Summary: A few missing moments from 3x05 and 3x06 as Kiara attempts to deal with the fallout of everything that happened.

A/N: This spiralled out of control (as all the most frustrating yet rewarding fics seem to do) from me noticing how quiet Kie was in the truck post motorcycle crash... and here we are 9k later! I've never really written a missing moment that fit properly into canon like this, so I hope I've done it justice!

A super huge thank you to Diana (@jojameswinter) who betaed this three separate times, which she insisted wasn't insane. I still think it was, but this fic wouldn't be the same without her help so I guess she may have been right in the end. Thanks for everything you do!!

As the moment stretched on, she felt something else bubble up inside of her the longer they silently stood there. She fought to breathe properly, to calm her racing heart, to push back the tears threatening to fall. Her relief quieted into something deeper, more solid and heavy, as he shifted his weight back and forth, having the good sense to look a bit embarrassed the longer she glared at him.

They’d already gone through this once, in the lifeboat, his face pale and unresponsive as she screamed at him to wake up, panic clogging her throat. She couldn’t keep doing it.

“Don’t… don’t you ever do that again,” she said lowly, in a voice she barely recognized, amazed that it only wobbled slightly.

She wanted to say more, to make sure he knew how afraid she was, the stabbing pain in her chest that wouldn’t go away even though he was right there in front of her. How much she needed him, relied on him, always looked to him, but she couldn’t seem to find the words.

THIS IS SO FUN omg thank you for forcing me to actually look in my docs for the first time in a thousand years 😭 the below excerpt is from the missing moments day from last jiara week.

it's my fav for a couple reasons. 1) because when i first worked on that fic, i hated it so much that i was convinced it would never see the light of day and 2) because from an author standpoint, this little section is basically the thesis statement for the entire fic and i think it's rare that i'm actually able to distill/condense something down like that. it's set after the bike crash in 3x05 and HEAVILY inspired by lizzy mcalpine's reckless driver and i really wanted to highlight the different ways that jj and kie approach and show love.

It’s scaring her, how JJ seems to think the only way he can help the Pogues is being the sacrificial bait. It’s always been part of his DNA but lately, it’s like he’s physically unable to stop. And Kiara doesn’t understand it because she would do anything to keep him safe.  She kept him from drowning, fought to keep him above the surface whether it was the unknown depths of the Atlantic or the equally troubling waters of his own mind. It was all the same to her - the risk, the reward. She cares enough to keep him safe, to yell at him about the stupid chances he takes. She loves him enough to pull him away from the edge. JJ, though? He’s bold, reckless. He’d set himself on fire to keep the Pogues warm, to keep any of them from even wondering what it was like to be cold. And she’s terrified for the day he burns too bright, when his wax-coated wings fly too close to the sun. Kiara’s wondered, plenty of times, why the fuck he’s like this. Never takes her long to come to the same conclusion: that her best friend has only ever known extremes, that he has no semblance of middle ground or a soft place to land, that he thinks love is supposed to hurt.  But she can know all this and still hate it.

Sometimes obx manages to strike comedy gold so I wanted to ask what were the funniest moments of the season for you? It absolutely SENT ME when JJ was on the phone with John B in 3x09 trying to explain the plan had changed and—

*Tire explodes*

JB: “JJ?”

JJ over the phone: “DAMN IT!!!”

*Beep beep beep*

JB: “…Son of a bitch.”

That shit took me OUT 😂

And of course Rudy’s whole delivery with the fake cat story was hysterical but when he said “The mailman was coming at 45 miles per hour so” and then SNAPPED so loud and abruptly, I legit had to pause for a good 5 minutes to catch my breath lmao

Good question because this cast is SO FUNNY.

Those are both great ones. I have to include Kie’s fake cry/reaction to the cat story too because it was so good. And any time you have JJ and John B together it’s gonna be hilarious. Them crawling under that table together SENT me, and the map stuff. They’re so great together.

I think the singular funniest thing for me where I literally could not stop laughing was the entire Topper + the pogues sequence in 3x05. It was all hits, no misses, I could NOT stop laughing. Starting with Sarah going to coerce him into helping them. It almost makes we wish we hadn’t gotten arson Topper so we could see that again. On a similar note, all of the Kie/Topper bits in episode seven were gold.

Pope and Cleo robbing the store was so good and so was “I have a Samsung” and that whole sequence sjsksms

Another tiny one that unexpectedly got me giggling was Rafe saying “you missed” when Rose threw her drink at him. He’s actually so funny sometimes lmao.
