fans of Crusoe but at the same time even I think there are a lot of dumb motherfuckers online that are easily triggered by anything and aren't remotely worth fucking dealing with".
• On his twisted and darkly comedic short film The Hangnail, here's what he had to say on it: "That just came from me wanting to do something that was insanely dark and comedic. I got tired of doing lighter stuff so I took a crack at this horrifying idea that I made funny in how twisted as hell it was".
• On whether or not his cancelled animated film Deep will ever get resurrected: "I doubt it completely 100%. I gave it the best shot and it fell through, again it happens. Some things just aren't meant to be. But I am also somewhat interested in doing live action which obviously would not at all be a big movie but instead a small-scale and atmospheric movie set underwater. I could take some influence from Deep if I want to with that. The ocean's already a fucking scary as shit place I would never go near so why not?".

The Impact of Film Critics on Women in Film and Television
In film and television, the influence of film critics is instrumental in shaping the narratives that permeate our cultural landscape. The portrayal of women and their roles has been a focal point that reflects societal norms and progressive perspectives. Film critics as discerning evaluators of media play a significant role in either reinforcing traditional gender stereotypes or escaping them — contributing to the ongoing evolution of gender representations on our screens.
Film, in a broader historical context, has been a mirror reflecting the prevailing gender norms and expectations of society. In early cinema, women were often relegated to one-dimensional archetypes such as the seductress or the damsel in distress. As British film historian Laura Mulvey points out in her groundbreaking essay “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema,” these portrayals of women in film served to reinforce patriarchal power structures and objectify female characters for the male gaze. Mulvey argues that the construction of films oftentimes, from the camera angle to the narrative structure was inherently designed for the pleasure of a male-centric perspective.
However, as cinema continued to evolve, so did the critical discourse and reception surrounding women’s roles. Film critics emerged as tastemakers, contributing to the discourse surrounding societal expectations and the representation of women. In turn, the critiques of film critics have been a double-edged sword, both perpetuating misogynistic principles and challenging them.
For instance, the critiques of the historical drama “Hidden Figures” (2016) directed by Theodore Melfi contributed to a positive cultural impact. Film critics praised “Hidden Figures” for its ability to shed light on the untold stories of African-American female mathematicians at NASA during the space race. The positive reception from critics not only resonated with audiences but also emphasized the importance of diverse and empowering portrayals of women in historical contexts.
However, the 2016 reboot of “Ghostbusters” directed by Paul Feig featuring an all-female lead cast was not met with that same positive cultural impact. Unfortunately, the film faced a wave of negative reviews from critics rooted in misogyny. Several critics focused more on the gender of the protagonists, insinuating that an all-female cast could not successfully execute a comedic action film. This type of criticism perpetuates harmful stereotypes and undermines the capabilities of the actress involved in the film, showcasing film criticism’s ability to negatively impact the cultural perception of women.
Additionally, film criticism continues to be a male-dominated industry to this day. According to a 2022 report titled ‘Thumbs Down: Film Critics and Gender, and Why It Matters,’ “Across print, radio, television and online outlets, men account for 69% of critics, women account for 31%...” These statistics demonstrate the necessity of film criticism to align with the representation of women on the screens. The statistics highlight the importance of a more inclusive critical cultural landscape beyond predominantly male perspectives.

hi i was curious what fic you were refering to in your minato/akechi art :>??
It's a fic i've been writing on and off for a year now but i havent posted it anywhere yet haha.... unless?
In summary: It's about Akechi finding new work at a company called R.E.I (reliable, experienced, innovative) where Minato is the CEO (and widower) with a child Akechi comes to know as Rei (yep Minato named the company after his daughter). The fic focuses on all 3 influencing each other and helping each other cope/grow from their traumas but is also my biggest excuse to write cute scenes where Akechi gets to have an adopted daughter and be the dad he never got to be (he's terrible at it). If you're wondering "why would Minato hire Akechi" then don't worry. He has a very good reason. Minato hired Akechi because Akechi gave him shitty customer service and Minato took one look at him and said "I can adjust his attitude." now Akechi works for Minato bc he's an idiot. Most the fic is also me writing them comedically stupid and sad and very stupid. Oh, and I guess they kiss maybe. But really it's about broken people building a family w/o knowing. I made the fic as a joke and that's why it can't be named anything other than "Is it wrong to hit on my boss?" I've made a ton of art for it (some which I guess i've already posted alluding to the fic). I did make a cover sketch for it tho! There's a bunch of foreshadowing in the items on display (but it's too sketchy to make out I'm sure).
Tumblr media
The 100k part of this fic is already up on patreon but I'm writing/editing the other 100K. So like, uh... 200+ pages of text and 29 chapters so far. In theory, the fic is already finished/has an ending, but I just need to fill in the gaps and tie plot points together.
If you're interested, I'll add the prelude/first chapter below the cut lmfao. It pretty much sets up the premise as tightly as possible in under 2K words. It has not been edited at all so take this abhorrently constructed first draft with no shame. You can judge my noodle words all you want but remember if you say a mean thing I will die.
Title: Is it wrong to hit on my boss?
Pair: Minake
Ch 1: That's not how this was supposed to go.
10 AM on the dot, to no one's surprise, he was flawlessly punctual as usual. Today was too important for missteps, and Akechi had carefully calculated each and every word he was going to use to land this job opportunity with one of Japan's biggest corporations in web development and online advertisement. Having worked at a low paying job for the most part (one with a boss that relentlessly attacked him and tried to convince him that he would amount to nothing, no less) didn’t prepare him for the call he received from R.E.I's founder about a new job opportunity.
Cocky with confidence, he quit his job before the interview.
After all, if this founder somehow went out of his way to request him, he must have done so with good reason.
With his hair tied back neatly into a ponytail and his shirt tucked beneath a more-than-a-little expensive looking business suit, he walked into the lobby, checked in, and got told to take the elevator up to the 3rd floor. He cocked his head curiously at the attendant before turning his gaze towards the elevator. Next to the elevator was a fire extinguisher for emergencies, and a metal plate outlining over 100 floors for the building. Naturally, there had to be some mistake. Floor 1 was considered the lobby, floor 2 was a storage for supplies and spare parts, and floor 3 was where their call center started. Their web developers were a fair bit higher up in the company, which made his directions only more confusing. What was a web developer supposed to do at a call center? While the thought of not having to fake a smile over the phone was comforting, the very image of having to do customer support 7 hours a day for the rest of his life put the fear of God in him.
"Pardon my rudeness, but there m-" Must be some mistake. The old lady at the counter was one step ahead of him and delivered her message with a sharp tone that left Akechi speechless.
"The founder's office is on the third floor," she interrupted her sentence with a huff, "-treat yourself to the coffee upstairs, you're gonna need it." and punctuated it with a dismissive wave of her hand. If more people hadn't entered the building and tried to take care of their own business, Akechi would have asked her to elaborate. But since he now for sure knew he was going to meet the founder, he decided not to make a scene.
"I… see. Thank you for the offer, but I must decline. I'm sure everything will go smoothly." But if they put him in a call center to provide customer support around the clock he was prepared to personally wire that black coffee maker into a homemade bomb and take down the whole building with him. While that thought crossed his mind, he smiled politely at the woman and took the elevator ride up.
Never in his life had he been so confused by a layout. He was aware of the building's size, but this was beyond ridiculous. The hallways almost looked like a maze, with paintings scribbled from wall to wall. Upon closer inspection, they looked like kids drawings. Either this was part of some PR stunt, or the founder was really into bright neon colors. If Akechi didn't hear the man on the other line himself and came here looking for a job, he'd expect to find a kindergarten at the other side of the many doors down the hall. His confidence was dwindling more and more with each step.
Once he reached the door he assumed would take him into the workplace where the founder was seated, he grasped at the handle only to find it locked. He blinked, and twisted the doorknob again, hoping it would open the door. When it didn't, he pulled a little harder until he heard a click from the other side, and noticed that the plate beneath the handle had the word "push" written in caps. Without thinking, he put far too much swing into his movement, and ended up smacking the poor sap on the other side that kindly unlocked the door for him, and the man's coffee poured right onto his suit and onto the floor in a loud mess.
"Ah, sorry!" He would have stayed and apologized properly if he wasn't at risk of running late. "If you give me a minute, I'll be right back and help you clean up!" and he was gone. He could have stayed and helped but chose to prioritize the meeting. In the end, that guy was out one cup of coffee and still had a stable income, whereas missing out on this interview might cost Akechi not only his career, but his livelihood. If this went south, he could wind up homeless. Unless he begged for his old job back.
No, the chill of winter would be less humiliating than going back on his hands and knees to the boss that not only demeaned him, but continuously plagiarized his work for his own benefit.
"Hewoo," In the midst of his early mid-twenties crisis, a soft voice spoke to him, but the only people he spotted were already head-deep in work. Another faint cry, this one, a bit more shy.
"Heo…" he turned his head down, and spotted a tiny girl hiding beneath a desk with her fist against her lips and her knees up to her chest. She looked about four years old, short curly hair with a clip-on to keep her bangs out of her eyes. Really, if she hadn't called out to him, he never would have spotted her in those shadows. He stared at her stupidly before turning his head up and asking if anyone brought their daughter to work. The girl shushed him, and got his attention once again.
"M, hidin…"
"Ah," It was too early for a break, but he supposed someone might have taken some time off to call a responsible adult to come pick up their child from work. Still, he couldn't help but smile and crouch next to her, putting one finger over his lips with a whisper. "It's ok, I won't tell anyone." The little girl smiled so wide she was practically squinting.
"Who r u…" He cocked his head slightly. Did she know most of the people on this floor? She spoke as if she knew he was a stranger. He shrugged it off. That can't be right. Must have been childish curiosity.
"I'm Akechi Goro, and you?"
"Ake...ak...e...Aket…" She struggled and fumbled over her words, before she furrowed her brows with confidence and looked upset she couldn't yet pronounce his name.
"Gowo." He couldn't hold back a smile, and the little girl, now forgetting she's supposed to be hiding, shouts at him.
"Don't laff! That's mean!"
"Sorry!" His words said sorry, but his smile told her differently. At least, until his phone began beeping. It was now exactly 10 am.
"Sh-!" Too much in a hurry, he rushed to stand up quickly, and banged the back of his head against the table. He fell to his knees again, pushed down by the tabletop, and grabbed the back of his neck. The little girl, to no fault of her own, laughed at him without a shred of sympathy. Before he could get up on his feet, an arm patted him on the back.
"Hey, you ok?" He couldn't tell with his eyes closed, but the little girl mimicked the man's movements and reached her tiny hand out to pat Akechi's knee as if to comfort him. Before he could respond, he heard the man say "There you are!" followed by a tiny high pitched scream that honest to God was only giving Akechi a headache.
Still better than his old job, despite the abuse and trauma he's had to endure thus far.
When he opened his eyes, he saw the man that he accidentally slammed into squishing the little girl's cheeks, possibly as punishment.
"What did I tell you? You can't win."
"Mmmrmmmrrrr"
"Do you give up?" The child stubbornly stared him in the eye and only repeated her mumbling louder. The man sighed, but with the hint of a smile.
"Alright, go hide again." The joy in that little girl's eyes could part the skies on a cloudy day. She beamed and quickly ran off to hide elsewhere while the man covered his eyes and began counting. As soon as she was gone and he no longer heard the tip tap of feet, he got up and extended his hand towards Akechi.
"You look lost. Do you need any help?" This was humiliating. A kid laughing at him, he could handle, but a future coworker extending him his aid this early in their partnership was shameful. Especially since this was the same guy he left high and dry just moments ago.
"No, no, I'll be alr-" His voice was now much less sympathetic.
"Just take my hand." So much for debate. He didn't appreciate how everyone in this company cut him off mid-sentence, but took the other man's hand to get back up on his feet. As soon as he did, he got looked over rather thoroughly, a little too intensely to his liking.
"Doesn't look like you're bleeding, but if you're feeling dizzy, there's a nurse just two doors down to the left. She can examine you in case you've suffered any severe damage." His concern was flattering but unnecessary and sadly a waste of time.
"Haha, no worries. Actually... I need to get to the founder's office. Do you know where that is?"
"Yes, but I wouldn't worry about t- Rei, don't climb the bookshelf! Junpei, will you-"
"Aye, aye, boss! Come here you trouble bunny! How about you hop hop into bed and take a long looong nap? Man, uncle Junpei could use one too. I'll show you how it's done, like a pro!"
"Iori, sleep on the job and you're fired."
"Come on Philei, your dad is scary when he's talking to people that are not you!"
So much happened in the span of just a couple of seconds.
"...Rei?" He felt his blood run cold. "Her name is… Rei?" The man, somewhat confused that he was still standing there with a dumb look on his face, spoke as if this was basic knowledge Akechi should have known before stepping into the building.
"Of course, that's my daughter," he holds out his hand again, this time, expecting Akechi to shake it. "-and I'm the founder, Minato Arisato. And you are?"
Absolutely screwed.

The Role of Memes in Politics
What is a meme? According to Galipeau (2022), a meme is essentially an intertextual mashup of a screenshot, GIF, or image from pop culture, finished with some text. Memes have evolved from being a mainstay of sorts on social platforms such as 4chan to being an essential and necessary component of visual communication in the realm of political debate and conflict in the past few years (Mortensen & Neumayer 2021). If you ask me, memes can be seen as the sambal to the nasi lemak that is politics; they give it a certain flavour and add some spice to it. However, this raises the question: do memes — as popular as they are in politics, Malaysian or not — help people to have a better grasp on their local political scene?
Tumblr media
The way I see it, memes are able to achieve this due to certain attributes that they possess. For one, memes are widely available and simple to post on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter/X, and Instagram, which makes them a powerful tool for capturing the attention of a wider audience, in particular the younger generation. The results of a study by Mihailidis (2020) indicate that the participants of said study (mainly comprised of young people) were all familiar with memes and frequently used them in their online communication. Some memes also have the potential and ability to simplify complicated political topics so that a wider range of individuals can understand and relate to them. This aligns with how more and more research suggest that memes can have an influence on political communication at local and national levels (Mihailidis 2020), which goes to show just how influential memes can be in regards to politics.
instagram
Besides that, memes provide an avenue of sorts for people to exercise free speech. Mortensen & Neumayer (2021) suggest that it is important to consider memes as a continuation of political humour such as comics and/or cartoons, which are commonly rife with satire, comedy, and parody. Bulatovic (2019) reiterates this by pointing out that politics has always been filled with humour and satire, but ever since the Internet's inception, everyone has had the opportunity to express their opinions in a comedic and sarcastic manner, one way or another. What differentiates memes from the previous forms of political humour is that they are more remixable in terms of their context and substance, and are produced by anonymous groups of media users as a component of participatory digital culture (Mortensen & Neumayer 2021). In a hilarious and memorable fashion, they can draw attention to political oddities, contradictions, and hypocrisy. Through this, memes can serve to check on political authority and allow people to express their displeasure with the political system or particular politicians and political parties (Bulatovic 2019).
Tumblr media
In addition, politics can occasionally benefit from the strategic usage of memes. Memes can function as effective rhetorical tools in political disputes, in which political authority and hierarchy are either affirmed, contested, or challenged, as stated by Mortensen & Neumayer (2021). Through widespread replication, memes have been turned into a potent weapon for waging political conflict with adversaries in a “memetic warfare” of sorts (Bulatovic 2019). Similarly, a study by Galipeau (2022) demonstrates that memes can have an impact on a key factor that voters use to make their decisions during a political campaign. This can result in memes being created and distributed by politicians and political parties in an effort to sway public opinion, discredit their rivals, or reinforce their own message in an effort to win over public support.
instagram
Now, with all that’s been said, does it make memes a worthwhile tool in understanding politics, even in a Malaysian context? Sure, they have the ability to make politics more relatable to the masses, but to a certain extent. In my opinion, it takes a more comprehensive approach to properly comprehend politics as a whole. Memes may be a helpful and entertaining method to engage in political discussion, but they should be viewed as a tool for deconstructing, criticising, or mocking politics, rather than as a complete source of political knowledge and information. As stated by Edwards (2021), there is every reason to expect that memes will continue to influence political debates and communities in the near future, as they have evolved into constitutive sources of political speech, for better or worse.

Obscure Animation Subject #43: Sazae-san
Originally posted on Twitter on April 3, 2023.
So, um… this is actually the longest-running animated series of all time! Don’t believe me, please read.
Based on the 1946-1974 gag manga by Machiko Hasegawa, the show is produced by Eiken (formerly TCJ until 1972) and airs on Fuji TV.
It premiered on the network on October 5, 1969, with a timeslot of Sundays at 6:30 PM, with each episode containing 3 7-minute segments, and it continues airing to this day. The show holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running animated television series in 2013.
The show is about Sazae, a very liberated woman, with many of the early plotlines revolving around Sazae bossing around her husband, to the consternation of her neighbors, who believed that a man should be the head of his household. Later, Sazae became a feminist.
Not in the modern American style, and was involved in many comical situations regarding her affiliation with her local women's lib group. Despite the topical nature of the series, the core of the stories revolved around a large family dynamic, presented in a lighthearted fashion.
In current culture, the popular Sazae-san anime is frequently viewed as a nostalgic representation of traditional Japanese society, since it represents a simpler time before many of the changes brought by modern technology. Its social themes are evocative of a nostalgic era.
And its a no-brainer that the show lasted this long for how much of a nostalgic feel it has. Usually, the stories are based on the ones in the manga like most anime, but due to the limited number of strips, a new anime-original story is created every few years.
In addition, the unique culture and events in a typical Japanese household, including the four seasons, will always be reflected in the story.
At the start of the anime, it was a slapstick comedy, but within a year it had become more slice-of-life. However, its still comedic.
For this reason, it is often described as a "national anime" in Japan and is regarded as a symbol of "universality" and "permanence". Whenever there is a change, there is always a great deal of media coverage, and the anime retains a strong influence on the public.
In recent years, due to the influence of its unchanging style, it is sometimes criticized as "anachronistic" or "this anime depicts the 20th century," such as the absence of smartphones and convenience stores in the work even though the period setting is the present day.
In response to this comment, the staff said, "The appeal of this anime is that it depicts scenes of everyday life and universal relationships that can be found in any family. Therefore, we have no plans in the future to incorporate events or items that would change them."
However, some of the phenomena, such as smoking and corporal punishment, which have come to be considered inappropriate due to changing times, have been removed or otherwise addressed. The anime is not well known outside of Japan, as it has never been developed globally.
However, in 2019, the producers stated in a conversation that they hope to be able to expand globally in the future. Otherwise, due to wishes and right-holders, most of the show is considered lost media with only a small percentage of episodes have surfaced online.
As of 2023, only Midori Katō, who plays Sazae, has never been changed. Katō was recognized by Guinness World Records in 2019 as the "Longest career as a voice actor for the same character of an animated TV series". Very impressive that she’s been voicing for so long.
The opening is an introduction to the places that Sazae has traveled and visited throughout Japan since 1974. This video changes every three months. This has come to be viewed by cities as a "cost-effective means of promoting tourism" and Sazae is proud of promoting.
From the start of the series until October 1991, Sazae ended each episode by tossing a bean or rice cake in the air and catching it in her mouth. It was replaced after doctors raised concerns that children may try to imitate Sazae and potentially choke on food.
Since November 1991, after the closing credits and the next episode previews, each show has ended with a janken match between Sazae and the viewers at home, in which Sazae holds up a sign representing one of the appropriate hand gestures. This made the closings more fun.
The anime series was originally sponsored solely by Toshiba. Later, in 1998, the program expanded to other sponsors, but the unity between Toshiba and Sazae-san remained strong. So when Toshiba withdrew its sponsorship due to poor management, it was big news.
Sazae-san was the last animated television series to use traditional cel animation, although as of April 2009, the opening credits were digital. The series finally switched to digital ink-and-paint animation in 2015. The opening and ending themes are by Yuko Uno.
There have been two hiatuses: the first, for about a month beginning in February 1975, due to the 1970s energy crisis; the second, for about a month beginning in May 2020, due to COVID-19. Programming during these periods was handled by rebroadcasting past productions.
In Japan, there is a term called "Sazae-san syndrome" (サザエさん症候群, Sazae-san shōkōgun), which refers to a depressed mood on Sunday night after an episode has finished on television, reminding people that the weekend is coming to an end, mainly children who hate school.
Regardless if it has done good or bad, Sazae-san is one most historical and important animated shows ever created, and it developed a cult following internationally. While most episodes are lost, the ones found give us an insight to the show and how popular it’s become in Japan.

Nimona Spoiler-Filled Review [part 2]
Continued from part 1
youtube
There is no doubt that the material work conditions for writers influences how "good" or "bad" a work is. High-quality and well-edited work is only possible when studios value creative labor and give writers enough security and time to perform that labor. The studios are often standing in the way between the audience and the vibrant art. As I noted in my last review, online jerks who hated High Guardian Spice said it was "bad". These claims were faulty. The real reason should be obvious: the horrendous working conditions at Crunchyroll.
The Animation Guild, also known as IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) Local 839, which represents animators in Canada and the U.S., does not have talks for a new contract until 2024. The results of the present strikes by writers and actors will likely impact the contract and shape the demands that the guild makes of studios. There are reports that WGA East will add animation writers to their union next year. It could cause the relationship between the WGA and animation writers to cool from previous "bad blood" which dates back to a "turf war" in the 1970s between the Guild and WGA.
The success of this film proves that those who claim that a film needs to "tone down" its queer themes are wrong. The same goes for anti-establishment films. Arcane is another example of a series which suggests that institutions that "try to hide and kill people" should be torn down. At the same time, there is a contradiction of liberals and progressives within Hollywood producing "revolutionary queer happy ending stories" but not doing anything to make this happen in reality.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the forty-second article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on July 31, 2023.
On the other hand, the series differs in many ways from the comic, no matter how queer the cast is. The webcomic, which later became a graphic novel, depicts mental institutions as agents of oppression which "engage in structural violence." It does this even better than series like Disenchantment. There's also a focus on disability, as Ballister, in the comic, has a prosthetic arm. This is replicated in the film, although his prosthetic arm comes about in a different way.
The film, unlike the comic, is comedic in the first part, then more dramatic. The comic had a different tone. Even so, both are metaphors for transness and have positive LGBTQ representation. It is a milestone for Western animation. Disney clearly missed an opportunity by turning down (and cancelling) the film before its revival.
Nimona does much more than the family-friendly animated film, The Mitchells vs. the Machines. The latter was praised for putting a queer character, Katie Mitchell (voiced by Abbi Jacobson) at the center. Nimona has more openly queer characters, specifically Ballister and Goldenloin, who are both gay. As for Nimona, her character is open to interpretation, including an implied gay relationship with Gloreth before she betrayed Nimona.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines had unnecessary hype for a sci-fi comedy romp. It centered on White family, has extraordinarily little rewatch value, and only hints at Katie's queerness. Her girlfriend is shown in almost a blink-and-you-miss-it moment. Film director Phil Lord was criticized for creating a crunch environment for animators working on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Possibly, work conditions for animators on The Mitchells vs. the Machines were the same.
Nimona avoids the issues with the aforementioned film, to its betterment. Public Enemy famously sang, in their 1988 hip-hop single, to not believe the hype. For Nimona, it lives up to the hype in many ways. In contrast, The Mitchells vs. the Machines falls flat, stitching together "hundred familiar film plots", has inconsistent themes, and is very nostalgic.
It is worth noting the importance of pink as a color in Nimona. Stevenson described the color pink as Nimona's way of expressing her nonconformity and refusal to act according to "anybody else’s standards". Instead, she will be unequivocally herself. This contrasts for how pink is portrayed in Steven Universe. That series already subverts toxic masculinity and normalizes trauma. Series creator Rebecca Sugar noted that Revolutionary Girl Utena influenced her. As Peter Tedesco wrote, Steven's choice of a pink shirt with a big star and pink flip-flops goes against "traditional masculinity", and exudes femininity. His pink shield or oft-crying do the same. As such, Nimona and Steven Universe subvert the "traditional" meaning of pink, each in their own way.
Ultimately, Nimona has a strong rewatch value, even though it differs from the webcomic which has a focus on secret documents and bureaucracy. The latter wasn't a major theme in this film. While this film, in terms of themes, somewhat connects to She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, the same may be true for future productions by Stevenson. The latter includes "two book series of novels" and the animated adaptation of Lumberjanes (hopefully coming out in 2024).
Overall, I recommend this film. Nimona is currently streaming on Netflix.
