A year ago today, 46-year-old George Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis as then–police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for 9 minutes and 29 seconds. As bystanders begged Chauvin to get up, a teenage girl walking by had the presence of mind to video what was happening. Thanks to that girl, Darnella Frazier, we all could hear Floyd telling Chauvin, “I can’t breathe.”

Floyd’s murder sparked more than 4700 protests across the nation that popularized both the idea that policing must be reformed and the concept that American systems, starting with law enforcement and moving to include housing, healthcare, education, and so on, are racially biased. In the past fourteen months, support for the Black Lives Matter movement among white people has jumped 5%, fueled mostly by younger people.

And yet, the rate of deaths at the hands of law enforcement officials has not changed, and Black people are three times more likely than white people to die at the hands of law enforcement even though they are 1.3 times more likely to be unarmed.

In April, a jury convicted Chauvin of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. He will be sentenced in June.

After the jury convicted Chauvin, President Joe Biden promised Floyd’s family that he would deliver a police reform bill. Today he and Vice President Kamala Harris met with Floyd’s family privately in the Oval Office for more than an hour, but the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act has not become law. The act bars the use of chokeholds and makes it easier to prosecute police officers, but lawmakers have been unable to compromise over so-called “qualified immunity,” a federal doctrine established in 1967 by the Supreme Court that protects officials—including law enforcement officers—from personal liability for much of their behavior while they execute their professional duties. Members of both parties, though, say a deal on the measure is in sight.

Today we learned that the Manhattan district attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., has recently called together a special grand jury to hear a number of cases, including whether to indict former President Trump, other people in charge of running his company, or the Trump Organization itself. That a grand jury is considering whether a former president committed a crime is unprecedented.

It also suggests that Vance believes there is evidence of a crime. There appears to be a focus on whether the Trump Organization manipulated the value of real estate to make it seem more valuable when trying to get loans against it, and less valuable when listing it for tax valuations. Investigators are also looking at compensation for Trump Organization executives.

Vance began to investigate in 2018 after Trump’s former fixer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to making hush-money payments for Trump and to lying to Congress.

The former president also responded today to a lawsuit filed by Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA), who in March filed a lawsuit against Trump; Donald Trump, Jr.; Alabama Representative Mo Brooks; and Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani for inciting the insurrection of January 6. Trump’s lawyers asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit, claiming that the president has “absolute immunity conveyed on the President by the Constitution as a key principle of separation of powers." The memo is the usual political attack we have come to expect from Trump, but it’s interesting: his claim that he enjoys absolute immunity leaves the rest of the defendants out in the cold.

On January 22, just two days after President Biden took office, Lincoln Project founder George Conway published a piece in the Washington Post noting that Trump’s frantic efforts to stay in office might well have been “a desperate fear of criminal indictment.” Trump needed the protection of the presidency to avoid the fallout from his connections with Russia; the Ukraine scandal; and bank, insurance, and tax fraud. Conway noted that refusing to prosecute ex-presidents would undermine the rule of law because it would place them above the law: they could do whatever they wished as president—including trying to overthrow our democracy—knowing they would never answer for it.

Trump, of course, has refused to admit he lost the 2020 election. Today, he issued a statement suggesting that all potential prosecution of him would be political, saying that he was “far in the lead for the Republican Presidential Primary and the General Election in 2024.”

Trump’s memo also suggested he had a First Amendment right to say whatever he wished about the 2020 election, but in January, criminal law professor Joseph Kennedy of the University of North Carolina School of Law pointed out that while Trump’s speech might have been protected, he had a legal duty to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution, a duty that meant he should have immediately told his supporters to stop what they were doing on January 6. His supporters breached the Capitol shortly after 2:00 p.m., and he did not ask them to leave until 4:17, in a video that was itself incendiary.

Meanwhile, the “audit” of 2020 ballots in Maricopa County hit another pothole when the Pennsylvania-based technology company in charge of running the recount refused to renew its contract, which expired on May 14, the day the process was supposed to be done. Wake Technology Services Inc. was subcontracting under Cyber Ninjas. A different technology company has taken over from Wake TSI.

The Nevada Republican Party has its own troubles. It recently censured Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske, a Republican, charging that she had failed “to investigate election fraud” in the 2020 election. Recently, one of the people who claimed to have voted for that censure said on a podcast that he is a member of the far-right Proud Boys. He said he and about 30 of his friends had been urged by state Republican leaders to step into the political fray on the side of the former president and were, he claimed, the deciding votes on the censure. Republicans in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, and in Washoe County, which includes Reno, are now trying to clean the Proud Boys and their ilk out of the party, while Trump loyalists are now trying to purge the party of anti-Trump people.

As of today, 50% of adult Americans are fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and on May 24th, the seven-day average of new cases was the lowest it has been at any point since last June. But those numbers are driven by the vaccinated part of the population. Among those who are unvaccinated, the rate of disease and death is estimated to be as high as it was in late January.

you guys might have noticed my header but you might not have realised that it’s the aboriginal flag or that we also have a flag for the torres strait islander peoples.

both of these flags were designed to represent our people uniquely. 

the aboriginal flag has a red bottom half to represent the land (yes we do have red soil, that’s beside the point though), red ochre used in ceremonies and our connection to the land, a black top half to represent the people who walk the land and a yellow circle for the sun who is protector and life-giver of our people.

the torres strait islander flag is green for the land, blue for the ocean, black for the people and white to represent peace. the dhari (more on those later) represents the islander peoples and the five pointed star represents the five main island groups of the torres strait. the star also exists as a symbol for navigation as the islanders are a seafaring people.

the aboriginal flag was designed by artist Harold Thomas, you can find more about him and his works here , the flag itself was first flown in Adelaide on National Aborigines Day in July 1971 (I don’t know if we still celebrate this day but that’s for another post). the aboriginal flag was commonly recognised as such until 1995 when the government named it an official australian flag and is flown alongside the australian and torres strait islander flags to this day.

the aboriginal flag is protected by copyright laws. 

Harold Thomas wasn’t recognised as the official author of the flag until 1997.

the torres strait islander flag was designed by the late Bernard Namok Sr. you can learn more about him here and here. his design was selected from a competition open only to torres strait islanders (TSI) in 1992 and was officially recognised as an australian flag in 1995.

It has been 5 years since I posted anything. Incredible how my life has changed in 5 years.

In order of events:

Started talk therapy

Separated from my husband (Joe)

Tried my hand at kickboxing and loved it. The gym was too expensive though so then I started running and then weight lifting and before long I was in the best shape of my life and feeling better than ever physically (after battling a 1.5 yr long migraine that had me in the worst physical shape of my life)

Started rebound relationship (Rob)

Bought a condo in Everett (in the ghetto with help from my dad with a down payment because that’s all I could afford on a GS9 salary). I had a love/hate with it cause it was always dark but I loved the floor plan and the fenced in yard… and it was mine!

Sold the RV (and lost $20k because vehicles are not investments)

Officially divorced (Joe had moved across country and met someone special)

Broke up with Rob

Dated new boyfriend (Jeff)

Bought a used VW Golf TSI with all my savings (paid cash and bought a base model, all I could afford)

Got accepted for a position as a GS-11/GS-12 in Yokosuka, Japan

Moved into Jeff’s tiny 500 sq ft 1 bedroom apartment with Bill the dog in Tacoma to work from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic

Married Jeff and changed my middle and last name

Sold the Golf I just bought to my uncle for a loss, but I’m happy it went to him

Re-homed little Bill with my Aunt in Myrtle Beach, SC after 14 years of being by my side

Moved to Yokohama, Japan/ started new job

I guess I’ll add some photos later… it’s kind of fun to check back in after so much change.

Sidenote: I had been putting off buying a car cause I had been applying for jobs abroad and I knew I’d have to get rid of it. But my Xterra was costing me so much in repairs and gas. I 100% believes in my heart that if I bought a new car, after that I would finally get a call back for a new job. That’s always how that shit goes.

Feilan’s common tongue was borrowed from humans not long after transcontinental communications began. The Ancient Feian language which was originally spoken there has very complicated grammar, most notably over a hundred unique pronouns indicating gender, familiarity, social status, and more! Fucking up your forms of address in the old times was a mortal offense, and it was socially acceptable to challenge someone to a duel for addressing you incorrectly. Humans learning Ancient Feian were walking into a death trap. Fairies who caught on to this started learning the humans’ language to make things easier, and then it became popularized in mainland Feilan via several short-lived social revolutions. You can’t behead me for not using the respectful pronoun if this new language only has one option! In modern times, it’s a given that the fairies speak common, and Ancient Feian is used only for spellwork and some very formal record-keeping. It’s sort of like Latin. 

Vestiges of the language still exist in Feilan’s culture, though. Parties called debuts are held at ages 15 and 24, if you can afford them, to signify that a teenager is growing up! The original purpose of these was to signify a change in pronouns from child to teenager to adult. If any major changes occurred in gender and/or rank, a debut would be held to announce those too. The exact customs of a debut party vary from tribe to tribe. 

The Irkatzi don’t have debuts, or the same social norms surrounding forms of address, because they have their own language and existed as an independent culture for a very long time before becoming part of Feilan. 

There are a lot of locations in Feilan with super generic names, like the Great Castle and the Great Forest and the Tsi Citadel. All of these places do have actual names, they’ve just been forgotten over thousands of years and replaced by simpler alternatives. I’ve been waffling back and forth on names for the castle and the forest, but the Citadel was called Sternheim. Some official documents still use this name, but there’s only one Tsi Citadel, so the generic term will do.

A group of artists known as the Trump Statue Initiative is behind the installations, including one that depicts Trump holding up a Bible while Black Lives Matters protesters are beaten and another showing him telling a masked child to "go back to school" while holding a golf club.

"The concept is that the history he's painting of himself right now, where his narcissistic or racist or self-serving moments abound, this is what he's leaving us with," filmmaker Bryan Buckley told The Hill. Buckley, who was nominated for an Oscar this year, curated the three installations that went up around D.C. on Friday.

The performers’ stage labeled Trump as a “Destroyer of Civil Rights and Liberties” from 2016 to 2020 - hinting at a loss to former Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in the upcoming presidential election.

“Today marks the official launch of the Trump Statue Initiative (TSI), a way for artists to share their point of view on our 45th President’s legacy in a way he can truly relate to: through realistic ‘heroic’ statues highlighting the self-serving, narcissistic and racist moments that have notoriously defined his presidency,” a TSI statement obtained by PoPville read.

“Organized by two time Academy nominated writer and director Bryan Buckley, this installation interprets how future generations might remember Donald Trump’s legacy in response to the defining moments of his presidency, and encourages others to get involved.”

Trump is certainly no stranger to having his image and mannerisms mocked, but this particular depiction of 45 as a statue appears to act as a counter to the president’s recent backing of post-Civil War Confederate monuments, the General Andrew Jackson statue in President’s Park and other controversial figures.

While millions of people were marching against police brutality and racism in the US, Trump threw his support behind police unions and spouted uncouth comments about George Floyd.

However, when it came time to address controversial monuments across the US, Trump quickly signed an executive order in support of the inanimate figures.

The phony Trump’s posing with the holy text on Friday was a callback to the actual US president’s puzzling photoshoot in front of St. John's Episcopal Church on June 1.

Jokes and laughs at Trump’s expense on that occasion were short-lived, however, as it was revealed soon after that US Park Police officers acting on orders from the Trump administration had cleared a path for the president by gassing and forcefully removing peaceful protesters from Lafayette Park.

How it Began

Mary had the Stillwater Dog Training school in Brooksville. She worked with dog owners of all types but noticed how veterans would come to her classes because they were told to get a dog to help with their PTSD, but then the vet would not complete the classes. “I began contacting the veterans to encourage their return to class. Inevitably, they had missed class because they were having trouble getting out of their home and connecting with civilians in the lesson. I began to see that there was a need for a program targeting these heroes,” Mary explained. At one point, Dr. Diane Scotland-Coogan, of Saint Leo University contacted Mary about a veteran she was working with who had severe PTSD to ask if a dog might help him. Diane came to visit and ended up assisting in creating the nonprofit. K9 Partners for Patriots received its official 501c3 designation in November 2014. Stillwater Dog Training was closed, and Mary committed her God-given talents and drive to helping our Veterans recover from post-traumatic stress (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and military sexual trauma (MST) through the experience of training and caring for their own service dog. Mary closed her Stillwater facility to concentrate solely on helping military veterans and their families.

Training the Trainer is Key

There are approximately 14 facilities that train dogs to help veterans cope with their service-induced disabilities throughout the United States, but K9 Partners for Patriots trains the serviceman to train his or her own dog. “As far as we know,” Greg Laskoski, Communications Director, states, “we are the only facility that is working with the Veteran in this way.” As a military wife, Mary was sensitive to the needs of these veterans to achieve and compete. “I was seeing brave men and women returning home from war with a life that's shattered. Brave men and women, I'm talking about Army Rangers, Special Ops, and Green Berets; Colonels to infantry.”

They were isolated in their homes, or in a room in their home. Trapped by PTSD and needing help to regain their dignity. These are high-achieving people. And then there were all these dogs in shelters and rescues throughout the area who needed someone to advocate for them. The dogs K9 Partners for Patriots recruits for their service dog training program for veterans are procured from area shelters, rescues, private donors, and breeders. “Pasco County Animal Services has placed more than 15 dogs with K9P4P and is proud to continue helping K9P4P find suitable canine candidates for this wonderful program,” states Michael Shumate of PCAS.

How the Program Works

The K9P4P programs run for nineteen weeks and are taught to “squads” of ten veterans, each with a chosen canine partner. The veteran is required to attend each one-hour weekly class and then spend at least 2 hours a day training their partner. The two-hour daily training must be broken into increments of 10 to 15-minutes and are conducted outside of the veteran’s home; on the sidewalk, in the park, or at the training center for example.

  We were finding that these wounded men and women were being held prisoner in their own homes by their service-connected PTSD, TBI, and MSA. They had served America honorably, but when they came home nothing the Veterans Administration was doing for them was working. Their entire families were affected, and suicide became a very real option. “Most of our 238 active program participants found that the most difficult thing to do was to get here for the first time. We have found veterans transfixed in our parking lot for hours due to their PTSD or sitting in their car unable to get in the door. We must let them take the time it takes and when they get through the door, we greet them with a hug. They can see that they are not a number here. In fact, each participant is given a badge with their name to help them know they are a part of something,” Mary explains. Each veteran must train their own dog and take that dog home to live with them. Dogs that aren’t trained are not as nice to live with. Mary watches closely at each weekly class to ensure the vet has practiced with their service animal during the week. When one vet has done exceptionally well, she watches the rest of the platoon work harder to raise the bar. As the trainer and their dog spend more time together, the healing and the bonding begins.

The Change in Lives is Profound

Throughout the five-month class, a metamorphosis occurs. To supplement the training, an in-house mental health counselor is available. A veteran liaison is on staff who is a graduate of the program. A canine massage therapist helps the dogs stay healthy and veterinary bills can be taken care of by K9 Partners for Patriots. This well-rounded approach helps veterans who apply to the program develop trust with the trainers and the facility. “Our family is welcome any time the facility is open. We have coffee available during the day and they can just bring their dog and hang out,” explains Gregg. “To help foster the family mentality of the organization, we hold quarterly events for spouses and children to attend.” For veterans to apply to the program they have to meet only four requirements: Honorably Discharged from Military Service A letter from their Physician/Counselor or VA stating the diagnosis of service-related PTSD, TBI, and/or MST and stating that the vet is medically, mentally and physically able to handle the responsibilities of owning a dog. Must have DD214 long form May not have any felony, domestic violence, sexual offense of any kind and/or any type of animal mistreatment abuse, neglect or cruelty in their records. Background checks are conducted on each application for the safety of the program and the dog. There is never any financial charge to a qualifying veteran to participate in the program.

A Proven System

"The whole thing with our program is not just dog training - it was giving them life skills. We're teaching them how to live again," Mary explains, but there is no acknowledgment by the VA that therapy dogs are effective in healing PTSD. Scientific proof was needed. K9 Partners for Patriots partnered with St. Leo University psychotherapist and master level social workers to conduct an evidence-based study of the effect of their service dog training program with veterans diagnosed with PTSD, TBI and/or MST using the Trauma Symptom Inventory-2 (TSI-2) assessment, and the results are GREAT!
