Having been in this fandom for a long time, I think what's become apparent--and I think that's where most of our problems stem from--is that PERSONAL INTERPRETATION has become the default thing to fall back onto, and consequently, it's been used over and over again to negate or disregard the author's INTENT, because it doesn't align with personal preference. Consequently, people began being duped into believing that a reader's personal interpretation of text is 'right' and that canon doesn't matter and that SJM's own intention don't matter as well.

Here are some examples:

Did SJM INTENDED for Cassian to be a terrible mate who will sell Nesta for a chicken nugget if Rhys tells him to? Was the intent to show how poor Nessian pairing is?

OR

Is it just that Cassian did not live up to the readers' own expectations of what they wanted for Nesta? And is their interpretation of Cassian as an awful match for Nesta, who doesn't care about her, only cares about sex, and would never stand up for her or support her, actually correct?

Did SJM INTENDED for Gwyn's scenes in ACOSF to be romantic towards Azriel? Was her cutting the ribbon or climbing or running a prelude to the great Gwynriel romance novel?

OR

Is it that Gwyn was created to be a springboard for Nesta's self-discovery and healing? Someone who accepted, supported and encouraged Nesta when Nesta was at her lowest? And did many readers' animosity towards Elain's characters drove them to willfully interpret absolutely non-romantic scenes as romantic in a futile hope that somehow, their personal wants would translate to page?

Did SJM intended for Rhys and Feyre to be viewed as ignorant despots who hate their own people, only care about wealth and power, and don't give a damn about anyone but themselves and their five houses?

OR

Is Rhys's love for Feyre the driving force behind many of his decisions? for example giving her an extravagant house? Does Rhys really want to trample on everyone's rights, or is he allowing some of his subjects the freedom of autonomy and self-actualization? Is the intent to show that he is a thoughtful and imperfect leader, who cares about the welfare of his people, or is that he is a dictator who gave his lover an empty title?

While SJM's execution of certain topics isn't perfect, I think that wilful ignorance and the desire to see something that isn't there, and something that SJM didn't intended at all, is really the cause of all the shipwars and the IC hate.

Is SJM REALLY in love with Lucien and is excited to write his book, or is that the fantasy of his stans? Whereas SJM's never been particularly complimentary towards Lucien and his character in interviews or in canon?

Will Tamlin's elusive 'redemption arc' REALLY be something that SJM is interested in writing? Or her calling him a 'douchebag' is kind of indicative of her feelings towards him?

"Elriels are obsessed with canon'. We heard this again and again and again. Being obsessed with canon' simply means that we are paying attention to what SJM's intentions are and what she wants to convey through her words. Elriels, just like everyone else have headcanons about Elain, and Az, and Elriel. But we don't discard the actual books and writing in favour of our headcanons.

I feel that lack of consideration towards 'intent' is really leading some people down a very slippery road, where at the end of it, they'll find a lot of crushed dreams. Because most of the time, 'black' is just....black. It's not white. It's not even opaque. It's just, black. I think people should remember that when they do their 'analysis'.

I'm tired of the shitty arguments from pro Gwynriel or Elucien. These people don't know how to read and are looking for bullshit excuses. Once again, they're going to fall hard when the Elriel book and Elriel endgame arrives.

The delusion of "If Elain had wanted to break the bond, why hasn't she done it yet ?" Oh, I don't know, maybe because something so important regarding Elain should be discussed from her point of view ?!

The delusion of "If Elriel wanted to be together, why aren't they still ?" Oh, I don't know, maybe something so important about them as one of the main characters in the series should be covered in a book from their point of view / about them ?! Like Nessian ?!

The "Azriel needs therapy before dating" rant is a display of cruel bias, because literally every character on this show could use therapy. But why should Azriel be the one solving all his problems before being in a relationship ?! It's just an excuse to keep him from being with Elain. But ironically, he no longer needs therapy if the future partner is no longer Elain but Gwyn.

The delusion of "Azriel is only sexually obsessed with Elain" when literally every guy on this show is horny for the women they like is huge evidence of bad faith. Even more so when it's the very first time in 3 books that we have a scene of this kind for Elriel while everything else was about romantic emotional development, and we learn in this same bonus chapter where Azriel is excited for Elain that he has also been looking at the gifts she gave him every evening for 1 year instead of having used them. But somehow the relationship is only based on unhealthy sexual desire ?!

The disillusionment of "SJM always cheats on us with several romantic interests, so Elriel won't end up together" is powerful... Already, Bryce & Hunt ?! Then, yes, SJM generally gives several love interests to its characters. Azriel already had Mor. Elain already had Grayson.

And don't even get me started on the "Elain is going to end up with Tamlin because she likes flowers and Tamlin is the hight lord of the Spring Court" bullshit because otherwise I might get really angry. Crackship worse than Gwynriel !

I can't wait for the Elriel book to come out so all this bullshit stops. Or at least, for Elriel to finally become canon like it was always planned. Because be sure that the pros Gwynriel and Elucien, once their illusions are shattered, will tell bullshit like this book is not consistent with the others and that it's just fan service in order to prove themselves right. Damn people, people have talked about SJM, all its couples have always been obvious.

Fuck it, we're reclaiming the Gwyn-is-a-lightsinger theory because I had a thought, and it perfectly matches Azriel.

It’s funny that antis like to say how Gwyn = Lightsinger = evil because it’s not a bad thing when she’s an SJM character with the significant amount of development she has received. SJM prides herself on establishing that any power can be used for either side; it all depends on which side that person is on.

Reading ToG has examples of this where a power can be used depending on who and why they wield it.

Gwyn is the Asterin to Nesta’s Manon.

Gwyn is part river nymph, so not everything about Lightsingers would apply to her. She has shown up as a friendly face when someone is feeling lost. She was the one to strike up a conversation with Nesta during the early days of her recovery and was there when Azriel left the river house after his conversation with Rhys.

If she feeds off of people, Nesta and Az wouldn’t care because of how close they are to Amren, who used to drink blood.

But the second thing that caught me is that they are the last thing a person sees before their deaths, and they kill for sport, not food.

Gwyn is a Valkyrie, and the one thing she was obsessed with, other than cutting the ribbon, was mind-stilling. I think seeing Az rescue her, the slaughter within seconds, the cold gaze, and his demeanor when he fights is inspiring for Gwyn because of how powerless she felt when the attack happened.

I think it’s supposed to work in the opposite with how Nessian fight - they fight with feeling, and their source comes from this need to protect. Gwynriel both turn on a switch and become different people when they need to fight.

I think that’s why there is a misunderstanding between canon Az and fanon Az. We see that he’s capable of being supportive and how he overextends himself to protect, but we also see this cold angry side that just simmers underneath. I was not at all surprised with how he behaved in his BC because it’s always been there.

So I wonder if that would extend to how Gwyn behaves when she’s in Valkyrie mode, taking on more of his cold rage-like behavior for the same reason why Az leans more into it when he fights. Mindstilling is a way for Gwyn to mimic how Az was when he saved her.

Lightsingers kill for sport, not food, so for some reason, I can see their bond snapping when Az is overwhelmed or overrun, and all he sees is this glowing figure luring enemies away from him before slaughtering them in moments with a ghost of a smile on her face, covered in enemies’ blood, because she’s … having fun.

No offence to anyone, but I feel that sometimes things get a bit out of hand! I don't want to get into controversy, I just like to enjoy Sarah J. Maas' books and I love to enjoy the theories of the fans... saying the following, I'm very much Team Gwynriel, I read the books and it amazes me because although there are moments of Elriel, reading them I could never 100% romanticize those scenes, I never felt the spark of something strong growing in comparison as was the case with Nessian.

However with the extra chapter I became obsessed with the idea of Gwyn and Az.

Now saying this, whatever happens! Whichever couple is left, (and here I stressed that I just want them to have their happy ending too) whether it's Elriel or Gwynriel or even another couple, I would still enjoy that book very much! And here we are forgetting that no matter who we love, it's this amazing writer who is going to build that relationship for us and take us into the story she wants to tell us.

In the end this is to enjoy and transport us to these fantasy worlds for a little while as we carry on with our routine. Let's not forget it👀

Share your headcanons about Gwynriel children, pretty please??

Yes! Headcanons I have for the Gwynriel babies:

Pregnancy

Despite being the last couple to get together, they are quick to have children.

The first pregnancy is a total surprise and Gwyn finds out one day when she can’t keep her favourite cake down. Azriel is away on a mission and Gwyn is apprehensive as she doesn’t know how he’ll react.

Of course, as soon as he winnows through the door and finds Gwyn cooking an unusual feast of roasted potatoes and stewed apple pie, Azriel just freezes.

He scents it immediately and Gwyn genuinely thinks he may be going into cardiac arrest for how still he becomes.

And then he just… bursts into tears. He runs to her so fast and then falls to his knees and fully sobs. Gwyn follows suit, coming down to the ground with him saying, “You’re not mad?” Az just blinks in shock before replying “Berdara, how could I ever be mad at you for giving me such a blessing?”

The shadows are naturally delighted and instantly turn into overprotective slithery hounds at any opportunity. They also like to wrap around her belly and report every. single. movement to Azriel.

For the first time in his entire life, he takes leave from work to be beside Gwyn through it all. He takes overprotective to a whole new level and whatever Gwyn wants, Gwyn gets. Chocolate cake at 2am? He’s on it. Daily massages and foot rubs? He’s the male for the job.

Gwyn insists on still training, which often leads to Azriel going unnecessarily easy on her, which then leads to her screaming at him.

True to his secretive nature, Az doesn’t tell anyone until she is well into her second trimester and even then, Rhys and Cassian find out by accident. They have a moment, Cassian obviously, is a blubbering mess.

Azriel reads every single book about pregnancy and fatherhood/parenting in an attempt to assuage his anxiety about becoming a father. He is an incredible father because of how seriously he takes the role.

Gwyn sings temple hymns to her tummy every night and whenever Azriel joins in, excited kicks ensue.

Because of his childhood, Azriel is obsessed with the nursery never being too small, dark or lonely. So he paints the nursery in a soft blue colour, builds a massive bookshelf for the whole wall and fills the room with toys, books and musical instruments.

Gwyn gives birth at Rosehall so Azriel’s mother can see her grandchildren being born. There is no shortage of decadent Illyrian food baked everyday for her.

The Children

They obviously name their girl after Gwyn's sister Catrin and the boys are named after their favourite authors because they are forever nerds at heart.

Their kids are genius level smart and can sing, play the piano, read at an adult literacy rate and fight like devils by the time they’re eight years old.

They have three children: twins (boy and girl) first and a baby boy later on.

The Twins: A girl (Catrin) with dark hair and hazel eyes who is cheeky and a total trouble maker and a boy with copper hair and turquoise eyes who is shy, gentle and quiet.

Catrin is a natural at espionage and is known for being able to pick even the toughest locks/break the strongest wards and sneak into forbidden places.

Catrin, Nyx and Nessian’s eldest daughter are best friends and end up giving the bat boys a run for their money with how much trouble they get in. (Whatever you do, don’t bring up the time the trio managed to steal one of Helion’s pegasi and fly to the Middle on a dare and especially don’t mention the time they caught Bryaxis and almost got eaten in the process).

The twin boy, who is very much the quiet/intelligent strategist type, has an academic rivals to lovers relationship with Feysands daughter.

Their joint competitive streaks, differing philosophical outlooks and general poor tempers make for perfect tension. Total Anthony and Kate from bridgerton vibes.

The baby boy is born a few years later and is the spitting image of Azriel - and he has wings! Being the youngest of the lot, he often feels left out and lonely.

He ends up running away to the training camps to have an Illyrian education because he idolises Nyx and wants to prove himself to his father despite Azriel never wanting them near Illyria.

He totally has a friends to lovers romance with a male Illyrian warrior he meets at the training camps and you can’t tell me otherwise. ((Their siphons match))

Azriel’s mother ADORES them and having grandchildren gives her the courage to leave Rosehall occasionally to travel to Velaris for Winter Solstice. Admittedly, she has a soft spot for the youngest, but she’d never say so.

Three Ships: I switch constantly between my favourite ships... so here are some I'm currently obsessed with:

Vin/Elend (Mistborn): I'm almost finished with the first book and I love them so much. They just make me feel so giddy.

Nesta/Cassian (A Court of Thorns and Roses): Mostly pre-ACOFAS, though. ACOWAR Nessian has my heart. Also Gwynriel.

Kaz/Inej (Six of Crows): I have to agree with Liv on this. They are perfect for each other.

For Winx Club my favourite ships are Brandon x Stella and Bloom x Sky.

Elucien and gwynriel think the same way elriel thinks when it comes to ships😅 you see their coments and all they said is sjm’s Pinterest is full of elucien and gwynriel and that they have all the canon evidence and similarities with others ship. Elriels think the same way we think we are right and that all the evidence points to us. I mean I have seem multiple elucien saying they can’t wait to see our ship sink. The fandom is so clearly divided and each side thinks they are 100% right. They said we make everything about elain and we said they make everything about gwyn or lucien🤷🏼‍♀️ is literally the same way of thinking just with different characters. Honestly it makes me a little scared to who is really right when it comes to ship because every side is so sure they are right. I honestly just want elain’s book.

I am sorry, but Gwynriel is just whack. From purely evidentiary POV, if you are not an obsessed fan who spent 3 years looking at the 2nd part of the bonus chapter and thinking you got something, Gwynriel doesn't exist. Like ask ANY casual reader, who isn't influenced by anything (btw, when ACOSF just came out, I was a fan of ACOTAR but I wasn't a crazed Elriel. I was still mostly into Feysand and Nessian, and I wasn't dealing with Elriel, because that was coming later. So I was technically that casual reader) if they think Gwynriel is an actual thing, 99% of them will say no. And look at you like you just fell out of a tree. Literally, yesterday, someone asked their mom about their opinion, since they are reading ACOSF, and the mom was like 'what? Azriel and that teenager?" It's not US. It's reality. There is no Gwynriel. Sorry.

Elucien have a bond. But haven't the last 4 books shown that the bond and the lack of attraction between Elain and Lucien are kind of sus? Again, SJM throwing in a ton of 'what if the Cauldron was wrong? why not make them mates?" isnt there for shits and giggles. Could, extremely hypothetically, Elucien happen? I'd say, yes, it has more chances than Gwynriel, but it's not saying much. Also, Lucien was literally given a girlfriend! Why they keep bitching about Vassa, I have no idea. It's a fantasy. They can all be immortal, it's okay.

But seriously, I cannot CANNOT compare Gwynriel, which is just a combo of headcanons, what ifs, random wants and delirious TikTokers, with what is actually in the books for Elriel.

Seriously, what are we even comparing here? Huge scenes like the Hybern rescue, the TT exchange, the murder of the King, and I want to eat Elain out, to what, exactly?

About the Azriel you were talking about him, I have to say that part in the extra that he says: that he showed Rhysand that side of him said a lot. It is normally closed and has multiple peaks. Girls find men that sexy, but in SJM's books it was always a warning.

I wanted to know why people find the way he refers to Elain as an object of possession beautiful, I wanted to see if it was Lucien giving the necklace to someone else...

Another detail, from acomaf we know that Azriel needs to exercise when he is frustrated. By the time he gets to that ring, he's broken, and he's fine and slept as well as he could.

I love the language of Gwynriel: provocative, competitive, and understanding at a glance.

I loved when Gwyn said he saw Azriel's aggressive side that slaughtered everyone, WITHOUT HESITATION. She was there at her worst moment, but proud that her attackers suffered. I'm looking forward to the broken parts of the two coming together.

What do you say about Gwyn saying she did bad things too. Do you think there's something beyond the fights she had with Catrin?

The reason Feysand worked is because Rhys showed Feyre the worst of him from the start. The reason Nessian worked is because Nesta never put on airs around Cassian, she let him see the most bitter and angry parts of who she was from their first interaction. Rowealin were endgame because they were complete assholes to one another in the beginning. If you can weather the worst of someone than you can definitely handle the best of them. We don't get that with E/riel though and that's not a good thing for an SJM book because as we see above, that's not how she writes her endgame couples. Azriel refuses to let Elain see the darkest parts of him and that right there spells their demise. I know Gwyn hasn't seen everything bad about Az just yet (i.e., his obsessive tendencies with females, his defying orders) but, she has seen the ever present rage that is a part of him. She did not seem bothered at all by his savagery. Anti's like to use the excuse that "of course she was fine with it since he killed the people that were harming her!" but honestly, that doesn't seem to make a difference to Elain. The people of the Hewn City are examples of horrible beings yet the cruelty that exists there still bothers her. Why would she care about what they do to one another since canonically, they're bad? Why would it matter to her since they deserve it? Elain seemed shocked by Nesta's beheading of the King but didn't he deserve it? Did Elain herself seem to enjoy taking credit for her part in his demise? After everything he had done to her and her sisters? It does not matter to Elain who is bad or good, who deserves cruelty or not, it still bothers her. So no, when Anti's try to argue against Gwyn's response to Az slaughtering everyone, their argument doesn't hold up. I think when Gwyn had the conversation that she didn't want to make any more mistakes she was referring to what happened at the temple which she carries a lot of guilt for. And when she was referring to the faults she had with Catrin, it was probably referencing the normal sister squabbles that sisters tend to have (just as we've witnessed with the Archerons). Do I think it's possible she could do something bad in the future? Only in the way that Feyre does bad things (like the destruction of Spring for the good of her Court and revenge on Tamlin and stealing from Tarquin). In the way Cassian razed an entirely village for revenge. In fantasy books, no one really looks at those things as "bad" because if there's a "evil guy or girl", readers tend to feel they deserve whatever is coming for them. But if we want to get technical, I guess revenge at whatever cost can be considered somewhat of an issue. Feyre and Rhys were willing to make an enemy out of a good person so long as it served their purpose in the end (it bothered them to do so but they were still did it anyway). She's meant to be Azriel's equal and that means the good and the bad have to somewhat align. Which to me means she could develop a bit of a bloodthirsty, vengeful side just like he has, just like Nesta has, just like Rhys has and so on.

tbh even E/riels are disappointed with acosf but they don't say it to others although they talk about it among themselves lol I used to be one so I should know. acosf was Nesta's books everyone expected to see Elain more bc she was close to her and they also heard about the training so they were 100% sure they were going to see E/riel training scenes (the very one they accuse Gwynriel for being boring and they don't want Nessian 2.0 lmao) so when they didn't get that they started commenting on Gwynriel post of how they wanted Elain instead of Gwyn in those scenes (specially the shadows dancing around Gwyn and the private dagger lesson) and that's when the toxicity started and I knew this place was not for me anymore. even tho I used to be a bypass in the fandom and not actually fixated on the books I saw enough threats and bullying, it was bad. I came back on acotar fandom this summer after a very long time and even now the reek of jealousy from that side of the fandom is recognizable. the pure ignorance and delusion is quite amusing, they know E/riel won't happen but they have to make it look like they don't so their years of being obsessed with a fictional ship and bulling other fans, the author and publisher won't got to waist yk. bc when I read acosf for the first time I knew Gwynriel is endgame and even before that I wasn't a huge E/riel fan but I wanted to tolerate them for the possibility of them happening and not Elucien (after the end of acofas we weren't sure who would be endgame and I was quite sad bc I was more incline toward Elain and Lucien)

anyway if they were so confidence in their ship they wouldn't do none of that and let others enjoy their time being in the fandom.

Azris shippers understand that the likelihood of their ship is slim, but they can manifest and hope for the best. Through Love, all is possible!

Yes, it's quite possible! I can passionately support Gwynriel and Azris in tandem. E/riels can readily accept that Elucien is the endgame couple while finding delight in the hints and potentials of E/riel until the next book's release when perspectives may change. Although there may still be Neris shippers out there, I haven't observed any significant disrespect directed toward Nessian. It's possible that I might not be searching thoroughly, but it's heartening that it's not as prevalent as the mainstream rivalry between Elucien and Gwynriel vs. E/riel.

I perceived ACOSAF as a retcon of Elucien, as Elain's abrupt shift from suggesting Lucien move to Velaris to ignoring him lacked a clear explanation of their deteriorating relationship. More on this later.

I get why E/riel shippers held onto hope after ACOSAF, even though I viewed their connection as more platonic. Azriel's deep love for Mor was abundantly clear in the series, and the Hybern scene hinted at the endgame couples, particularly Moriel, which was reinforced by SJM's deleted Pinterest.

In my view, Gwyn embodies a blend of Mor and Elain, sharing Mor's trauma, the ability to fit in with "one of the boys," a girl-next-door quality, and an interest in combat, while also displaying Elain's quiet and reserved nature.

On a more serious note, it's entirely possible to appreciate a ship without resorting to belittling anyone, whether it's a character without proper canon context or an actual person. Doubling down and resorting to insults becomes even more embarrassing. Perhaps this is due to a reluctance to acknowledge the scarcity of E/riel content to draw from.

Ironically, my anti-E/riel posts stem from my restraint in responding to most of their takes but they aren't inclined to listen, and I lack a suitable outlet to release my frustrations.

Additionally, I take issue with the way many books romanticize red flags as desirable relationship traits. It's crucial to recognize that Azriel's hesitancy to be his true self around Elain is an unhealthy dynamic, and it's not Elain's responsibility to change that. When someone acknowledges their actions as a mistake, it's wise to believe them and move on. This situation is reminiscent of the problematic "Twin Flame" concept, which often excuses negative behavior under the guise of a deeper connection.

But, thats why I don't like E/riel in a nutshell.

Gwyn and Lucien are fictional characters written to have a lot of trauma in their backstories. While they are not real, I can easily consider what you say about them as a reflection of what you truly believe to real people who have gone through something similar.
