29. if they could have chosen a different profession, what would it be?

so my gal sofía had huge aspirations before joining wpd – she planned on going to med school, but at the last minute, she psyched herself out AND bobby convinced her out of it. he was going back home to work in wayhaven, so he suggested she take a gap year! their relationship was already on the rocks, and sofía didn't want to make it worse with distance ESPECIALLY bc she was so unsure of committing to four more years of school (even though she'd dreamed about it since she was a kid). in that gap year, bobby dumped her :(

anyway, if she would've gone to med school, i see her as working in a fast paced hospital in the city for a while, choosing to stay an attending physician instead of rising in the ranks, before eventually opening up her own small family practice in wayhaven or somewhere like it! but if she didn't go to med school, like in her canon, then she'd go the forensics route and have taken a lab job instead :) it's a big reason why verda is her canon bestie hehe

i also think it's a huge possibility that if verda had gotten the lab position first before she was stuck in wayhaven she'd opt for teaching biology in at the local middle/high school <3

i wasn’t tagged buuuuuut i just picked up an old role-swap au type of fic wip that i wrote.... 5k words on and then just abandoned it for a year and a half LMAO

context here is that mason is a human, a mechanic born and raised in wayhaven, and sofía is a visitor (and vampire) he’s trying to pipe. crazy dreams, crazy villain, crazy love story. also farah and tina are there and are dating :-)

Laycott’s is home.

He knows the place like the back of his hand. The tear in the soft pleather in the booth closest to the sticky “employee-only” toilet, the pool table propped up by folded cardboard squares, the broken shelves in the supply closet that just won’t sit quite right (his fault, of course).

He’s been in every corner, in every seat, in every brand of liquor. 

Strangers are few and far between, especially in a small town like Wayhaven.

So when she walks through the doors and straight up to the counter with bright eyes and a gentle smile, Mason’s gut instinct is to ask for her name.

He’s nothing if but a completionist.

“What?” He chuckles, pushing himself forward to rest his elbows on his knees. “What’s so funny?” “I don’t mean this in a rude way at all, Mason, but was that supposed to impress me?” She’s laughing so he can barely make out what she’s saying, but he definitely zeroed in on the way she said Mason (with a huge grin on her face).

“It’s my party trick.”

“You’ve gotta have something better than that.” She’s still giggling behind her hand, unimpressed by his lame talent. 

“Tough crowd,” he smiles over the lip of the bottle, tipping it back.

“Not tough, just a woman who’s seen it all.”

sofía has two exes! one is purely headcanon and the other is bobby. both were long term, committed relationships that had a significant impact on her – it's part of the reason she's convinced herself that she can handle a casual relationship with mason. she doesn't want to get hurt again because she gave her all and it wasn't enough you know? her first boyfriend was her best friend from her preteen years – they dated all throughout high school! because they were both huge overachievers with big dreams, they amicably split, even though it was devastating for her. she really thought that she'd marry him! she knew that he was better suited for her than bobby that's for sure – but bobby was still very dear to her (she used to care about marriage a lot but since that possibility has been stripped from her twice already she doesn't think about it much anymore). also i wrote a fic ab her first ex LMAO you can read it here <3

24. do they have any keepsakes from their father?

sofía has plenty of keepsakes from rook. rebecca leaving her alone and being purposefully elusive about him led sofía to taking matters into her own hands – she spent a lot of time exploring the attic and rummaging through old boxes to try to find anything that could give her closure.

she has old photos, but one particular pic she keeps in her wallet is a polaroid of the three of them on vacation, and she's sitting on his arm grabbing his face in true toddler fashion <3 she has his old library card and community college id in her wallet, too, but all his information is scratched out.

she has a small shelf full of old books he loved too – full of chicken scratch margin notes, highlighted passages, some torn because of how frequently dogeared they were, shreds of paper as bookmarks – but her favorite one is a mystery novel that he took notes on while reading. he wanted to crack who the killer was and did it by the halfway point, so the rest of the book was full of little jokes about how obvious the reveal is. she reads it a lot.

HEHE i wrote a fic about this actually! you can read it here if you want <3 as of right now, no she won't turn. she has a very complicated relationship with her mortality – honestly, it takes her a long time to really settle into her own skin and be fulfilled by the life she's living! it takes her a while to get to a point where she can call herself truly happy, and tl;dr for the fic i wrote, she knows that if she chose to turn, it wouldn't really be for her. it'd be for someone else's happiness (mason's), so in choosing to not turn, she's putting herself first. it's the one situation she knows she can't people please her way out of :/

I completely get why Sofia would feel pressured to say yes, it's a loaded question. Especially with her feelings about her mortality (which I'd love to hear about btw if you're down to share👀👀).

Zuri ends up saying that she's curious when she's asked about the blood drinking. She's always been a big supernatural fangirl so her answer would usually be a yes lol, but she's worried that she's only valuable to people now (ub, the chamber, rebecca - especially rebecca) because of her blood. After the brief conversation with her LI (i still have her romancing everyone💀) about her blood and them being tempted by it, she isn't keen on the possibility of having those thoughts confirmed.

Also, re: the chamber. How did Sofia feel about them before and after meeting them? And how does she feel about not being a detective anymore?

Which just sooo...uuuuaaah. I feel like it's WAY too soon for that, I don't don't have words to express how bummed I was when I read that. Especially since the detective can't say no. They've only had that title for a couple of months. I get that they're so involved that it makes sense for them to eventually be a full on agent, but in the 3rd book of a 7 book series? With the detective barely getting a chance to think about it?🧍🏽‍♀️

AH !!!! i love mortality talk hehe okay so i've written this in fic form before more fleshed out than this but here's a tl;dr version <3 so sofía's whole thing is that she struggles letting go of who she thought she was going to be and reconciling with what her life is – she's always wondering what her life could've been if she'd done a, b, or c. and with mason, it's the first time she's really able to let go, because there aren't any expectations – except for turning. sofía knows if she chose to turn, it wouldn't be her choice. she'd be turning for mason. and a huge part of her character is the fact that she's taking her own agency back by not turning – truthfully, i still don't know if she ever will! if she made the decision it'd be in old age (okay time to laugh about mis/hka's whole 'de-aging' thing, because she's afraid of being 40 years old i guess) TY FOR ASKING I LOVE TALKING AB THIS STUFF

also ZURI !!!!!! i just want to hug her and tell her she's worth more than her blood UGH also all of ub needs to give her a smooch and tell her everything is okay </3 she's precious 2 me !!!!!! i really hope that by the time that we get blood drinking in canon, she's more comfortable with it <333 she deserves a lil bitey bite KFMKDKMDF

OOF THE CHAMBER.......... so many thoughts. so so so many. none of them good honestly LMAO so i think sofía was nervous/scared to meet them at first, because although she's able to woo over most people with her trademark friendly/genuine approach – the whole thing just made her very uneasy. afterwards, she felt even worse – a lot of her discomfort comes from her feeling like overall she has a lack of agency in any situation relating to her job, and meeting an even more authoritative, what-we-say-always-goes-no-matter-what group that's expecting her to kneel at their feet and blindly serve them, is fucking with her mind. she was accepting of the existence of supernaturals in book 1, but truthfully, the more she learns, the more i think internally she's starting to freak out.

also! i think that she's deeply upset about not being a detective – not because she ever wanted to be a cop in the first place, but because for years, she's held onto the idea that this year is the year she'll go to med school. "i can leave this job at anytime. this is just temporary." but the more that she gets sucked into the supernatural world, the more she's having to divorce herself from the version of herself that she's always wanted to be. (she wants to be a person who helps people, even though she already is, but she never thinks what she's doing is enough)

ALSO YES TO THE LAST PARAGRAPH !!! dude. it's SOOOOO soon. and i know from the stuff mis/hka has said, i highly doubt that this is a setup for something later – like even the idea that mc joins the agency and is immediately terrible at the position for narrative purposes – or even the idea of mc being forced to join for surveillance purposes – i just don't trust her with those types of complexities

3. do they have any piercings/ tattoos/scars?

sofía just has her ears pierced! she's happy enough with those piercings – when she was younger she wanted a lot more piercings but as she's grown up she's comfortable with just one set hehe

as for tattoos... in the book 3 rewrite im planning i wrote down that she gets a small easy to hide tattoo (her first) to get out of the blood drive (it was either that or admitting to her coworkers that she's sexually active and she would rather die than do that) – and in another oc ship i've written that she got a little tattoo on her butt/hip area so i think in the wayhaven verse there's something there! probably something plain like a heart outlined in red :) (or in her oc ship's case... a candy heart that says "bite me" w fangs)

and scars – her weight's fluctuated her whole life (chubby kid, skinny adolescent, put on weight in her early 20's, lost it again) so she has quite a few stretch marks! she was v insecure ab them for a while but mason thinks her tiger stripes are sexy :) (they're concentrated on her thighs, stomach, and boobs – huge part of why her clothing combo of choice is pants + turtleneck) i actually wrote a lil drabble for waysum where i mention some of this (cw for body image issues)

9. what is their relationship with their mother like?

not great that's for sure! LMAO yeah by book 2 she slowly climbed to a nearly 30% stat w rebecca but then went back down during book 3 DKMKMFDKMDF rebecca makes her feel inferior and hasn't done anything that makes sofía want to open herself up to rebecca again. also her very idealized version of rook is infinitely better than rebecca could ever be in her mind

25. how do they handle the reveal of the supernatural?

very calmly and coolly MKDKDMKDM even though she's an anxious person who's definitely afraid for her life since ub came to town, she's also very rational so.. i think she compartmentalizes in order to avoid her fear LMAO pushes down her stress and anxiety instead of facing it so. she is very accepting bc otherwise she'd be at rock bottom (yes this is unhealthy KMDFMKDM)

7. do they have any fears?

oooh this is such a good one... this question begs another one tbh, if you're fearless, then what truly scares you? when you're not used to processing feelings, because things don't bother you, what happens when they do? i think for mason, he's scared of the weight of his own feelings. it's not one that he's aware of at all – i think that's what adds to the scariness of it. it's a fear that creeps up on him when he doesn't expect it – it's subconscious. like why does he care so much that sofía is constantly in harms' way? why does he feel like his world crumbles when he sees her injured in b3? (we all know the answer to this but ofc he doesn't. dummy)

8. what do they think of unit bravo?

I LOVE THIS okay so sofía is getting closer and closer to admitting that they're her family and that she loves them – at first, she was welcoming and friendly with them like she is with everyone else, but it's kind of a customer service-esque facade. not a lot of people get to see past the professional mask she presents! individually, she definitely had a bit of a crush on nate and felix at first but quickly quelled those feelings in exchange for friendship – she's not very close to adam, but they're growing on each other. her first impressions of adam and mason were very similar – she didn't really like them. but by book 3 she considers felix and nate close friends, adam a respected teammate, and mason... it's too complex!

21. what does their apartment look like?

sofía's apartment is definitely her sanctuary! she never really felt at home in her mother's house, so she's bent over backwards to make her space home-y. dark interior, lots of bookshelves, and is always clean. with the bookshelves and the framed art + wall decorations, it can look a bit cluttered, but it's intentional! not quite maximalist, but it could be that someday LMAO (mason is very at home when he comes over KMDKDFD)

sofía is great with kids! moreso tweens than toddlers, because she spent a lot of years tutoring (all the way up till she was promoted to detective, actually), but if she had to choose an age group to babysit, it'd be 10-13 year olds. she's babysat for verda and eric before a couple times before, though, and they warmed up to her quickly! sofía also doesn't babytalk kids, bc she'd hate for them to think she was talking down to them (she remembers it happening too often when she was young by rebecca) so most kids in her life confide in her like she's their cool aunt KMDKDMKF for mason, i think that if he were tasked with taking care of a kid against his will, he would get it done, but he wouldn't be happy about it. i can't imagine that mason has been around anyone under 18 for a long time – his job doesn't call for it, so why does he need to be skilled in childcare – so it's a learned skill imo. i don't think he's malicious towards kids, he's just indifferent LMAO he's not awful with them, it's just that when you barely understand adult human needs... how on earth could he anticipate the needs of a child yk? this isn't part of the question but i wanted to specify anyways KMDFKMDFKM but i don't see mason and sofía having kids at all – they're happy with being godparents, and babysitting friends' kids at any time, but neither of them feel equipped enough to become parents tbh. plus, they don't feel like they're missing out on anything by not having kids, and... i don't want to get too into mortality talk since i'm dragging this ask out (SORRY), but as of rn sofía doesn't turn so... i don't think she would want to put that on potential kids yk? making the loss more painful than it has to be

10. what was their last big fight? what did they learn from it?

if we're talking in canon, it's gotta be the bakery scene </3 but in my own personal canon for them, their biggest argument is always going to be about sofía turning. mason is terrified of suddenly losing her, so he tries to bring it up when it feels right, and every time she's just not ready. it's hard for her to articulate why she doesn't want to turn, and it's hard for him to articulate why he needs her to turn.

through it, they've both learned to take it day by day – they're both learning patience, but it means something different for each of them. every single day of her life, she could decide to turn, and every single day, mason could grant her that wish. that's what gets them through every day :)

11. what good do they bring out in each other?

mason brings out her confidence in her mind and body – and dulls down the imposter syndrome. she's lighter when she's around him, and so much more comfortable with herself!

sofía brings out his adventurous side (i don't mean sexually, but that does apply LMAO) – he says so himself in canon that his job at the agency is really it for him. he doesn't have many hobbies besides chasing sexual gratification and fighting and smoking MDKFDKMKM mason doesn't really Care about his existence. he's here, and he'll be here forever. he thinks that's all there is to it. he doesn't enjoy the majority of human pleasures on a planet riddled with humans, doesn't remember his past, doesn't care about his future. being with sofía has kind of given him a lust for life – she presents him with hobbies to try, places to see, experiences to digest and feel. he's not used to that, but he's grown to like it!

“hm, that’s a great question,” sofía murmured, brows furrowed, glancing over at felix’s soft expression.

“what’s wrong?” she laughed, wiggling her legs, which were draped across his lap.

“you’re really pretty when you’re concentrating, that’s all,” he shrugged, rubbing her leg absentmindedly.

“aw,” she said, leaning forward to press a quick kiss to his lips. “you’re so sweet.”

“you know, that’s what i would’ve asked for,” he grinned before making kissy lips at her.

“a kiss? oh that’s too boring, babe, think bigger!” she gestured her arms outward. “you can get those from me all the time.”

“doesn’t mean i don’t want more of ‘em,” he said, leaning forward to grip her chin in his hand, pressing a deeper kiss to her lips. “i’ll never get tired of kissing you.”

she sighed, intertwining their fingers. “he’s perfect, isn’t he?” she shook her head. “anyways.”

after a few seconds of thought, she nodded. “i’d give him a chance to visit home. a portal for however long he wanted to go back.”

felix’s eyes softened, and before she could explain the analytical sides of the gift, he stood on the couch, shuffling until he straddled her in a koala-style hug. “oh my god, what are you doing? this is so cute.” she laughed, the weight of him pressing a hearty laugh from her.

“you’re the best,” he mumbled into her neck as she wrapped her arms around his waist.

“stop, no i’m not,” she said, rubbing circles on his back. his breathing deepened, eyes heavy. “sometimes he takes naps like this. i don’t mind it,” sofía mused, drawing small hearts with her fingers.

“if i couldn’t bring him home, i’d get him a signed copy of back to the future.”

he perked up, whipping his head up so that he was nose to nose with her. “oh that’s fucking rad! you know me so well.”

“yeah of course i do,” she said, pressing her lips softly on his.
