KENZIE YOU’RE RAD THANKS SORRY THIS TOOK ME SO LONG. I’m gonna talk about chapter 24 of Blackbird, and also some experiences of mine that informed it, and I’m putting a blanket trigger warning at the beginning of this for mentions of death, cancer, and hospice. Okay? Okay. Be careful, peeps, don’t force yourselves to read if you’re sensitive rn or in general. It’s okay.

So, chapter 24. Tim is staying awake longer. He’s starting to drink broth and smoothies, he’s feeling more like a person, he’s on a cannula instead of a mask, he can talk, he’s starting to heal. GO TIM!!!!!

But, dun dun dun, his Mom isn’t doing well at all. She’s been on hospice, we knew that, but now it’s getting to be the end. She’s slipped unconscious and isn’t going to wake up again. Tim won’t get to have a last conversation. But they do want to get him over there to say goodbye. It’s not the best idea in the world, and they wouldn’t do it for like, any other reason, but this is his mom, and she’s dying, and this can’t be put off. But I want to talk about how I made this happen--not the technical aspects, but the human. Because it’s important.

Death is part of life. Dying happens a lot, we’re all going to die, and we can be at peace with that or terrified of it and it just doesn’t matter. We don’t get a choice. It’s not really our own deaths that suck though, because one day it’ll happen and then it’ll be over. There will be some kind of afterlife or there won’t, our bodies will become part of the cycle of nature and planet and star formation again, and our actions from life will continue having rippling snowball effects for decades and centuries to come because everyone impacts everyone else in a million small and large ways.

What’s godawful is losing people. It’s not so hard to be the person who died. It’s hard to be the people left behind.

And it’s very, VERY hard to be the person who has to watch. There’s a mercy to sudden deaths, in my opinion, the accidents, the really sudden declines that happen when you’ve just run home from the ICU to get a shower, things like that. I know some people want to be with people in their last moments, because it matters and it’s meaningful and of COURSE no one wants to be alone when they die. But not everyone is okay with being there, and that’s something that I think is really important for all families and friends to remember. People are pressured to be there, but not everyone should. It’s a case-by-case basis. There are good healthy ways to handle death, and there are unhealthy ways to handle death. No one should ever be forced into being around more or doing more than they can handle.

Death can be a really dignified, beautiful passing on hospice, and there are these just--these fucking amazing, beautiful, unbelievable humans who make it their life’s worth to make that happen. Whether going to individual situations, or running hospice homes for terminally ill children or elderly or cancer patients or whatever, they’re just...they’re amazing. I can’t believe they’re able to do what they do every year. They’re very special people, bringing peace and joy and bittersweet goodbyes and dignified death and lots and lots and LOTS of support to families going through it. That’s wonderful.

I had some fairly run-of-the-mill relative deaths that were pretty middle-of-the-road in terms of awfulness vs. okayness, because while they weren’t handled awesomely they were fairly sudden. That just helped everything--there wasn’t much chance to watch a long decline, or have family fighting, etc. etc.

But my aunt had a long death. She had stomach cancer. It took a couple years. She was a ghost of herself by the end, and my mom didn’t process much, and she doesn’t remember this, but I was one of my Grandma’s main caregivers back then, my Grandma with Diabetes and stuff and dementia. Her short term memory was shot. And my mom physically couldn’t be a caregiver, and she wanted to escape the situation as badly as I did, but she COULD because she WASN’T, so she’d go to other rooms, etc.

I got woken up suddenly to be told my aunt had died. No one checked on me, I was checking on my mom, because she didn’t even know what to say or think or do, except to tell me that I had to tell grandma.

So I got dressed. I didn’t get to think about it. My mom stayed in her room for a couple hours. I woke up my grandmother and sat with her in her wet bed before assisting her shuffle to the shower where I’d spend ten minutes convincing her body wash was a kind of soap, even if it’s not a bar, i’m not trying to trick her, and please let me wash her, and I sat and told her that her oldest child had died. And I had to keep telling her that all day, while almost no one was around, while my mom couldn’t do it, while I was nineteen or twenty or so and completely out of my depth.

Bruce wakes Tim up gently. He tells him gently. He touches him. He stays with Tim until he has to leave, he makes sure Tim has Alfred and Clark when it’s not him there. Everything is gentle and as calm as possible. Bruce keeps touching him on and off, empathizing with him, not pushing, but there. Just there. It’s lousy, but it’s as okay as it can get.

And Tim goes and watches his mom die.

Should Tim be there? Already traumatized Tim, in a really stressful situation, watching someone in a coma on hospice in the stage of active death, who looks physically painful to see, etc. etc.? Maybe not. Maybe. It’s a hard judgement call. But Tim decided to be there, and Bruce would help him leave if he asked. And this is Tim’s mom, too, so it’s a little more important to be there than for a random relative. It’s hard to make these kinds of decisions, because even when you know a kid well, it doesn’t make you magically sure of what they can and can’t handle when things get stressful. At the end of the day, though, Tim’s guilt and stress and everything would be a lot worse if he hadn’t gone for at least part of the time. In this case, they made the right call.

And still Bruce is with him. He doesn’t leave. He’s a stable presence in a really godawful time, and I accidentally triggered myself while writing this chapter, because while my Grandma didn’t die of cancer as far as we know, she did have a really. really. long decline. It was horrible, and it was awful, and she was like a skeleton, and I don’t ever want to see that again, and I was not given a choice about existing in this house while it happened or helping when necessary, and I didn’t get a choice about being in the room when she spent all day dying. In that case, I WASN’T in a place to handle it. But I’ve thought a lot about how to write a blend of a situation into the story where it would have that kind of death but be less awful. How do you make something you’re not ready for and that’s painful to watch an experience that’s just unhappy rather than horrific?

You give the person a rock. Bruce. You keep things calm. I brought in details that were important, the stillness, the endless waiting, the jumpiness about every single change in sounds, the death rattle--but I gave aspects of control. Tim has backup, he’s keeping a grip on himself just barely, and he’s fulfilling his duty as a son without being bitter about it. Just sad. Really, really sad. He doesn’t label it as sad, because it’s buried under a lot of Stress and Angry and Scared, but it’s there. And when it happens, and Jack is getting a little overwhelming, and Tim is starting to have issues?

Bruce steps in. Bruce IS the adult in this situation, not just legally but by action. He starts to manage Tim without missing a beat. And he gets him out of there pretty quickly. He’s empathetic towards Jack, he’s a pillar of calm in general, and he and the others don’t leave Tim alone even when Tim is stubbornly fighting them in the car. AND with the kaddish--I know Tim doesn’t get to finish it in this particular night, but he tries to--Bruce doesn’t push or restrict Tim from doing what he feels like doing to grieve. He expresses his concern for Tim’s health, asking him to wait, but offers himself as the one to say it instead, for Tim’s peace of mind. He doesn’t tell Tim his way of grieving is wrong, and NO one pushes Tim to do anything specific, or to touch or kiss his mother, or to talk about it, or to NOT talk about it. They’re there, they’re supporting, they’re listening if he wants, and they’re just not leaving him alone.

Because that’s the thing I’ve learned from the number of deaths in our family so far. There aren’t words that help. That doesn’t matter. It’s being there that does. The day of, the day after, weeks after, sometimes even months after. It’s being around and willing to listen or step in and help when someone’s grieving, but not pushing them to. Just being there. And that’s what the Waynes do for Tim in this chapter. It’s a lousy death, from a really lousy illness, but it goes about as well for Tim as it could have gone. He’s got a family looking out for him who know what it’s like, except for Cass, at least to some extent, and while it doesn’t make the situation better, it sure keeps it from being any worse.

People deserve the best death they can get in their particular circumstance, and family and friends deserve the ability and freedom to participate and grieve in their own ways and own time. I know this isn’t a perfect world. But I’m really happy at the end of the day with the way I was able to write Janet’s death in this chapter, because I think it was balanced as well as it ever could be, and I don’t think I would have been able to write that even a few months ago and done it justice. It’s easy to swing too far towards cheapening it or getting too intense, and I really worked to avoid both ends of the spectrum here.

Janet may not have been a good mom, but she deserved as good a death as she could be allowed. And Tim deserved to not be walking through it alone. So I gave them that, and I’m happy, and I hope that--not that those scenes can be a guide for anyone, but that maybe they can help people feel a little understood, and a little less alone when dealing with the death of someone they love. We all deserve that much.

Sorry this got so long and like...dark. But I have a lot of feelings about that chapter. Thanks for letting me talk about it. And if you want something more cheerful, I’ll absolutely talk about Hoodie On or something instead, too haha!

I’m also a feminist, pro marriage equality, pro choice, pro creation care/caring for the environment, I believe in science, I don’t believe in hell, and I hate violence. So...do with all that what you will.

21. Have you ever been to the hospital? Yes, I go there a lot with my work.

22. Have you ever got in trouble with the law? I literally sweat when a cop car passes me and I’m a goody two shoes, so no! Haha

23. How is life? Its alright. I am really tired today which always affects my mood negatively. And I just watched Infinity War last night so I’m depressed, y’all. (edit: can you tell I started this over a week ago LOL)

26. Have you ever been famous? Once I met the guy who won Canadian Idol and my local grocery store put up a picture of us together in the store and had it up for years. Haha!

They have no privacy and our world thinks they owe us everything and really they owe us nothing so I would never ever want to be famous. I like being able to look like crap daily and not have it in magazines.

28. What type of music do you like? I like a wide variety of music, the only music I don’t like, really, is misogynistic rap and country. I am a choral and accapella music nerd, I love it so much.

88. Are you depressed about anything? I feel like I’m sleep walking through my life sometimes, and depression takes away my ability to care enough to be motivated to do anything about it. I swear apathy is the worst side effect of depression for me!

89. Do you like your age? It is honestly the best. I love being 30! I care less about the insecurities that consumed my life in my early 20s. I have more body confidence . I’m more secure financially than I’ve been at any point in my life. And I still feel youngish. Haha.

90. What makes you angry? White privilege, misogyny, Canadian and American politics, Christian people who don’t act loving and don’t seem bothered by it, when people don’t return their shopping carts in parking lots, when people can help others but don’t, cancer, narcissists.

91. Do you like your own name? I have always loved my name. I only know one other person with my name who spells it like me!

93. Do you want a boy or a girl for a child? I have a boy, and if I ever get the opportunity to have another kid I kinda hope its a girl. I’m really close with my mom so I always imagined having a daughter to hopefully be close with too. My son is a mini me in every way, though.

94. What talents do you have? I have a semi-photographic memory (so helpful for studying), I learn song lyrics super fast, I can sing any song for you in the correct key it was recorded in (what would you call that? pitch memorization?)

95. Sun or moon? I love sitting in a sunbeam like a cat. But the moon is super comforting to me. Both.
