Orioles passage South

We awoke to thick fog at 4am in Craighouse yesterday morning, barely able to see the lights marking the exit of the bay. Never the less, it was time for us to head south and so off we went, lights on and into radar watch. We picked up the first lighthouse on radar and altered course towards the mull of kintyre. It was eerily dark, a tough start for those whose first night watch it was. As we progressed south an object was picked up on the radar and then eventually spotted by the crew as it came into view. A small fishing vessel past our port side, no AIS and a confirmation if ever needed not to rely on AIS! Still in the murky fog but now lightening as dawn broke we were accompanied by dolphins on the bow. A sign we were heading the right direction we thought. We arrived at the mull of kintyre in perfect time to pick up the first of the tide and sped round the headland just 0.5nm offshore but absolutely no sign of it other than the big yellow blob on the radar. Watch changes came and went, the fog stayed however. So we continued with our real life fog and radar training, passing another yacht closer than I think they thought! Eventually as we approached the mull of Galloway, the SW tip of Scotland, the fog lifted and we were treated to a magical passage of the Irish Sea. Flat as it gets and our navigators Dave and Alan had worked out the tide perfectly we slipped west of the Isle of Man having barely had any stream against us. Next up was Julie and Wendy on the nav and they had us needing to be at saint davids head on SW wales by 1600 on Tuesday. Before then we still had a few tidal gates and yet more fog to contend with. Eventually the wind materialised and we motor sailed mainly for the next 12 hours or so with a short period of sailing only for the wind to drop again. With the tide window in mind we pushed on to the Welsh coast and were welcomed by yet more dolphins, a large pod who played with us for 20mins or so. The sun had finally appeared as the wind finally topped 10kts and we were able to push on under sail alone. We sailed south with the tide and a now lovely 14kts of breeze and tacked round the rocky headlands of SW wales swapping between reefs 2 and 1 as the wind changed from force 4 to 5 and back again more times than we could count!. It was a stunning sail and really felt like the last epic portion of our journey south as the lighthouses on the rocks towered above us. As we approached Milford haven, we rolled away our headsail and Wendy and Julie navigated us into the estuary at Milford haven (no mean feat in the dark!) and the 6nm up stream to the marina where we slipped straight through the lock and onto our berth. Martin and Julie finished dinner and we sat down for a late supper listening to our new CD picked up from the aforementioned festival and enjoyed tales of our passage.
